1700-Year-Old Gravestones of Unknown Rabbis Uncovered in Northern Israel

“Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast the understanding.” (Job 38:4)
Three ancient gravestone epitaphs written in Aramaic and in Greek were recently uncovered in the Galilee region in northern Israel. The people commemorated in two of the inscriptions are described as rabbis, but their exact names and identities have yet to be identified by further research.
The two epitaphs end with the Hebrew greeting word “shalom” (meaning ‘hello’ or ‘peace’). The Greek inscription mentions the name “Jose”, which at the time had been a very common name among Jews in Israel and in the diaspora.
The gravestones were buried in the western part of the cemetery of the Jewish community of Zippori in the Lower Galilee region, which was a major Jewish city in ancient times. The information that ultimately led to the discovery originally came from residents of the community.
The excavation was conducted by researchers from the Kinneret Institute for Galilean Archaeology in Kinneret College, and from the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA).

“One of the surprises in the newly uncovered inscriptions is that one of the people buried is nicknamed as ‘The Tiberian’,” said Dr. Motti Aviam from the Kinneret College. “This is the second case of a person from Tiberias buried in the Zippori cemetery. Perhaps Jews from all around the Galilee chose to be buried in Zippori due to Judah the Prince’s important activities in the city.”
Judah the Prince, nicknamed simply ‘Rabbi’, was the chief redactor of the Jewish Mishnah (the first major work of Rabbinic literature) and he lived in Zippori during the Roman occupation. Zippori was the first capital of the Galilee region in Hasmonean times, until Tiberias was founded in the first century CE.
The city was a bustling Jewish center as indicated by the many artifacts discovered in the city, including Jewish ritual baths (mikveh) and 17 epitaphs, mostly in Aramaic which had been the spoken language among Jews at the time. Some of them also spoke and wrote in Greek.
“The significance of the gravestones lies in the fact they reflect the daily life of Jews in Zippori and their culture 1,700 years ago,” said Dr. Aviam.

“One of the inscriptions features the Hebrew word ‘leolam’ (meaning ‘forever’), for the first time in Zippori,” he added. “The word is known from epitaphs in other locations, and means in this context that their burial place shall remain his forever, without anyone robbing it from them.”
The inscriptions will be researched further, and the researchers believe that more research will likely produce new discoveries. The IAA and the Kinneret College also stated that the gravestones will be on display for the general public.

Torah Scroll Being Written to Present to Messiah Upon His Arrival By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz - BREAKING ISRAEL NEWS

Torah Scroll Being Written to Present to Messiah Upon His Arrival

“Now it will come about that In the last days the mountain of the house of the Lord will be established as the chief of the mountains, And will be raised above the hills; And all the nations will stream to it. And many peoples will come and say, ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the lord, To the house of the God of Jacob; That He may teach us concerning His ways And that we may walk in His paths.’ For the Torah will go forth from Zion And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” (Isaiah 2:2-3)
Rabbi Yosef Berger, one of the rabbis in charge of King David’s Tomb in Jerusalem’s Old City, has been dreaming of a project for over a year – one Torah scroll to unify all of Israel.
Recent global events have forced Rabbi Berger to move ahead quickly with his dream as he wants to be able to personally present this Torah as a gift to the Messiah. Many prominent rabbis and Kabbalists have told Rabbi Berger that may be very soon indeed.
The inspiration for the project came from the Book of Hosea (3:4-5), in which it is written:
“For the sons of Israel will remain for many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar and without ephod (a sleeveless garment worn by Jewish priests) or household idols. Afterward the sons of Israel will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king; and they will come trembling to the Lord and to His goodness in the last days (before Messiah).”
Rabbi Berger explained to Breaking Israel News what this prophecy had a personal meaning for him.
“In the end of days, when Israel realizes that all hope is lost and they have no solution or salvation from their plight, the people of Israel will be wise enough to seek the three things which our ancestors despised: the Kingdom of Heaven, the Kingdom of David, and the building of the Temple,” he said.
“It is taught in the Yalkut Shimoni (a collection believed to have been arranged in the 13th century) Samuel 1: 106, ‘Rabbi Shimon Ben Monsia said, “No signs of redemption will be shown to Israel until they seek these three things – the kingdom of heaven , the dynasty of King David, and the building of the Temple.”’”
Rabbi Berger believes that by bringing all of Israel together in the writing of a single Torah scroll housed on Mount Zion, where King David is interred, and adjacent to the Temple mount, he will accomplish all three goals in one action.

Rabbi David Hai Abuhatzeira was honored with writing the first letter of the Torah. Rabbi Abuhatzeira is the grandson of the prominent Moroccan Sephardic mystic Rabbi Israel Abuhatzeira, known as the Baba Sali, renowned for his ability to work miracles through his prayers.
For Kabbalistic reasons which he refused to reveal, Rabbi Abuhatzeira chose to write the Hebrew letter ‘yud’, rather than the first letter, which is a ‘bet’. Rabbi Abuhatzeira urgently instructed the organizers of the project, “Write the Sefer Torah as fast as possible, you don’t have much time!…I hope you have a chance (to finish)!”
“The Messiah will also take part in the process,” Rabbi Abuhatzeira explained. “The nation of Israel will give him this Torah as a gift, as it is written “Whither kings shall bring presents unto Thee” (Psalms 68:29) and “Bring presents unto Him that is to be feared” (Psalms 76:11).”

According to Rabbi Berger, Rabbi Abuhatzeira added that the combined numerologies of the phrases “This year we will merit seeing him” (השנה נזכה לראות אותו) and “The arrival of the Messiah” (ביאת המשי), add up to 5776, the current year according to the Jewish calendar.
Hundreds of letters have already been written in the Torah scroll. Jewish tradition teaches that a Torah scroll contains 600,000 letters, equal to the number of Jews who received the Torah at Mount Sinai.  However, the actual number of letters in a Torah is 304,805, leaving many more opportunities for people to be included in the Klal Yisrael project.
Rabbi Berger realizes that preparing a gift for the Messiah is not a normal type of charity, and his expectations are unique. “Even if someone gives me a million dollars to write many Torahs, it isn’t what I want. I want all of Israel individually to have a part in this Torah,” he explained to Breaking Israel News.
When the Torah is completed, Rabbi Berger plans on having a parade through Jerusalem to dedicate it. The parade will go through every corner of the city in order to include as many people as possible and will finish at the Tomb of King David, where the Torah scroll will be kept.
“We want it to be such a wonderful event that all of Israel will be praising God and asking for him to come and redeem us.”

The Gospel Is Still to the Jew First! - Dr. Michael Brown

Dr. Michael Brown
The Gospel Is Still to the
Jew First!

Dear Friends,

When Paul wrote in Romans 1:16 that the gospel was to the Jew first, he didn’t just mean historically. He meant in terms of divine priority – and that priority remains until this very day.

Unfortunately, reaching Jewish people with the gospel is not a priority for many churches and ministries, despite the clear teaching of the New Testament. In fact, in Romans 11, Paul went as far to say that Israel’s salvation would be life from the dead for the whole world. It doesn’t get much more important than that!

Others have a sincere desire to share the good news of the Messiah but don’t know where to start.

I can help you fulfill that divine mandate – “to the Jew first” – and together, we can see Jewish men and women in America, in Israel, and around the world meet their Messiah for the very first time.

By God’s grace, I am on the front lines of Jewish evangelism, equipping believers to reach our people, calling the Church to pray for Israel, and engaging directly in Jewish evangelism.

·        My national radio broadcast, The Line of Fire, devotes one day every week to Israel. It’s called “Thoroughly Jewish Thursday,” and we often get calls from religious Jews who do not yet believe in Yeshua. Only the Lord knows how many are listening!

·        My apologetics materials are being used in Hebrew on Israeli websites devoted to Jewish outreach, and the response so far has been terrific.

·        We have a new Jewish staff member who is fluent in Hebrew, Russian, and English, and as soon as we have adequate funding, we will begin live outreach chats in these three languages, which represent the vast majority of Jews worldwide.

·        We are producing cutting edge videos that expose media bias against Israel – we regularly receive “thank-yous” from Israelis who appreciate this work – and I’m able to write articles on a regular basis that tell the truth about Israel, the Jewish people, and the Middle East conflict.

·        We are developing special teaching videos that open up fascinating Jewish background to New Testament truths, like this new video on Jewish tradition and the cross.

·        We are the only ministry in history to air a 32-week teaching series on national TV on Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus.

·        Our Jewish-related resources, including 8 books and numerous debates and lectures, are distributed around the world, bringing a steady stream of fruit to the glory of God.

One man recently posted a note on YouTube, expressing his gratitude for these materials, explaining that he once fell away from the faith because of the arguments of the counter-missionary rabbis and it was through my books and videos that he came back to Yeshua and has been strong ever since. Praise God!

Would you help me multiply stories like this by the hundreds? Your year-end, tax-deductible gift of $1,000, $500, $250, $100, $50, or $25 will help us take the gospel “to the Jew first,” and you will have the joy of knowing that you are playing an important role in something very dear to the heart of the Father.

To stand with us today, click here – and thank you, from my heart, for your solidarity and support.

May this be the time of Israel’s salvation!

Blessings,

Dr. Michael L. Brown

P.S. When I see how much money is spent on political campaigns, knowing that, in the end, only one candidate will get in, I’m reminded all the more of the importance of putting spiritual work first. Thanks once more for partnering with us!

Messianic Video Series Answers Rabbis' Objections to Jesus

Messianic Video Series Answers Rabbis' Objections to Jesus

Tuesday, December 02, 2014 |  Israel Today Staff
What started as a brief set of video responses to anti-Messianic activists in Israel (see below) has blossomed into a new online initiative featuring no fewer than 52 short clips answering the most pressing rabbinical objections to Yeshua (Jesus).
A new Hebrew-language website (messiah.co.il) presents the videos produced by local Messianic media professionals Eitan Bar and Moti Vaknin of the Internet-based ministry “One for Israel.”
The videos and website are “our most advanced production so far, and perhaps the most advanced in Jewish Evangelism until today,” wrote Bar. “In these videos we expose how the Rabbis have been keeping Jesus a secret from Israel for over 2,000 years. We even quote ancient Jewish sources showing that the Old Testament prophecies we refer people to were interpreted in the past just as we interpret them today - as being about the Messiah!”
Israel Today has written before about One for Israel, which is taking a fresh approach to evangelism in the Jewish state. Israeli society is one of the most “online” in the world, and recent statistics showed that every month 18,000 Israelis search Google for the term “redemption,” and over 22,000 search for “Yeshua.”
Some of the topics addressed in the new video series include:
  • Why do the rabbis really reject Jesus?
  • Can you be Jewish and believe in Jesus?
  • Is the Messiah supposed to rule like King David or suffer like Joseph?
  • Is the Messiah an incarnation of God in flesh and blood?
  • Is the New Testament Anti-Semitic?
  • Son of God: a pagan concept, or a Biblical one?
  • Does the New Testament claim that Israel have been rejected or replaced?
Below are the two original videos published by Eitan and Moti with English subtitles:

Obama and the Rabbis

Obama and the Rabbis

Thursday, September 18, 2014 |  Tsvi Sadan  ISRAEL TODAY
Jews are naturally interested in Barack Obama's policy in the Middle East, and not a few rabbis are using telltale signs in American leader’s expressions of religion and moral values to draw somewhat far-fetched conclusions regarding the spiritual nature of his presidency.
Since Obama's election, Rabbi Amnon Yitzhak, the most popular Orthodox Jewish "evangelist" in Israel, has been among those teaching that he is the representation of "Tidal," the "king of nations" mentioned in Genesis 14:1.
Being the forty-fourth president of the United States, Obama’s presidency will be characterized by bloodshed, because in gematria – where Hebrew letters can take numeric value and vice versa – 44 makes the word for blood.
Rabbi Yitzhak also views Obama as a Christian Muslim, and as such a representation of both Edom (a euphemism for Christianity) and Ishmael (Islam), Israel's two arch enemies. Obama's presidency therefore will be characterized by dangerous anti-Israel policy that has the potential to bring about Israel's destruction.
This danger, says Rabbi Yitzhak, can be averted by the repentance of individual Jews. In other words, Israel's wellbeing depends not on the IDF, but on proper Jewish response to God.
Rabbi Yoel Schwartz, another respected figure in certain religious circles, claims that the summer’s Gaza war has initiated the great war of Gog and Magog with nations gathering against Israel prior to the coming of Messiah. The reason for this war, he says, has everything to do with homosexuality, and particularly the annual gay and lesbian parade in Jerusalem, which was postponed this year because of the Gaza conflagration.
President Obama enters this scheme by being the first American president to openly supported gay and lesbian marriage.
According to Jewish understanding, incest was the cause of the Flood and incest will be the cause for the last apocalyptic war of Gog and Magog.
Like Rabbi Yitzhak, Rabbi Schwartz uses esoteric interpretation methods to draw his conclusion that the world is coming to its end. An example is the appearance of the name "Obama" in Ezekiel 38:2, where, in Hebrew, counting seven letters from the last letter of the word "prince" makes the word "Obama." Be that as it may, Rabbi Schwartz still says that Israel bears heavy responsibility for the impending global doom, and therefore must undergo a deep and thorough searching of her soul.
There are other rabbis and small time "prophets" who likewise use a "biblical code" system to find names, places, events and even specific dates that supposedly reveal Obama's most secret intents.
Intriguing and captivating as it may be, however, relying on such methods for the understanding of current affairs has proved erroneous too many times in the past. Having said that, however, this phenomenon demonstrates that many rabbis harbor a deep and unusual distrust of Obama.

VIDEO: Israeli Messianics Respond to Anti-Missionary Group

VIDEO: Israeli Messianics Respond to Anti-Missionary Group

Thursday, April 17, 2014 |  Israel Today Staff
A couple of months ago, the virulently anti-missionary group Yad L’Achim began publishing a new glossy magazine targeting Israel’s Messianic community. Believers across the country were surprised to find the first issues of “The Seekers” delivered to their private mail boxes.
The magazine sought to paint the Messianic community as a den of unrighteousness based upon belief in a false messiah, with the apparent hope that some from within the Messianic community would come running to Yad L’Achim in search of a way out.
In the aftermath of this bizarre phenomenon, the Israeli Internet evangelism movement One For Israel began producing humorous video responses to various of the Yad L’Achim claims against the Messianic faith and movement.
The videos have been a huge hit on the Israeli Messianic scene, and have no doubt been viewed by many non-believing Israelis, as well.
One For Israel has now added English subtitles to the first two videos in this series. The videos are well worth a watch for believers abroad to see how local Messianics respond to those challenging their faith, especially within a Jewish context.
