Interpreting Your Dreams: Is It About You? - JOHN E. THOMAS CHARISMA NEWS

Interpreting Your Dreams: Is It About You?

What are the skills we need to interpret dreams? (Max Pixel/Public Domain)
A dream without an interpretation is an experience without meaning. It may have been a nice dream, but it won't have the impact God intended until we understand its meaning and respond.
In my last article, I explained that the most important key to interpreting dreams is a relationship with the author of dreams—we need revelation if we want to understand what we are dreaming. As we begin to marry revelation with skill, our consistency and impact will grow.
What are the skills we need to interpret dreams? The first is learning to recognize who the dream is about.
Who Is the Dream For?
Has anyone ever come up to you and said, "Hey, I had a dream about you"? But as they told you the dream, you realized it couldn't possibly be about you. You played only a minor role in the dream, and the dream's content or message made no sense in your life.
This is common. Just because a person is in a dream doesn't mean the dream is about them.
To interpret a dream correctly, we have to determine who the dream is for. We can do this by asking a simple question: What role does the dreamer play in this dream? In most dreams, the dreamer will occupy one of three positions: the focus of the dream, a participant in the dream or an observer in the dream.
The Focus of the Dream
If the dreamer is the focus, the dream will often be in "first person"—meaning the dream is seen through the dreamer's eyes. They are experiencing the dream.
Imagine being the person with the camera, and the dream is the movie you're filming. Your job is to follow the star. Who is the center of action? Is it the dreamer or someone else?
If the dreamer is the center of action, the dream is about the dreamer. They are the focus. This is what we call an intrinsic dream. The dreamer is interacting with other dream elements, and their actions are essential to the dream's plot. If the dreamer weren't part of the dream, there would be no story line, and the plot would fall apart.
When the dreamer is the focus of the dream, the dream is about the dreamer.
A Participant in the Dream
What if the dreamer is part of the dream and interacting with other elements in the dream—but they aren't essential to the plot? Instead, all parts are equally involved? If you took the dreamer out of the dream, the story wouldn't fall apart, but it would change the dream and leave gaps in it.
In this type of dream, multiple people (at least two, sometimes many) are doing something. Maybe the dream is about a group of bicyclists heading up a mountain, and different cyclists are having problems. One has a flat tire, another pulls a groin muscle, several are having other issues—and the dreamer is just one of the cyclists within the group. This is a classic participating dream.
When the dreamer is part of a group, the dream is not specifically about the dreamer. It is about the group the dreamer is a part of. Is the group their family? If so, the interpretation would apply to their family. If the group is people from church, it could be about what is happening in their church. If their co-workers are part of the dream, it could be about their workplace.
This is called an extrinsic dream. The dream is about the group, not directly about the dreamer. However, the issues presented in the dream will affect the dreamer to the extent they participate in the action.
An Observer in the Dream
When the dreamer is simply observing the dream, they have little to no impact at all on the dream's plot. Sometimes they feel like a "ghost" in the sense that they're in the dream, but no one sees or hears them. They are simply watching what happens.
This is another kind of extrinsic dream. The dream is not about the dreamer but about the person or group they are observing. Who is the focus of the activity? Whose actions affect the way the dream plays out? That person is the key. The dream's message is for them.
What Is God Doing?
Most dreams (around 90 percent) are intrinsic dreams. God is speaking to us about us. He is helping us overcome obstacles, change our thinking, encourage our progress, give us hope for the future or correct our course.
Sometimes, however, He tells us what is happening with other people or groups. We'll discuss this more in the future, but here's the thing to remember: Every time God shows us something about someone else or a future event, He is inviting us to pray. Extrinsic dreams are always intended to inspire intercession.
Keep dreaming! You can ensure your dreams draw you into deeper relationship with Jesus by asking Him what He is doing. What is He saying? What does He intend by giving you these dreams? Grow in your skill to interpret by studying to show yourself approved (2 Tim. 2:15).

What Are the Three Parts of Prophecy? - KRIS VALLOTTON Charisma News

The three parts of prophecy are Revelation, Interpretation, and Application. In order to be effective when we have a word for someone else, or we receive a prophetic word, we need to understand these three aspects of prophecy.
Revelation
What is God saying? The person who delivers the prophetic word is responsible for the revelation of the word. It may come as a dream, a vision, through nature, or many other ways.
Interpretation
What does the revelation mean? Prophetic people need to realize that just because they received the revelation does not mean that they also have the interpretation. We often get into trouble when we try to interpret a prophetic revelation without first receiving God's direction and clarity.
Application
What should we do with the prophetic word once we know what it means? We should always involve wise leaders in our lives when we receive directional prophetic words. They should help us to devise a plan to actually apply the prophetic word to our life and walk it out.
Some time ago, several of us traveled to a conference where there was training on how to prophesy. With about 70 people in the room, we were all prophesying to a woman in the front of the room. We completed the ten prophecies allowed in the prophetic exercise, and then began to judge the words given to the woman. Suddenly, a man in the back of the room stood to his feet and said, "You have a yellow shirt on!"
Immediately the woman fell to the ground, crying hysterically. The man continued to prophesy, saying things like, "The sun is yellow...the moon is yellow," and so on. When the woman finally regained her composure, the leader of the class asked her what the word meant to her.
She explained, "I have a son who is autistic and I told the Lord today, 'If You are going to heal my son, have someone tell me that I have on a yellow shirt. ... '"
The man who delivered this prophetic word stepped out of bounds and tried to give the woman an interpretation of the color yellow. Although the Holy Spirit used the word powerfully in the woman's life, the entire prophetic word was simply, "you have a yellow shirt on."
When God stops speaking, we should too! People who are prophesying often feel pressure to give an interpretation for every prophecy they have, particularly when the prophetic word seems ambiguous or even silly. It is astounding what some people think their prophetic words mean.
The following is a profound example of a powerful prophetic word that was misinterpreted by the person who delivered it. Remember, we don't have to be profound to be powerful.
Why is it important for us to only share what we believe the Holy Spirit is telling us—and not give interpretations unless we are first given clear direction by the Lord?

"A Word to Help You Interpret Your Dreams!" Doug Addison

Dream Symbols: Water, Rivers, Oceans and Ice

Hey Dreamers! People seem to love my blogs on dreams. So, here are some of my favorite water symbols to help you interpret dreams. If you are remembering your dreams, you are on the right track. The next step is to write them down and figure out what God is saying through them.

Symbols: Symbols do change from dream to dream, and from dreamer to dreamer. But there are common themes that you can apply to your dreams about water. Here is what I have found:

• Water, oceans, beaches, rivers, ice: Water can represent aspects of spiritual life, while oceans often represent humanity. Beaches can symbolize people, because multitudes are compared to the grains of sand on a beach (see for example Genesis 22:17). But the beach can also represent a time of recreation, especially if you live near it. (Photo via Wikimedia)

• Rivers can point to moves of God and it is important to recognize the context of the water. Is it moving fast or is it barely moving, almost still?

• Ice and snow can represent things of the Spirit that are being saved for later.

• Swimming: Swimming in water can represent the spiritual aspect of life. Although swimming can be good, notice the context of the water: is it clear or dirty, fast flowing or stagnant, or shallow or deep?

Context is key: The context of how you are swimming in water will help you understand more about what is happening with your spiritual life. Let's look at context using swimming as our example.

ElijahList Prophetic Resources

If you are swimming in clear water, it means that your spiritual life is refreshing and life-producing. Swimming in dirty water indicates that some issues might need to be addressed or healed. If you are swimming in fast-flowing water, get ready for things to accelerate and get really exciting.

Swimming in stagnant water indicates that you may be stuck and need to start moving again. If the water is shallow, this indicates that you might be too comfortable and need a challenge. Swimming in deep water shows that you are maturing spiritually and possibly taking more risks.

Of course, remember that these are generalizations.

More Dream Symbols – here are some more symbols you might have encountered:

• Boat: organizations or personal job or ministry, depending on the type of boat
• Bridge: transition, season change
• Dam: things being held back, power
• Fish: sport, people, gift to help others, outreach-oriented
• Floods: major move of the Spirit, cleansing of old ways, warning of disaster

• Ice: move of the Spirit that will come later, slippery time
• Lighthouse: spiritual guidance, keeps you from danger
• Ocean, sea: large move of the Spirit, humanity, great influence, many people
• Oyster: situation that may produce a spiritual blessing
• Rain: blessing, refreshing time in the spirit, unclear time, move of God

• Swimming: move in the spirit, recreation, spiritual life
• Water: the spirit, spiritual life, Holy Spirit, the spiritual realm, refreshment (Photo by Jennifer Page "His Joy" via elijahshopper.com)

Next steps: I would challenge you to keep a dream journal or a pad of paper next to your bed to write down your dreams right away. When you encounter a dream with some aspect of water, ask God to help you with the interpretation and use these key symbols just to start.

You can find out more about dreams in my book Understand Your Dreams Now: Spiritual Dream Interpretation.

Keep dreaming!

Blessings,

Doug Addison

Re-air: Knowing the Times

Monday, April 21, 2014

For the times in which we live, it is imperative to know the Lord's voice. We all hear in part and know in part. Therefore, our job is to cultivate a personal relationship with God—one that is based on our own experiences rather than those of others.
The key to walking in peace and true joy is becoming like Him.
