Beauty - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Beauty

Now Think On This
Steve Martin

“Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30, NASU)

They say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. That may be true, if the beholder has the character and discernment to know what is real beauty. You see, it goes far beyond skin deep. Real beauty resides in the deep affection of the soul to please the Creator. Then that which radiates from within is indeed a thing of beauty.

Growing up in the northeast land of Iowa, in the town of Cedar Falls, I had the privilege of going to a parochial school, named St. Patrick’s. The classes of about 18 kids each received our educational instruction from BVM nuns (Blessed Virgin Mary order) and “lay” teachers. Occasionally one of the priests would come during the week and conduct a class on the Roman Catholic Church theology.

Prior to daily classes, I would attend Mass around the 8:15 am hour. Desiring to please the Lord, as I knew at the time was a way to do thus, it was my intent to follow Him in His ways, and in the meantime cut a few years off of my time to be spent later in Purgatory (or so I was taught.) Being a young lad, attending the school from 2nd through 8th grades until I reached the age of 13, going to Mass during the week was not the norm for most kids, apart from Sunday. In fact, I can’t remember if any others in my grade did this. Besides that, there weren’t too many adults either that I recall making their presence known. I guess work and other occupations restricted the time it took, rather than time with God.

One thing I most remember about those morning hours, other than the bare heads of Father Mullen and Father Purcell, was this old, stooped-back lady who was always dressed in a long, black coat. Her head was also always covered with a black hood, but I knew she was not a nun. In fact, I knew very little about her, other than that she regularly was cleaning the church building. Quietly. Consistently. Without fanfare or to be an attention-getter. For the most part I thought she was kind of creepy, and weird. I never heard or saw her speak to anyone.

I can’t remember the exact day, but one Saturday morning I followed her as she walked down the street to her home, after the Mass had ended. I had an idea where she lived, but wasn’t sure. And yes, when she got to the house that I thought was hers, badly in need of paint and repair, she stopped and turned around. I was shocked!

For the first time I was able to see into her eyes. Though surrounded by wrinkles and gray hair that needed some combing, she had the most tender eyes. She smiled, didn’t really say anything, turned back around and went into the house.

I never knew what her name was, but the impression she left on me over those years, as often I watched her in her work, clearly had an impact in my life. A true servant of the Lord, and one whose beauty was truly one to behold.

The Lord has many that aren’t widely known among the populous nor being counted with the famous. They are carefully hidden, daily doing that which is their calling, performing the works which the Lord has given them to do. But when they reach their time of glory, the beauty within will shine along with the One who created them, as they behold the most beautiful One of all.

What a glorious and magnificent day that will be.

What This Biblical Prophetess Can Teach You About Your Crushing Trials - MICHELLE MCCLAIN-WALTERS Charisma Magazine

What This Biblical Prophetess Can Teach You About Your Crushing Trials

The SpiritLed Woman podcast is empowering women weekly to follow their purpose in Christ and boldly walk in faith. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com.

What do you do when life throws you a tragic curveball? How do you pick up the shattered pieces of your life when the one thing you've prepared for and dreamed about suddenly slips through your fingers as wind-driven sand? How do you recover when your vision is clouded by pain and your life plunges into despondency and despair? What do you do when a lifelong dream is suddenly taken away from you without warning and through no fault of your own?
As women, we all have faced some type of crisis, whether it's a failed marriage, children on drugs, breast cancer or other illness, loss of a job, wrong choices or as in Anna's case, the sudden death of a husband. Crisis can be defined as "a stage in a sequence of events at which the trend of all future events, especially for better or for worse, is determined; turning point; a dramatic emotional or circumstantial upheaval in a person's life" that leads to a "decisive change." The way to overcome every unforeseen crisis is found in the one who is the overcomer: Jesus. Jesus tells us in John 16:33b, "In the world you will have tribulation. But be of good cheer. I have overcome the world." This Scripture speaks to the providential care of the Lord. Providence comes from two Latin words: pro, which means "before," and video, which means "to see." You can have confidence in Jesus' ability to see what is ahead in your life and arrange provision and power to overcome. How do you access this overcoming power?
My one answer is hope. I'm not referring to wishful thinking. I believe hope is a person, and His name is Jesus. Jesus is hope. He provides hope. Hope is an expectation and confidence to see God's goodness in life's difficult situations. Hope is the anchor of your soul when life is hard to navigate.
When the storms and tribulations of life come crashing in upon you, you can be anchored in Christ and His promise to cause all things to work together for your good. Romans 8:28 says, "We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." The word know means "to see; to perceive, notice, discern, discover; understand." I believe Anna's perception and understanding, based on her personal experience with God, prepared her to walk through this hardship. She had already discovered God was working things together for her good.
God has promised to release His power and wisdom to overcome difficult and seemingly hopeless seasons in your life. Taking hold of this promise from God creates confidence and perseverance instead of anxiety and fear of the future. When you have a purpose and destiny in God, you can be assured that God will cause trauma, tragedies and disappointments to work together for your good. I am not saying that God causes these traumatic things to happen, but He will use them to get the best out of your life.
God is very intentional about your growth. The correct response to crisis produces perseverance, character and hope. You must know that surely there is a hope and your future will not be cut off! You will survive.

Gang Leader Trades Guns for Gospel - THE CHRISTIAN INSTITUTE

Gang Leader Trades Guns for Gospel

Join us on our podcast each weekday for an interesting story, well told, from Charisma News. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com.

A former gang leader whose life was completely turned around after becoming a Christian has opened up about his faith in an article for The Gospel Coalition.
David Washington is now the pastor of Kingdom Covenant Church in Chicago.
He spoke out about his violent past and says it was his coming to Christ that "saved his life."
Realization
Washington joined the "Gangster Disciples" around the age of 12. He became a drug dealer in his teens and went on to become gang leader.
It was not long before he was arrested and facing a possible 15-year prison sentence for armed robbery and unlawful use of a weapon.
His gang threw him a going-away party the day before he was due to plead guilty in court. It was here that he was struck by the realization of what he had done.
"I had this experience of looking at myself in the mirror and saying, 'You threw your whole life away for nothing,'" Washington said.
Convinced and Converted
Washington says that although he was an agnostic at the time, he decided to ask God for help. The next day, the judge dropped one of the charges and sentenced Washington to one year of house arrest.
"I was convinced God was real after that", he said. "And once convinced, there was no turning back. I gave God everything I had."
He says he "never went back to doing drugs" after this and began sharing the gospel with members of his former gang.
"I began to go to the same people I used to lead and tell them, 'I gave my life to Christ. This is real. I'm pleading with you to come out of this.'"
'Love of Jesus'
Washington became involved in youth ministry and prison ministry at Salem Baptist Church. He also studied at a local Bible college before getting a master of divinity in theology.
He has now started a church on the south side of Chicago that works alongside members of the community who are in prison.
Pastor Harvey Carey said Washington started his church on the streets "because that's where he was won".
"He's saying, 'I know what it's like, but let me show you the love of Jesus.'"

Purim Miracles Do Happen! ✡ "A Feast and a Holiday" - ISRAEL365

The Jews had gladness and joy, a feast and a holiday.

Shabbat Inspiration

Have you ever had a "bad" experience only to later discover that it was all for the best? Esther was the unwilling wife of an anti-Semitic king who lived a secret life as a Jew. Yet her predicament places her in the perfect position to rise up and save the Jewish people. On Purim, we raise ourselves up and bring joy to others with the beloved customs of feasting and sending gifts to the needy. Today in Israel, 1 out of 3 children is living in poverty. Help make the holiday a happy and joyous time for all of the Children of Israel!

An Opportunity to Fulfill the Biblical Commandments of Purim

Purim is known for its festivities of feasting, drinking and dressing up. This year, Meir Panim has organized unique activities to enhance the day for Israel's poor and lonely citizens.

An Everlasting Hebrew Name

A Hebrew name is a fundamental element of one's identity. Traditionally, baby boys are given their Hebrew name eight days after their birth at their circumcision ceremony (brit milah) and baby girls are given their Hebrew names during the Torah reading in the days following their birth. If one's parents did not give them a Hebrew name at birth, or if an individual is converting to Judaism from another religion, they have the freedom to choose their own Hebrew name. Those who have received a Hebrew name later in life have attested to the power they felt in their instant connection to their Biblical name. Find out your Hebrew name today!

Joel C. Rosenberg's Blog: A Shia Muslim country that backs the US, opposes Iranian aggression, and is friends with Israel? Sound like fiction. But welcome to Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan-Ambassdor-mtgNew post on Joel C. Rosenberg's Blog

A Shia Muslim country that backs the US, opposes Iranian aggression, and is friends with Israel? Sound like fiction. But welcome to Azerbaijan.

by joelcrosenberg
(Washington, D.C.) -- In this crazy, chaotic world of ours, could there really be a Shia Muslim nation that strongly backs the U.S., opposes Iranian terrorism and regional aggression, and is not only a friend and ally of Israel but recently welcomed Israel's Prime Minister for a state visit?
Sounds like fiction, I know. But it really exists -- Azerbaijan.
Yesterday, I had the honor of a two-hour meeting with Ambassador Elin Sulaymanov at Azerbaijan's Embassy in Washington. While our conversation was off the record, it was certainly fascinating. I gave the Ambassador an advance copy of WITHOUT WARNING, and he invited me to visit Baku.
Some facts about the country:
  • 9.8 million people
  • 97% Shia Muslim, 3% Christian, but with a fairly secular government
  • "Oil-rich Azerbaijan has redefined itself over the past two decades from a struggling newly independent state to a major regional energy player," notes the BBC.
  • A former Soviet republic which became independent on August 30, 1991, just before the formal dissolution of the USSR
  • Located in a tough neighborhood, with Russian President Vladimir Putin to the north, Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to the south, and Armenia to the west which wrested control of some 20% of Azerbaijan (the Nagorno-Karabakh region) after a period of war and separatist uprisings during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
  • Criticized by some internationally for an authoritarian government
  • Working closely with the U.S. and the West on regional energy and security issues
Some articles worth reading about the country:
