Why Jezebel Is on a Losing Streak on the Entertainment Mountain

The Jezebel spirit has been making its mark on our airwaves—and in our movie theaters—long enough. Television and film producers have made billions of dollars selling sex on the small screen and the big screen but intercession over the entertainment industry is starting to bear fruit.

Before we go further, let me clarify how the Jezebel spirit is working. I go into greater detail about this in my book, The Spiritual Warrior's Guide to Defeating Jezebel, but let Revelation 2:20 open your eyes to what the Jezebel spirit is and what are its motives: "But I have a few things against you," Jesus told the church at Thyatira, "You permit that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat food sacrificed to idols."

Jezebel is a seducing spirit. This spirit has been working overtime in our media for decades, with wardrobe malfunctions, illicit homosexual sex scenes on shows like How to Get Away With Murder, and the ever-popular and scandalous Scandal. But intercessors have been coming against the perversion in the entertainment industry and it's working.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is fining WDBJ Television $325,000 for broadcasting graphic and sexually explicit material during the station's evening newscast. Keep in mind that this never would have happened if people like you hadn't lifted their voices.

Indeed, the FCC's Enforcement Bureau investigated viewer complaints that WDBJ aired a news report that included graphic sexual images taken from an adult film website in the report. This enforcement action would be the highest fine the Commission has ever taken for a single indecent broadcast on one station.

"Our action here sends a clear signal that there are severe consequences for TV stations that air sexually explicit images when children are likely to be watching," says Travis LeBlanc, Chief of the FCC's Enforcement Bureau.

Glory to God!

Here's the backstory: The FCC investigation found that station staff obtained a sexually explicit video clip from an adult film website and broadcast those explicit images in the news report that aired at about 6 p.m. on July 12, 2012. That, of course, violated federal laws prohibiting the broadcast of indecent programming.

That's just one recent example of viewers rejecting Jezebelic content. Earlier this week, I wrote about how Sex Box, which featured real-life couples having sex for a national television audience, was cancelled. In the show, participants entered a soundproof box on stage, had sex and then discussed their "intimacy issues" with a panel of so-called experts, including a minister! WE tv, which hosted the show, called it a "groundbreaking, unprecedented and life-changing way for couples in crisis to heal their sexual and emotional issues." Prayer broke through. Meanwhile, Bayer pulled a sexually inappropriate Lotrimin ad less than 24 hours after the Americans cried out.

Although there's still plenty of work to do—and still plenty of intercession to make—these and other victories are evidence that the combination of prayer and action work. Of course, some people still don't get it. Jezebel has already blinded them. WDBJ, for example, is at a loss for why the FCC would fine it $325,000.

"We are surprised and disappointed that the FCC has decided to propose to fine WDBJ7 for a fleeting image on the very edge of some television screens during a news broadcast," said WDBJ7 President Jeffrey Marks. "The story had gone through a review before it aired. Inclusion of the image was purely unintentional. The picture in question was small and outside the viewing area of the video-editing screen."

Likely story. Let's keep praying—and keep lifting our voices.

A Shemittah Year Mandate: Throw Jezebel Down!

A myriad of prophetic words have been released regarding 2015, which coincide with Shemittah year 5775. While some prophets are declaring that 2015 will be a year of escalating terrorism, war, pestilence and economic collapse, others are declaring that it will be a turnaround year of divine reversals, breakthrough, multiplied grace and new beginnings. On the surface it seems as if these prophetic declarations contradict one another, bringing confusion to some within the body.

However, when these diverse prophecies are prayerfully evaluated, embraced and executed, the bride will be victorious in the season ahead. For instance, prophetic warnings regarding impending global judgments should catalyze the faithful to mobilize prayer and evangelistic relief efforts. Solemn prophetic rebukes to the worldly and lukewarm should lead them to profound repentance. Inspirational prophetic words should renew vision and restore hope among those who have forsaken all to fulfill the Master's end-time harvest strategies (Ps. 91:5-6, Esth. 9:25).

Regarding the Shemittah year 5775, it is crucial that the remnant church understand and execute all aspects of the divine directives associated with this pivotal year. In Scripture, Shemittah is the seventh or Sabbath year of a seven-year cycle, during which Israel left their fields fallow and released all debts. In fact, the word Shemittah is a Hebrew word meaning "release."

A Shemittah year is one in which nations honoring Jehovah and Israel experience peace, blessing, freedom and exaltation, while those who dishonor the Lord often reap destruction and hardship. Regrettably, the past two Shemittah years, 5761 (2001) and 5768 (2008), were characterized by terrorism and economic judgment (Deut. 15:1-2).

What is not commonly known about Shemittah is that it is derived from the Hebrew root word "shamat," which is used nine times in Scripture. In three instances "shamat" is translated "throw down" and is used in the passage where Jehu commanded two eunuchs to throw Jezebel down from a second story window, killing her. Jezebel's demise at the hands of Jehu ultimately resulted in the obliteration of Baal worship in Israel.

Could it be in this Shemittah year that the preparation of the bride and expansion of the kingdom of heaven on earth are contingent upon the exposition and elimination of the Jezebel spirits among us?

2 Kings 9:33 "He said, 'Drop her down.' So they dropped her down and some of her blood splattered on the wall and on the horses. Then he trampled her."

Jezebel was the wife of King Ahab, who reigned in Israel during the time of Elijah. Ahab and Jezebel were devout worshippers of Baal and Asherah, and led all of Israel into idolatry. Jezebel hated and massacred all of the Lord's prophets, except for Elijah and 100 prophets of the Lord that were hid in caves by Obadiah, the palace governor (1 Kin. 18:4).

Jezebel is witchcraft personified. Witchcraft is a rebellious work of the flesh, exercising counterfeit spiritual authority to manipulate others for selfish, ambitious purposes. Jezebel can operate through a man or woman and has three main modes of operation, the first being Gain and Maintain the Platform.

Through a political spirit, Jezebel attempts to manipulate leaders through flattery, favors or finances to gain favor. Once Jezebel shares a platform with legitimate authority, she abuses that platform to achieve her personal agenda. If this first mode of operation fails, Jezebel uses witchcraft in an attempt to Seduce and Reduce Leadership.

Through a seducing spirit, Jezebel often traps leaders through sexual sin. In the church, Jezebel operates through a religious spirit, sometimes posing as a prophet or prophetess to usurp spiritual authority. When leaders compromise morally or spiritually, guilt causes them to forfeit their spiritual authority, opening the door for Jezebel to take over. If these first two forms of manipulation will not work, Jezebel then aggressively plays the Blame and Shame Game.

Through a spirit of fear, Jezebel will use ridicule to demean and undermine or use intimidation to threaten and challenge legitimate leaders in an attempt to overthrow them (1 Sam. 15:23, Rev. 2:20).

While there are many legitimate reasons for the spiritually lukewarm condition of the church worldwide, one principal root cause is compromise in our pulpits. While some messengers have been deceived into becoming Mammonites, hedonists or narcissists, others have been seduced, intimidated or in some other way manipulated by Jezebel. Consequently, the gospel truth has been compromised. Prophetic messages on repentance, holiness, the fear of the Lord, travailing intercession, the burden of the Lord and the fellowship of Christ's sufferings have been exchanged for a self-centered gospel of prosperity and boundless grace.

In effect, many messengers have tickled the ears instead of touched the hearts of their congregants, heralding what members want to hear instead of what they need to hear. As a result, the church at large is complacent, unarmed, egocentric and ineffective. Without a doubt, in order for the church to be transformed into an energized, equipped, selfless and formidable army, we need a new order of messengers to emerge—an Elisha company.

While Elijah challenged and executed the 450 prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel, he feared Jezebel and therefore failed to confront her 400 prophets of Asherah. Three years later these 400 prophets counseled Israel's king to war against Syria—a war in which Israel was defeated and King Ahab was killed (I Kings 18:19; 22:6). Intimidated by Jezebel, Elijah ran for his life, prayed that he would die and resigned from his prophetic ministry. However, under the ministry of Elisha, Elijah's replacement, Jehu emerged to execute Jezebel and eradicate Baal worship in Israel.

In this Shemittah year, it is crucial that a bold, uncompromising order of messengers begin to emerge in the spirit of Elisha to preach repentance and an inspirational kingdom gospel that will catalyze a remnant. Only then can a Jehu army arise in the zeal of the Lord to violently throw down Jezebel—the prophet killer, and eradicate Baal worship throughout the world (2 Kings 9:30–10:28).

Father, raise up an Elisha company of messengers in this hour. Let them break off all chains of Jezebelic deception, manipulation, intimidation and compromise so that they might boldly preach prophetic, inspirational kingdom messages that cut to the heart. Use this new order of messengers to inspire and catalyze a Jehu army to arise and throw down Jezebel, in all of her expressions, throughout the world, in Jesus' name, amen.

Wrestling With Wicked Witchcraft—and Winning

It started a little later than usual, but spiritual witchcraft is rising—and rising rapidly—in South Florida this October. My community is home to a large population of witches, pagans, Wiccans and other heathens who practice one form of witchcraft or another. Your community may not have palm trees and beaches, but it's likely got a few witches, pagans, Wiccans and heathens practicing witchcraft.

A quick scan of the latest news reveals that reports of witchcraft-related child abuseare on the rise in London; two children were tortured and dumped on the streets over witchcraft in Akwa Ibom; a pastor who runs several churches in Kiambu and Meru was found practicing witchcraft; authorities have tied Texas drug smugglers to witchcraft, cartels and a house explosion; and seven people accused of witchcraft were burned to death in Tanzania.

When I first moved to South Florida, I battled Jezebel and her witchcrafts (see 2 Kings 9:22) with limited success for at least a year before I learned to discern the attack of this spiritual enemy at its onset, submit myself to God's Word, resist the devil and command it to flee in the name of Jesus (see James 4:7, AMP). Now, I am much quicker to sense witchcraft operating in the spirit, but sometimes witchcraft attacks in your sleep.

Witchcraft Dreams

Earlier this year, I wrote an article called When Jezebel's Witchcraft Keeps You Up at Night. I wrote it in March, which, along with October, is a prime time for witchcraft manifestations. In March, it has more to do with the spiritual climate that stems from false Mary worship. In October, it's more about the witches, pagans, Wiccans and heathens practicing witchcraft.

As I explained in my article earlier this year, the enemy has used a different tactic in 2014. Since the spiritual forces of darkness could not slow me down by day, the attacks are coming at night. I've started having what I call witchcraft dreams. A more complete way of explaining it would be to say I've experienced dream activity inspired by witchcraft rumbling in the spiritual climate.

While we watch kids dress up as witches and knock on doors asking for candy, bona fide witches are celebrating their holy day and Witches' Sabbath. October 21 is also Samhain, a Gaelic festival that marks the finale of harvest season and the start of winter. One Paganism/Wiccan expert explained, "It's a good time to contact the spirit world with a séance, because it's the time when the veil between this world and the next is at its thinnest."

Symptoms of Witchcraft

People who are especially sensitive to the spiritual realm can sense witchcraft in the atmosphere. As demonic activity increases, people report feelings of oppression, fatigue, strong spiritual warfare against the mind that makes you feel like quitting, and even physical manifestations for which doctors can't find a reason. Are you experiencing any of these things?

When witchcraft is particularly heavy in the spiritual climate, my eyes actually burn. Everything seems like a much bigger deal than it really is because witchcraft works to take your eyes off Jesus by magnifying the problem. The enemy can use people to release witchcraft against you through word curses, but this spiritual force seems to sometimes hang over your head like a dark cloud—unless you break it.

In my book, Satan's Deadly Trio: Defeating the Deceptions of Jezebel, Religion and Witchcraft, I write: "We need the gift of discernment to truly understand what we're battling. We can't effectively take authority over false authority in the name of Jesus if we can't discern what we're taking authority over. Sure, there are the generic 'I bind every spirit that is not of Christ, in the name of Jesus!' prayers but my experience tells me those will only take you so far in battle."

Combating Spiritual Witchcraft

Just because you are exhausted, feeling oppressed, are battling in your mind, or otherwise sense a struggle doesn't mean that you are necessarily battling witchcraft. You need the Holy Spirit to show you what is going on. That said, if it's October and you are consistently facing these symptoms—and specifically if you are having vivid nightmares suddenly—you should ask the Holy Spirit if witchcraft plays a role.

With nightmares and bad dreams, it could just be that you ate too much too late at night, that you are processing internal fears in your soul, that your subconscious mind is dredging up strong emotions from your past, or some other natural cause. However, it could also be spiritual witchcraft. If it is, what do you do?

I wrote more about this in a past article called Overcoming Witchcraft Attacks Against Your Mind and Body. If you are experiencing nightmares, I'd also suggest reading that and also remembering and confessing this: "You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day (Psalm 91:5). And this: 
"When you lie down, you will not be afraid; yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet" (Prov. 3:24).

Pray over yourself before you go to sleep—plead the blood of Jesus and command these spirits to cease their operations in the name of Jesus. And if you wake up with one of these bad dreams, do it again. The spiritual climate is intense for these next couple of weeks, but we are overcomers by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. Amen.

When Jezebel’s Witchcraft Keeps You Up at Night

Every year about this time there’s an onslaught of witchcraft attacks against me—and many people I know. This year the enemy used a different tactic. Since the spiritual forces of darkness could not slow me down by day, the attacks are coming at night.

First, let me explain what I mean by witchcraft. During Lent, some people have a tendency to exalt Mary, the mother of Jesus. But we know that's not God's will. God has "highly exalted Jesus and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee must bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that He is Lord, to the glory of the Father" (Phil 2:9-11). Let me be clear: I am not Catholic-bashing here. This is not about a religion or a denomination. It's about spiritual practices in which some are engaging.

Where Mary is exalted, I believe it empowers the spirit of Jezebel and her witchcrafts. Some people in some religions refer to Mary as the queen of heaven. But Ashtoreth, the chief pagan goddess of war and sex mentioned in the Old Testament, is also known as the queen of heaven. And it’s the Ashtoreth spirit that’s behind Jezebel. The Lord speaks of the queen of heaven in Jeremiah 7, noting that the people of Judah were giving offerings to other gods and provoking Him to anger. The Old Testament Jezebel’s father, Ethbal, was the high priest of the goddess.

What Witchcraft Feels Like

This year, witchcraft couldn’t get me by day. I was ready for the onslaught. So instead, witchcraft attacked me at night—in my sleep. I have had some of the worst nightmares in the last two weeks that I’ve ever had in my entire life. Things I won’t even speak out loud because the power of death and life is in the tongue. Indeed, the enemy wants me to speak out the disturbing pictures he offered to give them life. But I refuse. And I break that assignment in the name of Jesus!

What’s more, I’m waking up to especially nasty messages via email. Although it’s not unusual to get a nasty message, the religious spirits have come out in droves to attack—out of the blue. They are releasing shame upon me, making false accusations and otherwise releasing word curses over my life. I bind them in the name of Jesus, bless those who curse me, and move on. 

Pushing Back Powers of Darkness

Of course, these witchcraft nightmares left me exhausted. Don’t you know it’s so much more difficult to work with one hand and battle with the other when you are physically exhausted? And to wake up to a string of email attacks from the religious spirit starts your day focusing on the wrong thing if you let it.

And if you let it, it’s all downhill from there. The devil wants your thoughts and words because then he can sway your actions. Thankfully, I discerned what was going on, and I’m changing my battle plans. I've spent many, many hours in worship and prayer seeking revelation on how I can better gird up the loins of my mind.

Always remember, we aren’t wrestling against flesh and blood, yet we do need to put on our whole armor and engage in the battle. Passivity isn’t going to deliver you from Jezebel’s witchcraft.

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled” (2 Cor. 10:3-6).

When it comes to witchcraft, we have to withstand it. The Amplified Bible says to “be firm in faith [against his onset—rooted, established, strong, immovable, and determined]” (1 Pet. 5:9). It’s easy enough to give in to witchcraft, especially if you don’t know what is attacking you. So again, when you feel like giving up, when you feel tired for no reason, when you have strong confusion, when you are fighting an intense battle in your mind and when infirmities are manifesting, it could be witchcraft. Resist it at its onset. Cast it off. Submit yourself to God. "Resist the devil [stand firm against him], and he will flee from you" (James 4:7, AMP).

Again, submit yourself to the lordship of Christ. Exalt His name. Thank Him for His blood. Rejoice in the Lord. Praise and worship carry breakthrough. That’s often all it takes to change the spiritual climate in your home. And worship is where we should start because He is worthy of our adoration.

If worship doesn’t break the witchcraft, take authority over it in the name above all names. Witchcraft has to bow at the name of Jesus. But make sure you don’t have any common ground with the enemy. Repent for any rebellion in your heart, and surrender your will anew to God. Remember, we are more than conquerors in Christ, and no weapon formed against us can prosper—not even witchcraft. Our job is to be spiritually discerning enough to catch the devil at his onset, resist him, rebuke him and praise God for the victory. Amen.

February 22, 2014 - Prophetic Alert The Spirit of God says, My people have cried.  My people have cried out for an answer and this is what I have to say, says the Spirit of Life.  A veil has been placed upon this nation and I did it.  I did it so that for a season My people would wonder and faith would increase, for in darkness faith grows.  In despair, faith grows.  I did it.   But now, My fury has ended.  Hear Me, for I have found a man after My own heart.  I have found a man after My own heart and he is amongst you.  He is one of the brothers but singled out for Presidency of the United States of America.  But hear the transcription of God upon the heart of His prophet – how the gold has become dim, the stones of the sanctuary are scattered at the head of every street.   The precious sons of Zion, valuable as fine gold, are now regarded as clay pots and those who ate delicacies are desolate in the streets and those who were brought up in royal scarlet now embrace ash heaps.  Is this what I wanted?  My people were brighter than snow, whiter than milk.  They were like sapphire in their appearance and now they are stricken for lack of fruits in the field.  The hands of once compassionate women have cooked their own children and their children have become food for them.  Your children have become food for who were once compassionate women.  But My fury is fulfilled, says the Lord, and I have now kindled a fire in Zion.  I have kindled a fire in Zion, in America, in nations throughout the earth, and My fist is about to smack down on Russia, for out of the rebellion of the Ukraine, which was seen by My prophet, shall come out of those ashes, beauty – shall come out of that sadness, joy – shall come out of those garments, praise, says the Lord. I have searched for a man and a woman who would stand in the Oval Office and pray and call for the restoration of the fortunes of Zion.  I have looked for a man who would pray for the restoration of the fortunes of Zion.  Therefore, if you hear My heart, says the Lord today, I will take you on a journey.  I will first take you to Israel, whom they would give Jerusalem to his enemies.  Why would they give half of Jerusalem away?   This will not happen, says the Lord, for I will take you on a journey today into Jerusalem, where it shall be prophesied through song by My prophet what I intend doing in Jerusalem and in the United States of America at the same time, says the Lord. I am restoring the fortunes of Zion.  I am restoring the fortunes that were the inheritance of My people.   I am restoring the fortunes of those that are the elect of God and have been stolen from.  You shall eat your delicacies again and your children will no longer be your food.  You shall not use them and take them out of the womb anymore, says the Lord.  Watch how I change everything, for there shall be those who are in justice.   There are those who are in a strong position – I’m just hearing this now – in the highest court in the land – the Supreme Court.  Two shall step down for the embarrassment of what shall take place for I wish to place in the highest court in the land, righteousness.  And they shall attempt to put others in to endeavor, to reach their endeavors, but God says, hear Me tonight.  Hear Me today – I have this whole thing planned out according to My will for it is now time for Me to restore the fortunes of Zion – the fortunes to those that had it once, you are going to get it back.  This is My promise, says the Lord of Hosts. Let us go to Israel.  Let us now go to Israel.  Let us go to Israel, where there is a single woman crying out and praying for the peace, for the prosperity of her land.  Listen to her as she prays out, for this is happening now and I am hearing her prayer from the hills outside of Jerusalem.  This is actually happening in the Spirit.  (Hannah sings) This man has stood in Jerusalem.  This man that I saw in the vision, a man that came out of a vision, please hear me.  I was standing in my garden.  Suddenly the Spirit came and removed from my eyes, scales. I was praying for America and I was praying for Israel – nothing unusual.   Suddenly behind me, starting behind my back, going in the form of an arrow, were hundreds of thousands of people.  And I turned around and I was stunned at what I saw.  This was not just a mere dream, but this was a vision.  And so I raised my hand like this and every one of them raised their hands.  I looked back and they were doing the same thing.  I shouted and they all shouted.   They were one; they were one; one party, one party of people.  It continued until I realized that in the unity of these, amongst them stood one that God had set aside to be the leader of this nation.  I said why am I hearing this so soon?  Surely You would show me a little bit of it closer to the time.  And the Spirit of God said to me, this man has a humble stature but he is a genius.  And then I heard “gold.”  I wasn’t sure if this was attached to his name, but He said to me, he will restore the fortunes in this nation because of his brilliance.  I couldn’t quite see his face because that was not allowed because there was a mist that covered all the people and he was amongst them.   And the Spirit of God made me look at him, and He said, this man will throttle the enemies of Israel.  This man will throttle the enemies of the West, and there are highly embarrassing moments that are about to occur for many, many politicians in this nation.  There will be a shaking amongst the Democrats in the upcoming elections, but unsettling for the Republicans.   Why is God doing this? For God said, I am dissatisfied with what emerges from both parties.   And then there is a nation, He showed me, He took me, itching for a new kind of war with America.  They will shout, “Impeach, impeach,” they say, but nay.  This nation shall come very subtly but he shall not come in the time of President Obama.  They shall come when this new one arises, My David that I have set aside for this nation – a man of prayer, a man of choice words, not a man who is verbose, who has verbosity, who speaks too much.   They will even say, “This man is not speaking enough,” but God says, I have set him aside.  They will shout, “Impeach, impeach,” but this shall not happen, and then, God says, highly embarrassing moments when another Snowden arises and people will become very afraid.   They’ll say "we have no protection" and then God says, am I impressed with your weapons of war?  Am I impressed with the strength of your men’s legs?  Ha!  I have said I will bring this nation to its knees, and God said, you have been humbled, and yet some more, and then you shall hear the sounds of great victory.  For where are the people gathered?  Where are My people gathered?  Where is the sound of unity from My people?  In this next week, this man shall begin to emerge, and in the following two weeks, which is a three-week period, he shall slowly come to the fore.  For they are saying, "how do we kill the giant? How do we kill the giant of debt?  How do we kill the giant of socialism?  How do we kill the giant of human secularism?"  I have placed that man amongst you, a humble man.  And as Samuel stood before the brothers, and they had rejected David to come because of his age – take all these little remarks I’m giving you – they are gems.  The name and the word “gold” – remember that.  A man that is amongst them but is young.   And God says, these that shall reject him shall be shocked at how he takes the giant down.  Now hear me please.  The giant of debt, the giants that have come, the brothers of Goliath, stand in glee watching America.  “We will cripple you.  You will lose your credit.”   But God said, watch, I said 20,000.  Look not to Wall Street; however, observe.  And they shall say, "what is your plan for this giant?" And he will take a simple stone (remember the name) and he will hold it up and they will laugh at him, but the plan is so brilliant, says the Lord.  It could only have been given by Me. California, you are dying because of a drought.  Watch My sign, watch the sign of rain for I told you there would be severe wind from above and all the states that are affected by this severe weather have been set up for a shaking of My Spirit and an outpouring of My Spirit, but California, I am looking at you.   Gold – stone – California and small of stature, and God says, once you recognize the man that I have raised up, pray, for the enemy will do everything in his power to put a witch in the White House.  Did anybody hear what He just said?  For Jezebel has chased away the prophets and even Elijah.   Now I have said, go back, for this shall be dismantled so that there will be no more corruption in the White House, says the Spirit. America, freedom is yours in the Spirit!  Israel, freedom to reign - America, righteous judgment and a great shaking of the Spirit in America! The Spirit of God says, one more thing I want to talk to you about – that little dwarf in North Korea.  I’m getting a little tired of him. I think I’m going to go and pay him a visit, says the Lord.  You watch and see what I do and that will be a big sign that the man that I’m sending with the stone for the giant is emerging, says the Lord.

At first, I thought it was New Age culture. But I was wrong. It was occultism.

As I strolled through the streets of Key West on a 24-hour getaway with my daughter, I noticed something that I had never witnessed in Key West before: Occultism seems fully woven through the culture.

I’ve been going to Key West for more than 20 years and have spent weeks at a time on the tropical island. But something disturbing had happened in the 10 years since I last visited—and it’s merely a microcosm of what’s happening in the world today.

You can no longer walk down Duval Street—the famous drag of shops and restaurants—without running into the likes of Mahadeo Jerrybandhan, a renowned “peerless palmist” from Trinidad with a long white beard and an even longer white robe. But Jerrybandhan is not alone. He has plenty of peers in Key West, from psychics to mediums to channels to healers to tarot card readers to astrologers. The only group I didn’t find down there were the crystal readers.

Then there’s “Robert the Doll.” Key West profiteers have designed so-called ghost tours that explore the haunted history of Key West, including old wooden houses where spirits purportedly walk. Tour guides will tell you that Key West is one of the most haunted cities in the world with elevated paranormal activity. A local voodooistic icon, Robert the Doll will supposedly curse you if you take his picture without permission or forget to thank him for the privilege.

The Abomination of Occultism

As you can imagine, seeing all this grieved my spirit. But I should not have been so surprised. Occultism has been slowly creeping into American culture for decades as movie makers exalt witchcraft and vampires while the music industry pumps occult rock. Beloved, we are in the midst of a great spiritual crisis even now. Our literature, music, video games, comics, films and television shows are full of mysticism and the occult. Some of it is subtle. Some of it is blatant. All of it is wicked.

Again, this is nothing new. Occultism—which broadly includes magic, séances, channeling, hypnosis, necromancy, astrology, extra-sensory perception, alchemy, spiritualism and divination—is strongly condemned in the Bible.

“There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire [which is an ancient occult practice], or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord” (Deut. 18:10-12).

The Lord rebuked Israel for practicing astrology (Is. 47:10-14). Jezebel practiced witchcraft (2 Kings 9:22) and we know how that ended. Ephesus was known for a population that practiced magic arts (Acts 19:19). And the book of Revelation makes it clear that “the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death” (Rev. 21:8).

Kabbalah, Kundalini and Jezebel

And yet we see occult practices, like Kabbalah, gaining momentum in the church. We see "prophetic words" delivered in what appears to be Kundalini fashion, with violent shaking and demonic tongues against a backdrop of tribal bongos that set the congregation into hysteria. We see a Jezebel spirit working to seduce saints into idolatry and sexual immorality—and oftentimes succeeding. We see all sorts of strong delusion and strange fire with occultic ties in the modern church.

But we should not be surprised. The rise of occultism is a sign of the end times. Satan’s plan is to fascinate our hearts with occult power and deceive us. The Holy Spirit, meanwhile, wants to fascinate our spirits with a revelation of the Son of God. I believe God’s people are enticed by occultism when they begin seeking spiritual experiences above seeking God. It’s a subtle—and dangerous—shift. Many Christians are on fire for God, but that fire can suddenly turn strange if we are not rooted in the Word. If we seek supernatural experiences, we will find them—but they don’t always come from Jesus.

Beloved, we must not play with strange fire. Ultimately, the occult leads to murder and mayhem—immorality of all kinds. It’s not likely that you would ever willfully visit the likes of Mahadeo Jerrybandhan, the peerless palmist—or any of his peers. But could you ignorantly be engaged with occultic practices that are opening the door to deceptive dangers? Could it be coming from what appears to be godly influences—even within church culture?

Discernment or Deception?

Don’t brush the question off before praying about it. If you want the truth, the Holy Spirit will lead you and guide you into all truth. Please hear me! Even a little occult is a deadly poison—a little leaven leavens the whole lump. The Bible warns about deceptive teachers, false apostles and deceitful workers. The Bible warns about self-deception. And it’s your responsibility to keep your heart pure. If you've stepped into this demonic ditch, repent now and warn others.

Friends, we’re in an end-times war with eternal consequences. Satan is using the occult to seduce people away from the kingdom of God to dance in the kingdom of darkness. I pray that the Lord gives you discernment and awakens your spirit, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming (Matt. 24:42).

Let me leave you with a warning from the apostle Paul: “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ” (Col. 2:8). Amen.
