Israel, Egypt Partnering to Topple Hamas - Breaking Israel News
Israel, Egypt Partnering to Topple Hamas
Posted by: Ahuva Balofsky January 21, 2014 Breaking Israel News
“Will two walk together, except they have agreed?” (Amos 3:3)
Following the return of the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt in the 1979 Camp David Peace Accords, Egypt was forbidden from deploying forces in the region closest to the Israeli border. The Times of Israel reports that recently, Israel has been allowing the Egyptian army to expand its presence there in an effort to curb the activities of Hamas in Gaza.
An Israeli official spoke to the news site on condition of anonymity, as official relations between Israel and Egypt are strained. “Cooperation is growing tighter on the intelligence and operational level — in fact, on all military levels,” he said. “Both countries want to crush Hamas, but we need to be smart about it.”
Israel is permitting Egyptian Apache helicopters, already active in the area, to circle the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip to intimidate the ruling party.
The Reuters news agency reported last week that Egypt was stepping up its efforts to undermine Hamas, which it sees as a threat to its national security. According to the report, four high-level Egyptian officials identified Hamas as Cairo’s next priority after subduing the Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas is an offshoot of that organization. The officials detailed some of the actions being taken against Hamas, including working with rival Fatah party and supporting popular anti-Hamas activity in the Gaza Strip. In early January, Cairo hosted a conference for a new anti-Hamas youth movement based in Gaza, called Tamarud, or “rebel”.
Egypt underwent its own turmoil last year when the democratically-elected president Mohammed Morsi was ousted by the military. Morsi is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and supported Hamas through his actions during his presidency. He was deposed when millions in Egypt took to the streets last July, demanding that he step down. He is now to be tried on a number of charges, ranging from mocking the judiciary to incitement to kill protesters. Since the military took over, the frosty, albeit peaceful, relationship between Israel and Egypt has been quietly improving.
“Since July, there’s more willingness to speak to us. The tone has changed,” the Israeli official said.
The 1979 Peace Accords included a military appendix, prohibiting Egypt from sending forces into the area of the Sinai Peninsula closest to Israel. However, in 2005, then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon authorized the deployment of 750 Egyptian troops to patrol the border with Gaza, following Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. Today, amendments made to the appendix and renewed every month allow both ground and air forces from Egypt to fight Islamist forces in the northeastern Sinai region. “In practice, the military appendix is nonexistent,” the official said. Currently, ten Egyptian brigades are active in Sinai.

Israel's Ariel Sharon Laid to Rest - CBN News
Israel's Ariel Sharon Laid to Rest
Israeli President Shimon Peres, a longtime friend of Sharon, called him a "man of the land" and a "military legend."
Sharon's body made the trip from the parliament to southern Israel and Sharon's ranch.
On the way, Israel's military honored Sharon at Latrun, the site of one of the Jewish state's pivotal battles during the War of Independence in 1948, where Sharon fought and was wounded. Then his body made its way to his ranch and final resting place.
At the gravesite, Sharon's two children, Gilad, and Omri, had their shirts torn as a biblical sign of mourning. His son, Gilad, declared his father turned the impossible into reality.
Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Benny Gantz saluted Sharon as commander and said the IDF would continue to emulate his military initiatives.
Sharon leaves behind a rich legacy in Israel's modern history.
For nearly 60 years -- for better or for worse -- Sharon was on the front lines of Israel's military and political battles.
Sharon was lionized for his heroics in the 1967 Six Day War and for how he turned the tide of the battle in the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
Still, many criticized his actions in the 1982 Lebanon War and the bitter 2005 unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
Yet at his funeral, his supporters remembered Sharon as a leader who felt a deep responsibility for the Jewish state, its people, and their Promised Land.

Sharon's Prophetic Question about Middle East Christians
In 1982 Israel invaded Lebanon. One of the architects of that invasion was Ariel Sharon, who was laid to rest on January 13, 2014.
While there were many tragedies and mistakes associated with Israel's invasion, it came in response to the mini-terror state Yasser Arafat and the PLO had established within Lebanese territory. He used it as a base to carry out cross-border attacks against Israel.
Arafat also terrorized Lebanon's Christian community and committed a number of atrocities.
Sharon spoke with Pat Robertson on The 700 Club in 1989 about Lebanon and Israel's commitment to helping the Lebanese Christians. He asked where the West was and why it didn't come to the aid of the Christians?
More than 30 years later, with Christians fleeing the Middle East in unprecedented numbers because of Islamic terrorism, Sharon's question remains as valid now as it was then.
"Israel has been helping the small Christian community in Lebanon since 1975. It was started then by Prime Minister Rabin and Minister of Defense, Mr. Peres. We ourselves, the Jews, being a small nation and a minority, we understood the need to support and back that small Christian community. And since then, these relations developed.
For many years, Israel was the only country that supported. We sent our medical doctors there, we sent our helicopters to evacuate the wounded. I never saw others doing this. At the present time, we can see the disaster in Lebanon. We can see the atrocities, the heavy shelling by the Syrians, and what bothers me is that the free world-the Western democracies-are not taking the steps in order to help the Christians.
We ourselves were asked to leave Lebanon. We did what we could have done. But what about the Western world? I think the Western world should come up and stick to its commitment not to let the Syrians and the, the terrorist organizations-the Arab terrorist organizations-to threaten the small Christian community."

Israel Today: Israel, Foreign Dignitaries Lay Ariel Sharon to Rest
Israel, Foreign Dignitaries Lay Ariel Sharon to Rest
Monday, January 13, 2014 | Israel Today Staff
Former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon took the ride to his final resting place in the southern Negev region on Monday following a pair of memorial ceremonies in Jerusalem and Latrun.
The morning started at the Knesset in Jerusalem, where Israeli officials were joined by more than a dozen foreign dignitaries, including US Vice President Biden, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Czech Prime Minister Jiri Rusnok, Russian parliamentary head Sergey Naryshkin, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Spanish Home Affairs Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz and Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander.
Biden and Blair joined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres in eulogizing Sharon.
A massive convoy then made its way to Latrun, where a then-20-year-old Sharon took part and was seriously wounded in a bloody battle against Arab forces during Israel's War of Independence.
Arriving at Sharon's Sycamore Ranch in the Negev, a group of senior IDF generals lowered the former leader's coffin into the ground next to his late wife Lily.
With the Sycamore Ranch situated so close to the Gaza Strip, security officials had feared Palestinian terrorists would try to attack the funeral with rockets. Indeed, earlier in the day two rockets were fired from Gaza, but failed to reach southern Israel.
Standing at the graveside, IDF Chief of Staff Gen. Benny Gantz told Sharon, revered by many as one of history's greatest Jewish warriors, that the Israeli army continues to "march to the sound of your footsteps."
Sharon's tearful son, Gilad, mourned a father who had "become a national legend."

Last of Israel's Great Lions Passes Away (Jan. 11, 2014) - Ariel Sharon (Blog Editor's Note & Israel Today)
The Lion of Judah is coming soon.
Love For His People Blog Editor's Note: From time to time we see those who mirror a character image of the great Lord God of Israel. As an American, I was always impressed with the commitment IDF General Ariel Sharon lived by, to defend his people in the land of Israel. He was a great leader, and will be remembered as such - as a great lion.
The Lion of Judah Himself, Yeshua HaMashiach (Jesus Christ) will show Himself strong on His people's behalf, as they continue to withstand the onslaught of the surrounding enemy against them.

Israel former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon died on Saturday after eight years in a coma following a brain hemorrhage in January 2006. His coffin was to lie in state at the Knesset on Sunday, and his funeral was scheduled for Monday at Sharon’s Sycamore Ranch in the southern Negev region. He was 85.
Sharon was the last of a generation of Israeli leaders and warriors that knew how to get the job done. Often controversial, Sharon was not afraid to bend and even break the rules in order to accomplish his and what he felt were the nation’s goals. And more than once, that approach is believed to have saved the State of Israel from disaster.
David Ben Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister, famously labeled Sharon as the Jewish state’s “greatest field commander” for his uncanny ability to remain calm and turn the tide of battle. Sharon carried that level of composure and confidence into his political career where, again often contentious, he managed to get things done that others viewed as being out of reach.
From daring and defiant military maneuvers that brought Israel some of its greatest wartime victories, to brutal anti-terror campaigns that taught Israel’s enemies that Jewish blood is not cheap, to bulldozing through some of Israel’s toughest political issues, Sharon demonstrated a decisiveness that is sorely lacking in most of the nation’s leaders today.
The reaction of former left-wing opposition leader Yossi Sarid to Sharon’s death perhaps best relates the impact he had on this nation:
“[Ariel Sharon] was the most present and influential person in the country in the past two generations. Lots of people wanted to influence and leave their mark, but nobody, for better or for worse, left such a deep mark on our history in the past few decades.”
