Poll: Israelis Want to Reduce Dependence on US - Israel Today

Poll: Israelis Want to Reduce Dependence on US

Wednesday, December 04, 2013 |  Israel Today Staff
Nearly half of Israelis believe it is time to reduce their nation's dependence on America and seek new allies, according to the latest edition of a monthly poll conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute.
While 71 percent of those polled labeled America as Israel's truest ally, a 49 percent plurality said it was time to find a new national benefactor, though less than 30 percent believed Israel would be successful on that front.
Most Israelis view America as a diminishing ally for two reasons:
  1. The Obama Administration is viewed as overtly hostile toward the Jewish state, a perception only enhanced by Secretary of State John Kerry's recent remarks that Israeli concerns over Iran's nuclear deal were secondary to America's agenda; and
  2. Washington's failure to correctly gauge the "Arab Spring," punish the Assad regime for using chemical weapons against Syrians, and leverage economic sanctions to bring an actual end to Iran's nuclear program make America look weak in the Middle East.

Over the past year, Israel has been seen cozying up to Russia, which has been all too happy to fill the void left by America, not only in Israel, but around the region.
Israel has also boosted relations with China of late, sending several delegations aimed at involving Beijing more directly in the Middle East peace process.
Burgeoning Israel-China relations and cooperation on diplomatic issues like defensible borders is all discussed in greater depth in the upcoming issue of Israel Today Magazine.

Netanyahu Challenges the Pope - Israel Today

Netanyahu Challenges the Pope

Wednesday, December 04, 2013 |  David Lazarus
What was Netanyahu thinking this week when on an official visit to the Vatican he presented the Pope with a book his father wrote about the Inquisition? Doesn’t he understand that proper edicate requires presenting expensive gifts? Was it such a good idea on their first meeting to give the newly-seated Pontiff a $42 book reminding him of the Church’s torture and destruction of the Spanish Jews?
Netanyahu’s father, Ben Zion Netanyahu, wrote the hotly debated book “Origins of the Inquisition in Fifteenth Century Spain” in 1995. Netanyahu’s history of the Inquisition was so controversial that an April 2012 obituary in the New York Times highlighted his perspective of the notorious destruction of Spain’s Jewish community. From the Times:
"As a historian, Mr. Netanyahu reinterpreted the Inquisition in 'The Origins of the Inquisition in Fifteenth Century Spain' (1995). The predominant view had been that Jews were persecuted for secretly practicing their religion after pretending to convert to Roman Catholicism. Mr. Netanyahu, in 1,384 pages, offered evidence that most Jews in Spain had willingly become Catholics and were enthusiastic about their new religion.
"Jews were persecuted, he concluded — many of them burned at the stake — for being perceived as an evil race rather than for anything they believed or had done. Jealousy over Jews' success in the economy and at the royal court only fueled the oppression, he wrote. The book traced what he called 'Jew-hatred' to ancient Egypt, long before Christianity."
Netanyahu is arguing in his book that it was not religion per se that initiated the brutal massacre of Jews, but rather an inherent "Jew-hatred." While the Church must certainly be held responsible for her role in the many atrocities against the Jews, the book which his son presented to the Pope this week tries to show that the roots of anti-Semitism run far deeper than Church doctrine.
In recent years the Church has made significant strides in reconciling itself with the Jewish people. Christian and Jewish dialogue is improving. The violent and unmitigated anti-Semitism of the past is in recession in the Church. The new Pope inviting Netanyahu to the Vatican is clearly another step in pursuing friendly relations with Israel.
But giving the Pope his father’s book was not only conciliatory. With all these positive moves in the right direction, radical anti-Semitism continues to be on the rise, especially across Europe. A recent survey by the European Agency for Fundamental Rights concluded that one quarter of all European Jews are afraid to publicly identify themselves as Jewish.
Like father like son, Prime Minister Netanyahu wants people to realize, and the new head of an estimated 1.2 billion Catholics to understand, that modern, radical and secular anti-Semitism is still very much alive, with or without Church involvement. More than that, the book now in the Pope’s hands ought to stir him and his Church beyond mere reconciliation toward active participation in the struggle against anti-Semitism.

Ahava Love - Jerusalem Joy

Published on Dec 3, 2013

Jerusalem (Yerusaliyim), the capital of Israel, is a great place to go. Having been there over 10 times, I wanted to share this musical photo piece of artwork, mostly painted by Alex Levin of Tel Aviv. His website is at:  http://www.artlevin.com/

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

“Miracles Occur” - Ahava Love Letter (Steve Martin)

           “Miracles Occur”

Peter said, “I don’t have a nickel to my name, but what I do have, I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk!” He grabbed him by the right hand and pulled him up. In an instant his feet and ankles became firm. He jumped to his feet and walked.
(Acts 3:6-8, The Message)

Dear family of friends,

Checking Facebook to get an update on a friend’s situation, I saw her last post describing the current status. Cancer had been attacking her body. She and her husband had no insurance. Both were out of a job. They were in the process of having to sell their house. The doctor and the insurance company said it was going to cost thousands to do what they could. They didn't have the money.

My heart was filled with sorrow and compassion, while at the same time not knowing what we ourselves could do to help them.

Facing situations that are overwhelming come along in our lives. Sometimes they are devastating. They just happen, for we live in a mortal body, in a temporaral state. It is almost like death would be better than to go through what we think will happen, if nothing better will seem to happen. Or we hear only what the “professionals” are telling us will result.

In times like these, the one thing I know to do is pray. Pray for a word from the Lord. Pray for courage for them to walk through it. Pray for something to happen that will let them know, “It will be all right.”

Pray in tongues, for the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity, the Ruach HaKodesh (Hebrew), does know.

And so I did. I cried out to the Lord from my heart, asking Him to intervene in their situation. “Please do something, Lord,” was the prayer in my mind, as I continued praying in tongues.

Then He spoke quietly, relating His response to the season we were in, “Hanukkah was a miracle. Christmas was a miracle. I AM their miracle.”

Yes you are Lord! You are the miracle, our answer for everything we face! For them now!

When we face the brick wall, the edge of the cliff, the point where, “Lord, if YOU don’t do something, I am not going to make it!” - our hope, faith and assurance must rest in Him, for He is the Giver of Life, and knows what we need, when we need it.

“…and a large crowd followed him, because they had seen the miracles He had performed on the sick. John 6:2, Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)

Jesus (Yeshua) performs miracles. He did then. He does now. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Believe Him.

Ahava to my family of friends,

Paul Walker Was a True Gem According to Jewelry Store Clerk

Paul Walker Was a True Gem According to Jewelry Store Clerk

Paul Walker was best known for his action-packed films, but many are remembering the late actor, who died on Saturday in a fiery car crash, as a big softie with a huge heart.

During the holiday season several years ago, the "Fast & Furious" actor walked into Bailey Banks and Biddle Jewelers in Santa Barbara, California, and, according to sales associate Irene King, what happened next was practically out of a feel-good Hollywood movie.
King told CBS Los Angeles that an associate nudged her and said, “There’s Paul Walker.”

“Oh, OK, yeah,” King replied with a smile. “I said, ‘Yeah, he’s a nice-looking man.’”

Walker was browsing for bling at the same time as a soldier who had just finished his first tour of duty in Iraq, and was looking at engagement rings with his fiancée.

According to King, the pair saw a ring set they liked, but it was way too expensive and boasted a hefty $10,000 price tag.

In comes Walker. The blue-eyed actor called the store's manager and told him to put the ring that the couple was looking at "on his tab," but to keep his identity hidden. He promptly walked out of the store. According to King, the store never told the couple that Walker was the man behind the purchase, and nobody ever knew the sweet story until now.

King posted the story on the 40-year-old actor's Facebook page, among thousands of other anecdotes where people remembered him as "generous," "loving," and with a "heart of pure gold." Walker was a dedicated supporter of charities like the Billfish Foundation, and could always be counted on to raise funds for those in need. He founded his own organization, Reach Out Worldwide, after the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

"To do something like that to a perfect stranger is just unbelievable,” King said.

In this case, it appears that Paul Walker's generosity shined brighter than any diamond.

Paul Walker - "I'm a Christian now...Who couldn't believe there's a God?"

Paul Walker on Christian Faith: 'Who Couldn't Believe There's a God?'

Actors (L-R) Paul Walker, Vin Diesel and Tyrese Gibson pose at the
world premiere of "Fast Five" at the Cinepolis Lagoon theatre in
Rio de Janeiro April 15, 2011. The movie, the fifth in the Fast and Furious
film series, opens in theaters on April 29.
Paul Walker, 40, will best be remembered by the public as the blond-haired, speed-loving, tough guy with a swagger Brian O'Conner of the successful "Fast & Furious" movie franchise. But less known is that Walker, who died in a tragic and fiery car crash on Saturday, was a Christian and had grown up in the Mormon Church.
Walker was born on Sept. 12, 1973, in Glendale, Calif., and was raised up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but he graduated from Village Christian School in Sun Valley, Calif.
"I'm a Christian now. The things that drove me crazy growing up was how everyone works at fault-finding with different religions. The people I don't understand are atheists. I go surfing and snow boarding and I'm always around nature. I look at everything and think, 'Who couldn't believe there's a God? Is all this a mistake?' It just blows me away," Walker was quoted as saying by IMDb.
The late actor was a non-denominational Christian who in a GQ UK magazine interview talked about how his Christian education and Mormon background influenced his thinking about family.
"It's so funny, my daughter now lives with me full time and my original plan was to work up until I was 40 then reassess my life, even go in a completely different direction with things," Walker had told GQ in an August 2013 interview. "I thought at this point in my life I would need to be home with her (16-year-old Meadow Rain Walker), but she wants me to keep acting so she can travel around the world with me. Would that be so bad?
"Thing is, I went to a born-again Christian high school, was brought up in a traditional Mormon family where these ideas about parenting are of structure and sacrifice. To think outside of that idea of family and parenting that I've grown up with is tough, but also very freeing."
In the same interview, the journalist asked Walker what he hoped to achieve before he died. And Walker responded by talking about his previous experience being part of the National Geographic Channel series "Expedition Great White" where he was part of a crew that caught and tagged great white sharks off the coast of Mexico. Walker majored in marine biology in college and was a great enthusiast of all things related to the ocean, including surfing.
"To now be going on an expedition with National Geographic? Are you kidding me?! Where are we going? It's just one of those opportunities I had to seize," Walker had exclaimed to GQ.
Walker died in a car crash in Santa Clarita, Calif., on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. PT, while riding as a passenger in his friend's Porsche. His friend who was driving also died.
"When they arrived, deputies found the vehicle engulfed in flames," the local police said in a statement. "The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded, extinguished the fire and subsequently located two victims inside the vehicle. The victims were pronounced dead on the scene."
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.
A statement on Walker's official Twitter account said that he was attending a charity event Saturday afternoon for his non-profit, Reach Out Worldwide, that would benefit Filipino victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
Universal Pictures, which is behind the "Fast & Furious" franchise, released the following statement: "All of us at Universal are heartbroken. Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the 'Fast and Furious' films, and to countless fans. We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Paul's family."
Walker was scheduled to star in the seventh installation of the "Fast & Furious" franchise, which was slated for release in July 2014. It is unclear how the seventh "Fast & Furious" movie will manage after losing one of its biggest stars that has been in six of the seven films.
