How Planned Parenthood's Shocking Video Changed My View of Abortion

How Planned Parenthood's Shocking Video Changed My View of Abortion

Planned Parenthood's latest revelations were one too many for this writer.
Planned Parenthood's latest revelations were one too many for this writer. (Flickr/Creative Commons)
I've never been a die-hard anti-abortionist.
I've known in my gut that it was wrong, but calling abortion murder sounded a little harsh to my ears, however "right" that statement might be.
I never thought that a woman went into abortion willy-nilly. Rather, I considered the decision to be free of something growing in you to be one of heart-wrenching pain. If they went through with an abortion, it was on them—not on me to scream at them outside a clinic or share photos of mutilated children.
In my mind, a clump of cells wasn't a child until there was blood pumping through his or her veins. I was operating under the Old Testament philosophy that life is in the blood. Without that blood, there was no life.
No one debates that a child is a child once he or she exits the woman's body in the throes of labor. Rather, the debate over fetus vs. baby happens in utero. However, after the recent leaked Planned Parenthood video where Dr. Deborah Nucatola discusses not "crushing" certain parts of the body so the organs can be sold (or donated to scientific research, depending on what the news is reporting), I find myself reeling.
Abortion is an issue that the church glosses over because it seems like yesterday's news. I can almost see Christians rolling their eyes at me: "Yeah, Jessilyn, we know abortion is a bad thing. Yeah, yeah, it's murder. Yeah, yeah, babies are dying."
I say those statements because the preceding sentences rattled around my brain for years. My perspective changed when I watched a Planned Parenthood leader talk about tearing apart a body.
How can we as Christians cry persecution over a great many things, but not also lift our voices in defense of people who are being forcepped to death?
How does that not make your gut churn?
Are we afraid of offending our social media friends who may not believe the specifics we do? Are we ignoring this plight because it simply isn't as juicy or scandalous to address as Christians being sued by gay couples?
Even now, certain sites are out to discredit the video, claiming the conservative media is blowing the statements out of proportion, that Planned Parenthood is operating within its full, legal rights.
According to CNN, "Planned Parenthood has countered that it donates the tissue for scientific research and receives only reimbursement for its expenses, which is legal. The group also says it helps people donate tissue 'with full, appropriate consent from patients and under the highest ethical and legal standards,' according to a statement from spokesman Eric Ferrero."
Many of our columnists have written that this generation of Americans—and I don't mean Millennials, I mean everyone walking on this planet right now—is facing a Dietrich Bonhoeffer moment:
"Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act."
We use that quote against gay marriage and sexual immorality, but I would argue that the true evil is allowing people to die without giving them their right to know Christ.

The Revealer of Mysteries by Elaine Tavolacci

The Revealer of Mysteries

by Elaine Tavolacci

Identity Network
In the book of Daniel, the Lord allowed King Nebuchadnezzar to besiege Jerusalem. He ordered the court officials to bring in young Israelite men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king's palace. These men were renamed to Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

Daniel purposed in his heart and requested not to be defiled with the portion of the king's delicacies or wine.  After ten days Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were healthier and more nourished than the young men who ate the royal food. The Lord also gave them knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. They did not conform to the Babylonian system but walked in integrity with God.

Nebuchadnezzar found them ten times better than the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.

Nebuchadnezzar had a dream, which troubled him. He summoned his magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to interpret his dream but they were not able to, so he killed them by cutting them into pieces. Daniel discussed this with his friends (as he knew them and called them before their name was changed) Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah and urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed along with them.

During the night, the Lord revealed this mystery to Daniel in a vision. When he gave King Nebuchadnezzar the interpretation, Nebuchadnezzar fell down at Daniels feet and said, "Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries."

Mysteries are Being Revealed

We are living in a time that the Holy Spirit is revealing mysteries to the body of Christ. He is giving us visions and dreams, revealing the interpretation of dreams to us, releasing His secrets to those who He could trust, and exposing the hearts and minds of men. Those who have submitted to the process of transformation and refused to be defiled with the things of the kingdom of darkness will know His voice and discern His ways.

He will open doors of influence to those who are not trying to promote themselves or their ministries, but are serving Him without compromise. To those who have surrendered their lives and have crucified their old nature and ways of thinking, He will reveal His secrets. These mysteries are being imparted to you as you study His Word and seek out the mysteries of the kingdom. You are being cultivated by spending quality time in the secret place of His presence.

There is an open door and Jesus wants to reveal His ways to you. He will give wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to the discerning. As you store up His treasures in your heart, you will soon come into a higher level of understanding the mysteries of the kingdom and you will acknowledge Him as the revealer of mysteries.

Daniel 2:22 He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with Him.

Daniel 2:46-49 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering and incense be presented to him. The king said to Daniel, "Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery." Then the king placed Daniel in a high position and lavished many gifts on him.

He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men. Moreover, at Daniel's request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.

Isaiah 45:3 I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that I, the Lord, Who call you by your name.

Matthew 13:11 He answered and said to them, "Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

Franklin Graham: Our Nation Will Have to Answer for This

A bombshell undercover video showing Planned Parenthood Federation of America Senior Director of Medical Services Dr. Deborah Nucatola talking about how the pro-abortion group sells the body parts of aborted fetuses over lunch has enraged even pro-choice advocates.
But Franklin Graham has had some of the strongest words yet. The evangelist first states what at least most Christians believe: abortion is a sin and is clearly murder in God's eyes. Then he makes it personal.
"The people who perform it have no conscience, so I'm not at all surprised that they would be selling organs, tissue and body parts from babies," Graham said. "Planned Parenthood should be put out of business—they've done enough damage."
Congress is now investigating the practices but the blood is still on our hands. And as Graham pointed out, sin has an enormous price.
"Our nation will one day have to answer to God for the millions of innocent lives taken by abortion, and that applies to every politician who voted for and defended abortion. Thankfully though, no sin is too great for God's forgiveness—even murder."

How Should Christians Respond to So Much Sex on TV?

How Should Christians Respond to So Much Sex on TV?

'The Bachelorette's' Kaitlyn Bristowe
'The Bachelorette's' Kaitlyn Bristowe (YouTube)
"Having had the opportunity to sleep with each of the contestants at least once, it was time for Kaitlyn to whittle the pool down to two." So The Daily Beast describes a recent episode of The Bachelorette, in which Kaitlyn Bristowe has overnight dates with each of the three men left in the competition and then chooses two finalists.

I'm old enough to remember the days when such a plot would be an R-rated movie at best. Now it's standard prime-time television fare. Pornography is common on cable television, and is increasingly portrayed on network TV. Premarital sex on television is as common as kissing used to be. Last year we saw gay sex on network TV as well. The sexual revolution's three-part strategy continues: normalize all sexual behavior, then legalize it, then ostracize anyone who doesn't endorse it.

Last weekend, my wife and I watched The Saint, a 1997 espionage movie starring Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue. As their characters were sleeping together on their first date, the thought occurred to me: why am I not bothered by this? Extramarital sex is now so commonly accepted that even those of us who affirm biblical morality no longer object. Think about the last time you saw a movie or television show in which an unmarried couple slept together. How offended were you?

In the 1950s, married couples such as Lucy and Ricky in I Love Lucy slept in twin beds, even though they were married in real life. In the 1960s, married characters such as Darrin and Samantha Stevens (Bewitched) shared a bed, but were never portrayed in a sexual manner.

Things began changing in the 1970s, when series such as Charlie's AngelsThe Love Boat, and Three's Company brought sexual innuendo to TV. The 1980s saw prime time soap operas such as DallasDynastyFalcon Crest and Knots Landing, with ever-more pervasive sexual content. In the 1990s, cable television networks began displaying pornographic content. Network TV adapted by showing explicit sex scenes. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 75 percent of prime-time television shows now contain sexual content. And movies and novels such as 50 Shades of Grey continue to push the limits even further.

Why does the sexualizing of media matter? Studies show that the more children and teenagers watch sexual content on TV, the more likely they are to engage in risky behavior. And the normalizing of extramarital sex continues to destroy marriages and families, encourage sexual abuse, and dissolve the moral fabric of our culture.

How should Christians respond? Protesting unbiblical morality can warn parents and might affect programming decisions. But we need to do more. Our society desperately needs an alternative, a culture that manifests God's Kingdom on earth. A culture populated by those who choose love over lust (Matthew 5:27-30), marriage over divorce (vs. 31-32), truth over lies (Ephesians 4:25), humility over ego (Philippians 2:3-11), service over self (Ephesians 5:21).

"The Ministry of Reconciliation" - Cindy Jacobs

"The Ministry of Reconciliation"
Cindy Jacobs, Red Oak, TX
The Elijah List

"For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, no longer counting people's sins against them. And He gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation." 2 Corinthians 5:19 (NLT)

The Body of Christ is awakening to the need for reconciliation. People are beginning to realize that we cannot go on as we have—offended and divided—and still be effective at reaching the lost.

The ministry of reconciliation is carried out on multiple levels. First and foremost will always be the need that each person has to be reconciled to God. God does not want to us to be divided from Him, but rather to experience the fullness of relationship with Him.

Beyond this place of private reconciliation though, we must humbly face the reality that many have not been able to see and experience Christ, in part, because the Body of Christ has not faithfully expressed reconciliation in both word and deed.

Go Be Reconciled to Your Brother

After being reconciled to God, we are called to pursue reconciliation with each other. Matthew 5:23-24 puts it like this:
Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

Notice that it doesn't say if you have something against your brother, but rather if he has something against you. We need to seek out those who are offended with us and work to reconcile, forgive and be forgiven.

I'll never forget one time when the Lord impressed upon me that there was something I believed He could not do. At first, I was rather indignant! How could He accuse me of such a thing? Then He softly reminded me of an old broken relationship that I had never worked to mend, and because so much time had passed, I felt it was impossible to fix. He was right! (Of course. He always is!) I did think something was impossible for God. I began to pray, and God mended this long-standing breach.

On a much broader level, I believe God wants to bring reconciliation between the different races represented in the Body of Christ, and the need for this is urgent.

As one looks around, it isn't hard to discern that there are large walls of separation between the nations or different races of people in the Church. Often, congregations are completely segregated. When a conference is held, there will be little mixture of races. Even large prayer gatherings are usually predominantly one race with very little representation of other races.

How do we get these walls to come down?

First of all, we have to be willing to acknowledge that they even exist. Second, we need to consider why they exist, even if it means facing some hard truths about our histories and systems. Third, we need to make a concerted effort to rectify the situation. We need to make changes both in word and deed. If we simply talk about what it means to reconcile but do not put it into practice through repentance, it will come to nothing. Most churches would say they agree that reconciliation needs to take place, but many of them don't know how to practically go about reconciling.

The process of racial reconciliation for the Body of Christ needs to occur in at least three primary areas:

1. The Local Church
The local church needs to teach and equip people to reach out to those in their communities who are different from themselves. There may have even been sins committed against a certain people group, either within the church itself or in the community at large.(Photo via pixabay)

One Presbyterian church member told me how her church ran from the inner city so African-American people wouldn't want to become members. They removed themselves to the white suburbs. She shared with me how they felt they needed to go repent to the church in the inner city for their prejudicial attitudes and pride.
There may be members of your church who are Asian, Hispanic or some other race different than what is predominantly represented in the church.

Ask yourself, "Are we cultivating friendships with these brothers and sisters in the Lord? Have we ever considered someone other than the predominant race to speak or give some kind of input at our church? Are we listening to the needs and experiences of these groups, even if their stories are different from ours?"

ElijahList Prophetic Resources

2. Church to Church

As a pastor, have you met and fellowshipped with pastors of other races? Have any of them ever been invited to stand in your pulpit? Do you know the needs of their churches, and have you ever prayed together?
Commitment comes out of relationship. Many times it takes one on one meetings together with leadership before Churches can meet together in the Spirit.

Are there any feelings of separation because of living in different sections of the city where racial barriers exist? The church should be the first to tear these walls down. You might need to ask another church if you can visit them on a Sunday to repent of wrong attitudes, evil speaking, sectarianism or prejudice. I have known of some pastors who have knelt before a formerly "rival" church and repented to the whole congregation.

3. Church to Community

In United States history, we have something called the Civil Rights Movement in which Black Americans fought for their rights. Unfortunately, because of racism, the Church as a whole did not stand up and join together with them in their fight. Some even fought against them. (Photo via Wikipedia)

This is a sin of the Church and has caused quite a bit of grief. It is important to repent of this to black leaders in the community and then make a concerted effort to rectify the situation.

Problems of racism which occur over generations in a community cause schisms and pain. In some communities, racial minorities have been refused housing, jobs and other kinds of equal opportunities. Some Hispanic, Asian, or African-American churches have not been able to rent facilities. Stereotyping people of certain races has resulted in segregation from nicer parts of town, which then forced them to go to areas they would not have preferred. It is one thing if this is their choice, but quite another if they are not given a choice.

A study of the history of your community will tell you where these sins have existed and what repentance needs to take place. If these hindrances to reconciliation are not dealt with, I believe we are in for some serious problems in our cities. There is a harnessed rage one feels in many places, not only in the U.S., but in other countries as well.
Racial rioting, such as the ones we've recently experienced in Ferguson and Baltimore, could begin to take place on a much bigger scale and with more frequency if the Church doesn't wake up and actively do something towards healing the division between races. The Church has the only solution – the ministry of reconciliation through the Blood of the Lamb and the name of Jesus.

In many cities satan has a plan to stir up strife and drop the match which will ignite the hatred of the hearts of the oppressed. We must lift up Jesus through repentance, forgiveness and the rectifying of the ancient problems to pour the water of the Holy Spirit upon the nations of the earth. As we come into unity in this manner, the blessing of the Lord will be poured out upon the peoples, and God will heal our land.

Prayer Points:
1. Pray for a spirit of repentance to fall on the Body of Christ over division and offenses that have been allowed to linger.
2. Pray for the Church to humble herself and fully allow the Holy Spirit to search our hearts for areas of division and broken relationships.
3. Pray for a release of supernatural unity and reconciliation.

Naghmeh Abedini: Hope Is Not in Government Officials

Naghmeh Abedini: Hope Is Not in Government Officials

Naghmeh Abedini, wife of imprisoned Pastor Saeed Abedini, asked for continued strength for her husband and for her and her family as they continue to fight for his release.

The release of Abedini and four other Americans were not included in a nuclear deal reached this week between world leaders and the Iran.

"The ups and downs have really allowed the Lord to refine me and teach me to keep my eyes on him and my hope on Him instead of governments and officials," she said.

"I want to believe the best for my family, for Saeed and for my children but I continue to be in contact with the State Department and the White House and continue to pressure them that he is released immediately," Naghmeh said.

"He is in the hands of hardliners that are chanting 'death to America.' These are the people that are holding him," she said.

CBN News spoke with Nagmeh Abedini, Saeed wife, who has testified to Congress on his behalf for his freedom. After the deal was reached, she expressed her deep disappointment in it andurged Congress once again to not forget her husband.

Click play to watch her interview. Naghmet Abedini on CBN News interview

Saeed Abedini revealed this week during a visit with his father that he believes he is now a target because he is an American citizen.

He and other Christians imprisoned in Iran fear what may happen next as many inmates are expressing anti-American sentiments since a nuclear deal was reached this week.

It's a threat Abedini knows all too well. On June 3, he was viscously attacked by fellow prisoners. He was punched in the face near his left eye and nose and both eyes were beaten black and blue. However, no bones were broken.

Despite the tensions, Abedini encouraged his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who were disppointed in the nuclear deal that left him and other Americans in prison, saying the God was still in control.

"I know that so many of you have felt that I have been left behind after a deal was reached with Iran and I am still not home," he wrote.

He is in control and He is the One who beautifully writes the history over all governments, presidents, and any P5+1 negotiating team," he said.

Read Pastor Saeed's entire letter below:

I know that so many of you have felt that I have been left behind after a deal was reached with Iran and I am still not home.

I want you to know that as I wrote the thank you letter to President Obama after he had visited my family in January of this year (which he read at the national prayer breakfast), that God is in control of all countries and leadership in the world when the body of Christ comes together in united prayer. He is in control and He is the One who beautifully writes the history over all governments, presidents, and any P5+1 negotiating team.

We are all looking for a safer, more friendly world and because of this desire many of us are happy and others un-happy about the deal. Please join me in using these emotions that have been awakened to give fervor to united prayer for God's chosen people, America, and for the whole world.

Pastor Saeed,
In chains for Christ and chained together in unity
