Mayor Campaigns for God After Miraculous Escape - CBN News

Mayor Campaigns for God After Miraculous Escape

TACLOBAN, Philippines -- It was a year ago on November 8th that one of the strongest storms in history devastated parts of the Philippines. As the hardest-hit city Tacloban slowly recovers, its mayor is speaking out for the first time about how his faith in god helps with the challenges of rebuilding a destroyed city.

As super Typhoon Haiyan slammed into eastern Philippines, Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez and a few staff members were stranded at a beach front location.

"A song that I was singing throughout the time was "You are my Word, You are my God and I lay down my life for you,'" Mayor Romualdez recounted to CBN News in an exclusive interview from his office in Tacloban.

Suddenly a storm surge hit the building.

Miraculous Escape

"I was asking God, 'Please give me a few minutes, even an hour to get down and to make sure my family was okay and then if it is time for me to go then that's it,'" Romualdez recalled.

Romualdez and the others punched a hole in the ceiling to escape rising water seconds before another tidal wave hit.

Meanwhile across town, at his beach house, Romualdez's wife and two children were also on the verge of being swept away by tsunami-like waves. The entire time Cristina Romualdez was reciting the whole of Psalm 91.

"I will dwell in the shelter of the most High God, I will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, you are my refuge and my fortress," she said.

The couple says it's a miracle they survived.

"When you are faced with death as I was several times during that day you completely forget everything," the mayor told CBN News. "I never went back to my house to check on my belongings till after five days. What was important to me were the lives of people. I got my family and I was out there saving lives."

Paying Forward With Hope

As soon as the storm passed, the mayor hit the streets clearing debris and coordinating search and rescue operations. Over 6,000 people died that day. Romualdez says he knew he had to give people hope to help them pull through.

"People were questioning their faith and they were asking me: 'Why did God take away my children? What did they do wrong? And then I said 'Do you want to see God?' 'Yes, then you have to die! You have to overcome death and Christianity is not focused on death, it is focused on after life."

A year later he's still encouraging residents of his city to draw close to God.

"The purpose in what I tell people is that when it comes to God I ask questions, but I don't question. I ask questions and I ask, 'Lord, why did this happen?' George: Have you had an answer yet? Romualdez: Yes. George: And what did He say? Romualdez: The answer clearly is that it is not a miracle that you survived, because at the end of the day you are going to die. What is a miracle here and the blessing here and the grace of God here is where are you going to go after that."

The mayor's wife, a former actress turned politician, organized several evangelistic outreaches in Tacloban, including a worship event which took place on the storm's one-year anniversary.

"Anything could happen at any minute, you could lose your life any second, any day so people need to realize and I think people have realized that there's no other way you can go but rely on God and walking with God every day," seh said.

It's a spiritual sentiment that runs deep in this city-- as I discovered while riding Tacloban's most popular means of public transport.

"It's good to have a mayor who trusts God and encourages us to trust Him as well," Nirva Vinez a resident of Tacloban, said."He almost lost his life, he knows the pain we are enduring a year after the storm. We need God's help to rebuild our destroyed city."

CBN Disaster Relief

The mayor has taken a lot of heat in the last year for his government's slow response to the rebuilding efforts. But in reality you talk to many Taclobans and they will blame the national government in Manila.

"It's not the mayor's fault," one resident of Tacloban said. "The national government is wrongly accusing him of inaction when the blame should be on them for not doing enough to help us rebuild."

Romualdez says thanks to international aid agencies, like CBN Disaster Relief, Tacloban is slowly getting back on its feet. In the last 12 months, CBN Disaster Relief teams have built temporary homes for over 15 hundred families, restored 9 schools and helped thousands of typhoon victims with livelihood projects.

"I was very glad when I saw the teams (CBN Disaster Relief) come in because I know they work fast and they were one of the first ones to build temporary or what we call transitional shelters and they were fast," he said.

Mayor Romualdez is a very busy man these days trying to rebuild and restore hope to his city. He clings to his faith and is trusting God to fulfill His divine purposes for Tacloban.

"Being more like Christ is living dangerously. We are not told that there is a disaster so we will hide. No. We are told that there are disasters to come, there are challenges to come but for us to face it and God will be with us. Having a strong faith is the key, you cannot do it alone."

"ACM Girls' Night Out: Superstar Women of Country" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 4th, 2011. The event/concert honored great female artists who have helped to shape the industry for those that followed.

Carrie Underwood & Vince Gill's duet (a jaw-dropping performance), brought the audience to their feet, for a standing ovation a full minute before the song ended. Another highlight was Gill's beautiful guitar solo, from 1:34 - 2:57, playing a full verse instrumental.

lyrics "How Great Thou Art":

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

Shabbat Inspiration

Throughout the Book of Genesis we are introduced to the beautiful custom of blessing others. In Judaism it is taught that every person has the power to bestow blessings, if conferred with genuine sincerity. Even the blessings of the deceitful Laban were potent, since he gave them to his family wholeheartedly.

Franklin Graham: The War on Christmas Is a War on Christ

Franklin Graham: The War on Christmas Is a War on Christ

manger scene
Scenes like this traditional manger are becoming unpopular in the wake of secularizing Christmas. (iStockPhoto.com)
Millions of Christians around the world soon will be celebrating the birth of Christ. In many places, like ancient Bethlehem where Jesus was born, commemorating the birth of the Savior is still the main focus. Unfortunately, the United States in the last few decades has witnessed increased hostility toward the sacred nature of Christmas, erupting into what has become a blatant war on Christmas.
Stores, schools and communities across America continue to find new and intolerant reasons to remove any religious references to Christmas, stripping it of any holy or historical significance. Christian songs, prayers and other spiritually vital connections to the Lord Jesus Christ are deleted or diminished.
Some flagrant examples:
In Ramsey County, Minnesota, the courthouse banned red poinsettias because someone deemed them a "Christian symbol."
The city of Pittsburgh refers to the Christmas holidays as "Sparkle Days," in an ironic attempt at avoiding offense.
A Veteran's Administration hospital in Augusta, Georgia, adopted a policy banning religious Christmas songs in public areas.
But none of this should surprise us.
That's because at its root and core, the war on Christmas isn't really about Christmas at all—it's about the Son of God. The war on Christmas is a war on Christ and His followers. It's the hatred of our culture for the exclusive claims that Christ made: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6).
When Christ stepped out of eternity and into a cold animal stall in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago, the angels announced His birth with these stunning words to shepherds huddled in the Judean darkness: "But the angel said to them, "Listen! Do not fear. For I bring you good news of great joy, which will be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:10-11).
Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, became as fully man as He was fully God. He took on human flesh for one reason—to die for our sins, to rescue us from eternal separation and unending punishment. He fulfilled that mission three decades later when He hung on a cross in Jerusalem, was buried, rose again and ascended into heaven.
Believers in Christ call Jesus' birth His first Advent, or His first Coming. It was a time for miracles and healings, but also a time for suffering at the hands of sinners. He was betrayed, scorned, beaten and crucified.
When Christ returns—His second Advent or Coming—it will be an entirely different experience. He will come with undiminished power and glory, as a conquering King who will cast Satan and unbelievers into an eternal lake of fire. His kingdom will be finally consummated with the new heavens and the new earth.
Scripture calls the time between those two Advents the last days. We don't have to wait for them. Everyone born from the resurrection of Christ until His triumphant return has lived in them.
The Apostle Peter, in his first sermon at Pentecost, referred to the Holy Spirit's outpouring with the words of the prophet Joel: "And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh" (Acts 2:17).
The writer of Hebrews began his letter with a magnificent description of Jesus Christ, saying that God "has in these last days spoken to us by His Son" (Hebrews 1:2).
And the Apostle Paul told his protégé Timothy that "in the last days perilous times will come" (2 Timothy 3:1). He goes on to list nearly 20 chillingly familiar character traits that describe those days, such as pride, brutality, treachery and heartlessness.
We should not be taken aback, then, when a day that should be devoted to meditating upon the marvelous, virgin birth of the Lord Jesus Christ is instead treated in a scandalously secular way that denies His deity and saving work.
The name of Christ is an offense to the unbelieving world. The mention of His birth, or life, or death and resurrection, is an insult.
The world, the flesh and the devil all hate the mere mention of His glorious name. They are mortal enemies of the Savior.
The world the Bible speaks of is the world system that is set against the rule and reign of Christ. It is enthralled with power and greed, and it wants no part of the Messiah's absolute authority.
The flesh refers to the rebellious, sinful soul of man that is corrupted with deceitful desires and refuses to acknowledge God. It is willful, prideful disobedience that reacts with instinctive disdain for the Savior.
The devil animates it all. Knowing that his time to roam on earth is short and that he will one day be cast into the lake of fire, he opposes Christ at every turn. He and his demons will help gather all the nations into a great last-ditch rebellion against the King of kings before he is defeated.
Until then, however, we should expect stiff, relentless opposition to the gospel message from our culture. The persecution that many believers already experience in many countries may still be far into the future for us, but don't expect that it will not intensify and heighten.
However, since we know that Christ has already made every provision for sinners like us, we can steadily and obediently be about the Father's work of letting our light shine before men. We can be about the business of living uprightly in an evil age, testifying of Christ's power to deliver us from sin, Satan and the world.
The war on Christmas—the war on Christ—is doomed to fail. Christ came the first time to rescue us from our sin; He is coming a second time to establish His kingdom forever under His righteous reign.
Every believer from every age who has repented and trusted in Him for the forgiveness of sin will be with Him. The Babe at Bethlehem will be the conquering King.
So this Christmas, don't worry if you see the opposition building. Praise Him that He came to earth 2,000 years ago on a rescue mission, that He has rescued you.

Messianic Guest House Loses Appeal to Lesbians

Messianic Guest House Loses Appeal to Lesbians

Thursday, December 04, 2014 |  David Lazarus  ISRAEL TODAY
A Jerusalem District Court has rejected the appeal of the Messianic village of Yad Hashmonah and has ordered it to pay compensation to the tune of USD $15,000 to two lesbians for refusing to allow a wedding reception on its premises.
Judge Moshe Hacohen upheld the previous ruling that since the Yad Hashmonah Messianic Guest House is a open to the public, the community cannot impose its religious faith on individuals or groups who want to use its facilities.
“There were no contradictions in this case,” said Hacohen. “Yad Hashmonah refused to allow the wedding reception because the women are lesbians. In their appeal, the village claims that they have authority to refuse the reception because of their faith. Most of the members of the village are Messianic Jews, who base their faith on elements of Judaism and Evangelical Christianity, a faith based on the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament as the word of God.”
In its appeal, Yad Hashmonah explained that “the lifestyle of these lesbians is in absolute contradiction to the Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament. The laws regulating freedom of religion must protect us from allowing a ceremony in our backyard which is in complete contradiction to our faith.”
However, the Jerusalem Court determined that the refusal by Yad Hashmonah to allow the lesbian celebration is against the law, which states that “it is forbidden to act in a way that discriminates against persons for services rendered or entrance to public places.” The judge pointed out that the village’s Messianic meeting room is completely separate from the guest house, which is a secular tourist business.
Yad Hashmonah’s lawyers, Michael Decker and Sarah Weinberg, argued that it was the village’s legitimate right to refuse the lesbian celebration given its members’ beliefs in the Bible and their faith, which prohibits same-sex marriages. The lawyers explained that the Messianic believers hold dearly the importance of traditional marriage between and a man and a woman.
The court agreed that the residents of Yad Hashmonah had every right to practice their faith. However, since they are running a regular secular business, they are required to adhere to the law which prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion or sexual preferences. If Yad Hashmonah wants to open its business to the general public, the judge ruled, then they must be willing to provide services even to persons or groups who are not to their liking or taste.
There are many guest houses and businesses in Israel that are owned and operated by Messianic or Christian organizations. The ruling comes as a warning to all faith-based establishments in Israel that they cannot refuse use of their facilities once they have opened them up to the public.

Darkness Into Light by Barbie Breathitt

Darkness Into Light

by Barbie Breathitt

Identity Network
Greatness is birthed in the darkest recesses of our soul. The extraction of this precious oil requires a season of pressure, pain and a desperate search for the light of God's truth. Only when the necessary changes have taken place within the soul, will the anointing that reflects God's glory bubble to the surface.

God conceals Himself in darkness so we are not able to discern the movement of His hands, though they are always at work on our behalf. God gets angry at our sin, not at us; because He knows our sin causes tears of regret to flow when we miss the highest goal, settling for less than He desires. God's anger only last for a solitary moment in the night. Once Holy Spirit's truth is discovered and embraced, God's favor brings great joy at the rising of the morning sun.

We are called to see, apprehend and continually experience God's loving kindnesses. We gain much wisdom through the depths of the process that God works into us in the valley of the shadow of death. His grace enables us to die to self, surrender to His perfect will and learn to walk in His higher ways. God desires to cut the chains that bind us, to release the burdens we carry and the things that weigh us down. When we yield to the pruning we will exit the dark night of the soul, enlightened to a new day, understanding that as we draw closer to knowing God and His redemptive ways, His light will now shine brighter in us than in our past.

God Knows the Divine Plan

Jesus, the Creator of all, hung naked surrounded in total darkness on the cross, dying for the sins of the world; past, present and future. Gross darkness covered the entire earth from the sixth hour until the ninth hour. Even when Jesus was beaten beyond recognition and shrouded in obscurity, God knew exactly where Jesus was. God turned His face away from Jesus so not to look upon the sin Jesus bore for us. When Jesus freely gave His life, was nailed captive to a cross, blinded by a thick veil of gloom and the bitter pain of separation, God knew the divine plan and narrow path where He was leading Jesus for all of eternity. The crucifixion of Jesus was the darkest moment in history followed by the utmost resurrection light the world has ever known when He arose from the dead.

God searches the recesses of our hearts and tests every one to show us what resides within. God knows us completely; yet He is too wonderful and amazing for us to understand. He intently watches our every move and counts our every breath. He knows our steps and understands our very thought processes. God has formed and recorded the words we speak before they are uttered. God has scrutinized our path. He is intimately acquainted with all our ways. He knows when we sit, stand or lay down to rest. God guards and encloses us. He is always before, under, above and behind us at all times with His hand resting gently upon our shoulder.

A Light to Forge Our Path

When we are not able to see the next step, God promises His Word will be a light to forge our path. His Word will transform us and make us better when we emerge from the time of testing and the trying of our soul. Every test we take helps us learn to love. The person who does not love does not know the essence of God, for God is perfect love. God sent Jesus to manifest His love to a sinful world so we can be His children and have eternal life through Him.

God rewards a life of faith that trusts in Him. The praises of His children builds a spiritual habitation for the Lord. His presence brings deliverance, healing and peace. Our praise causes the Holy Spirit to move into our dilemmas so that His light of hope breaks forth in us. When our attention is drawn to the Kings' powerful countenance and we lift up our faces to see the light of His presence, God shines His love upon us. Our King beckons us to gaze full upon His lovely face. He loves us with an everlasting love. As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride so does the Lord rejoice over us.

When we gaze into God's affectionate eyes we can sense the tender love Jesus has for us. When lover's eyes meet they feel the depths of their passion for one another. Nothing is wasted in an infinite God who collects every one of our tears as a glistening treasure and stores them in a heavenly jar. God's compassion is touched by the feelings of our infirmities. Knowing the Holy Spirit has a divine dream plan, that He has never left or forsaken us, causes us to forget the times of intense pain and the years of suffering in darkness.

God controls everything; nothing is beyond His loving touch or wisdom. God does His deepest work during our darkest days. God is infinite light and there is no darkness within Him at all. We are called to enter into God's presence to walk in God's penetrating light.  When we are in the depths of the valley, we hear the distant thunder and the sound of the trumpets' call that brings fear to our heart. So we stand afar off and watch to see the lightening flash and the smoke rising from the mountain encounter of God. Instead of preparing ourselves to boldly rush in; we look for someone else to approach this holy God.

Moses, God's friend, drew near to God by passing through a cloud of thick darkness to enter God's radiant presence. Moses had to journey alone while the Israelites stood and shook in fear at a far distance. They were afraid to be tested, knowing that if they did not repent; their sinful condition would result in their death. They chose to stay in their rebellious condition and listen to a man speak on the behalf of God instead of making the dark cleansing journey into the light of God's presence. The light of God dwells in thick darkness; to see the countenance of His face, one must press in behind the veil.  (Exodus 20)
The greatest power in the universe is love.

Tour Guide Gets More Than She Expected When She Joins Prayer at Supreme Court

siege in front of supreme court
It's significant that a prayer vigil with Bound4LIFE is called a "Silent Siege." (Bound4Life)
It's significant that a prayer vigil with Bound4LIFE is called a "Silent Siege."
This public prayer witness carries a distinct difference from the atmosphere of many protests that occur on Capitol Hill, specifically at the U.S. Supreme Court. The people praying are silent, yet definitely it is a Siege—things are most certainly happening!
I have led educational historic tours of the East Coast for decades. I've often been by the people who are lined up at the steps of the Supreme Court, praying with the red Life Tape over their mouths. I was familiar with Justice House of Prayer DC and Bound4LIFE, but I had never prayed with them before.
One day a friend and I were there without a group so I said, "Let's go over and pray with them."
As soon as I took the piece of red tape that said "LIFE" on it, I started shaking. Keep in mind, I'm not some sort of shake-and-quake person. What is wrong with me? I thought. Why am I shaking?
I've been to the Supreme Court thousands of times, never experiencing such emotion. As I put the red tape over my mouth, I looked up at the triangular pediment staring down at us from the top of the Court. It declares boldly: EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW.
I started crying so hard. My spirit cried out within me, God, equal justice? There's no justice for these babies! Their voices have been silenced.
Now, over the last 42 years, we've had 56 million lives snuffed out from abortion according to most estimates. These are American citizens, who would've been part of our culture: inventors, artists, sisters, fathers ... people who contributed in everyday life.
One Silent Siege at the Supreme Court was a turning point for my very existence. I made an inner realization: I wasn't alive when slavery was going on, I wasn't alive during the Holocaust—but this is happening on our watch.
A Scripture verse rose up in my spirit during that same hour. Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning, begins Genesis 9:5-6. Whoever sheds man's blood, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God He made man.
We're accountable in this generation for allowing this to take place. Those of us alive right now, we've got to be the voice for the innocent among us. And who is more innocent than a baby on the inside of a mother's womb?
That day was life-changing for me. We know the faithful prayers of Bound4LIFE have impacted the unseen realm.
And the countless thousands who've walked by and thought, What is that? From experience, I will tell you: They've been impacted too.
