We Need a Revival of New Testament Love - J. LEE GRADY

Men's group
What we need these days is a dose of good ol' fashioned New Testament love.

Fire in My Bones, by J. Lee Grady
We who call ourselves Spirit-filled Christians are notorious for overusing the term "revival." If we get a standing-room-only crowd in a church for more than three nights in a row, and those people end up swooning on the floor after the altar call, we start hyping things up and comparing the meetings to the First Great Awakening.
But what exactly are the signs of a genuine move of God? Lately I've been buried in Paul's epistle to the Thessalonians to find the answer to that question. After all, one of the most explosive spiritual awakenings in history took place in the Greek city of Thessalonica. It was a headquarters of ancient paganism (and just three hours from Mount Olympus, the home of the Greek gods), yet when the gospel was preached there it triggered a chain reaction of miracles and mass conversions.
Paul said of the spiritual explosion in Thessalonica: "Our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction" (1 Thess. 1:5a). A riot erupted, Paul was run out of town, and the new Christians were persecuted. Yet the attacks couldn't stop them: The impact of this move of God was so forceful that within a short time the newly converted Thessalonians spread their faith throughout most of Greece (see v. 8).
So we could say that biblical revivals always include: (1) powerful preaching that brings heavy conviction of sin; (2) supernatural miracles that display God's power and confirm the message; (3) notable numbers of true converts who share their faith aggressively; and (4) persecution from those who resist the gospel. But after reading 1 Thessalonians a few more times I noticed one additional hallmark of genuine revival that we often ignore: (5) remarkable, sincere love that nurtures the growing Christian church.
We all want the miracles. We long to see mass conversions. But we forget that New Testament revival doesn't happen without New Testament love. I see this love manifested in some specific ways:
1. Servant-hearted leadership. The apostle Paul and the leaders on his team did not think of themselves as "all that." They weren't pulpit stars. They didn't ride in limousines or demand five-star hotel rooms. Paul was even willing to work a job so he wouldn't be a burden to the Thessalonians. He told them: "Having so fond an affection for you, we were well-pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God but also our very own lives, because you had become very dear to us" (1 Thess. 2:8).
In today's "Spirit-filled" churches, some pastors have morphed into hipster CEOs who appear only in the pulpit and on the video screen. They may bring a powerful message, but the idea of personal impartation has become a relic of a bygone era. In the era of the iChurch, we really can't get on the people's level. That's too bad, because sermons alone don't make disciples. People need a personal touch from leaders who feel deep affection for those they are discipling.
2. Selfless investment. When Paul was in prison, he didn't throw a pity party or feel bad for himself. He was thinking 24/7 about the people he had led to Christ in Thessalonica. He desperately wanted to see them again. They were in his heart. He prayed for them constantly "that we may see your face, and may complete what is lacking in your faith" (3:10). That kind of selfless love, modeled by humble leaders, sets the bar high for the entire church.
3. Slobbering affection. The word "brethren" appears in 1 Thessalonians 17 times. Paul understood that when we join the community of the redeemed, we are bonded together by the Holy Spirit who lives in all of us. That precious spiritual bond should be treasured. That's why Paul wrote: "May the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love for one another" (1 Thess. 3:12). He knew the true measure of Christian maturity is fervent love.
Paul also told the Thessalonians: "Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss" (5:26). Today we explain this verse away by suggesting that kissing was a cultural tradition that doesn't apply to us. Really? I've been in churches where people keep their polite distance, and their lack of affection is an indicator of their icy spiritual condition. Some people criticize what they call "sloppy agapé," but I've learned that when Christians hug and kiss each other, they are also more prone to be passionate followers of Jesus.
Paul cared deeply about his followers and he told them: "We proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children" (2:7). There is a direct connection between extravagant love for each other and the spirit of New Testament revival. Let's rediscover it.

Israel Produces World's Tiniest New Testament

Israel Produces World's Tiniest New Testament

MIGDAL HAEMEK, Israel -- You may have heard about the Lord's Prayer engraved on the head of a pin. Now an Israeli company says it's created the smallest New Testament in the world.
It's called the Nano Bible.
"All 27 books of the New Testament were printed in a less than 5-millimeter square chip," Russell Ellwanger, CEO of Tower Jazz, the semi-conductor foundry manufacturing the chip, told CBN News.
David Almog is one of the creators who came up with the idea for the Nano Bible.
"We know Jerusalem and we thought about this idea of, and a vision, to create something incorporating the Nano technology that already exists in Israel and basically spreading the energy, the vision that we have for what it means to have the Bible close to you," Almog told CBN News.
To enter the sterile environment of the laboratory in northern Israel where the chips are produced, CBN News suited up.
"Within the manufacturing processes at Tower Jazz, we have anywhere from 500 to 900 processing steps," Ellwanger explained. "What is processed is called a silicon substrate, which is any one of these 25 slices in this box. Every one of these boxes goes through its own specific processing flow."
Using cutting-edge technology, they print the mini-Bibles in the original Greek text.
Greek scholar Jack Pastor, who read from the chip with the help of a computer, affirmed the Bible's veracity.
"This is the part where Matthew is going through the genealogy of both the Jews and of Christ," Pastor said. "There's no question that this is the text of the New Testament."
"We have about over 1,000 books on this 8-inch silicon wafer," Ellwanger said.
The tiny chips are currently made into pendants, and in the future, they'll be crafted into other jewelry.
"We think that something like that can have such a positive impact on people's lives wherever they live," Almog said.
"I think that for people who are believers in the New Testament, it gives a very nice reminder that can be worn as cuff links, can be worn as a pendant around one's neck, of the values one, if they are a believer, should be adhering to," Ellwanger added.
Jerusalem Nano Bible submitted the tiny scriptures to the Guinness Book of World Records. They believe they'll soon hold the record for the tiniest New Testament in the world.

Does New Testament Back Israel's Claim to the Land?

Does New Testament Back Israel's Claim to the Land?

Sunday, January 04, 2015 |  Israel Today Staff
Pastor Ron Cantor of the Tel Aviv-based Messianic congregation Tiferet Yeshua addresses in the following video the oft-heard argument that nowhere in the New Testament is Israel’s modern claim to to this land reaffirmed.
Even among Christians who on the surface claim to reject Replacement Theology, many insist that God’s promise of this particular piece of land to the Children of Israel and their descendants as a perpetual inheritance is null and void under the new covenant sealed in Yeshua’s blood.
Cantor starts off by noting that the New Testament never reaffirms the concept of tithing, but nearly all Christian pastors and ministers hold that it is still a valid and even necessary practice. As such, the mere absence of a particular promise or concept from the pages of the New Testament is not enough to declare it invalid.
“Can God, who cannot lie, break His promise?” Cantor wonders. “I would think not. If so, our faith is on shaky ground.”
Even so, Cantor explores why the New Testament fails to mention God’s promise of the land to Israel, which was such a central theme during the centuries covered by the Old Testament.
Or does it? As Cantor explains, a number of passages traditionally misused and taken out of context in fact reaffirm all of God’s promises to the Jews, including those regarding the land.
This short teaching is worth a watch: Israel Today video

Messianic Guest House Loses Appeal to Lesbians

Messianic Guest House Loses Appeal to Lesbians

Thursday, December 04, 2014 |  David Lazarus  ISRAEL TODAY
A Jerusalem District Court has rejected the appeal of the Messianic village of Yad Hashmonah and has ordered it to pay compensation to the tune of USD $15,000 to two lesbians for refusing to allow a wedding reception on its premises.
Judge Moshe Hacohen upheld the previous ruling that since the Yad Hashmonah Messianic Guest House is a open to the public, the community cannot impose its religious faith on individuals or groups who want to use its facilities.
“There were no contradictions in this case,” said Hacohen. “Yad Hashmonah refused to allow the wedding reception because the women are lesbians. In their appeal, the village claims that they have authority to refuse the reception because of their faith. Most of the members of the village are Messianic Jews, who base their faith on elements of Judaism and Evangelical Christianity, a faith based on the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament as the word of God.”
In its appeal, Yad Hashmonah explained that “the lifestyle of these lesbians is in absolute contradiction to the Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament. The laws regulating freedom of religion must protect us from allowing a ceremony in our backyard which is in complete contradiction to our faith.”
However, the Jerusalem Court determined that the refusal by Yad Hashmonah to allow the lesbian celebration is against the law, which states that “it is forbidden to act in a way that discriminates against persons for services rendered or entrance to public places.” The judge pointed out that the village’s Messianic meeting room is completely separate from the guest house, which is a secular tourist business.
Yad Hashmonah’s lawyers, Michael Decker and Sarah Weinberg, argued that it was the village’s legitimate right to refuse the lesbian celebration given its members’ beliefs in the Bible and their faith, which prohibits same-sex marriages. The lawyers explained that the Messianic believers hold dearly the importance of traditional marriage between and a man and a woman.
The court agreed that the residents of Yad Hashmonah had every right to practice their faith. However, since they are running a regular secular business, they are required to adhere to the law which prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion or sexual preferences. If Yad Hashmonah wants to open its business to the general public, the judge ruled, then they must be willing to provide services even to persons or groups who are not to their liking or taste.
There are many guest houses and businesses in Israel that are owned and operated by Messianic or Christian organizations. The ruling comes as a warning to all faith-based establishments in Israel that they cannot refuse use of their facilities once they have opened them up to the public.

Messianic Video Series Answers Rabbis' Objections to Jesus

Messianic Video Series Answers Rabbis' Objections to Jesus

Tuesday, December 02, 2014 |  Israel Today Staff
What started as a brief set of video responses to anti-Messianic activists in Israel (see below) has blossomed into a new online initiative featuring no fewer than 52 short clips answering the most pressing rabbinical objections to Yeshua (Jesus).
A new Hebrew-language website (messiah.co.il) presents the videos produced by local Messianic media professionals Eitan Bar and Moti Vaknin of the Internet-based ministry “One for Israel.”
The videos and website are “our most advanced production so far, and perhaps the most advanced in Jewish Evangelism until today,” wrote Bar. “In these videos we expose how the Rabbis have been keeping Jesus a secret from Israel for over 2,000 years. We even quote ancient Jewish sources showing that the Old Testament prophecies we refer people to were interpreted in the past just as we interpret them today - as being about the Messiah!”
Israel Today has written before about One for Israel, which is taking a fresh approach to evangelism in the Jewish state. Israeli society is one of the most “online” in the world, and recent statistics showed that every month 18,000 Israelis search Google for the term “redemption,” and over 22,000 search for “Yeshua.”
Some of the topics addressed in the new video series include:
  • Why do the rabbis really reject Jesus?
  • Can you be Jewish and believe in Jesus?
  • Is the Messiah supposed to rule like King David or suffer like Joseph?
  • Is the Messiah an incarnation of God in flesh and blood?
  • Is the New Testament Anti-Semitic?
  • Son of God: a pagan concept, or a Biblical one?
  • Does the New Testament claim that Israel have been rejected or replaced?
Below are the two original videos published by Eitan and Moti with English subtitles:

Anti-Missionaries Warn Against New Testament Audio Player

Anti-Missionaries Warn Against New Testament Audio Player

Monday, November 17, 2014 |  Ryan Jones  ISRAEL TODAY
Ultra-Orthodox Jewish anti-missionary group Yad L’Achim has published an urgent video to social media sites warning against a “dangerous Christian missionary audio player” currently being distributed in Israel.
Produced by MegaVoice, the pocket-sized audio player known as “Envoy” has access to a library of over 10,000 messages, as well as the New Testament, all of which is available in over 4,600 languages and dialects.
According to Yad L’Achim, a version of the device including a Hebrew-language recording of the New Testament is currently being distributed to Israeli soldiers.
Darrel Templeton, vice president of strategic partnerships for MegaVoice, told Israel Today that this negative exposure is likely to be a blessing in disguise.
“What they meant for evil, God can use for good,” said Templeton, recalling a hidden-camera reality show that featured “people just walking past a park bench. Then they put a sign on the bench that read, ‘Wet Paint - Do NOT touch.’ Well, you can imagine what happened. Many would slow down and look at the bench, and some would stick their finger out to see if the paint was still wet.”
In the same way, Templeton believes that Yad L’Achim’s urgent warning will draw in those who are curious, and create curiosity where it might not have existed.
“Where many would have just walked on past and not noticed the MegaVoice unit, now they will be curious, pick it up and begin listening. And those that were looking for the truth will now know what to look for,” he said.
Templeton confirmed that MegaVoice is distributing the audio players to Israeli soldiers, and praying for additional funding so that every soldier might receive an Envoy “loaded with hundreds of hours of interesting music, stories, testimonies, debates, audio books and God’s Word that they could listen to during the hours and hours of waiting, so they can hear and understand the Truth.”

Perry Stone: A Revelation of Your God Gear

PowerUp!

Perry Stone: A Revelation of Your God Gear
Armor of God
In the New Testament-era time of Christ and the apostles, the spiritual teachers used practical, everyday persons, places, objects and real-life examples to help their listeners and readers understand and visualize spiritual truths and concepts.
A few common examples used through the New Testament are:
  • Farming—illustrations of farming such as planting, protecting and harvesting grains and fruits (Matt. 13:18-32).
  • Fishing—catching men, mending nets, and dealing with storms (Matt. 4:18-20; 13:47-50).
  • Running—a foot race, winning the prize, not giving up, and laying aside weights and sins (Heb. 12:1-2).
  • Warring—a soldier who is equipped with armor to fight and defeat enemies (Eph. 6:10-20).
Perhaps you enjoy those promises of reaping and sowing and prefer to remain in the farming scriptures. For those who like athletic activities, you can relate to the run-the-race admonition in Heb. 12:1-2 because you desire to win the prize. However, if you are an active Christian, you are to be continually prepared for a surprise spiritual conflict that attacks your health, wealth or family—similar to the assault the enemy leveled against Job (see Job 1-2).
We must all understand that this conflict is the battle of the ages, and each soul that falls in battle, wounded and unable to stand, is a victory in the kingdom of darkness.
Anyone who is a Christian is also a soldier. After ministering to hundreds of thousands of believers, I have observed four basic types of soldiers in the body of Christ:
1. First there are those who know nothing about the armor of God. They live from one battle to the next, survive from one beating to the next, and anticipate one defeat to the next. They are the ones who have a desire to serve God but their conflicts bring a defeatist mentality, as they are uncertain as to how to win in a conflict.
2. The second category is those who know something about the armor but refuse to wear it. To them Eph. 6:13-18 is a beautiful poetic passage penned by the apostle in prison. However, their belief is that we must all learn how to deal with our own problems in our own wisdom and strength and not overly concern ourselves with some form of invisible spiritual warfare.
3. The third category comprises the soldiers who pick and choose their protection, wearing some but not all of the armor. They enjoy a spiritual victory occasionally, answered prayer from time to time, a healing during certain seasons, but they often leave areas of their lives exposed to the darts of the enemy. They may attend church for many years, but suddenly they drop off the radar and no one sees them in the Sunday services because the enemy hit them in an unprotected moment.
4. The fourth category of Christian warrior is those believers who wear the entire armor of God and actually know what it represents and how to use it. These Christians have battles just as everyone else, but despite battles and wars, they continue to survive and even thrive during raging conflicts.
It is interesting that Paul would write a detailed discourse on the spiritual battle of a believer against demonic rebels to the Ephesian believers. The city was known for its prostitutions (including temple prostitutes), public bathhouses and idol worship, which dominated the city. Crowds of more than 10,000 people often filled the stadium for gladiator fights.
This was the setting Paul had observed when reminding the saints that their battle was not with flesh and blood but against satanic spirits ruling in high places (Eph. 6:12). This God gear is invisible to the natural eye, yet it is activated through our knowledge of the Word and our faith and trust in God's promises.
You may not see the armor with your natural eyes, just as Job did not see a "hedge" around him with his natural eyes (Job 10:10), but the adversary knows if you are fully clothed or partially naked, and he knows if you truly believe or if you are going to "fake it till you make it."
As a soldier, you would never go to war without proper training, weapons and protective gear. The Bible is our training guide; our life experiences and spiritual walk become our boot camp; and the temptations, trials and attacks we face are all a part of the warfare. As a Christian engaged in spiritual conflicts, you must never leave home without your mind and heart covered and fully clothed with the warfare gear. Paul said, "Put on the whole armor" (Eph. 6:11). The armor of God—never leave home without it!

Prayer Power for the Week of 9/8/2014
This week determine to put on the whole armor of God on a daily basis. Then take your position to stand in faith against all the wiles of the devil. Your prelude to any battle is praise, so begin your prayer time with praise. Exalt God and declare Him worthy of praise and victorious in your life. As this school year begins around the country, lift up our children, youth and young adults.
Pray for godly instructors to teach and direct them in the ways of integrity. Ask God to protect all those doing His work in educational institutions, as well as our local, state and national leaders. Continue to pray for revival to break out in our churches, communities and across the nation. Pray concerning Israel, the conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and the Ukraine (Eph. 6:11-18).
