NOW THINK ON THIS - How They Came About - Steve Martin messages

Feb. 18, 2014

Greetings all.

When the Lord was speaking to me about an "updated" name for my Ahava Love Letters, I wasn't sure what the new name of the articles/messages would be. So I just listed about 20 possibilites on a sheet of paper, and then asked my good wife Laurie to circle one or two. I was hoping, actually, she would select a few that I thought would be good.

She circled "Now Think Of This." (Now husbands, you need to respect the intuition and wisdom of your wife. She has been given to you as a gift from the Lord, as your soul mate/helper. And she has good input!)

In some ways, I think these words were part of my remembrance from my days at Derek Prince Ministries (the second set of years from 2001-2005.) Derek Wesley Selby, the graphic artist, Director of Communications, and another grandson of Derek Prince, was seeking ways to expand the ministry. Radio, books and the next generation were the emphasis. He came up with the idea of a one-minute message on radio, from his grandfather Derek's vast collection of recorded audio and video messages over the previous 25 years.

Derek Wesley called it, "Think About This." We tried it for while as a ministry radio outreach, but it didn't reach the level we wanted. So it lays in the archived files now I am sure.

So back here in January, 2014, I was at a junction in this outreach of Love For His People. What was the Lord wanting to call the name of my regularly published messages, rather than Ahava Love Letters? I had really loved the name, still do, but I felt a name change would expand the readership. The first name had been in place since November, 2010. We started using this new name in late January, 2014.

Just today, Feb. 18, 2014, I was reading a word from The Elijah List from Kathie Walters. In it she was describing peppermint refreshing (which has nothing to do with this article) but she wrote something that very well did.

And angel was speaking to her, in a dream.

"'His love has no limits.' Think about that, Kathie. Your mind can't even imagine something limitless."

"'His grace has no measure.' Think about that too...there is no measure at all to even be able to measure Jesus' grace. There's nothing in the world to measure it with."

He went on singing one line at a time, and then telling me, "Think about that," which is what "selah" from the Psalms means ("think on this"). Kathie Walters

I never knew that. Or if I did, I certainly had forgotten. (Another senior moment, at age 59.)

It is good to know that the Hebrew word selah, from the Psalms, means "think on this."

Now Think On This can thus mean that.

I love it when the Lord confirms His rhema (now word) to us.

Now think on this,

Steve Martin

My 10 Year Ordination Anniversary..after the double.

Ten Year Anniversary
Jan. 18, 2004

Ten years ago, on Jan. 18, 2004, I was ordained into the ministry. Jim Hill, Mark C. DeVito, Brian Cockfield, Allen Robinson were the ordaining ministers, through Cornerstone Fellowship in Pineville, NC. Prophetic words spoken then have surely come to fulfillment already in many ways, especially in regards to "holding a staff for Zion" (Israel).

And then to make sure it "stuck" (my word) I was ordained again with Christians For Messiah Ministries (Peter Wyns, Richard Tompkins and Jesse Enns, pastors at Antioch International Church in Fort Mill, SC.) on Nov. 24, 2009.

It was the day after my 55th birthday, just to make sure I got the "double anointing" that Elisha also asked for! (5-5 on 2nd ordination)

My life Amazing true love story of Derek Prince, his two wives and 12 daughters

Derek teaching the Word

Lydia Christensen Prince

Lydia Christensen Prince (1890-1975) was born in North Jutland, at the northern tip of Denmark, the youngest of four sisters in an affluent family. Her father was a successful builder who played an important role in developing their home town of Bronderslev. Lydia became a teacher in the state school system of Denmark and was a pioneer in the field of home economics.

By 1925, she had obtained a post as director of home economics in a large new school in the town of Korsor. While seeking more meaning for her life, she started reading the Bible and received a vision of Jesus Christ that led to her salvation and baptism in the Holy Spirit. After months of earnest prayer and waiting upon God, she became convinced that God was asking her to give up her position as a teacher and go to Jerusalem in the tumultuous days before Israel became a nation.

In October 1928, at the age of thirty-eight, she set out for Jerusalem with about $200 in traveler's checks, no mission or church to support her, and no idea of what she was to do when she arrived.

She soon established herself there, learned Arabic, and founded a children's home, becoming the cherished "mother" to dozens of Jewish and Arab orphans, mainly girls, eight of whom became her own children. She also began ministering the gospel to Arab women and later to the British soldiers who visited Jerusalem during their furloughs in World War II.

In the mid-1940s, she met and married Derek Prince, a philosophy and language scholar, who was serving in the British army and was stationed in Jerusalem. They ministered there together until the birth of the State of Israel in 1948 when they moved to England with their eight girls. The Princes served congregations, taught, and ministered while living in England, Africa (where they adopted their ninth daughter), Canada, and the United States.

After settling in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, they began traveling internationally as Derek preached and taught the Bible in many nations of the world. Throughout these years, Lydia took care of their family, worked tirelessly and faithfully alongside Derek in their ministry, and even returned to her home economics roots when they were in Africa, teaching home economics to the African women students.

Following a stroke and a two-year illness, Lydia Christensen Prince died in October 1975. Her passing was deeply mourned by her family and thousands of people worldwide from a wide variety of backgrounds whose lives she had touched in her nearly fifty years of enthusiastic, energetic, and compassionate ministry.

For more on Lydia, there is a movie production:

“More Than Ten Words” - Ahava Love Letter (Steve Martin)

    “More Than Ten Words”

But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction…” (1 Thess. 5:12, NAS)

 Dear family of friends,

There are several people who now and then impact your life in such a way that you want to emulate them, model your life after theirs, or simply appreciate the encouragement they have for you. There are not many among us who give themselves fully to the Lord’s purposes, and lay themselves down for others, nonstop.

I know of such a one. I first met him when I was administrator at an international ministry/church in the Charlotte, NC area. He hailed from Canada. The country where it can be colder more often than I would like it. But even back then, in 1995, his enduring warmth was a heart warmer.

Several years later, in 2002, we both had the privilege of working together with Derek Prince Ministries. He didn’t get the job as Director of Outreach because he was a grandson of Derek Prince, but because he had the gifting and commitment to serve with all his heart. It was that fact which had the Lord put him in the place he would excel in.

His name is Peter Wyns. Now, he officially has the title of “Doctor”, due to his accomplishments in writing and teaching, but I know him as simply Peter, my friend.

In 2010, the first year of our newborn ministry Love For His People, Peter had became the Senior Pastor at Antioch International Church in Fort Mill, SC. Knowing of our shared love and support for Israel, Peter asked Laurie and I to join with them and head up a new weekly gathering called Beit Tikvah (House of Hope), which we did.

As part of the meeting, we shared the Shabbat candle lighting, bread and wine, and then the Messianic worship with our Ahava Love Band. Peter followed with his enthusiastically spoken, truthful words on Israel, our debt to the Jewish people, and of his own Jewish lineage. (His Jewish mother  was born in Israel, one of the first adopted daughters of Derek and Lydia Prince.)

Peter and his good wife Joy amaze me with their zeal, constant travel to take the Gospel to the nations (44 and counting), and their faithful love and grace for the people of Antioch. (I once called Peter the real “Energizer Bunny”, as he sometimes wore me out just watching him! And as for Joy – she is the perfect help mate for her husband!)

In a Thanksgiving Sunday message, Peter encouraged the congregants to share a thank you with each other, but to make it more than just the normal two words “thank you.” He motivated us to use at least ten words, which would then let the other know you had thought about it, and meant it.

And so in this Ahava Love Letter, Laurie and I truly give thanks for his faithful friendship, his committed care, and for the long lasting legacy we know is and will be that of Peter Wyns.

We love you Peter and Joy!

Ahava to my family of friends,

Derek Prince - A Throne for the King

Daily Devotional by Derek Prince.

A Throne for the King

Psalm 22:3

This particular Word is a word spoken by the psalmist to the Lord:

"Yet thou art holy, O Thou who art enthroned upon the praises of Israel." NASB

What a beautiful revelation that is – when we realize that the throne that God sits upon is the praises of His people.

God is Holy. God is a King. He’s the King of kings and Lord of lords. We do not make Him a King by praising Him, but we offer Him the throne, which is His due.

You see, Jesus said: “When two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst.” His presence in our midst is guaranteed. It depends upon His faithfulness, not our response. But when He comes in our midst – as the King of kings and the Lord of lords – it’s very right and appropriate that we respond to Him as a King.

As a King, He merits a throne; nothing else becomes Him. And it is our privilege to offer Him the throne. When we praise Him, when we exalt Him, when we sing praises and glorify His name and extol His majesty, then we are acknowledging His Kingship and we are responding in a way that is appropriate. We are offering Him a throne to sit upon – the throne of our praises.

Oh, let’s be careful that we respond to the Lord by giving Him His throne.

NOW IT’S OUR TURN - Dick Leggatt, President of DPM-USA (Derek Prince Ministries)

Dick Leggatt

NOW IT’S OUR TURN

Are you moving forward with a clear sense of purpose? Do you feel you are running the race that the Lord has set out for you to run? Is there a sense of a continuing legacy you will leave for those who follow you after your race is completed?

These are extremely important life questions for each of us. The aspect of legacy is very much on our minds right now concerning the work of Derek Prince Ministries, especially as we mark ten years since Derek’s passing on September 24, 2003. Amazingly, the legacy of his life, ministry and teaching is going strong ten years after his departure. In fact, the impact not only continues but expands all around the world.

It is our hope that the content of this letter, including some of our reflections on Derek’s legacy, will be a great encouragement to you as you consider the impact of your own life as you run your leg of the race of faith.

“I Miss Him”

Just recently, the Derek Prince Legacy Radio team was doing some recording work together. Stephen Mansfield, writer of Derek’s biography and host of the Derek Prince Legacy Radio broadcasts, was in the recording booth. I was in the studio control room with Jon Simpson, our producer and recording session director, along with the engineer who was doing the recording.

Between takes, Stephen and I were sharing memories of some of our personal times with Derek, and I concluded by saying something like, “He sure was a great guy.” Somewhat wistfully, Stephen remarked, “I miss him,” and I responded, “I do, too.” There was silence among us for just a few minutes in that studio as the depth of the statement, “I miss him,” sank in for all of us.

It’s hard to believe that ten years have passed since Derek stepped into the glorious presence of Jesus Christ. We all miss him. But who among us would have ever thought that the legacy of his ministry would be continuing as strong as it is today?

A few years before his passing, even Derek himself had to change his mind about continuing the ministry. Many years before his death, when asked what should be done with the ministry after his passing, Derek’s response had been clear and curt: “Shut it down.” But in the succeeding months after giving that response, the Holy Spirit began to work on Derek, re-shaping his response from “Shut it down” to “Carry on!”

In those months of hearing from the Lord, Derek had become convinced that God’s plan for the ministry was that it should continue after his passing: "It is my desire—and I believe the Lord’s desire—that Derek Prince Ministries should continue the work started through me over 60 years ago, until Jesus returns.”

And so it has—in a most amazing way. And so it will.

“Let Us Also…”

Even before stepping into the position of leadership at DPM–USA over seven years ago, I had invested a lot of study time in Hebrews 11 and Hebrews 12. In fact, if anyone would have asked me over the last four decades what I considered to be my “life verses,” I would have immediately responded: “Hebrews 12:1–2.”

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Heb. 12:1–2 NASB)

The irony is that for many years, I misquoted the verse. How, you ask? Without realizing it, I was leaving out the word “also” in the phrase “let us also lay aside every encumbrance.” The “also” there is a very important point, linking this verse directly to all of Hebrews 11—the record of the Bible’s greatest heroes in the faith.

Derek always said, “Whenever you see a ‘therefore,’ you need to find out what it’s ‘there for.’” That particular “therefore” precedes the mention of the cloud of witnesses, of which Derek is now a vital part. Theologians have differing views as to whether that cloud of witnesses is actively looking on as we run our leg of the race of faith they began. However, ever since I began at Derek Prince Ministries, I have had a clear sense that I am working in full view of that cloud of witnesses.

Derek is among them; my father-in-law, Don Basham, is among them; my father and mother are among them, as well as many friends, family and other “fathers in the faith.” I choose to believe that all of them, the entire host of heroes of the faith, are cheering us on. They earnestly want to see us successfully complete the leg of the race that we—also—are expected to run. Indeed, they have a stake in it.

The First Leg of the Race

Space does not permit a full discussion of all the implications of Hebrews 11 and 12 in our lives. Just one important aspect, though, is that those who have gone on before us began the race, but we will do the finishing lap on the race they began. (Please see that mysterious verse, Hebrews 11:40, which says “…that they should not be made perfect apart from us.”)

So how did Derek begin his race? We thought you would be encouraged by some of the excerpts from an interview in which he talked about his early years.

God, when I was baptized in the Holy Spirit, gave me the gift of interpretation of tongues. I was so inexperienced and unspiritual I didn’t know that you had to wait six months to get any spiritual gifts, so I just got it the night I was baptized in the Spirit and spoke in tongues. The first night, I had the most wonderful succession of poetic messages, and I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the language.

But I only remember one very short passage, which went like this: “It shall be like a little stream—the little stream shall become a river, the river shall become a great river, the great river shall become a sea, and the sea shall become a mighty ocean. And it shall be through thee.” I had really no idea what God was talking about.

Another example was when I was about to be discharged from the Army. I was praying and I got this tongue and interpretation in which God said, “I have called thee to be a teacher of the Scriptures in truth, in faith and love, which are in Christ Jesus.” And then He paused and said, “…for many.”

If He had even tried to tell me how many people I would reach, I wouldn’t have been able to believe it. But there is no way of being able to calculate the number of people I have reached. It must be in the millions—and I give God all the glory. See, it was His plan.

That’s one thing I’ve been careful about. I haven’t always succeeded, but I’ve always tried to find out what is God’s plan. Not, what do I think I should do, or what do other people think I should do, but what does God think I should do.

Our Leg of the Race

Are you inspired to know that Derek completed his leg of the race so effectively? Actually, I find it tremendously moving, and somewhat challenging. Somehow, I can believe that God would do it through Derek, but find it hard to believe He could do it through me. Do you feel the same way?

If you are battling with that same response, I think we ought to pray together right now. We have Derek’s testimony before us—the record of the Lord reaching out and touching a 25-year-old corporal in the British army, transforming him into a Bible teacher with worldwide impact. Couldn’t the Lord touch us and use us in a similar fashion?

Maybe ours will not be some worldwide outreach or expansive ministry like Derek’s. But certainly the Lord wants to use you and me in a very significant way for His glory and for the sake of His kingdom. Are you ready to offer yourself to the Lord to be used in whatever way He would choose?

Dear Lord Jesus, here I stand before You, desiring to be used for whatever purpose You have destined me to fulfill. In full recognition of my faults and my weaknesses, I present myself to You. I am Yours, Jesus. You can do all the needed repair work. You can transform me into the person You have destined me to be.

As I look at Derek’s testimony, knowing that he has completed his leg of the race, I also present myself to You for my leg of the relay race. I see the baton before me, and I receive it as from Your hand. In Your presence, and in the presence of that great cloud of witnesses, I receive the baton and commit myself to run the race that You have set before me with endurance, fixing my eyes on You for the strength and stamina I will need to complete it.

I am Yours, Lord Jesus. Help me run the race and finish it in a way that brings maximum glory to Your name. Amen.

Fellow Runners

Take a moment now. Open and close your hand right now, imagining that you are holding the baton that Derek Prince and others have passed along to you. The track extends before you; your lane is clear; and you have one lap to go. Are you ready to run that lap for all you are worth? Thank God that you are willing to do so!

You’ll be glad to know that all of us here at DPM–USA have made a decision very similar to the one you have just made. In fact, that’s why we’re doing what we are doing. We are running in the lane right beside you. For that reason, we have the greatest desire to help you in every aspect of the race.

One of the best ways for us to help is to keep you supplied with substantive materials from Derek Prince’s teaching legacy—books, CDs and DVDs that can encourage you and inspire you to run with endurance.

How would you like to have the full MP3 interview, “Derek Prince: His Life, His Work” from which we took the earlier excerpt? Just click here to download. You can enjoy it with our blessings and compliments.

Offering you Derek’s material is just one small expression of our enormous thanks to you for your prayers and financial support. This wonderful work goes on because so many like yourself carry such a strong commitment to see it continue. Thank you so very much—and please keep us posted on the progress you are making in your leg of the race. Every time we hear from you, it encourages us tremendously.

In more ways than one, it’s time to run. Are you ready? Ready for the leg of the race that the Lord has set before you and me? Now it’s our turn!

All the best,

Dick Leggatt
President, DPM–USA

The Promise: One Man's Journey to See God's Word Revealed (My first book now available)

Promise: One Man's Journey to See God's Word Revealed

Book Description

September 6, 2013

Throughout our lives, God keeps His hand on our shoulders and nudges us on to more than what we could ever realize. I am excited to share how He did this with me, and am confident it will be a story you’ll be able to relate to.

As I unveil my story, think back to those times when you knew there was some thing more but you just couldn’t put your finger on it. You knew deep down that life wasn’t what the TV sitcoms portrayed it to be. In our souls there is the hope, the cry for more, that someday questions will be answered and promises fulfilled if we just kept plugging away at what we know to do.

In The Promise I share my 40 year journey with you, and show you that dreams do come true. Though Peter Pan isn’t real, the Lord, the One Who created us, certainly is, and He has a plan in place for each one of us. When you are done reading this story, my prayer is that you too will know more of that good plan and His purpose for you.

“Have your delight in the Lord,
and He will give you
the desires of your heart.
Trust also in Him,
and He will do it.”

Psalm 37:3,4

Dedication

To all those who have a desire and a dream that is yet to be fulfilled, but continue to hang onto the promise the Lord has given you – I dedicate this book.

In agreement with the Bible verse that I have printed on a note card standing upright on my home computer desk, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:0, NIV), I declare that He will do it.

As surely as the Lord God of Israel lives, He will bring it to pass.

We’ve Only Just Begun…

Back in the ‘70’s, when music was still decent, and you could really understand the words, a brother and a sister, the Carpenters, came out with a popular song,  We’ve Only Just Begun.  For those of us around at that time, songs like this gave us some hope, as we made our way through grade school or high school.  Deep in our souls, whether we realized it back then or not, something, or Someone, was calling after us, and songs on the radio helped draw us on.

Not sure which way to go at times, we knew something was still possible, even as our parents sought after the “Almighty Dollar”, and the Sunday service was at least a place the family, which still looked like one, went to on Sundays.  Friday night football games, followed by the sock-hop (finally realized that we had to wear socks, not our shoes, because of the gym wooden floor), gave us potential stability, after coming out of the ‘60’s and before the ‘80’s hit.

Through it all, Someone kept His hand on our shoulders, and nudged us on to more than what we would ever realize, before now.  And then…boom! The answer comes in an unexpected way.

As I unveil this story, think back to those times that you knew there was something more, but you just couldn’t put your hand on it.  You knew, deep down, that life wasn’t just what Walter Cronkite said it was every night on the CBS news, or that the faith and love shown by John Boy to Grandpa, Jim Bob, and the other twenty Waltons wasn’t just for their family.  Deep down in our souls, the hope, the cry for more, would someday be answered and fulfilled, if we just kept plugging away at what we did know.

I want you to share my journey with me, as I look back over the last forty years, and you see that dreams do come true, and that though Peter Pan isn’t real, the Lord, the One Who created us, is, and He has a plan in place for each one of us.  And when you are done reading this story, you too will know that…we’ve only just begun.
