Why Christians Should Care about the Attack on Joseph's Tomb

Why Christians Should Care about the Attack on Joseph's Tomb

As a prelude to another so-called "day of rage" in Palestinian controlled areas, Palestinian youths in the late hours Thursday torched Joseph's Tomb near the city of Nablus, which is biblical Shechem in Samaria. They inflicted heavy damage to the site.

This is just the latest in a series attacks against one of the most revered sites in the Jewish faith, and it should also mean a great deal to Christians as well.

Christians have strong ties to Israel and the Jewish people. Dr. Cornelius Bekker is the chair of biblical studies at the College of Arts and Sciences at Regent University. He explains this eternal relationship. Click play to watch.

Three times in scripture, Joseph's resting place is mentioned, adding to the significance in the Lord's eyes.

In Genesis 50, when Joseph is about to die after risiing to the highest level of authority in Egypt, he told his brothers, "I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land He promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob."

Genesis 50 continues: "And Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath and said, 'God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place.'"

The book of Exodus records that Moses fulfilled that oath when the Israelites left Egypt for the Promised Land, and Joseph's bones were brought to Shechem.

In the New Testament book of Hebrews, the renowned chapter 11 describes the great acts of faith of the patriarchs and includes Joseph.

"By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions about his bones."

The desecration of Joseph's Tomb is not an event to be taken lightly in the spiritual realm, and it should be widely condemned worldwide. This is only the latest in a number of attacks, not only on the site itself, but on faithful Jews who come to pay homage there.

Palestinian Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is largely responsible for sustaining an environment of overt hostility to the Jewish people and to the history held sacred by Jews.

To his credit, he condemned this attack and said the Palestinians would help rebuild it.

The next step for Abbas and for Western leaders in Washington and European capitals, as well as at the United Nations, is to consistenty condemn such acts and to shine a light on the celebration of hatred for Jews in the education and media systems of the Palestinian Authority and Hamas.

That is what creates a climate of rage that sends a generation out to destroy sacred places.

That is not something that the "peace process" can solve. No amount of Israeli territorial concessions in places such as Joseph's Tomb will quell such acts of destruction.

Make It Count - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Make It Count
 Now Think On This
by Steve Martin

“But it's trouble ahead if you think you have it made. What you have is all you'll ever get. And it's trouble ahead if you're satisfied with yourself. Your self will not satisfy you for long. And it's trouble ahead if you think life's all fun and games. There's suffering to be met, and you're going to meet it.” (Luke 6:24-25, The Message)

High above the city streets, comfortably living in the multi-millionaire condo, the pro NFL quarterback rests on his laurels. After achieving his early notoriety by leading his football team to the playoffs, he has it made. Now his $20 million a year contract, good for the next five years, has put him in a category few will ever know outside his bubble. The fans rave him. The advertisers laud him. The rest of the world lives on, scrapping by with what little they have. They live on the street below, with nowhere to go.

I will spend nine hours on the job today, among the same towering office buildings. I see it for what it is worth, breaking my heart in the process. Bustling with overachievers, the good life is just waiting to be had. Chasing after the gold, the glory and the girls motivates the majority. In America, wealth is. Get it. Spend it. Get some more of it.

But myself, having left a Christian ministry top administration job in 2010 (after a total of 24 years with three ministries) in order to start a new humanitarian ministry that same year (Love For His People, Inc.), I had to go back to a full time accounting job. I still had to pay the home mortgage and car payment, while keeping the water running and lights on. Typical American.

My good wife at that time had completed 10 full years on her daycare job. Now she is on her 16th year as of this writing. She continues to buy the food and other necessities.

During my office day, on occasion as I sit at my desk, I observe those around me. Several are earning the big bucks (easily $100,000 and much further up the scale each year) and spending company money like there is no limit. Makes no difference if it is today or tomorrow (with our USA government printing it freely, there isn’t.)

In my heart I cry out to the Lord. “Help us raise $150 to buy a sewing machine for a woman in a foreign land, so she can feed her family in the coming days.”

There has always been within me a sense of what Francis of Assisi must have felt like, when his soul became disgusted with the luxury life, and threw it off. These days that reality has become more prominent in our culture. Live like there is no end in sight.

While He walked the earth, coming to save mankind from their lost way, Jesus told the true story of a man named Lazarus. It is, as is true for all of Scripture, still very relevant to us today.

“Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day.  "And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores,  and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man's table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores.

"Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.  "In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom.  "And he cried out and said, ' Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.'

"But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.  'And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.'  "And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father's house —   for I have five brothers — in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'

"But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.'  "But he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!' "But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.'" Luke 16:19-17:31 (NASU)

I have decided to quit watching pro football and NASCAR. (Never did like pro basketball or hockey. NASCAR occupied too much time in the past 20 years of my life.) Yes, I have been among those who got into it when young, cheering for the home team to beat the arch rivals. But knowing the vast amounts of money that those very few now make, while others go without, convicts and prevents me from adding to their rich coffers, to play the games people play.

When I stand before my Lord and He asks me, “What did I do with the time and money entrusted to me?” I want to be able to respond as Jesus did and say, “I was about my Father’s business.”

Each of us, having been given allotted time and resources entrusted to us, must choose how we will use them. What we do with what we have, during our remaining life here on earth, will be made known when we each will give an account, standing before the throne of the Almighty God. All things will be revealed when the books are opened.

What are you doing with your time and energy? I encourage you to make it count for eternity.

His Word. For All Eternity. Now Think On This by Steve Martin

His Word. For All Eternity.
Now Think On This
by Steve Martin

“Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.” (Psalm 119:89 NKJV)

Hopelessness abounds in our society. We have tried to fill our lives with stuff that has brought little fulfillment in our soul, let alone our spirit within. After longing for “that something” we know is out there, after we have grasped for what we think it is, there remains nothing that sustains us. It is like a breeze passing through the trees – here one moment and gone the next.

While the Bible may be continually scoffed at in our public arenas, governmental realms, and most certainly in our educational systems, it has stood strong through the centuries, protected by the Lord God Himself. Since Moses (Hebrew name Moshe) and the prophets recorded the words spoken to them by Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity, these living words have been passed on through all generations. Nothing has, or ever shall destroy these foundational, eternal truths, found in the Torah, the Holy Bible, the recorded Scriptures.

God has kept His eternal Word safe and truly sound throughout the ages.

Many dismiss the Written Word as nothing more than another book, calling it only a collection of fairy tales, make believe stories, or simple sayings. And yet in this eternal volume of inspired words are recorded historical facts, hundreds of prophecies accurately fulfilled, and testimonies of lives changed. It is a proven fact. The Bible alone is God’s Word, and the gates of hell will never have the final say or the ability to destroy it. God has promised to keep His Word. Nothing and no one will ever be able to stand against it and live.

As a Bible teacher named Bob Mumford once said, “Read the back of the book. God wins.”

The Bible gives us the only foundation that will never be shaken or taken away. All else in life may fall, people will come and go, but the one who puts their trust in God’s Word will never be disappointed. Having myself believed on His word since I was a first grader in a small Iowa town named Gilbertville, His truth, encouragement and protection have kept me these many years. Learning the discipline of memorizing and keeping in my heart and head God’s Word, the Bible has certainly been my strong foundation. Where would I be without it? I do not want to go there.

In 1994 a Christian contemporary band called 4Him released their fifth album, called The Ride. Included in the ten songs list was one called Real Thing. One line that stuck with me, as I would put the song on “repeat” in my CD player, was “Jesus is the real thing.” While Coca-Cola would flood the airwaves with advertising on TV and radio during that same time period, singing what it claimed to be, this song brought me and others back to reality - that JESUS was the real thing.

“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14, NASU)

The very Word of God, Jesus incarnate, the Messiah that the world had been looking for, became flesh and dwelt among us. He came to show that He alone is the real thing, the Person we are looking for in our lives.

Yeshua came to His own, the Jewish nation, and yet but a few missed Him that first time. He didn’t come as the King of the Jews that they were expecting or hoping for, to take out the Roman Empire and restore Israel to its former glory as under King David. He came as a lamb, to be the Passover sacrifice.

The Word of God became a human, to pay the price needed to be acceptable to God the Father, in order to wipe away the sins of the world. Only a perfect Lamb, without spot or blemish, could be that one. Jesus was. And is. And always shall be.

Jesus is the real thing. He is the only One who can give hope, heal wounds, and give freely the salvation found only in Him. He alone is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He alone can restore that which the enemy of our soul has killed, stolen and destroyed.

The King of kings and the Lord of lords is His Name. Yeshua HaMashiach, Jesus Christ, the Hope of the World, revealed to us through the Bible.

I like how The Message version of the Bible puts these words in Psalm 119:89-94:

“What you say goes, God,
and stays, as permanent as the heavens.
Your truth never goes out of fashion;
it's as up-to-date as the earth when the sun comes up.

Your Word and truth are dependable as ever;
that's what you ordered — you set the earth going.
If your revelation hadn't delighted me so,
I would have given up when the hard times came.
But I'll never forget the advice you gave me;
you saved my life with those wise words.

Save me! I'm all yours.
I look high and low for your words of wisdom.”

I encourage you to read His Word daily. Memorize His thoughts. Hide them in your heart and speak them often. Continually stand on His Word, making it your firm foundation. In the end His Words will be the only ones that you will be able to count on.

He is the only True Hope of the nations, the Word of God.

Real Thing Lyrics
"Real Thing" was written by Clark, Dave / Koch, Don / Harris, Mark / Clark, Dave.

I can dream about heaven constantly
Both day and night
I can let my mind drift away to a better place
A better time

Though there's nothing wrong with thinking about
Forever by and by
All the while millions are still searching for a light

Maybe it is time we take a look
At here and now
Maybe we can change the destiny
Of a world that's crying out

For the truth we take for granted
Is too often left unsaid
We can get so heaven minded
That sometimes we forget

That we're living in a real world
With real hurt and real pain
And all we really need is the real thing

When we look beyond our circumstance
And face reality
We'll realize that all we really need
Is just to see
Jesus in a real world

There are days when I look around
And I feel like hope is gone
There are times my heart is torn between
Who is right and what is wrong

There are causes I believe in
There are things I'll never change
But I'm finding all that matters
Is there's just one truth
One truth that remains

Cause we're living we're living in a real world
With real hurt and real pain
And all we really need is the real thing
When we look beyond our circumstance
And face reality
We'll realize that all we really need
Is just to see
Jesus in a real world

Navy Chaplain: 'Best Thing for Church is Persecution' - CBN News

Navy Chaplain: 'Best Thing for Church is Persecution'

WASHINGTON -- Navy Chaplain Lt. Cmdr. Wes Modder never expected counseling service members on what the Bible says would put him in the fight of his life.
But that's what happened after a group of those he counseled complained a few months ago about what he had to say on subjects like homosexuality and other sexual matters.
Worsening matters, Modder's direct commander sided with his accusers and decided to take legal action against the chaplain.
"It was shocking. You feel a lot of emotion," Modder told CBN News in a recent interview. "You feel natural feelings like betrayal."
His opponents at Joint Base Charleston in South Carolina didn't just want the Assemblies of God pastor corrected. They were after his job, which would have meant the loss of his military pension as well.
"They wanted to kick me out, remove me from a promotion list," Modder recalled. "Having a family with four children, not knowing what I'm going into, sacrificing 19 years of honorable military service --  all of it was on the line, everything."
Then recently his attorney, Michael Berry with the Liberty Institute, got surprising news from the Navy: Modder was cleared of all the charges.
"When we found out that the Navy, that this two-star admiral had completely exonerated Chaplain Modder, I was blown away," Berry told CBN News. "It was not what I was expecting. I was preparing myself for a dogfight."
Berry said he was elated and could hardly wait to tell Modder the good news. The chaplain and his family were overjoyed. But he admits he's still hurting.
"There's a huge sense of victory and relief, but the emotional capital is overwhelming," Modder said.
Still, he suggested as more and more Christians face similar battles over their beliefs, they have to fight because the cause is crucial.
"I think it's paramount," he said. "I think the best thing for the Church is persecution. And I know that sounds counterintuitive, but we need to stand for religious liberty."
"It's not really about bakers. It's not really about florists. It's about validating something that is national," he explained.
Berry said he's distressed by the un-American nature of this Christian persecution.
"It could be people of any other faiths, too, but unfortunately right now the majority of attacks are coming against Christians in this country," Berry said. "That's not what our country is about."
As a combat veteran, Berry's particularly frustrated military commanders are thrust into the middle of these battles.
"When a commanding officer has to worry about whether or not somebody in his unit is going to be offended because a chaplain is praying or because a chaplain dares to speak from their religious worldview to another service member, that commanding officer now, his attention and his focus is taken away from the external threat and he has to worry about things he should never have to worry about," he said.
Modder and his family will soon be out of the uncomfortable environment he found himself in at Joint Base Charleston. They're transferring to one of their favorite duty stations, San Diego.

Like Daniel, This Man Determined to Bow in Prayer Despite Threats

Join us on our podcast each weekday for an interesting story, well told, from Charisma News. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com.

Despite demands from the school district, high school football coach Joe Kennedy is determined to keep up his ritualistic end-of-game prayers.
At the end of each game, Kennedy walks the 50-yard-line, "thanking God for the game and for the players."

The Bremerton, Washington, school district is still investigating him for violating "fundamental constitutional rights" of his players.
The Seattle Times reports District Superintendent Aaron Leavell recognizes Kennedy's actions were "entirely well-intentioned," but the district determined they are in violation of district policies and the law and are "exposing the district to significant risk of liability."
Kennedy says he's never once received complaints; rather, he's experienced the opposite: "Then a couple said they were Christians and asked if they could join. I responded, 'It's a free country, you can do whatever you want to do.'"
While the school district worries about the liability of the ritual, The Seattle Times reports Bremerton players and opposing teams are engaged in the prayer.
"It's about unity. We can be mad at each other all we want during a game and get upset, but once the game is over, that all goes away," Bremerton team captain Ethan Hacker says. "What (Kennedy) does brings us all together no matter how much we despise (one another)."
As Friday night lights ignite high school football, Kennedy has no intention of backing down.
"I tell my kids to be bold in their beliefs," Kennedy tells the Times. "I want to set an example to stand up for what you believe in, even if it isn't popular."

Hundreds of Israelis -- Jews, Arabs, and Palestinians marched through the center of Jerusalem calling for an end to the current round of violence and calling on people to support coexistence and a solution to the occupation.

The event, which began on Facebook, organized for people to come from Tel Aviv and Haifa as well.

Representatives from Jerusalem's Hand in Hand school - a bilingual Hebrew Arabic school which promotes coexistence, spoke at the event as well as representatives from other peace interest groups including the forum for Israeli-Palestinian bereaved parents for peace, reconciliation and tolerance.

Hadil, an Israeli-Arab from mi'ilya in the western galilee, said she came because of her belief in the importance of Arabs and Jews standing together. Although she added that despite the good nature of the event, it doesn't attract all the people it should.

"Sometimes Arabs think that the peace the jews talk about is not the same peace Arabs talk about - some Jews also think this and don't come."
