Proving Biblical Truths Archaeologists in Israel are hard at work every day, looking for the next clue into a generation of Jews and Christians that church goers read about every week, but so often we can't find physical ways to connect with them. The cities are there, the buildings they likely worshipped in and lived in, and murals dedicated to the memory of a generation of Israelites that fill the stories of the Bible. But how do we prove to the world that the God of Abraham and Isaac is real, and that his people were caretakers of the most hotly debated and holiest place on earth - Israel. There are many archaeological digs across Israel with the sole purpose of putting physical evidence to the lives of people who lived in Israel 2,000 years ago and beyond. They are finding evidence everyday of these very subjects, and want to give you the opportunity to join them. If you have never been to Israel, enjoy the articles below about the digs happening year-round that you and your church can be a part of on your first visit. The site has fascinated archeologists for the past 150 years. The first excavation was undertaken by the Englishman, Charles Warren, in 1867 under the authority of the Palestine Exploration Fund. Warren began to excavate the hill south of the Temple Mount, entering through the Gihon Spring at the base of the hill. He explored a man-made tunnel or shaft which appears to have provided access to the water from the spring for the residents of ancient Jerusalem. Today the shaft bears Warren’s name. Further work in the tunnel in more recent excavations has uncovered a large stone fortification surrounding the Gihon spring. Sufficient evidence has been found to place the date of the fortification and Warren’s shaft in the Jebusite era of Jerusalem no later than the 18th century BC. This means that Warren’s shaft was most likely the means by which David entered Jerusalem to capture the city from the Jebusites (2 Samuel 5:6). The more recent excavations of the City of David undertaken by Eli Shukron and Ronny Reich have also uncovered a series of stone steps believed to have been part of the Pool of Siloam at the time of the Second Temple. If so, these would have been the very steps and pool to which Jesus sent the blind man to be healed (John 9:1–7). The steps were uncovered in 2004 during a drainage excavation project. The steps are only part of the complete structure, which lies under property belonging to the Greek Orthodox Church and therefore has not been fully excavated. A fascinating and truly enjoyable and unforgettable experience for Christian travelers to Jerusalem is to hike down Warren’s shaft through the Siloam tunnel to the Pool of Siloam. The Siloam tunnel is also known as Hezekiah’s tunnel for it believed to have been commissioned by King Hezekiah in the eighth century BC, diverting the water from the Gihon spring on the east side of the City of David to the west side to protect it from the impending siege of Jerusalem by the Assyrians (2 Kings 20:20; 2 Chronicles 32:1–4). Visitors actually walk through the running water of the Gihon spring, which has been flowing for millennia, and end up at the steps of the ancient Pool of Siloam. Two other major excavations in the City of David are also interesting. In 2005, Eilat Mazar began an excavation of an area under the present visitor’s center. There she discovered a foundation of a large structure, which she identified as a 10th century BC palace. The controversial claims are still disputed, but the structure could very well be the remains of David’s fortress. In addition to that ongoing dig, there is also an ongoing excavation of a street and subterranean drainage system leading from the Pool of Siloam to the Temple Mount from the Second Temple period. This dig has revealed some important finds, including one of the more interesting – a small golden bell, which may have been an adornment to the hem of the garment of a high priest (Exodus 28:33–34). The City of David continues to reveal the treasures and insights of ancient Jerusalem as well as to underscore the claims of the ancient text. As Unesco, the United Nations cultural organization, approved a resolution on Wednesday that ignored a Jewish connection to an ancient, hotly contested holy site in Jerusalem, the Israel Antiquities Authority produced a rare papyrus fragment from the seventh century B.C., written in ancient Hebrew, that mentions Jerusalem by name. Archaeologists interpreted the two lines of text on the papyrus as a concise shipping document reading, “From the king’s maidservant, from Na’arat, jars of wine, to Jerusalem.” The antiquities authority, an independent government body, said it was the earliest known source aside from the Bible to mention Jerusalem in Hebrew, and added in a statement that the other place mentioned, Na’arat, appeared in the biblical book of Joshua (16:7). ERBIL, Iraq -- It's been a big week for Christians in northern Iraq. Iraqi troops liberated several villages and towns on the way to Mosul, including Qaraqosh, the biggest Christian town on the Nineveh plains.

Now many are anxiously waiting to see what will happen next - it's a delicate balance between a horrific past and an uncertain future.

When ISIS swept through northern Iraq in the summer of 2014, tens of thousands of Christian's ran for their lives.

After fleeing Mosul and surrounding villages, thousands of believers made their way to Erbil. There, about 130 families live in a complex run by the Chaldean Catholic Church. It's challenging since three families share just one apartment.

CBN News met with Ithara Assis and her three daughters, who escaped the ISIS rampage.  

"We were scared and afraid and feel worried about this because we had heard that ISIS kidnapped many women and killed many women, too, so we were very afraid," she said. 

They now live in safe but crowded conditions where five family members sleep in one room. As Assis and her daughters prepared a meal for us, we asked what she would say to a mother in the United States.

"We tell them that we need a quiet life," she replied. "We need a safe life for us and for our children. And we ask you to liberate Mosul to go back to our home. What we need from all people in the world, to go back to our village and living a normal life as people are living."

Father Martin, who helps lead these displaced families, noted that while they've lost their homes, they've not lost their faith.

"The big challenge is 'What's our future? Are we going to stay here? Are we going to leave? Are we going to go back?'" he told CBN News.  

"Yeah, of course. Their faith is very -- maybe it was empowered by these difficulties," he continued. "They are -- every time they are praying, every time. They are also praying for ISIS (that) God have mercy on them, to make them a good people. They are praying for their -- for their enemies."

That act is just one part of their faith. Father Martin sees the Christians as the salt of Iraq.  

"So we can taste like a salt, give a taste for the food. So we can give a taste for this country," he explained. "They can see that we have hope; we have charity because we are living (for) the guy we call Jesus Christ."

When Martin's church offered him the opportunity to live in San Diego with his family, he instead chose to return to Iraq and his people.  

"I thought that we're called to don't escape from the problem, to face the problem and solve it if it will take a long time," he said. "That's my principle and that's what Jesus told us. He changed the whole world from Jerusalem. So we can here make a change from Iraq to the whole world."

Father Martin, Assis and thousands of others in northern Iraq want fellow Christians around the world to pray for freedom from ISIS and a return to the life they seek to regain.

CNN has been bashing Israel for decades. The headlines say it all. Is there a double standard here? Is CNN perhaps the most unfair and one-sided news broadcasting network?

Yeshua and the Tallit: Healing in His Wings

Everything about experiencing the mystery of the prayer shawl points to Yeshua, the Teacher. The tallit is all about Him.

It represents the Word of God, and He is the Living Word. It is most likely that Yeshua always wore a tallit because doing so was required by the Torah and He obeyed the Law of Moses. But there was something special about the Teacher's tallit. In the Word of God, we see instances of people reaching out to take hold of the hem of His garment, the tzitzit, so they would be healed. This was a profound, faith-filled act that, as we will see in this chapter, confirmed that Yeshua was indeed the promised Messiah.

The Scriptures tell us: "But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings" (Mal. 4:2).

The sun of righteousness has been interpreted to mean the Messiah, and the Hebrew term for "wings" is kanaph or kanaphecha. Consequently, the verse has been interpreted to read, "When the Messiah arises there will be healing through His kanaph or tzitzit, the corner of His tallit." This is why those who were ill wanted to grab the corner of Yeshua's garment, the tzitzit, which represents the Word of God. They believed that Yeshua was the Messiah and that there was healing in His "wings."

We read in the book of Matthew: "Then a woman, who was ill with a flow of blood for twelve years, came behind Him and touched the hem of His garment. For she said within herself, 'If I may just touch His garment, I shall be healed.' But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her, He said, 'Daughter, be of good comfort. Your faith has made you well.' And the woman was made well instantly" (Matt. 9:20-22).

I recall with fond memories that when I was 10 years old, my parents took me to see the movie Ben Hur at Radio City Music Hall. What stood out to me was that this Messiah had multitudes and multitudes of followers wherever He journeyed, and those He touched were healed. The movie was actually showing me the fulfillment of Yeshua's Word:

"And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent word to all the surrounding country and brought to Him all who were sick, and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well" (Matt. 14:35-36).

Of course, I had no idea what that passage said because as a young Jewish boy growing up in the United States in post-Holocaust times, I was never taught about Yeshua. I had no idea the garment He was wearing was a tallit katan, a garment that contained the tzitzit or the kanaph, and that there is healing through the power of His Word.

Still today healing comes through the power of the Word. While Adonai Himself is the One who heals—His name is Adonai Rofecha, "the Lord your Healer" (Ex. 15:26)—He does so through the Word of God.
