The Aliya movements -- encouraging young Jewish Zionists to move to Palestine -- were launched when the Turks ruled Palestine, but immigration increased after the British captured the land in 1917-1918.  The stream of Jews escaping an increasingly hostile Europe became a fast-flowing river until 1939, when Britain shut the gates.

The young, often secular, Jews were usually not attracted to the seminaries of Jerusalem or Bnai Brak.  They were drawn by the socialist dreams of the kibbutz, moshav, and workers industrial cooperatives.  Universities were established, factories were built, and large tracts of land were purchased and cleared for agriculture.

Into this socialist and egalitarian society women were welcomed.

In this Part II of the Salute to the Women of Israel, we present the "New Yishuv's" women and their contribution to the formation of Israel through agriculture, industry and political activism.

Women protest the British White Paper (1939)
In 1939, the British government, headed by Neville Chamberlain, issued the "MacDonald White Paper," a policy paper which called for the establishment of a single Palestine state governed by Arabs and Jews based on their respective populations.

The White Paper was approved by the British Parliament in May 1939, thus signing the death sentences of millions of Jews precisely when the Nazi tide was threatening to engulf Europe.

In May 1939, the American Colony film team photographed a protest by the women of theYishuv, led by some of the leading women figures in Jerusalem at the time: Ita Yellin, Rachel Yanait Ben-Zvi, and Sarah Herzog.

Egypt Christians Expecting Death Any Time'

Egypt 'Christians Expecting

Death Any Time'

George Thomas, Senior Reporter  CBN News May 1, 2014

DELGA, Egypt -- On August 20, 2013 in the small village of Delga, four hours south of Cairo, Egypt, thousands of radical Muslims went on a rampage.

"We were at work when we heard Muslims were burning churches," Boutrous, a Christian living in Delga at the time, said. Boutrous's real name was not given for security purposes.

"Leaders in the mosques were telling Muslims to attack Christians and kill them," he said.

Boutrous and his father Iskander, both Christians, were in their family barber shop when a mob of Muslims attacked them.

"They broke into the shop, took everything and burned the place down," Boutrous said.

Caught on Tape

Boutrous managed to escape, but his father wasn't so fortunate.

"They caught my father and shot him multiple times. Then they dragged his body to the mosque," Boutrous said.

That afternoon, someone with a cell phone recorded a video of Boutrous' father's body, riddled with bullets, being dragged through the streets.

"When they reached the mosque they tied his body to a tractor and dragged him through the village again."

The mob continued to mutilate his father's body while chanting 'Allahu Akbar,' Arabic for 'god is great.'

He was buried hours later in a nearby cemetery.

"The next day some people dug up his body and dragged it through the village again. They did this three times that day," Boutrous said.

Boutrous and his family have since escaped from Delga.

"We have no money, no clothes, no job, our home is destroyed, and our business is destroyed," he said.

Expect Death at Any Time

Delga is part of the Minya province, center of the worst violence against Christians in seven centuries.

Anba Macarius is head bishop of Minya's Coptic Church.

"Three hundred homes, 100 businesses, 15 churches and about 10 Christian organizations were destroyed in my province," he said from his parish in Minya Province, home to the largest number of Christians in Egypt.

Macarius said the killing and arson attacks happened because Christians supported the removal of former Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood government.

Since then, more than 100 churches and hundreds of homes and businesses have been destroyed. The government says it will try to rebuild all the places of worship.

But the big question remains: What about those who have lost everything, their livelihood and their homes?

"Christians in Egypt are expecting death at any time," Macarius said.

And he should know. Days before the interview with CBN News, Macarius was the target of an assassination attempt. Driving through a town in Minya province, gunmen began firing at his car.

"I thank the Lord I am still alive but I am like anybody else in Minya, we all face dangers. My life is not more precious than any other soul in Minya," Macarius said.

Forty-Eight Hours of Death

Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt's 80 million population. They face daily harassment nearly a year after Morsi's ouster and the government's crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood.

Joseph has had firsthand experience. His identity has been concealed for security reasons. He was abducted late last year by seven gunmen and tortured for two days.

"They put a gun to my head and in my mouth. I started to pray, 'Lord my life is in your hands and I am ready to go when my time is up,'" he said.

"I call them the 48 hours of death. No food, no water, no light, no sleeping. I was blindfolded that entire time and they kept beating me, punching me in the face, on my shoulder and on my back," he said.

The kidnappers routinely target Christians.

"I asked one of the kidnappers, 'Why do you just kidnap Christians?' And he said, 'Christians are weak, they don't retaliate with violence and they have money,'" Joseph said.

The men initially demanded a $80,000 ransom. After hours of negotiations, they settled on $43,000.

Still, it was a huge sum that Joseph said his family could not afford to pay. That's when friends from his church stepped in.

"I had some money in savings, but the rest of the ransom money came from church members. I cannot thank them enough for saving my life," Joseph said.

Modern Day Christian Exodus

Bishop Macarius said the security conditions have led several hundred Christian families to consider leaving Minya, but he encourages them to stay.

"We are telling the church that they must endure the persecution. We must consider it an honor to endure this persecution otherwise it will contradict the level of our commitment to our faith."

Egypt will hold presidential elections later in May. Joseph is praying Egypt's Christians will see better days.

"The Muslim Brotherhood's time in office almost destroyed our country but we are thankful they never had the opportunity to finish their term. Now it will take some time to secure our country," Joseph said.

Boutros and his family are still hiding in an undisclosed location, but hope to one day go back home to Delga.

"Christians view the current situation as an opportunity to witness about Christ through our suffering," he said. "We have to be tolerant and keep praying for our enemies."

Today's Israel Inspiration

Israel’s Independence Day, which falls next Tuesday, is always preceded by Yom Hazikaron, a Memorial Day for the fallen soldiers. The reason for connecting these two days is very clear: Israelis owe their independence to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for it. In honor of these upcoming holidays, support the LIBI Fund, the official fund of the IDF, and you'll receive an Israeli flag pin!

IDF Hatikva at the Western Wall

Israel's national anthem is sung by an IDF cantor at a beautiful Western Wall ceremony. The song reflects the nearly 2000-year-old hope of the Jewish people to return to the Land of Israel—their ancient homeland.

A Birthday Wish for the IDF

Leah Weinberger recently celebrated a milestone birthday, but instead of throwing a party and receiving gifts from close friends and family she did something extraordinary. She paid it forward to help the IDF.

What is the National Day of Prayer?
The National Day of Prayer was established as an annual event in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. The observance of the National Day of Prayer is founded on the constitutional rights of freedom of speech and freedom of religion and can be celebrated by all Americans.
What is the National Day of Prayer Task Force and what is its purpose?
The National Day of Prayer Task Force concentrates on the need to pray for the well-being of America and for those in leadership on all levels of national, church and educational areas of influence. The National Day of Prayer is observed annually on the first Thursday of May.
When did the National Day of Prayer begin?
Days of prayer have been called for since 1775, when the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln called for such a day. Officially, the NDP was established as an annual event by an act of Congress in 1952 and was signed into law by President Truman. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the NDP.
Is the National Day of Prayer exclusively a Christian event?
No. This government-proclaimed day is offered to all Americans, regardless of religion, to celebrate their faith through prayer. However, the efforts of the NDP Task Force are executed specifically in accordance with its Judeo-Christian beliefs.
Is the National Day of Prayer a political event?
No. The National Day of Prayer, as designated by our government, belongs to all Americans. It is not sponsored or owned by any one group. Every American can observe the NDP in his or her own way. Each year, the President issues a proclamation in support of this significant day.
Who is behind the National Day of Prayer Task Force?
The Chairman is Mrs. Shirley Dobson, who has held the position since 1991. Mrs. Dobson volunteers her time and does not receive a salary. The NDP Task Force consists of a full-time staff and a network of thousands of grassroots volunteers nationwide. Mr. John Bornschein serves as the Vice Chairman and Executive Director. Prior to Mrs. Dobson’s involvement, the Task Force was led by Mrs. Vonette Bright, wife of former Campus Crusade for Christ president and founder Bill Bright.
Is the Task Force affiliated with Focus on the Family or Family Talk?
No. Though Mrs. Dobson is married to Focus on the Family and Family Talk founder Dr. James Dobson, the NDP Task Force is a separate organization. It was housed at the Focus on the Family headquarters from 1991 to 2009 and is currently located at an independent office in Colorado Springs, CO. Its business affairs have always remained separate and Focus on the Family was compensated for services rendered. However, between 1991 and 1993, Focus on the Family did provide grants in support of the NDP Task Force. Since then, the Task Force has been completely self-supported.
What kinds of events are planned?
The most visible gathering has been held historically at our nation’s Capitol in Washington, D.C. on the first Thursday of May. The executive, legislative and judicial branches of government are represented, as well as the military. In addition, Christian leaders address the current year’s theme and other areas of interest (i.e. education, youth, families, etc.). Every year, tens of thousands of events are held nationwide. Local volunteers hold a variety of activities ranging from prayer breakfasts, Bible reading marathons, concerts of prayer, rallies, church prayer vigils, student flagpole gatherings and observances held in sports stadiums.

Here's Why Not to Give Up

Sometimes we feel foolish dreaming the sorts of dreams God puts in our hearts. Our truest dreams always look too big for us.

We may be afraid of how bizarre we will look trying to achieve them. We might start out trying to paddle a kayak alone to islands many miles away only to find the task much harder than we ever knew. Nonetheless, we can be confident that He who began a good work in us will bring it to completion (Phil. 1:6).

Scripture says Paul prayed for the church to have patience and endurance (Col. 1:11). Sometimes we give up too quickly. I might have given up when my kayak idea turned out to be laughably inadequate. I might have given up when our first real boat sunk and we found ourselves shipwrecked.

Never mind the boats - I might have given up on Mozambique in general many times before that. I might have given up when people shot at me or when gangs were chasing me. I might have given up when we were in deep psychological distress after friends of ours in the Congo were dismembered with machetes in a church. I might have given up when I was reported in the newspapers as a drug dealer because of mistaken results at a lab, where they were testing some vitamins that were donated to us. I might have given up on the fifth, sixth or seventh occasion when crowds began to stone me for preaching about Jesus.

Most especially, I might have given up when my husband, Rolland, got cerebral malaria and suffered a series of microstrokes that almost killed him. Though he was eventually healed, for two years he lost his short-term memory and was totally unable to function in ministry or administration.

The only reason I did not give up any of these times was because I know the One who placed His promises within me. When you know Him intimately, you never give up, because He is worthy!

Being Overshadowed by God

You have to wait a long time for some promises. I was 16 when the Lord told me I had a destiny in Africa, Asia and England. It took me over 20 years before I reached Mozambique and began to step into that piece of my calling.

Truthfully, I am being overshadowed more now than I have ever been before. At times it is still very uncomfortable. There are days when I feel terribly stretched as God's promises grow within me, but even those days are a joy because I long to birth what God has given me.

Continue to carry your promises faithfully. Nurture them as they grow. It does not matter how old you are. It is never too late. The Lord wants to take you beyond who you are and what you can do. God is the One who can take a barren woman in her old age and make her fruitful for the first time, just as the angel told Mary: "Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail" (Luke 1:36-37, NIV).

Two things will come from being overshadowed. The first is a particular promise from God that is naturally impossible to fulfill. The second is a general promise from God that nothing is impossible with Him.

Our God is the God of the impossible. He can take a barren ministry and breathe His Spirit into it. Even in your old age, He can breathe over you and cause you to bear a ministry, a promise or a revelation - a beautiful gift that will carry His glory to the ends of the earth. He can take the most barren and broken life - even the kind of life that has aborted its own promises many times - and in it plant a glorious new promise, along with all the strength needed to carry it to full term.

We have a mighty calling to carry God's heart and to reveal His glorious love to the world. None of us can fully imagine or expect what the Lord has for us or what the journey to its fulfillment will look like. I don't think Mary was expecting to carry a child before she was married or to give birth to the Son of God. She could never have anticipated the magnitude of the call or the price she would have to pay.

If we are wise, we will make the choice to say yes to God many times a day. We say yes to taking the time to worship, to having a positive attitude, to releasing people, to stopping for people when we might be in a hurry, to trusting God for a seemingly impossible financial situation. Our yes is a daily choice. There is a daily sacrifice and a daily joy as we participate in God's dreams for this world. As we do this, we participate with Jesus in the sacrifices He too made for the joy that was set before Him. What an awesome privilege!
