Recurring Dreams

Why do we sometimes dream the same dream over and over? The main reason dreams reoccur is that we have not entered into the understanding of the message yet. So the same dream message continues to play over and over. Sometimes the characters change or the setting changes, but the overall message remains the same. Once we come into the understanding and we apply the wisdom and insight of the dream's meaning to our lives the dream will cease to replay.

Oftentimes, through recurring dreams, God is trying to communicate something. When we finally understand what he is saying to us, the dream script will stop repeating itself. Our dreams will change when our behaviors change. We can have several different types of dreams but they all deal with the same underlying theme. A biblical example is Pharaoh's dream of the seven cows and seven ears of grain. (Genesis 41:1–7)

Nightmares

Why do we have nightmares, and how can we eliminate disturbing dreams? Nightmares are about things in our lives that we fear. We are not to be fearful or run from the enemy or difficulties but face them in God's power and boldness. Once we face and confront our fears they will stop haunting us. The people, places, and events in our dreams hold tremendous significance for understanding ourselves. Nightmares are simply messages from the deepest part of us to our consciousness calling for change. If unheeded, not only may we continue to suffer from the unpleasantness of a "bad" dream, but we run the risk of perpetuating negativity in our waking life.

Sometimes a nightmare can be a wakeup call from God. Oftentimes when we ignore what God is trying to speak to us through dreams, whether consciously or subconsciously we can experience nightmares. These terrors of the night get the point across in a graphic way, in order to make a lasting impression on us, so that we will remember the dream and dig into its meaning.

Universal Symbols

There are universal symbols such as the circle, which represents covenant, wholeness, or completeness. But sometimes only the dreamer knows the meanings of the symbols. So in order to accurately interpret dreams, the interpreter should ask questions to find out what personal significance a particular dream symbol holds for that person. Symbols can have totally different meanings to each dreamer. Although they are not as important as people in our dreams, animals can be of large significance as well and sometimes portray our emotional state.

People are usually symbolic of our inner person. As light divides the colors of a prism so a dream will help divide the various parts of our personality. Dreams help us to rightly discern our true selves and to remove the mask that we wear to protect ourselves from our world. Dreams help us to learn to listen to God's voice through symbolic language. They enable us to cooperate with God's greater purpose and plan for our lives. Dreams help us to reach our untapped potential by bringing us into harmony with ourselves, God, and others. They enable us to get at the heart of the matter.

If we want God to speak to us through dreams and visions, he will. God is not a respecter of persons. Abraham, Jacob, Mary and Joseph, Peter, the Prophets, Gideon, Solomon, Daniel, Joseph, and heathen Kings were all lead by dreams and visions, so we are in good company. We must pursue God and learn the way he speaks through dream symbols and night parables. We should focus on and give attention to our personal dream language. Develop an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit and he will give insight, revelation and the interpretation for not only our dreams but for the dreams of others as well.

Interpreting the Essence of a Dream's Theme

Identifying the essence or tone of a dream means we are determining the theme, main concept, or message that the dream brings to light.

To capture the essence of the dream, the dreamer should first record the main symbols of the dream removing the extraneous details, objects, and names but retaining the action of the dream. This should be done before the dream is evaluated by point of view or perspective. The theme or main concept of the dream will provide the focus of what or who the dream is about.

Each person has a unique dream vocabulary that has been assigned specific meanings depending on the dreamer's life experiences. Personal symbols in dreams are joined with surrounding details that give them life and dimension. While to some a candle symbolizes romance, ambiance, and beauty, to others it may symbolize their only source of warmth, poverty, and shame. Dogs are known as "man's best friend." This interpretation may apply to dog lovers but not to the person who was viciously mauled by an angry dog as a child. Animals are used in dreams to symbolize our good and bad character traits.

Children and babies often represent a new phase or beginning, immaturity, or childishness, innocence, purity, naivety, spiritual fruit, or something that is very dependent upon us for its well-being.

The dreams that God formulates to speak to us in our sleep are oftentimes very precise. They efficiently address multiple areas, layers, issues, and topics as they reveal concealed knowledge and hidden mysteries come to light through one short dream. It is not unusual for one dream to address both a personal concern and a universal meaning that can be applied to other situations.

A dream can forewarn by predicting the future and enable the dreamer to prepare by removing health issues or character flaws or to solve a problem that is arising. We associate dream symbols with our personal experiences and the memories those experiences inspire. The symbols that appear in dreams evoke certain reactions or responses from the dreamer based on that person's individual makeup.

The dreamer will often ask more questions when the interpreter is only giving the essence of the dreams meaning. This technique will keep dialogue and communication flowing between the dreamer and the interpreter. There is an art to giving just enough to keep the person interested but not outlining each and every symbol by definition or rote memory. There must be a flow of the Spirit and not just head knowledge that is given in the interpretation of dreams.

To arrive at the essence or theme of a dream, remove all of the unnecessary information such as extraneous details, descriptions of things and places, and names. The theme is going to surround the action or focus of the dream that will lead to the understanding of the big picture.

The greatest power in the universe is love.

What is the purpose of a dream? How does God use dreams in our lives? What dreams should we pay attention to and what dreams should we ignore? How much influence should they possess in our lives? Is it safe to ignore them and how safe is it to act on them? The premise of this article is to explain the depths to which the Lord uses dreams to affect our lives. He uses dreams to wake us up, to give us prophetic insight, and to spur us forward toward our dreams and destiny so that we don't lose sight of them.

In a society where success often looks like busyness and hurried insanity, God sometimes talks to us the only way he can…when we are asleep. That is when we are quiet enough to hear him. He can reveal our emotions, our pain, future events, and even the secrets of other's lives to us. The puzzles that God uses in dreams are a secret language known to us, God, and to the people we have the dreams about.

Do dreams have restorative power? Can a good dream life make the dreamer live longer, be healthier, happier, and even thinner? In today's society of rush and clamor, everything is tied to speed and production. Whipping around a drive-through or "speed" surfing the internet, we tend to spend less time sleeping and more time searching. While we sleep our soul continually searches for God. We desire to make intimate contact with the all-knowing Creator.

"He will not let your foot slip–He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep." Psalm 121:3–4 NIV

Sleep is the time God chooses to give us his perspective, to steer us away from harmful events, and to give us life, vision, direction, provision, and destiny. As our understanding is enlightened we will be able to follow the leading our dreams provide.

Having an Understanding Heart

A scoffer may seek wisdom and find none, but spiritual knowledge comes easily to one who has an understanding heart. Wisdom rests in the hearts of those who seek to have spiritual understanding of their dreams. A true dreamer is one who sees the impossible, and knows through God it will become possible. Dreamers are able to see the shadow of things to come as if by moonlight, by joining their faith to believe, the rays of the morning's dawn bring the understanding and visionary clarity.

In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men as they slumber in their beds, He may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings, to turn man from wrongdoing and keep him from pride, to preserve his soul from the pit, his life from perishing by the sword. Job 33:15–18 NIV

A fantastic, almost nightmarish, and horrific dream sequence is recorded in Genesis 15:12–13when Abram the patriarch was cast into the dream realm by hearing the voice of the Lord as a deep sleep fell over him.

As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. Then the lord said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years." NIV

God spoke to Abram in the night seasons so that Abram would listen and hear God's voice while in a peaceful state. Dreams unlock the deepest depths of knowledge and understanding as we peacefully rest in God's embrace. Dreams allow our hearts to express our inner beliefs in a grand way.

God's existence will cause His most excellent harmonies to fill our life and imagination.

The greatest power in the universe is love.

Darkness Into Light by Barbie Breathitt

Darkness Into Light

by Barbie Breathitt

Identity Network
Greatness is birthed in the darkest recesses of our soul. The extraction of this precious oil requires a season of pressure, pain and a desperate search for the light of God's truth. Only when the necessary changes have taken place within the soul, will the anointing that reflects God's glory bubble to the surface.

God conceals Himself in darkness so we are not able to discern the movement of His hands, though they are always at work on our behalf. God gets angry at our sin, not at us; because He knows our sin causes tears of regret to flow when we miss the highest goal, settling for less than He desires. God's anger only last for a solitary moment in the night. Once Holy Spirit's truth is discovered and embraced, God's favor brings great joy at the rising of the morning sun.

We are called to see, apprehend and continually experience God's loving kindnesses. We gain much wisdom through the depths of the process that God works into us in the valley of the shadow of death. His grace enables us to die to self, surrender to His perfect will and learn to walk in His higher ways. God desires to cut the chains that bind us, to release the burdens we carry and the things that weigh us down. When we yield to the pruning we will exit the dark night of the soul, enlightened to a new day, understanding that as we draw closer to knowing God and His redemptive ways, His light will now shine brighter in us than in our past.

God Knows the Divine Plan

Jesus, the Creator of all, hung naked surrounded in total darkness on the cross, dying for the sins of the world; past, present and future. Gross darkness covered the entire earth from the sixth hour until the ninth hour. Even when Jesus was beaten beyond recognition and shrouded in obscurity, God knew exactly where Jesus was. God turned His face away from Jesus so not to look upon the sin Jesus bore for us. When Jesus freely gave His life, was nailed captive to a cross, blinded by a thick veil of gloom and the bitter pain of separation, God knew the divine plan and narrow path where He was leading Jesus for all of eternity. The crucifixion of Jesus was the darkest moment in history followed by the utmost resurrection light the world has ever known when He arose from the dead.

God searches the recesses of our hearts and tests every one to show us what resides within. God knows us completely; yet He is too wonderful and amazing for us to understand. He intently watches our every move and counts our every breath. He knows our steps and understands our very thought processes. God has formed and recorded the words we speak before they are uttered. God has scrutinized our path. He is intimately acquainted with all our ways. He knows when we sit, stand or lay down to rest. God guards and encloses us. He is always before, under, above and behind us at all times with His hand resting gently upon our shoulder.

A Light to Forge Our Path

When we are not able to see the next step, God promises His Word will be a light to forge our path. His Word will transform us and make us better when we emerge from the time of testing and the trying of our soul. Every test we take helps us learn to love. The person who does not love does not know the essence of God, for God is perfect love. God sent Jesus to manifest His love to a sinful world so we can be His children and have eternal life through Him.

God rewards a life of faith that trusts in Him. The praises of His children builds a spiritual habitation for the Lord. His presence brings deliverance, healing and peace. Our praise causes the Holy Spirit to move into our dilemmas so that His light of hope breaks forth in us. When our attention is drawn to the Kings' powerful countenance and we lift up our faces to see the light of His presence, God shines His love upon us. Our King beckons us to gaze full upon His lovely face. He loves us with an everlasting love. As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride so does the Lord rejoice over us.

When we gaze into God's affectionate eyes we can sense the tender love Jesus has for us. When lover's eyes meet they feel the depths of their passion for one another. Nothing is wasted in an infinite God who collects every one of our tears as a glistening treasure and stores them in a heavenly jar. God's compassion is touched by the feelings of our infirmities. Knowing the Holy Spirit has a divine dream plan, that He has never left or forsaken us, causes us to forget the times of intense pain and the years of suffering in darkness.

God controls everything; nothing is beyond His loving touch or wisdom. God does His deepest work during our darkest days. God is infinite light and there is no darkness within Him at all. We are called to enter into God's presence to walk in God's penetrating light.  When we are in the depths of the valley, we hear the distant thunder and the sound of the trumpets' call that brings fear to our heart. So we stand afar off and watch to see the lightening flash and the smoke rising from the mountain encounter of God. Instead of preparing ourselves to boldly rush in; we look for someone else to approach this holy God.

Moses, God's friend, drew near to God by passing through a cloud of thick darkness to enter God's radiant presence. Moses had to journey alone while the Israelites stood and shook in fear at a far distance. They were afraid to be tested, knowing that if they did not repent; their sinful condition would result in their death. They chose to stay in their rebellious condition and listen to a man speak on the behalf of God instead of making the dark cleansing journey into the light of God's presence. The light of God dwells in thick darkness; to see the countenance of His face, one must press in behind the veil.  (Exodus 20)
The greatest power in the universe is love.

Prophetic Signs for an Anointed Year - Prophetic Insight from CHARISMA

Dawn
A new dawn is here. Are you prepared for the prophetic shifts to come? (Flickr/Chris Parmeter)

Prophetic Insight, from Charisma Media
There are no coincidences in God. Everything the Almighty does is intentional, calculated, planned and shared with His prophets. The Biblical holidays contain the mysteries of God's blessings, times and seasons. 2014 is an Ayin (seer) year of the door where opportunities are presenting themselves to those who have spiritual eyes to see the treasures that have been hidden by darkness. Acts 2:20 tells us that the windows of heaven opened at Pentecost with a mighty rushing whirlwind that came from heaven releasing a profound sound with tongues of fire that set on the heads of the 120 (Joel 2:30–31).
The Hebrew year 2015 began September 24, 2014. This year the world will encounter the whirlwind that is full of revelation, signs, wonders and miracles again. Elijah was taken into heaven riding on a whirlwind when he left a double portion of his spirit for his spiritual son Elisha. Elijah left an anointing that turns the hearts of the Fathers back to restore the hearts of disobedient, rebellious children to righteousness (Mal. 4:6, Luke 1:17).
We are living in a time when many children live under the curse of not knowing their natural fathers. Spiritual children are used to build, provide for and are constrained from leaving to fulfill their own callings to support those who are in positions of fathers rather than being trained and released to step into their own destiny and vision. The breath of the Spirit is going to blow through a heavenly door this year. The whirlwind will propel a new and proper alignment so that the 'greater works' mysteries, power, opportunities for global awakening and mass evangelism will release a revolution of life and world changing phenomena.
God is opening the double doors before His anointed people. This is what the Lord said to Cyrus, His chosen king: "I took you by your right hand to help you defeat nations, to strip other kings of their power, and to open city gates that will not be closed again. I will go in front of you and make the mountains flat. I will break the city gates of bronze and cut the iron bars on the gates. I will give you the wealth that is stored in secret places. I will give you those hidden treasures then you will know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you by name. I do this for my servant, Jacob" (Is. 45:1–4).
The earth is aligning with heaven. This is demonstrated in the seven appearances of blood moon tetrads since the time of Christ's birth. Each blood moon appeared at strategic times as God released world changing effects. The sun represents Jesus the beloved Son of God. The moon represents the church reflecting the glory and light of Jesus, the true light of the world. These will be the best of times for those who see and hear to align with God's purposes. It will be the worst of times for those who do not know how to discern the changing times and seasons.
Jacob received his calling and promised inheritance through a dream. He beheld a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. The Lord Himself stood above it and said, "'I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and to your descendants. Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.' Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, 'Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.' He was afraid and said, 'How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven'" (Gen. 28:12–17). We will see God manifest His glorious presence in the darkest places on earth.
Laban divined that he was blessed because of the Lord's favor on Jacob. Jacob was delivered from Laban, his father-in-law's bondage, laborious servitude and imposed poverty. An angel told Jacob in a dream to look up and see God's plan to prosper him through the outcast, despised black, spotted and speckled undesirable sheep and goats. Jacob had faithfully served and prospered Laban but there came a time when he had to separate and build his own house through the wealth God provided (Gen. 30-31). God wants to redeem the down and outcast.
We live in a time of great redemption that is leading us to eternity, abundance, salvation, deliverance and the restoration of living in our original sinless state. The Holy Spirit will manifest His presence in and through the Sons of God by restoring divine health, prosperity, signs, wonders, miracles and resurrection power.
Jesus longs to return for a glorious bride without spot or wrinkle so we are told the bride will make herself ready in blameless holiness. (Eph. 5:27–28) Jesus is not coming back for a sin sick church or a silly immature bride. Jesus will be equally yoked with a mature glorious bride who is moving in great grace and power.
"There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see THE SON OF MAN COMING IN A CLOUD with power and great glory. But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near" (Luke 21:25–28).
The King of Glory wants to manifest Himself through His mature bride. "Lift up your heads, O gates, and lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in! (Psalms 24:9) We are told to lift up our head to open the ancient gates so the King of Glory can come through us. Wisdom will accelerate the release of the "fear of the Lord," great faith, discernment, dreams, visions, prophecy and an outpouring of God's Spirit on all flesh. This will bring about the greatest end-time harvest the world has ever seen. We live in a time where our eyes and ears are blessed to see and hear what the prophets and righteous men of old desired to see and hear but were not living in the fullness of time to see and hear the 'greater works' (Matt. 13:16–17).
There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven. The lunar eclipses or blood moons that are aligning themselves with the Jewish feast days are a heavenly light, sign, season or omen, a divine evidence of days and years or a beacon that foretells God's manifest presence coming through a victorious remnant. Abram looked towards the starry heavens in Gen. 15:5–6 and he believed in the Word of the Lord. It was counted unto him as righteousness.
God used the heavens when Joseph received his calling dream, the Sun (Jacob), the moon (Rachel), and the eleven stars (his brothers) bowed down to him (Gen. 37:9). God used the stars as a sign to announce the birth of Jesus as King when two planets aligned as a bright conjunction in the sky to lead the Wise men to Bethlehem. These events led to major changes in the world.
In the past, we have seen that each time the four blood moons are displayed in the heavenlies, the world changed. (April 25, 31 A.D., Passover; October 19, 31 A.D., Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles; April 14, 32 A.D., Passover; October 7, 32 A.D., the day before Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles; April 3, 33 A.D., Passover; and September 27, 33 A.D., Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles.) These blood moons are not included in the eight because the Oct. 7, 32 A.D., happened before Sukkot. There was a solar eclipse March 19, 33 A.D., weeks before the crucifixion.
Since the time of Jesus' birth there have been seven tetrads (or 4) blood moon eclipses. Seven is the number of God, spiritual perfection, purification and completeness. God rested from creating a perfect earth on the seventh day. He said the seventh day is a holy day of rest. The seventh month is for feast and festival days, and the seventh year was a Sabbath rest for the land. There are seven mysteries or secrets which include the mystery of the Kingdom, the blindness of Israel, the Church, the body of Christ, the first resurrection, the purpose of Satan, the purpose of God and the mystery of Babylon. The seven spirits of God are found in Rev. 1:4, 3:1, 4:5, and 5:6 and Is. 11:2. Each of the seven spirits of God is represented in the Menorah or burning lampstand before the throne of God.
America was discovered by Columbus during the cycle of the blood moons in 1493. Israel became a nation in 1948 and Jerusalem was back in the hands of the Jewish people in 1967.
162–163 A.D.—Great famine, plagues and persecution of Christians.
795–796 A.D.—Charlemagne's campaign ended Arabian invasion into Western Europe.
842–843 A.D.—Rome was taken by Islamic nations.
860–861 A.D.—The Christian Byzantine Empire defeated the Islamic armies in Turkey and stopped the eastern invasion of Europe.
1493–1494 A.D.—The Spanish Inquisitions, torture, theft of property and expulsion of Jews from a Catholic-dominated Spain started the decline of Spain's power.
1949–1950 A.D.—Israel was reborn as a nation, the Arab-Israeli War and the signing of the 1949 Armistice Agreement (Ezekiel 36:24, 28).
1967–1968 A.D.—Israel's Six Day War where they took back Jerusalem from its 70 A.D. capture. Israel regained control of the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank and the Golan Heights.
2014– 2015—New release of resurrection power, signs, wonders and miracles, beginning of the messianic era, Latter Rain outpouring, transference of wealth for mass evangelism.
The Head of the New Year began September 24, 2014, on Rosh Hashanah or the Feast of Trumpets, indicating the beginning of a time of favor and a year of rest (Shemitah) coming on the earth which will end September 23, 2015, at Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, which releases debt cancellation with a celebration of Jubilee and restoration. The blood moon on Passover 2015 will begin on Friday night, April 3, the same date Jesus was crucified in 33 A.D.
We are now half way between the eighth tetrad of (4) blood moons. Eight is the Hebrew number that means to make or cover with fat, to super abound in strength, fertility and abundance. Eight means resurrection. It is above perfection and starts a new cycle or beginning of the messianic era where great blessings both physical and financially will come from the heavenly realms to impact and change the earth. Eight signifies man's ability to transcend limits of physical existence. 2015 is the eighth tetrad, new beginning of resurrection power being released and demonstrated. April 14, 2015, will be the third blood moon during Passover. September 28, 2015, during Sukkot or Feast of Tabernacles the fourth blood moon will be seen in Israel. There will also be a solar eclipse March 20, 2015, when the moon passes between the sun and earth blocking the suns light, between the second and third blood moons. New alignments and the transference of wealth in souls and riches are strategic during these seasons.
God establishes everything by a witness of two. "'Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,' says the Lord of hosts. 'But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap. He will sit as a smelter and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may present to the Lord offerings in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years'" (Mal. 3:1–4).
"'From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,' says the Lord of hosts. 'But you say, "How shall we return?" Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, "How have we robbed You?" In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you!'" (Mal. 3:7–9)
"'Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,' says the Lord of hosts, 'if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows. Then I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of the ground; nor will your vine in the field cast its grapes,' says the Lord of hosts. 'All the nations will call you blessed, for you shall be a delightful land,' says the Lord of hosts" (Mal. 3:10–12).
"Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord gave attention and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the Lord and who esteem His name. 'They will be Mine,' says the Lord of hosts, 'on the day that I prepare My own possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him.' So you will again distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him (Mal. 3:16–18).
"'For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace; and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaff; and the day that is coming will set them ablaze,' says the Lord of hosts, 'so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall. You will tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day which I am preparing,' says the Lord of hosts. 'Remember the law of Moses My servant, even the statutes and ordinances which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel. Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse'" (Mal. 4:1–6).
It is time for the church to arise and shine with revelation knowledge for the true light has come. Dan. 2:20–23 says, "Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him. It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men and knowledge to men of understanding. It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him. To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for You have given me wisdom and power; even now You have made known to me what we requested of You, for You have made known to us the king's matter."
Now is the time to proclaim the great things God is doing in the heavens and on the earth. "It has seemed good to me to declare the signs and wonders which the Most High God has done for me. How great are His signs and how mighty are His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and His dominion is from generation to generation" (Dan. 4:2–3).

Barbie Breathitt: Christlikeness From the Life of Elisha: Tests and Double Mantle (The Elijah List)

Barbie Breathitt:
Christlikeness From the
Life of Elisha:
Tests and Double Mantle

Barbie BreathittTests and a Double Mantle

After Elijah trained his servant Elisha to look and see, listen and hear, and prophesy the word of the Lord, it was time for him to return to Heaven. The heavenly chariot of God carried Elijah away from Elisha into the spiritual expanse of Heaven's eternity outside of time. Elisha was told by Elijah, "If you see me when I am taken from you, [you will receive a double portion of my spirit]..."

Elisha had to pass many tests and persevere in order to walk in Elijah's double mantle (see 2 Kings 2:1-18).

Elijah asked Elisha to stay in Gilgal, the place of cutting, circumcision, and the rolling away of reproach, but he refused. This is a picture for us that when God removes our past failures and reproach, we must walk through the gates of authority into the new place with God; and so Elijah then moved on to Bethel, the place or house of God, the gates of Heaven. Bethel was a place where people went to seek counsel from God. Elisha followed Elijah to Bethel to learn how to obtain God's counsel.

We must follow the leading of the Holy Spirit to the next place of testing to progress spiritually. We cannot remain complacent or stagnant; the river of God always flows.

Elijah calling ElishaNext, the sons of the prophets came to Elisha in Bethel and said, "Do you know that the Lord will take away your master from over you today?'And Elisha said, "Yes I know; be still!" Elijah told Elisha to remain in Bethel while he went on to Jericho. But Elisha said, "I will not leave you" (2 Kings 2:3 NASB).

The sons of the prophets in Jericho, a place of fragrance and warfare, had also been shown that Elijah was going to be taken away from Elisha that day.

From Jericho, Elijah and Elisha traveled on to Jordan, a place of flowing down or descending, where fifty men of the sons of the prophets stood opposite them at the Jordan River. Elijah took his mantle, folded it together, and struck the waters of the Jordan, which divided, allowing both prophets to cross over on dry ground.

When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you." And Elisha said, "Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me." He said, "You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so."

As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to Heaven. Elisha saw it [the chariot] and cried out, "My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" And he saw Elijah no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. 2 Kings 2:9-12 NASB

However, Elijah did not hand his mantle onto Elisha; Elisha had to pick it up after Elijah was taken into Heaven.

What Was the Significance of Elijah's Mantle For Elisha?

The word mantle in Hebrew is addereth; its root word being adar, which is also the word for the last month on the Hebrew calendar. The month of Adar is the best time to remove any personal barriers to holiness, thus it is a time to create the potential for the greatest joy. Adar is the final month of the year, i.e. it completes the year, and hence it is a time of completion.

The root meaning of adar is glorious, splendid, marvelous, and mighty. In a noun form it is rendered as a cloak or mantle.

Crossing JordanHe also took up the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and returned and stood by the bank of the Jordan. He took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and struck the waters and said, "Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?" And when he also had struck the waters, they were divided here and there; and Elisha crossed over. 2 Kings 2:13-14 NASB

Jewish traditions indicate that the mantle that fell from Elijah was a tallith or prayer shawl. The tallith of a prophet or master teacher would have dark purple-blue threads in the corner tassel. People believed that the purple thread contained miracle power.

This is why the woman with the issue of blood wanted to touch the hem of Jesus' tallith or garment. When she was healed, Jesus said, "Who touched Me?...I felt virtue leave Me." Then He told her, "Your faith has made you whole," not a purple thread (see Matthew 9:20-22 and Luke 8:43-48).

Elijah's tallith, mantle, or "adar" symbolized that Elisha had removed any barriers to his relationship with God. He was no longer the servant but now stepped into the place of the prophet he had served. Elijah's mantle was a doorway to God's power.

Elijah told Elisha that if he saw him taken, he would have his desire to carry on the prophetic ministry with a double portion of his spirit.

ElishaThe mantle is a symbol of joy and completion. Elijah left his mantle as a sign that he had completed his assignment. Elisha picked up Elijah's mantle indicating the start of a new year; he was picking up where Elijah left off and beginning his own ministry as a prophet.

Elijah's mantle was a symbol of an agreement of power and authority between Elijah and God. Elisha's picking up Elijah's mantle symbolized that he was entering into the same agreement with God. When Elisha used Elijah's mantle to part the Jordan River, God established His agreement or covenant with Elisha.

What The Double Portion Looks Like

Everyone is at a different level of hearing and seeing in their spiritual understanding. Elisha had walked and been personally trained by Elijah for years. He had been tested and tried in spiritual disciplines. The sons of the prophets had been through training as well, yet they did not possess the level of seeing that Elisha had developed. Elisha saw the chariot of fire and the horses come to separate him from Elijah. He cried out, "My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" (2 Kings 2:12 NASB).

The sons of the prophets only saw the whirlwind the chariot created. The sons of the prophets were left wondering if Elijah had been translated to Heaven or if he had possibly been transported to another geographic location. They had to search for three days in the natural to come into peace. Elisha knew Elijah had been taken to Heaven because he saw beyond the natural into the invisible realm of the Spirit.

Elijah's MantleNow when the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho opposite him saw him, they said, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." And they came to meet him and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

They said to him, "Behold now, there are with your servants fifty strong men, please let them go and search for your master; perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has taken him up and cast him on some mountain or into some valley." And he said, "You shall not send." But when they urged him until he was ashamed, he said, "Send." They sent therefore fifty men; and they searched three days but did not find him.

They returned to him while he was staying at Jericho; and he said to them, "Did I not say to you, 'Do not go'?" 2 Kings 2:15-18 NASB

The New Testament shares an example of the audible voice of God speaking from Heaven when Jesus foretold of His death. Some that stood by didn't hear anything. Others who were present in the crowd heard God's voice manifested in thunder, while still others thought it was an angel.

So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, "An angel has spoken to Him." Jesus answered and said, "This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes." John 12:29-30 NASB

The names of both Elijah (meaning "the Lord is my God" or spiritual champion) and Elisha (meaning "God will save me" or protected) carries the record of what they represent, but not necessarily how they saw, if they are thought to be seers. Elijah's name means God is Jehovah or YHVH is my God. He functioned as the Father's recorder on earth.

In the case of God's servant Elijah, the chariot was a trans-dimensional carrier of God's servant. The chariot of God transported Elijah out of time into the eternal realm where Elijah had always existed in heavenly places. When the fullness of time came, God reached down to retrieve the recording of Himself He had placed within Elijah.

Elijah came to restore all things back to God. He was called to turn the hearts of the Fathers back to the sons, and to turn the sons' hearts back to the fathers', to make ready a people for God lest God curse the earth (see Malachi 4). Elijah's anointing was to restore righteousness and protect the earthly realm from being struck with a curse caused by sin.

Elisha's name means "GOD is salvation" or "My God is salvation." He functioned under a double portion of Elijah's spirit.

Walk Like the Prophet Elisha

Elisha's eyes saw beyond the veil of the natural into the supernatural realm where God's army of fiery angels and chariots reside. His eyes were not limited by situations or hard facts. He knew to look beyond the natural to see God's provision. He trusted more in the realm of faith than what seemed to appear in the natural.
Prayer opens our eyesWhen fear blinded Elisha's servant, the prophet's prayer was able to open the attendant's spiritually blind eyes to see the coexisting spiritual realms of angels.

Knowing that there are more for us than against us brings a peace beyond our present understanding.

Prayer delivers us from fear. Prayer opens our eyes to see God's ever-present answer, while at the same time prophetic decree will blind our enemies and place them at our mercy. For God to trust us at this level, it requires us to develop greater levels of obedience of compassion. God wants to trust us with the lives of our enemies.

God tests and tries us until He knows that we will not execute our own judgment or harm people in any way.

When God delivers our enemies into our hands, we must return good for evil, blessing for cursing, and lovingkindness for abuse. The Lord is the only one who should ever move in judgment. He said, "Vengeance is Mine." We have no right to be vengeful.

It is God's place to vindicate us.

We are called to love our enemies, to be kind to those who persecute, use, and abuse our kindness.

We should lead our enemies to salvation, and their eyes will be opened to God's saving word, loving spirit, and grace. It is time to love like God loves; see like God sees; obey what God's Word says, and then do what God does.

Now when the attendant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was circling the city. And his servant said to him, "Alas, my master! What shall we do?" So he answered, "Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them." Then Elisha prayed and said, "O Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." And the Lord opened the servant's eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 2 Kings 6:15-17 NASB

Elisha prayedWhen Elisha's enemies came down off the mountain to pursue him, Elisha prayed. We should follow his example. Elisha's prayers struck his enemies with blindness. This removed the enemy's power and control. They were forced into a vulnerable place, wandering in darkness and confusion.

The army had come to do the prophet great harm, but God protected him. The prophet placed his trust in God. In this new state of total dependence and humiliation, the enemy had to trust and blindly follow Elisha to Samaria. Elisha said, "Follow me and I will bring you to the man whom you seek" (2 Kings 6:19 NASB). (Photo courtesy: Global Recordings Network)

When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to the Lord and said, "Strike this people with blindness, I pray." So He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha. Then Elisha said to them, "This is not the way, nor is this the city; follow me and I will bring you to the man whom you seek." And he brought them to Samaria. 2 Kings 6:18-19 NASB

Elisha's enemies had to walk through the process of trusting the one they were sent to destroy. Once they arrived at the promised location, Elisha prayed that God would reopen their blind eyes. Their vision was restored. New vision was given in the midst of their enemies.

When they had come into Samaria, Elisha said, "O Lord, open the eyes of these men, that they may see." So the Lord opened their eyes and they saw; and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria. 2 Kings 6:20 NASB
Many of us have been wounded by an enemy or betrayed by a close friend, but we are to respond to them with God's lovingkindness and compassion.

Then the king of Israel when he saw them, said to Elisha, "My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?" He answered, "You shall not kill them. Would you kill those you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow?... 2 Kings 6:21-22 NASB

CompassionElisha told the King of Israel to respond according to the greatness of God's loving-kindness, to make his enemies the objects of compassion in the presence of all their captors. Elisha encouraged the king to feed the Arameans, to provide for and care for his enemies instead of killing them. The king prepared a feast for the enemy soldiers and they ate to their fill.

"...Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master." So he prepared a great feast for them; and when they had eaten and drunk he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the marauding bands of Arameans did not come again into the land of Israel. 2 Kings 6:22-23 NASB

Elisha's mercy triumphed over judgment.

Great grace leads us to victory. The King of Israel's enemies were delivered into his hands. The King was eager to execute judgment and destroy his enemies, but the prophet carefully redirected his focus to blessing and not destruction.

Good will always triumph over evil. Love will also bring forth a better result than hate.

Never greet your enemy in the same malignant spirit. Never return evil for evil but learn to bless instead of curse. We are not of this world, so we cannot respond in the spirit of this world. God is love so we must respond in the power of His might.
