"You're A Messenger of Courage: For Such A Time As This" by Joey LeTourneau - The Elijah List

"And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, 'The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!'" Judges 6:12
"Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!" Luke 1:28
As happened with Gideon and Mary in these two instances, my heart has been pulled for the courage rising up within God's children to step into their purpose and calling. It's not just any courage, but a kairos kind of courage that empowers us to leap beyond the hope of our calling and into its appointed time of action and fruitfulness.
It's a crossing over of the mind, and an empowerment of the heart to fully believe, fully receive, and then to seize the purposes and promises we've prayed and waited for as the moment arises.
The last few weeks I've found myself sharing about a quote I hadn't recalled in a long time, from a movie called "We Bought A Zoo." I believe the words are very relevant to us in this time as we learn to seize what God has placed before us:
"You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it." (We Bought A Zoo)
I believe this is a now word for you and me. We are being presented "suddenly" moments, for such a time as this, to step into a breakthrough that is bigger than our hope can comprehend.
These might be moments that look like immense risk or require vulnerability, but we have to seize that incoming wave at the opportune time with fresh courage. (Photo via Wikipedia)
We must realize the breakthrough starts within us – so it can be brought to life all around us – by stepping outside our comfort zone and recognizing the new thing that He is doing now.
Breaking Out of Our Comfort Zone
"I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it?" Isaiah 43:19
Often, the hardest thing about receiving something new for us is that it almost always requires something new of us. Those new breaker waves we pray and believe for rarely flow through our familiar comfort zone. They don't stay within our boundaries or control, rather, they are the move of His Spirit calling us to jump outside our self-imposed box and ride the wave of a lifetime.
The above verse from Isaiah is quoted frequently, even hung as a banner to declare the new thing God is ready to do. But how often do we leave off that last part? How often do we turn a deaf ear to the question the Spirit asks us each day when He inquires, "Shall you not know it?"
Will we know the new thing God is doing in, through and around us? Will we recognize His fresh move, beyond our insecurities, critiques or judgments? Will we be able to embrace the very thing we've been praying for when it passes by just outside familiar waters?
If we will, it will take courage.

ElijahList Prophetic Resources

It will require us to be lion-hearted, found among those through the ages who have – like Gideon – lived a courage that is not so much about a valiant charge into battle but about a radical step of obedience that joins God in what He is now doing.
Your Messenger of Courage
The Lord doesn't just send us into such a leap out onto the waters without equipping us.
Like with Gideon and Mary, there are different times throughout Scripture where we see the Lord send a messenger to one of His chosen ones to call them over the chasm that lies between the promises they hope for and the purpose they are created to live.
God goes all in to help us be who He has created us to be, and to prove it, He sends us messengers of courage to strengthen our leap.
"Now the Angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth tree...Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress...And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, 'The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!'" Judges 6:11-12
"Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 'Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!'" Luke 1:26-28
Gideon was addressed as "mighty man of valor." Mary as "highly favored one." It is not coincidence that God called them by such terms not after they completed their purpose, but before. This is how they were addressed from the outset; then God called them to step into the appointed time of their destiny.
You have a Messenger of Courage within you, a Helper, the Spirit of Truth, and He is calling to you like He did Gideon and Mary, already addressing you as beloved and a victor, not just hopeful of such.
He wants to visit you, meet you, and call to the courage He already sees within you. He wants you to see yourself as He does, and He is imparting to you the courage necessary to leap out and seize the moment that is only just beyond your reach.
(Photo via Wikimedia Commons)
The Lord has aligned timing. He has aligned circumstances. He is calling you by a powerful name like "Mighty" or "Favored" to remind you who you are in Him, and that He is with you. For when you know who you are, you'll also know what you are supposed to do.
He calls you by your identity before you discover your victory. So, what is your messenger of courage saying over you?
"Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord." Luke 1:45

"Connecting the Dots of Your Purpose" - Joey LeTourneau

"Connecting the Dots of Your Purpose"
Joey LeTourneau, Redding, CA
The Elijah List

"I know the plans I have for you..." Jeremiah 29:11

Growing up, for my 16th birthday, my parents asked if they could give me a "Father's Blessing" for my birthday. I was reluctant while imagining the other things a 16th birthday could bring, but I ended up receiving a gift that has altered my life, family and purpose forever.

One particular line my dad spoke over me really stands out: "I hope you never believe that just because you're not like me in every area of life that I think you're a lesser person; that's a common belief among sons of type-A dads. In fact, I believe the very best hope for the LeTourneau name lies in the very ways that you are different from me."

What a revolutionary statement! As people, and Christians, we can struggle not to judge others or expect them to conform to our ways. We often condemn differences that are actually a big part of God's creative design. We often want people to recognize our way of doing things as the "right way."
But here, in a father-son relationship where such conforming expectations can often be at the greatest heights, my dad was actually blessing my differences, recognizing—and helping me recognize—that it was those very differences in my life that were not like him that would probably make the biggest difference in the world. I tend to think our Heavenly Father sees much the same way. (Photo via flickr)

"There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all." 1 Corinthians 12:4-6

You are going to reach people that I will never reach. You have gifts I can't dream of. You are called to different places, through different ways that I am not. And that's a beautiful thing

But those intentional differences crafted straight from the Father's heart are also why we often struggle to live out our purpose—because it's different than the person on our right, or our left. We too often compare and end up hiding the very light that is supposed to rise up and shine from within us!

Identifiers to Help "Connect the Dots"

Here is a stepping-stone like path of identifiers that can help you recognize different, important parts of your life and how they may fit with other pieces God has given you.

These areas of our lives can look like a big, scattered "connect the dots" puzzle as we try and decide which one to pursue. But start to connect the dots and you just might see the picture He is trying to show the world through you! (Photo via pixabay)

Dream: What do you want to give the world, in a big picture sense? Do you want to give hope? Second chances? Education? Resources? What about new ideas and inventions?

Compassion: Who or what does your heart naturally break for? It might be a cause or subject that always wrenches your heart when you see it in a movie or story. It might be something you or someone close to you has passed through. Is your compassion for orphans or widows? The poor or oppressed? Perhaps broken families, or maybe for those impacted by slavery/trafficking? Your heart has probably already been talking with God about your compassion fairly frequently, we just have to slow down to recognize and identify that it just might be Him speaking to us.

ElijahList Prophetic Resources

Passion: What subjects do you enjoy? What talents or gifts has God given you? Is it art or music? Sports? Media or technology? Maybe business, government or education? When you combine your compassion with your passion, you can begin to see a new way you might be able to reach out to those you have compassion for.

Purpose: How are you going to make an impact? Will you open a facility or start a business? You could teach, coach, or mentor others in a formal or informal way. Might you write or speak, or maybe travel to encourage or deliver resources? You might simply become a professional in your field. And there are so many other ways.

Nations: This part is pretty self-explanatory. Where? What nation, community, culture or neighborhood grabs your heart? Is it your nation/neighborhood? Is it an Asian nation or an African nation? Perhaps it is a European nation or somewhere else. There are so many possibilities and yours is important.

So imagine you start to connect those dots: What if you wanted to give New ideas and inventions to those who are poor, using your passion for business to open a facility in an urban area. Or, what if you wanted to give hope to victims of trafficking in an Asian nation using art as a method of reviving their spirits. (Photo via pixabay)

First Steps

The truth is we aren't just called to dream big dreams; we must have the courage to persevere and live them out. This all starts with taking a first step into what may start out as unknown territory.
Our impact rarely comes from trying to live out some great thing, or build a great ministry. I believe it starts in a very simple way when we stop looking at what we do not have in our hands, and start to look at the pieces of His heart that He has put into ours.

Great faith lived out is often little more than great obedience in the presence of difficulty, opposition or the unknown. Our obedience starts simply by taking those first steps with Him into the "Yes."

Our first steps might be to write out a goal or plan. Maybe start to research more about your compassion. You could even take a vision trip to visit the people or place you are called to—not necessarily to do anything yet—just to ask the Lord what He is doing and how He is calling you to join Him. (Photo via flickr)

Each dot in your life might not bring much clarity on its own, but together they represent something awesome! Whether it's a nation you are drawn to or a compassion that makes your heart well up with hurt and hope at the very same time.

To truly live your purpose don't simply look for the road that goes towards one of these dots as a destination in your life, but get childlike before God and play a good ol' fashion game of connect the dots with your Father. See the picture He has already painted within you, the picture He is trying to reveal through you to the world!

"Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you." Isaiah 60:1

God Says, "It's My Dream Too, Remember" - Joey LeTourneau

God Says, "It's My Dream Too, Remember"
Joey LeTourneau, Redding, CA
The Elijah List

"Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us." Ephesians 3:20

When was the last time you asked God about His dreams? For many of us, it has been a tremendous process just to learn that God invites us to dream with Him. So what do we do when we reach a point when our dreams aren't enough as currently constructed, or are moving forward differently than we expect?

We remember that God dreams too! When God entrusts a dream into our hands, it is an amazing thing. But when we trust Him enough to let go and still put it back in His hands, that's where the "exceedingly and abundantly" we often talk about starts to come to life.

Sacrifice or Multiplication?

...because you have done this thing, and not withheld your son, your only son – blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the Heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore... Genesis 22:16-17

Sometimes we're afraid to surrender the way Abraham did at Mt. Moriah. We're often worried surrender will equal loss; but that's not our Father's nature, He prefers multiplication!

Abraham dreamt of Isaac, and while this was a wonderful start according to the extent of Abraham's vision, God still dreamed of many more "Isaacs" beyond what Abraham could number. When our dreams and God's find their place of conception together, His dreams complete ours to even greater extents as we continue to surrender through the dreaming process. To dream with God, and live those dreams with Him, requires a tension of BOTH ridiculous trust and fearless action. (Photo via Pixabay)

Emphasizing "With"

When we dream with God, "with" becomes far too underrated a word of emphasis. It's easy to focus on the "dreaming," and hopefully on "God" too. But it's the "with" where an unusual power of eternal multiplication is truly birthed – here on earth and in Heaven. If we're not mindful of it, our version of "with" can quickly become dreaming "about" God or "in regards to" or "on behalf of."

Like in most cases of life, we tend to focus on the "end" more than the "means." But it is when we embrace the mysterious tension of "with" that it truly becomes a joint effort, a back and forth at Heaven's white board and earth's canvas; not just dreaming into His possibilities, but allowing Him to dream into ours.

The "with" gives God permission to take His "exceedingly and abundantly" and use it to re-model what we ask or imagine. "With" is a tension that doesn't focus on the answer, but upon the back and forth trust relationship that will bear more answers than we could count. To see our God-dreams become reality in this ripe season ahead, "with" must become our renewed point of emphasis, and an active trust will become our means.

"Foot On the Gas, Hands Off the Wheel"

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

So how do we go forward in this "with" mode? The last couple years God has given me a clear word I continue to move forward by.

As I asked Him how to move forward, He said, "Foot on the gas, hands off the wheel." To me, it's like a child would drive.

They can't press the gas and steer at the same time. They have to choose. God doesn't make us go forward, but He does help us steer. So I have learned to choose to go forward boldly in trust and faith, while yet surrendering the wheel, even and especially when I want to hold on, see, or understand the most. (Photo via Pixabay)

Childlike is one of the most effective revelations of the Kingdom here on earth, as Jesus pointed to in Mark 10:14-15. I believe that's why we must learn to "drive" childlike. It's a powerful position of forward-moving dependence on God, and a position that lets God's dreams lead ours towards His very best.

"It's My Dream Too, Remember"

We were recently in the middle of getting a new resource ready to launch and needed to develop a launch strategy. I love to strategize in all sorts of ways, but this was one of the times God was telling me to take my hands off the wheel and "watch" instead. However, I also did not want to be a poor steward, so I double-checked with God, wanting to make sure He really did want me to let go of this aspect and just leave it with Him for the time being, still ready and willing to do my diligent part.

The next thing I heard from the Lord felt like a playful nudge from a friend, "It's My dream too, remember."

I laughed, nodded, and upon hearing this remembered that truly our current endeavor of a board game that empowers people to dream into their purpose was indeed a combo of my dream starting to be infused by His. I had never set out to create a board game, but I had been dreaming with God for years about empowering people, especially youth around the world, into their purpose. The fact that it came about through a game was very much His idea.

With these joint dream ventures, God is partnering with us and has a very vested interest in seeing them come to life. He wants us to trust Him to fulfill His part too. This requires that we trust Him with both faith and patience.

Joseph has often been known as "the dreamer" with the way he dreamt of what would happen in Israel through his life. And Joseph watched and waited for those dreams to come to reality. All along, God was trying to show him something he didn't expect: "Yes, I'll give you your dream for Israel, but it's part of My much bigger dream for your life. I want to give you Egypt, which will give you the nations, which will also include Israel."(Photo via Pixabay)

Joseph waited for Israel to take notice, but God sent Pharaoh to take notice and be the one who helped launch Joseph's dream instead. God dreams differently than we do, but it's an exceedingly and abundantly kind of different. And, suddenly, our dream might be remodeled or re-routed in a way we never knew possible!

He's given us permission to dream with Him, but do we trust Him enough to give it back and see His dream empower ours? God dreams too – thankfully!

Imagine Nations Changed Because You Lived Your Purpose and Dream! - Joey LeTourneau

Joey LeTourneau:
Joey LeTourneau"Now Joseph had a dream…" Genesis 37:5

We all have a dream! Somewhere inside us there is something that makes our heart burn with passion and burst with joy! It may be an old dream, or it may be fresh. It may be lying dormant waiting to be revived, or it might be on the verge of breathing new life into others.

No matter what stage your dreaming heart is in, it is time to prepare for an awakening of your dreams!

Can They Live?

"And He said to me, 'Son of man, can these bones live?'" Ezekiel 37:3

We stand with the Lord looking upon the dry bones of our dreams that the enemy has tried to steal, kill and destroy. And God asks us, "Can these dreams live?" He is awaiting our answer.

We must not speak out of hope deferred, but rather – we are to speak out into creation that which has already been conceived inside us and that which the Lord is waiting to partner with you to bring to life!

Much more than a word for you, I believe the Father is calling out the word from within you. He is asking you to begin speaking out your dream once more, and living it to His fullest; one step at a time with Him. Come back to the joy you knew before hope was deferred.

Old, dying or dormant dreams are more alive than you think, and you have more within you to live them out than you realize. There is a child inside you who knows not only how to dream, but how to live them in simple trust and belief.

"Talitha, Cumi"

Before we moved from Ethiopia, I had a very intense dream that felt as real on the outside as it was on the inside. The Lord took me into what seemed to be a mausoleum of sorts, where there were six coffins. He took me over to one specific coffin and said, "Stretch out your hand and prophesy life." I was still dreaming, but literally felt and heard my body and voice join the Lord on the outside as well. As I stretched out my hand and spoke, a child rose, sitting straight up.

I believe this child is a key picture for the time at hand. Almost two years later, having let go of that dream, God brought me a word that sparked its possibilities back to life from Mark 5:41-42: "Then He took the child by the hand and said to her, 'Talitha, cumi,' which is translated, 'Little girl, I say to you arise.' Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement."

It is a child such as this that is key to our dreams coming to life and being lived out in the world. To live out the dream inside us and see its Kingdom reality revealed, we must learn to walk with the Father like little children again.

That is how the Israelites crossed the Jordan into their Promise Land, they took one step at a time, living into their dream and promise. The first step came before there was any breakthrough in the waters – they just stepped, and lived it before it was there to be lived. That's what a child would do!

I believe the Father is birthing a youth-filled revival. It's the child inside you, AND the young person next to you.

Both are being raised up for such a time as this. God has so frequently moved through unlikely people and strategies, and is now looking for those "empty vessels" (2 Kings 4) of the world who have room for His best rather than our own perception of such.

It's time to let the childlike faith inside you come to life and strengthen you in speaking forth the dreams of your heart. It's time to find the youth around you and empower them with permission to dream! Together, it's time to dream, again!

Not One Purpose Falling to the Ground

One of my dreams and promises I had put down has been coming back to life, and stronger than ever! It originates from the story of Samuel. Samuel was so young when he became the prophetic voice of his time, even during a time when the voice of the Lord was not being heard. He began to live this purpose with God at such a young age, a child co-laboring with his Father, not because of his qualifications or understanding, but because of his yielded nature – which began with Hannah.

So here we have a prophet of God, speaking on behalf of the Lord from such a young age and yet he had this testimony, "So Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground" (1 Samuel 3:19).

This blows me away! How can someone speak for God for a living and still not have one word fall to the ground? We can speak words so frivolously, and yet, here is someone charged with speaking on behalf of the Lord, beginning as a boy, and still not one word fell to the ground unused. It makes me dream for each of us.
If not one word could fall to the ground between God and Samuel, how much more possible is it for not one purpose from any life to fall to the ground?

Our purpose is so uniquely God-given and specially placed. If not one of Samuel's words fell to the ground, than why should any purpose of any of God's children ever fall to the ground? That's why we must dream!

You have a unique purpose within you that no one else has. You have value simply because of who you are to the Father. His love for you is unconditional, and He believes in you. So do I! He is calling you into your unique and special purpose.

It's time to speak forth the dreams that are in you. It's time to walk with Him with childlike trust, live your dreams rather than the world's version, and see your purpose come to life. I pray not one purpose God has put within you will fall to the ground.

It's time to dream, and we're not talking "pipe dreams" either. We're talking about the real deal, the dreams that will unveil your purpose to those in the world who need it the most.

Imagine nations changed because you lived your purpose and dream! Hope breathes through those who choose to be awakened.

At the time of this writing, I'm 58 years old, and like many "adults" in their late 50s, I've seen my share of dreams "die" or at least appear to die.

But God doesn't think even "a little" like we think. He doesn't look at our age and say, "Oh well, he had a good run. I should get him ready for retirement since he's in his 50s now.

God forbid that He would see things that way.

Instead, God is into "the greatest things being the latest things."
Joey LeTourneau writes in this article:

And God asks us, "Can these dreams live?" He is awaiting our answer. We must not speak out of hope deferred, but rather – we are to speak out into creation that which has already been conceived inside us and that which the Lord is waiting to partner with you to bring to life!

It's time to bring back to life some of your greatest dreams. Because if your life was over, you would not be breathing anymore. And since you are alive, there are dreams that the Lord has chosen to revive in your life!
