Messianic Jews Help Christians Understand Shabbat

Messianic Jews Help Christians Understand Shabbat

Friday, June 19, 2015 |  Israel Today Staff
For Christians gaining an awareness of the Hebraic foundations of their faith, there’s a lot of new and exciting elements to incorporate. Sabbath, or Shabbat, is not just another one of those elements. It is, in fact, a core tenet of the biblical religion.
After all, Shabbat was important enough to warrant a place in the 10 Commandments, forgotten though as it often is amongst that august list of moral stipulations.
A new Messianic endeavor based in Jerusalem is looking to help Christians plug in to the beauty and spiritual significance of Shabbat. The Sabbat Experience invites small groups of Christians to partake in a traditional Jewish Sabbath meal from the perspective of local believers in Yeshua (Jesus).
“We strive to bring our guests through a traditional experience that a typical Jewish family would encounter on any given Friday evening,” reads their website. “The Friday evening Sabbath Experience (Erev Shabbat) is so much more than a religious experience. It is more of an event where everyone is involved and participating.”
More information can be found at The Sabbath Experience

Amazing 1927 Smith Wigglesworth Message

Amazing 1927 Smith Wigglesworth Message

Cross
Smith Wigglesworth delivered this powerful message nearly a century ago! (Flickr/Creative Commons)
On August 11, 1927, Smith Wigglesworth stood in Angelus Temple to preach on preparing for the Second Coming of Christ. He told the audience that liquid fire was consuming him. Then Wigglesworth made this opening statement:
But there will be things that will happen prior to His coming that we shall know. You can tell. I am like one this morning that is moving with a liquid, holy, indispensable, real fire in my bosom, and I know it is burning and the body is not consumed. It is real fire from heaven that is making my utterances come to you to know that He is coming. He is on the way. God is going to help me tell you why you will know. You that have the breath of the Spirit, there is something now moving as I speak. As I speak, this breath of mighty, quickening, moving, changing, desirable power is making you know and it is this alone that is making you know that you will be ready.
1. There must be special preparation for the return of Christ and at least half of all believers will be totally unprepared. We have to see that these days have to come before the Lord can come. There has to be a falling away. I want to speak to you very exactly. All the people which are pressing into and getting ready for this glorious attained place where they shall not be found naked, where they shall be blameless, where they shall be immovable, where they shall be purified by the power of the Word of God, have within them a consciousness of the very presence of God within, changing their very nature and preparing them for a greater thing, and causing them to be ready for translation.
This is the day of purifying. This is the day of holiness. This is the day of separation. This is the day of waking. O God, let us wake today! Let the inner spirit wake into consciousness that God is calling us. There are in the world two classes of believers. There are believers which are disobedient, or I ought to say there are children which are saved by the power of God which are disobedient children. And there are children which are just the same saved by the power of God who all the time are longing to be more obedient.
And we heard the word come rushing, through all over, "new theology" that damnable, devilish, evil power that lived in some of these disobedient children, which in these last days opened the door to the next thing.
2. There will be many Christians who believe that they can do whatever they want and God will look the other way. People are tremendously afraid of this position because they have heard so much on this line: "Oh, you know you are the elect of God. You are sure to be all right." There have been in England great churches which were laid out upon these things. I thank God that they're all withered. You will find if you go to England those strong people that used to hold all these things are almost withered out. Why? Because they went on to say whatever you did, if you were elect, you were right. That is wrong. The elect of God are those that are pressing forward.
3. It will be common for preachers to deny the existence of hell. Denying hell prepares the way for antichrist. What? No hell. The devil has always said that "what does Christian Science say?" [Ray says, "We could insert other names here for the times we're in right now.] No hell, no devil. They are ready for him. The devil has always said no hell, no evil. And these people are preparing, and they do not know it, for the Man of Sin.
4. It is offensive to talk about the blood of Christ. When I spoke about the blood and when I spoke about this infernal thing, the whole place was upset. You be careful when anybody comes to you with a sugar-coated pill or with a slimy tongue. They are always of the devil. The Spirit of the Lord will always deal with truth. These people never deal with truth. They always cover up the truth.
Do you believe it? Who can do it? THE BLOOD CAN DO IT! The blood, the blood, Oh the blood! The blood of the Lamb. The blood of Jesus can do it. Spotless, clean, preserved for God. Give the devil the biggest chase of his life and say these words: "The blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, cleanseth us from all unrighteousness."
5. The world will look to worship a man and will overlook his faults to get him into power. These people are determined to have a man. They know someone has to come. We know Who He is that is coming. They begin to make a man. So they find a man in India, they polish him up as much as they can, and they make him as—well, in appearance, but you know we are told by the Lord that there is soft clothing that goes onto wolves' backs.
6. That people believe that certain preachers are of God simply because of their crowds and their buildings. A person said to me, "You see, the Christian Scientists must be right—look at the beautiful buildings. Look at all the people following them." Yes, everybody can belong to it. You can go to any brother you like, you can go to any theater you like, you can go to any race course you like, you can be mixed up with the rest of the people in your life and still be a Christian Scientist. You can have the devil right and left and anywhere, and still belong to Christian Science.
7. As Churches turn away from the Holy Spirit many believers go to false teachers. The secret of many people going into Christian Science is a barren church that had not the Holy Ghost. Christian Science exists because the churches have a barren place because they haven't the Holy Ghost. There would be no room for Christian Science if the churches were filled with the Holy Ghost.
8. The last days are a time for the true people of God to engage in extravagant asking. Up to this present time, the Lord's word is for us, "Hitherto ye have asked nothing." Surely you people that have been asking great things from God for a long time would be amazed if you entered into it with clear knowledge that it is the Master, it is Jesus, who has such knowledge of the mightiness of the power of the Father, of the joint union with Him, that nothing is impossible for you to ask. Surely it is He only Who could say, "Hitherto you have asked nothing." So God means me to press you another step forward. Begin to believe on extravagant asking, believing that God is pleased when you ask large things.

Stephen Curry: I Knew God Was Preparing Me for a Bigger Stage to Be a Witness for Him

Stephen Curry: I Knew God Was Preparing Me for a Bigger Stage to Be a Witness for Him

Join us on our new podcast each weekday for an interesting story, well told, from Charisma News. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com.

Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors captured their first NBA title since 1975 last night in a 105-97 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Curry and Andre Iguodala, the Finals' MVP who called the Warriors a "team of believers" in post-game interviews, teamed up for 50 points, while the Cavs' LeBron James added 32.
Even after the greatest achievement in basketball, Curry knows there's a much bigger prize in life, long after the buzzer sounds.
In 2013, Curry talked to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for the March issue of its bi-monthly magazine, writing that his faith identifies him more than his jersey.
"Congratulations to Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors on an incredible season and an amazing playoff run—and to LeBron James and the Cavaliers for a stellar season as well," said FCA President and CEO Les Steckel. "We are so elated for Steph and his commitment to his team, his fans, his family and his Savior. Steph gave God all the glory last night. He is a wonderful role model to young athletes, who we hope will learn that when God is in charge of their life, they're always undefeated because God never loses."
Curry told FCA about the moment he began living for Jesus—and never looked back: "I remember it like it was yesterday, the day I gave my life to Christ. I was in fourth grade, and I recall hearing and understanding the gospel of Jesus Christ and walking down the aisle to give my life to Him. My parents continued to pour into my faith from that point on, making sure I understood the commitment I'd just made."
And of his journey to the NBA, he said, "I knew the Lord was preparing me for a bigger stage to represent and be a witness for Him on the basketball court. I remembered my mom telling me from day one at Davidson (College) that God puts His people in different areas of life so that they can reach more people for Him. I tried to use that time for His glory.
"God's given me talents to play basketball for a living, but I still have to work hard to improve every day. I know that in the grand scheme of things, this is just a game that can be taken from me at any moment. But I love that basketball gives me the opportunities to do good things for people and to point them towards the Man who died for our sins on the cross. I know I have a place in heaven waiting for me because of Him, and that's something no earthly prize or trophy could ever top.
"There's more to me than just this jersey I wear, and that's Christ living inside of me."
Steckel added that FCA's mission is to reach coaches and athletes for Christ—one heart at a time.
"Whether youth, junior school, high school, college or professional, athletes have a platform like few others to share their faith," Steckel added. "We are thrilled that Steph is using the platform he has been given not for his own glory but for the glory of God."

Bellwether? Why This Tiny Synagogue Should Concern You

Bellwether? Why This Tiny Synagogue Should Concern You

DALLAS -- For thousands of years, believers have gathered to pray and worship in private homes. In America, it's been a protected right -- at least until lately.

For instance, in Dallas the city government is attacking a small home-based synagogue so hard, it might kill it off.

Dallas first demanded that Congregation Toras Chaim -- a group that meets in a home in the Highlands of McKamy neighborhood of Far North Dallas -- get a city-issued certificate of occupancy to operate. When they didn't, the city sued.

The congregation has been trying to comply, but says the costs of what the city is demanding in renovations is simply too high.

"It's about $200,000 in changes for the 20 families who are members in the synagogue. We could never afford it," Rabbi Yaakov Rich told CBN News. "It would mean shutting down the synagogue and forcing everybody, literally, to sell their homes and to move somewhere else."

That's because they all have to be close enough to walk.

"You see, in Orthodox Judaism, we are not allowed to drive on the Sabbath," Rich explained. "And so if the synagogue couldn't be within walking distance, then everybody would have to relocate to where the synagogue was."

Members feel singled out since as far as they're concerned, they're just a small group of religious believers meeting privately in a home, no different than the small groups or home groups that thousands of Christian churches have all over the country.

National Implications

The pressure goes beyond the government. Liberty Institute lawyer Justin Butterfield has been lead counsel in the synagogue's legal dealings.

"Since the city brought their lawsuit, there's been vandalism," he said. "There've been swastikas painted - one on the rabbi's car, on fences around the area. And it's really created just a hostile environment."

Butterfield warned that the city's duel with Toras Chaim is a bellwether.

"If they can shut this small Orthodox Jewish congregation down, they can shut down the prayer meeting, the Bible study, even the person who just has some friends over for dinner," he asserted.

"We realized very quickly that this had really national implications in terms of setting precedent for law and religious liberty in the United States," Rich added.

Another Opponent

But some in the neighborhood see it differently. They feel they were promised they'd live in a strictly residential situation, and they've ended up with a busy synagogue as a neighbor.

David Schneider lives across the street.

"They do services two times a day, seven times a week," he said of the congregation. "So, they're a very active congregation, which is wonderful, but that also means a lot of foot traffic, a lot of car traffic."

That and the potential for falling property values among other things prompted Schneider to lead a Highlands of McKamy homeowners association effort to sue Toras Chaim.

Schneider was asking for $50,000 in damages because he figured that's what the synagogue's presence was knocking off his property's value.

"Any type of thing that is non-residential, in my mind, would make this area stand out from other areas and make people less interested in buying at some future point in time," he said.

Critics Deny Anti-Semitism

Schneider is quick to say none of his objections are anti-Semitic.

"I know for some people, the first thought off their mind is, 'Well, if you're opposed to a synagogue, you must be anti-Semitic.' But you can be opposed to something a synagogue does without being opposed to the synagogue itself," he insisted.

To prove the point, Schneider pointed out he has offered to let congregants on busy days park in front of his home. He and others that sued made a $1,500 reward offer to help track down whoever painted the swastika on the rabbi's car.

But Rabbi Rich said that local attack really hurt.

"The amount of anxiety - having a lawsuit, a major lawsuit, that quite possibly the synagogue might have to close down and the members of the community would have to sell their homes and move somewhere else - it was just too much to bear," he told CBN News.

Short-Term Relief

Short-term relief came when a judge dismissed the neighborhood lawsuit. But then the city sued. The rabbi has tried to face the situation with humor.

"I was running out of material to speak about on the Sabbath morning. And so the city sued us and now I have new stuff to talk about again," he joked.

The Dallas City Attorney's Office rejected CBN News' request for an interview, but passed on a statement.

"The city of Dallas does not restrict the location of synagogues and any other places of worship anywhere in the city. Places of worship, however, are not exempt from complying with city ordinances," it said in part.

The city insists this case has nothing to do with religion. It's about a home that daily hosts meetings with people from outside the home while not adequately protecting them when it comes to fire and safety issues.

Dallas wants a second front entrance to the house, a sprinkler system installed, bathrooms made larger and handicap-compliant.

"They are asking us to put 13 parking spots on the property. I don't know where," Rich said. "And the interesting thing is that on the Sabbath, nobody drives; nobody parks on the street; you'll never find a car."

"I think the city has in their mind that this is not a handful of families who are coming together. That this is hundreds of people, and it's not," his lawyer, Butterfield, added.

"Often there's fewer than 20 people on a Sabbath," he explained, pointing out that "people will have 15 or 20 friends over all the time. I'm sure there are many Super Bowl parties that are double or triple that."

Schneider shot back, "And probably there are a few Super Bowl parties that should be regulated."

He argues the rules are the rules; the neighborhood is for single-family homes only, residential use only - and neighbors are upset because the synagogue doesn't meet the criteria.

"Pretty much most of the people around here would feel the same way if it were a medical clinic or a school," he insisted.

Government Overreach

But the judge who tossed the lawsuit Schneider spearheaded already announced Toras Chaim is protected by Congress's federal law RLUIPA - the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, as well as Texas' own version of RFRA - the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Both laws are meant to stop local governments from doing to small congregations what Dallas is trying to do to Toras Chaim.

And Butterfield has warned city attorneys that could come back and really bite the taxpayers of Dallas.

"I pointed them to some previous cases," he said. "There was one a couple of years ago in Los Angeles that resulted in an almost $1 million verdict against the city."

Butterfield's colleague at the Liberty Institute, General Counsel Jeff Mateer, added, "It's government overreaching and invading the sphere of our private lives."

He suggested there couldn't be any more fundamental a case.

"The bigger picture here is that this isn't just about a small group of Orthodox Jews. This is about anyone who wants to practice their faith in private homes," he asserted.

Still, the rabbi said it's a frightening time as his group faces their second lawsuit.

"Going up against the city has the perception of being something much bigger and much worse," he explained.

No matter the merits of this case - who's right, who's wrong, who wins, who loses - what's not in dispute is the fact that the very existence of the small religious group Congregation Toras Chaim is on the line.

Blog: Lone Soldiers – thousands of miles away from home

Blog: Lone Soldiers – thousands of miles away from home

Thursday, June 18, 2015 |  Israel Today Staff
They are young, they have often just finished high school and they have their future ahead of them. Enrolling in university, getting a job, earning money or maybe traveling throughout the world. But some of the Jewish adolescents in the diaspora decide for something totally different. They travel to Israel to join the Israeli Defense Force (IDF).
These persons are called lone soldiers. In general, the term “lone soldier” refers to ordinary conscripts who lack a traditional family support network within Israel like volunteers or new immigrants whose parents are abroad or Israelis without families like orphans or from “broken homes”.
According to official army statistics from December 2014, 6,191 lone soldiers were enrolled in the IDF last year. That is more than in any preceding year. Among them were 3,484 lone soldiers that grew up in another country, immigrated to Israel leaving family and friends behind to contribute their share to the Jewish state. These soldiers came from over 70 countries with a quarter of them coming from the USA followed by Russia and the Ukraine. Around half of them serve in combat units or in combat-support units. The figures regarding the share of female soldiers are surprising. Almost a third of recruits from abroad are women.
During operation “protective shield”, three lone soldiers lost their lives: Max Steinberg and Sean Carmeli from the USA and Jordan Bensemhoun from France. According to Israeli media over 30,000 mourners attended the funeral of Steinberg and some 20,000 the funeral of Carmeli in last year.
But what motivates young Jews to join the IDF even though their center of life is outside Israel?
A 22 year old man from New York that serves in the IDF explained his motivations. “In the United States, I worked for a business company and earned pretty well. But after working there for a couple of years, I had the feeling that there must be something more in life, something meaningful,” he said. “As a Jew Israel was always a central part of my life.” In the first months he learned basic Hebrew before his military service started. He doesn’t regret his decision at all, “I became a different person, a stronger one.”

With Fathers Missing, Is There Any Hope for Black Families?

With Fathers Missing, Is There Any Hope for Black Families?

Little boy praying
Let each one of us pray for an opportunity to partner with the Lord in redeeming and returning what has been lost—the black men of America. (Flickr/Creative Commons)
More than one and a half million black men in America are missing. Where are they? Where did they go? Incarcerated. Dead. Just—missing.
According to the New York Times analysis on its blog "The Upshot," more than one of every six African American men who would be between the ages of 25 and 54 are simply not present in society.
These men are not present to contribute to their communities, not present in the workforce, and not present as husbands or fathers.
"The State of the Black Family," an in-depth report released by Family Research Council in February, reveals that only 17 percent of black 17 year-olds currently reside in a home with their biological mother and father; the overwhelming majority (83 percent) have experienced the effects of divorce, premarital sex, and other forms of rejecting the nuclear family.
For me, this information elicits great concern and worry for the future of black children in this country. Regardless of race, men were created by God to contribute leadership, support, and protection to the family unit. Men are generally called to be fathers and providers for their wives and children.
Can you imagine living in a world where all the men are gone? This is the reality for most black communities. Children growing up without fathers; women and girls who choose to raise black children on their own or choose to abort their babies in order to avoid the stress of doing it all alone.
What is to become then of an entire ethnic group that has suffered, even generationally, from the absence of its men?
We know that in many communities more black babies are being aborted than are being born. As a people, African Americans are decreasing at an alarming rate. It has been said to me in the past that if black people were likened to bald eagles, or any other animal on the verge of extinction, the entire race would be placed on the endangered species list.
The future looks bleak for black people in this country, if you look at the numbers alone. But I have an eternal hope in God's promise over the black community—for the restoration of its men to their rightful place as heads of the nuclear family, and more importantly to right relationship with Jesus Christ.
In promoting the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse, President Barack Obama has said: "We need fathers to realize that responsibility does not end at conception. We need them to realize that what makes you a man is not the ability to have a child—it's the courage to raise one."
I find it interesting that even in what has become the most pro-choice administration in American history, our President recognizes that men must choose to be fathers—albeit a profoundly difficult, selfless, and courageous decision. This is especially true for black men who have disproportionately experienced poverty, racism, and other forms of stigmatization in American society for hundreds of years.
However noble the intention, President Obama's fatherhood initiative fails to specifically address the plight of black men and fatherlessness in the black community. The initiative lacks communication of a plan outlining what it will take to turn this around.
There's a good reason for this: there is no remedy outside of prayer for revival in the black community and the church of God responding in faith-based urgency with appropriate understanding.
Here's the truth—the black community is and has been in crisis. Our children are dying. This crisis is no different from the Old Testament days, when a whole society watched as its babies were thrown into fires as acts of demonic worship. Where were the fathers? Why weren't their hearts turned towards the children?
Without prayer, the hearts of black fathers will not turn to their children. Without the church stepping to the front with a willingness to disciple young black mothers and black children, this cycle will continue to repeat. My fear is that we can only repeat so many times before we are no more.
I am full of hope today. God has called the black community to shine with restorative hope in this country. When it happens, it will be a sign of God's faithfulness—a sign that He can do anything. However, it is imperative that as a nation, and especially as people of God, that we see the black community as a mission field of high priority and strive to diligently preach and live the gospel among them.
On this upcoming Father's Day, let us pray that the hearts of the fathers are truly turned towards their children. Let us pray that the heart of the church understands and responds with urgency to the crisis going on in the black community today.
Let each one of us pray for an opportunity to partner with the Lord in redeeming and returning what has been lost—the black men of America.

Why Would You Pick a Hebrew Name? ✡ "Jeremiah Son of Hilkiah"

The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin.

Jerusalem Inspiration

In today's verse we are introduced to the prophet Jeremiah as the son of Hilkiah, from the priests of Anatot.  We know that there are no extraneous words in the holy Bible, so this introduction has significance!  Tradition tells us that when a person is presented as his father's son, this specifically lends importance to his direct lineage.  Hilikiah, it is taught, was a great prophet himself, and it would only be fitting to introduce Jeremiah while giving recognition to his prophet father.
