'Out of the Dark': Mandisa Tells CBN and GMA of Fight with Suicidal Depression - BN News

'Out of the Dark': Mandisa Tells CBN and GMA of Fight with Suicidal Depression

CBN News 04-26-2017
Watch part of Mandisa's upcoming interview on The 700 Club as she talks about her struggle and disappointment with God.
The full interview airs in May.
Christian artist and Grammy Award-winning singer Mandisa is opening up about how she overcame a painful struggle with depression after the death of a dear friend.
Mandisa spoke with "The 700 Club" about the struggle that began after her close friend Kisha died from breast cancer. It was a tragedy that left her shaken.
"My depression was rooted in disappointment with God," she said. "I'm learning to trust and to rest in the character of who God is, over my need to understand and to have all the answers."
"This is something that I will see fully when I see him face-to-face, and I know that Kisha is with Jesus right now," she continued.

Mandisa also opened up about her deep pain on "Good Morning America" Wednesday.
She revealed that her battle with depression became so intense three years ago that she almost committed suicide.
"It got pretty bad, to the point where if I had not gotten off that road I would not be sitting here today," Mandisa told GMA co-host Robin Roberts. "I was this close to listening to that voice that told me, 'You can be with Jesus right now, Mandisa. All you have to do is take your life.'"
But she says God rescued her and she finally got help for the depression after friends held an intervention outside a movie theater.
"I came out of the movie theater, this was after years of me being in that dark place and ignoring everybody, and I noticed that my car had a bunch of sticky notes all over it," she told GMA.
"As I got closer to it I realized that those notes said things like, 'We love you. Come back to us. We miss you,'" she continued. "And then as I got closer to my car, a group of my friends, who I had shut out, they were there."
"And they had been waiting at that movie theater as I sat there and watched two movies, not just one, they waited there for over four hours for me," she said. "And they pretty much had an intervention and they said, 'We love you just as you are but we love you too much to leave you that way.'"
Mandisa has a new album which reflects how God lifted her out of that time of severe depression. Entitled "Out of the Dark," it will be released May 19.
"When I look at where we began and where we ended, like my heart and my soul, and the lessons that I learn at the end of this album process, I know that this album is not just for other people," she told "The 700 Club."
"I can see that God used it to lift me out and to help me to see what he was doing and how he was working through that... throughout the entire process," she said.
"And it's called 'Out of the Dark' because that's what God brought me out of," she continued.
Along with her GMA interview, Mandisa also performed her new single "Unfinished." Here's the Official Lyric Video:
The Christian artist blogged about the song on her website:
"I've been thinking about the importance of the message in my latest song. I beat myself up … a lot. I would never talk to anyone the way I speak to myself sometimes. Ask me what my best qualities are and it would take me a long time to compile a list. But ask me what I don't like about myself and buckle up, because I can rattle off that list in 3.5 seconds flat! I know I'm not alone in that harmful habit. I believe it is time for the children of God to stop wallowing in shame and regret, and start living lives of freedom, power, and authority. We do that by taking those destructive thoughts captive, and making them obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5)."
Mandisa entered the spotlight after becoming a finalist on American Idol's fifth season.
She received a GRAMMY® for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for her best-selling and critically acclaimed project, "Overcomer."

Prophetic Prayer Warriors Form a Shield Around Donald Trump

PAUL STRAND/CBN   charisma news
The incoming Trump administration is all over the secular news these days with talk of what the president-elect is doing, his naming of cabinet nominees and now their various hearings.
There's also a lot of spiritual news concerning the Trump administration here in Washington. On Thursday, a new group called POTUS Shield (as in President of the United States) gathered inside the National Press Club.
There are hundreds of prayer warriors and a number of well-known prophetic types like Cindy and Michael Jacobs. They've come together to build a prayer shield and speak words of life into the Trump administration.
"We're really not looking for Mr. Trump or any human to change America, but we know God can and will do it," Alveda King, director of Civil Rights for the Unborn, told CBN News at the POTUS Shield gathering.
On Capitol Hill, a number of pastors from Virginia and Maryland gathered to pray for and cheer on Ben Carson, the HUD Secretary nominee, at his Senate hearing.
Virginia Beach Pastor Eric Majette said, "We're actually a prayer group. We pray for leaders across our nation—a group of pastors come together to pray for our nation and our leaders, particularly the new administration."
Richmond Pastor Leon Benjamin spoke to the fears of many in the African-American community that the Trump administration means trouble for them.
"We must believe for the best," Benjamin told CBN News. "It doesn't matter who is in the White House as long as there is faith that God has not forsaken us and that He has not left us because of a transition of power. That would be dreadful for us as pastors and leaders to say 'Oh my God, we're doomed now!' So we're very hopeful."

By Shira Sorko-Ram

I remember sitting with a group of about 12 Israeli Messianic leaders in Jerusalem at the invitation of CBN’s Pat Robertson in 2003.

Pat had invited us to give him our perspective concerning the state of the Messianic Jewish body in Israel - its progress and challenges in that still nascent stage of bringing the Good News to our Israeli people.

Afterward, Pat asked us our opinion of George W. Bush’s presidency. We answered in general terms that we were happy to have a U.S. president who professed to be a Christian and who seemed to have some understanding of the importance and needs of the Jewish state.

Pat responded that he felt Bush was in for a great fall because he was the first president to advocate a division of the Land of Israel with the Arabs.

I remember I was stunned. True, the Book of Joel says that God will enter in judgment “on behalf of My people and My inheritance, Israel” with those who “have divided up My land.” (Joel 3:2) And everybody who reads the Bible knows God promised the land of Israel to the people of Israel multiple times. That’s why both the people and the land are called Israel in the Bible.

But, on June 25, 2002, President George W. Bush declared “…the United States of America will support the creation of a Palestinian state…”

There is no doubt in my mind that when God said, “I will bless those who bless you” (i.e., Abraham and his descendants), He meant it. It is clear to me that one of the principle reasons America is still the number one superpower in the world and is a nation where people all over the world dream of living, is the American people’s unique relationship with the people of Israel. And the backbone of this alliance has been the Bible-believing Christians together with the Jewish American community.

But as today’s younger generation becomes ever more secular (pagan), the love for the people who gave the world the Bible is weakening. Furthermore, as American Jews become more secular, their love for the state of Israel is also waning.

There is no other nation in the world that could take America’s place in its support for Israel emotionally and financially. If America’s support dwindles, Israel will still survive because the Bible says so. But at what cost? The Israeli media continually discusses the threat of Hezbollah’s 100,000 missiles trained on this tiny nation. Israeli military leaders are all preparing for the next war against Iran via Hezbollah.

And all Israel is waiting with baited breath to see what the new President Donald Trump will do.

What CBN's Chris Mitchell Saw Near the Frontlines with ISIS - CBN News

What CBN's Chris Mitchell Saw Near the Frontlines with ISIS
CBN News 09-30-2016
When ISIS militants stormed northern Iraq declaring an Islamic caliphate in 2014, thousands fled their homes or were killed.
Many were Christians and religious minorities who were threatened to convert to Islam or be killed.
A statement released by ISIS specifically warned Christians saying, "You will not have safety, even in your dreams, until you embrace Islam."
Today some 100,000 ethnic and religious minorities try to find a glimmer of safety in overcrowded refugee camps. Others were not so lucky, having fallen by the sword of Islamic militants.
Just outside the city of Sinjar, Iraq, thee are more than 20 mass graves, the final burial place of those who died at the hands of the Islamic State.
More than 1,500 Yazidis, mostly men, were killed and buried there. Clothes, teeth, and human bones are still left in the graves, a sober reminder of the serious threat ISIS poses in the region.
As the battle to retake ISIS territory continues to wage on, many expect to see dozens of more mass graves.
CBN Middle East Bureau Chief Chris Mitchell recently returned from near the frontlines in the battle against ISIS. He met with Christian refugees who had plenty of horrific stories to tell. He spoke with Christian World News about what he saw.

Archaeologists: King Hezekiah Really Did Destroy Idols

Israeli archaeologists believe they have evidence that the biblical King Hezekiah did indeed destroy the high places and idols in the land of Israel as described in the Bible, evidence officials say highlights Israel's past connection to the land and helps draw the country's boundaries today.
Calling it "an important and unusual discovery," the Israel Antiquities Authority said excavations in the Tel Lachish National Park in central Israel revealed a "gate-shrine" from the First Temple period, about the 8th century B.C. It's the largest known gate from the First Temple period in the country.
The Bible says King Hezekiah "removed the high places, broke down the sacred pillars, cut down the Asherah poles." (2 Kings 18:4).
"The size of the gate is consistent with the historical and archaeological knowledge we possess, whereby Lachish was a major city and the most important one after Jerusalem," excavation director Sa'ar Ganor said.
According to the biblical narrative, everything took place at the city gates where the elders, judges, governors, kings and officials sat on benches.
"These benches were found in our excavation," Ganor said.
The IAA conducted the excavation from January through March at the initiative of the Ministry of Jerusalem and Heritage in cooperation with the Nature and Parks Authority. The excavation completely exposed the gate, which was partially uncovered in a joint Tel Aviv University, British excavation decades ago. The plan is to develop the Tel Lachish National Park.
The 80-by-80-foot Lachish city gate is preserved to a height of 16 feet. It consists of six chambers—three on each side, with the city's main street passing between them.
Artifacts Reveal Details
Artifacts discovered in its rooms give clues as to how they were used 2,800 years ago. Benches with armrests were in the first chamber. At the foot of the benches were many finds, including jars, scoops for loading grain and jar handles bearing the name of the official or a seal impression indicating they belonged to the king.
The IAA said the jars seem to relate to the kingdom of Judah's military and administrative preparations for the war against Assyrian King Sennacherib in the late 8th century B.C.
According to Ganor, "A staircase ascended to a large room where there was a bench upon which offerings were placed. An opening was exposed in the corner of the room that led to the holy of holies."
Ganor said they were excited to find two four-horned altars and scores of ceramic finds, including lamps, bowls and stands in the room. He said the horns on the altar had been "intentionally truncated."
"That is probably evidence of the religious reform attributed to King Hezekiah, whereby religious worship was centralized in Jerusalem and the cultic high places that were built outside the capital were destroyed," Ganor said.
Besides cutting off the horns of the altar, apparently Hezekiah had a toilet installed in the "holy of holies" to further signify the abolition of worship and as the "ultimate desecration" of the place.
The "toilet" was a chair-shaped stone with a hole in the middle found in the corner of the room.  It was apparently symbolic, as tests showed it had never been used.
According to the IAA, archaeological research has identified stones like this as toilets. The idea of using a toilet to defile cultic locations is even mentioned in the Bible, as in the case of Jehu when he destroyed the cult of Ba'al (2 Kings 10:27). It's the first time the phenomenon has been confirmed archaeologically.
Israeli officials were excited about the discovery. Minister of Jerusalem and Heritage Ze'ev Elkin said the discovery is an example of how excavations "show us time and time again how biblical tales that are known to us become historical and archaeological stories."
Culture and Sport Minister Miri Regev said the discovery deepened Israel's "connection to our ancestors who walked this land."

"The uncovering of these finds joins a long list of discoveries that enlighten us about our historic past, a past that is manifested in our country's soil and in the writings of the Book of Books," Regev said.
"The Bible—the founding book of the Jewish people—draws the country's boundaries and the heritage of the Jewish people that was exiled from its country and returned to its homeland. It boldly commemorates the way of our forefathers, the prophets, the kings and the judges," she said.
Shaul Goldstein, director general of the Nature and Parks Authority, said Tel Lachish is one of the most "quintessential places" that offers "proof of Israel's hold on the its land."
The gate is currently undergoing a conservation process in preparation to open it to visitors.

Jesus Rocks Hard-Core Buddhist's World - SHANNON WOODLAND, JULIE BLIM/CBN CHARISMA NEWS

Jesus Rocks Hard-Core Buddhist's World

Join us on the new C-Pop podcast where Taylor and Jessilyn discuss, debate and sometimes deride pop culture with a strong sense of humor and a focus on Christ. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com.

"I just remember when I woke up each morning, I would smell incense seeping into my room. And there were statues of Buddhas. ... "

This was a normal day in the life of young Alex Chu. His parents were devout Buddhists and trained their children in the family religion.
"I wanted to honor my parents. However, there was never a personal relationship with any of the Buddhas. It was always at a distance."
Religion wasn't the only obligation that put him under pressure.
"Accomplishments, ambitions and achievements were essentially the non-negotiables, that which we strive for. My dad was very successful academically and professionally having two doctorates, including one from Harvard. Living in his footsteps was quite a bit challenging growing up. My mom always told me that she loved me. And my dad often times would love me by telling me that I could accomplish anything I put my mind to. "
Alex lived up to his parents' expectations and followed the Buddhist customs—but there was a cost.
"The pressure made me feel like I'm only OK if I get straight A's or if I'm at the top of my class. The feedback that I would receive often times from my studies would be, 'Oh, you got a 99 percent on this test. Well, it should've been 100.' That was just the way in which they would motivate to do better. And that was pretty customary for a lot of Asian-Americans growing up."
As he got older, he started to question his faith.
"And it wasn't probably till high school until I started to think on my own, and not only question my own faith, but am I going to take what the media says, what we hear on TV and watch as truth? Or am I going to be able to think on my own?"
Alex would eventually find the truth in college—but not in a religion or philosophy class. He witnessed it through the Christians in his dorm.
"They seemed very tightknit, very friendly. But even more so, there was a lot of joy on their faces. They didn't seem to have a lot pressure on them."
And he discovered something even more compelling.
"The unconditional love that is preached in the Christian faith. The relationship with God that you can have is something that was a surprise to me in many ways."
In his second year, he asked one of the guys if he could go with him to an InterVarsity Christian Fellowship meeting.
"For the first time, I heard about the grace of God."
But feelings alone weren't enough to convince Alex to abandon his parents' faith. He needed rational answers to his many questions.
"The problem of evil, or why does evil still exist in the world? I wondered about the historical reliability of Scripture and the inspiration of Scripture as well."
His decision hinged on the most important question of all.
"Who is Jesus, and is He who He says He is?"
So Alex joined a Bible study to find out.
"Well, what impressed me about Jesus in the Gospels was the authority with which He spoke, but also just the love that He had and compassion for all people. And so I had to discern that based off of how Jesus interacted in Scripture and His claims, and as I reflected upon it, I came to that conclusion that he was indeed the Son of God. And at that moment, I also prayed a personal prayer to God. And I was completely convinced that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for my sins that I may have life eternally with Him. "
Now, Alex had to tell his parents he had become a Christian. It took years, but eventually they accepted his decision. After college, Alex worked as an engineer before he answered God's call to go to seminary. He also married Michelle, a Christian, and today he and Michelle are busy raising three children.
"As an Asian-American that was always trying to seek approval and achieve things, it's meant everything to me to recognize that He loves me unconditionally and offers an eternal life with Him."

CBN's New 'SuperBook' Sparks Salvation Through Animation for Thousands - STEVE STRANG CHARISMA MAGAZINE

Superbook
(CBN)
Strang Report, by Steve Strang, Founder of Charisma magazine
One of the most exciting partnerships we've done lately is working with CBN on a brand-new version of SuperBook. My sons grew up watching the animated stories about the Bible originally done in 1983. Now CBN has updated them and they are being distributed on television around the world, especially in Southeast Asia.
Recently, Gordon Robertson was in our offices with some of his staff to discuss SuperBook because we are distributing the videos in the retail trade. While CBN could fulfill videos to its partners, it recognized it did not have the expertise to do it at the retail level. Our Charisma House team was able to get it into Family Christian stores and in many other Christian stores, as well as on amazon.com, CBD.com and other internet retailers.
When I have leaders visiting the office, I like to record a podcast for my "Strang Report." It was fun to interview Gordon, who has much more broadcast experience than me, about this project and to learn more about the background of SuperBook. He tells how people can learn the plan of salvation through animation, especially in nations that know little or nothing about the gospel. It's also great for discipling people.
steve-gordon-studioYou'll enjoy hearing Gordon and me talk about how children learn from SuperBook and even start Bible studies, along with other interesting stories.
So listen to the podcast and then subscribe to hear other podcasts.
Gordon tells how to get the free SuperBookBible App available on Kindle, the Google store, i-Tunes and other platforms. You'll get the first 13 episodes and a lot of other things.
And, if you'd like to have the episodes on DVD to have at home to play again and again for your children or grandchildren, you can buy them wherever Christian videos are sold or online.
