Dozens Shot Over Memorial Day Weekend As The Collapse Of Chicago Accelerates - Michael Snyder THE ECONOMIC COLLAPSE BLOG

Gang Violence - Public Domain

Posted: 29 May 2016  Michael Snyder  THE ECONOMIC COLLAPSE BLOG

Chaos and violence threaten to spiral out of control in America’s third largest city, and nobody seems to have any idea how to solve the problem.  After decades of control by the radical left, many parts of the “Windy City” have become rotting, decaying, gang-infested hellholes.  Just like Detroit, the city of Chicago is rapidly becoming a joke to the rest of the world, but a horribly corrupt political culture likely stands in the way of any type of major reform any time soon.  And just like much of the rest of the nation, a spirit of violence and civil unrest is rising in Chicago.

So far this year, the number of shootings in Chicago is up 50 percent compared to the same time period last year, and that was before we even got to Memorial Day weekend.  As of Sunday morning, at least 40 people had already been shot, and authorities were bracing for even more violence as the holiday weekend stretched on…
A string of nearly two dozen shootings on the West Side has pushed the number of people shot during the Memorial Day weekend to at least 40, with two more days to go.
As of early Sunday morning, the toll stood at four dead and 36 wounded across the city, including a 15-year-girl shot to death as she rode in a Jeep on Lake Shore Drive near Fullerton Avenue, police said.
The cries to fix what is wrong with Chicago are becoming increasingly desperate, but at this point the city is drowning in debt and is pretty much flat broke.

So the options for doing anything about this growing crisis are quite limited.

But that isn’t stopping prominent city leaders from speaking out.  According to the New York Times, Rev. Corey Brooks believes that “we could be looking at a blood bath” this summer if nothing changes…
“If something doesn’t change, if we don’t get jobs for these kids, if we don’t change the economic situation, I’m worried that we could be looking at a blood bath,” said the Rev. Corey Brooks, a pastor on the city’s South Side, a mostly African-American area where some of the shootings have been concentrated. “If something doesn’t happen, I fear that we’re potentially looking at one of the worst summers we’ve ever had.”
As of Friday morning, homicides in Chicago were up 52 percent in 2016, compared with the same period a year ago, and shootings had increased by 50 percent, though the pace of violence had slowed in recent weeks, the police said.
I believe that Rev. Brooks is correct, but he isn’t identifying the core of the problem.

Thanks in large part to unchecked illegal immigration, gang membership has been surging in Chicago.  Back in 2012, the Chicago Crime Commission estimated that there were 150,000 gang members living in the city, but of course by now that number is likely far higher.

No city in the United States has a higher population of gang members than Chicago does, and hundreds of factions are constantly battling for turf.  The police in Chicago insist that they have the situation under control, but everyone can see that they do not.

And how could they?  There are only 13,318 law enforcement officers of all types in the city of Chicago.  They are outnumbered by the gangs by much more than a 10 to 1 margin.  There is no way in the world that they are ever going to be able to stop the gang violence.  All they can do is hope to contain it.

Sadly, they are fighting a losing battle, because with each passing month thousands more gang members cross our southern border illegally and head directly for our major cities where they are warmly received by their gang brothers.

Perhaps this helps to explain why 3,000 millionaires left the city of Chicago last year.

Do you want to know somewhere else that has been controlled by the radical left for decades and that is now seeing chaos and violence spin out of control?

In Venezuela, we get to see what it looks like when an entire country starts to shut down.  The following comes from the New York Times
The courts? Closed most days. The bureau to start a business? Same thing. The public defender’s office? That’s been converted into a food bank for government employees.
Step by step, Venezuela has been shutting down.
This country has long been accustomed to painful shortages, even of basic foods. But Venezuela keeps drifting further into uncharted territory.
At this point, more than 80 percent of all basic consumer products are in short supply, and some people have become so desperate that they are actually hunting cats and dogs for food.  My wife and I had a lot more to say about the rapidly deteriorating situation down in Venezuela during a recent episode of our new television show.  It is so important to watch what is going on down there right now, because eventually the same things will be happening here in America too.

When society breaks down, people become very desperate, and crime spirals out of control.  The mafia and the gangs are having a field day at the moment, and the police are so overwhelmed that they can’t do much to stop them.

And if you need medical treatment down in Venezuela right now, you might as well forget it
The Luis Razetti Hospital in the portal city of Barcelona looks like a war zone.
Patients can be seen balancing themselves on half-broken beds with days-old blood on their bodies.
They’re the lucky ones; most are curled up on the floor, blood streaming, limbs blackening.
Children lie among dirty cardboard boxes in the hallways without food, water or medication.
Without electricity or functioning machines, medics have had to create their own solutions. Two men who had surgery on their legs have their limbs elevated by makeshift slings made out of water bottles.
Most Americans would scoff at the suggestion that we could ever see scenes like that in the United States, but just a few years ago most Venezuelans would have probably said the exact same thing.

For so long, watchmen all over America have been endlessly warning people to get prepared.

But at some point, time runs out.

In fact, down in Venezuela time has already run out.  Store shelves all over the country are empty, there are chronic shortages of basic supplies, some people are hunting dogs and cats for food, and there has been an almost total breakdown of public services.

I wish that I could say that these kinds of conditions are only going to be limited to Venezuela.  But I cannot say that.  Great suffering is going to eventually spread all over the world, and that is going to include our own nation.

I hope that you are using this short period of relative stability wisely, because it will be gone way too soon.

Cycles - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Cycles

Now Think On This
Steve Martin

A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season, how good it is!” (Proverbs 15:23, NKJV)

All around us there are cycles. The nightly sky typically glows with the light of the moon, which completes a full cycle from a new moon to a full moon in 29.5 days. The Hebrew or Jewish calendar is based on this, these lunisolar phases, giving the Jews a consistent basis for anticipating feasts and regular days of consistent life.

New years come and go. We count on them to bring the completion of one year, bringing hope for a better one to come, and maybe start over in certain aspects in our lives. According to the Julian calendar, every 365 days that specific cycle comes full circle.

“You made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to set. You bring darkness, and it is night, the time when all forest animals prowl. The young lions roar after their prey and seek their food from God. The sun rises, they slink away and lie down to rest in their dens; while people go out to their work, laboring on till evening.

What variety there is in your works, Adonai! How many [of them there are]! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creations. (Psalm 104:19-24 Complete Jewish Bible)

In most climates of the earth, we have the four seasons. Spring, summer, fall and winter bring new life, new growth and new creation before the annual cycle completes its life with “death” or hibernation settling in for months, before it starts all over again. For many, this continual cycle is very refreshing, bringing the newness of flourishing green, yellow, red, and all colors of the rainbow in vegetation and bird life, as the cycle repeats itself.

Certainly our God is a God of cycles. With so many examples in the natural, we can expect to find them also in the spiritual.

“However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural; then the spiritual. The first man is from the earth, earthy; the second man is from heaven. As is the earthy, so also are those who are earthy; and as is the heavenly, so also are those who are heavenly. Just as we have borne the image of the earthy, we will also bear the image of the heavenly.” (1 Corinthians 15:46-49 NASU)

Often I have been amazed at these spiritual cycles. I have written of them over my years, and can clearly see seven year markers on this life timeline. I can go back in my spiritual walk and map the years based on these seven year increments, seeing major highlights and milestones that the Lord Jesus had established and planned through them, believing they were assigned even before my birth.

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations." (Jeremiah 1:5, NASU)

At times I need to remind myself of these cycles, believing that even while I am yet in the middle of another one, finding myself once again wondering if the completion of expectations will yet come soon, that the past promises fulfilled can be a foretelling proof of the future ones also being prophetically fulfilled. In the proper time of course.

You too can count on the Almighty God to bring completion of cycles in your life. Whether you are in the beginning, middle or end of your current spiritual one, the hope placed within can see you through to the circle being completed, with new life brought forth once again. As we keep our eyes on the Lord, our Eternal Hope, Author and Finisher of our faith, certainly we can stand on solid ground, and see dreams and visions come to fruition. In His time it shall be so.

Be glad that the Creator of all, Who has set in motion consistent cycles in your natural and spiritual life, will surely come through once again in your life through these spiritual cycles. We can count on Him to do it. He is Faithful and True.

Persevere to the end. You will see the cycle's completion, and rejoice in His love, wisdom and provision.

Christian Woman Accused of Blasphemy Does the Unthinkable - ASIF AQEEL/WORLD WATCH MONITOR CHARISMA NEWS

Join us on our podcast each weekday for an interesting story, well told, from Charisma News. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com.

A young Pakistani Christian woman accused of blasphemy chose not to flee from her home, so that her Christian neighbors wouldn't be targeted in her absence.
The accusations against Sonia Gill, 23, were eventually withdrawn, but not before she had refused to leave the "Christian Town" settlement near Gujrat.
Dozens of Pakistanis have been murdered and Christian settlements attacked after blasphemy accusations. In all recent examples, Christians fled their homes in the wake of the accusations, but Gill refused to do so, despite angry protestations outside her home.
"If I flee, what would happen to my Christian neighbors and their houses?" she said.
The accusation came less than a month after another Christian was accused of blasphemy in the village of Chak 44, just 100km away. On 16 May, an angry mob of about 70 people gathered outside Gill's house, led by Muslim cleric Khubaib Jalali, who used to live in Mandi Bahauddin, the nearest city to Chak 44.
At least 150 Christian families live in Christian Town, which has three churches.

How events unfolded

Gill's neighbor, Sharjila Komal, known as "Poma", accused her of using an advertising banner bearing the name of Prophet Muhammad as a floor covering. But Gill said the banners bore only the names of politicians and that her neighbor had another motive for the accusation.
"About three years ago, Poma's sister-in-law eloped with my cousin, Khalid," Gill said. "A police case was registered against Khalid, but the matter was settled after the woman returned. But that is why Poma had a grudge against us.
"Poma stitches clothes and lives next door to us. That morning, she came to our home to say that my niece's uniform had been stitched and could be picked up from her at any time. She saw an advertising banner spread on the floor, which had pictures of politicians and their names. My brother, Shaukat, has a keen interest in politics. These banners were used in November last year, during local elections, and now they were of no use, so we were using them to cover the floor."
Shaukat Gill added: "It was about 8 p.m., when about 70 people reached our home and demanded that the banner 'bearing sacred Islamic names' be handed over to them. I invited the prominent persons – who were about 18 in number – to come in and inspect the banners they believed bore the sacred name of the Prophet.
"After seeing the banners, these angry protestors said that they were not satisfied and that they would consult among themselves in the nearby mosque."
As the mob departed to discuss the matter at Mosque Gulzar-e-Habib, Shaukat Gill called the police.
"I suspected that the mob would return and may attack us," said Gill, who works as a driver in Gujrat. "The police arrived in a short while and brought the situation under control. In the presence of the police, banners were once again shown for examination, but nothing blasphemous was found."
However, Jalali filed a complaint against the Gills at the local police station and asked for a case to be registered under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The situation remained tense the following morning.
"Christian girls who returned from school told us that they heard in the street that a protest would again be taken out," Sonia Gill explained. "Poma said that she would go to any extent to teach me a lesson. I told her that nothing could take place without the will of my God. Several Christians and Muslims suggested that I should flee the place, but I said that if I did, angry protestors would harm other Christians and their property. Whatever they want to do, they should do it to me and not to others."

Accusation withdrawn

Pakistan's Express Tribune newspaper reported that Sonia Gill had "begged pardon", even though the police said she was "innocent".
"My friends Mushtaq Butt and Allah Rakha Sahotra tirelessly worked with various communities in the city," said Shaukat Gill. "Although we were still very much worried, we believed that God would do a miracle. The next day after the incident, Butt told me that the matter had been resolved."
He added that Butt had been asked to swear on the Qur'an that the Gills hadn't committed blasphemy and would never do so. Butt stated this on oath, after which all accusations were dropped.
The cleric officially withdrew his complaint, writing the following statement: "It is submitted that I [the speaker] in the Gulzar-e-Madina Mosque. I had earlier submitted an application against Shaukat Gill and others regarding committing blasphemy against the Prophet. I have investigated the matter. No occurrence of blasphemy could be verified. As for now, I don't seek any legal action on my application."
"The situation of law and order is under control and the family is living peacefully in their home," said local policeman Ghulam Abbas Dogar.

Emergency hotline agreed

Punjab parliamentarian Mary Gill told World Watch Monitor that after hearing about the incident, she had travelled to meet the Gills and other local Christians. She then reported the case to the district police.
"The police have played a very crucial role in restoring law and order in both instances of blasphemy accusations in Mandi Bahauddin and Gujrat," she said. "It is very encouraging that at least in this instance Sonia did not have to flee the situation.
"As the second blasphemy accusation in less than a month surfaced in the same area, I directly informed the Chief Minister, Shahbaz Sharif, about the situation and then went to ensure the safety of the Christians.
"On the instructions of the Chief Minister, the matter was discussed in a high-powered cabinet meeting on 19 May.
"I suggested establishing a minorities' protection cell, where quick information about such incidents could be provided and law-enforcement agencies could be mobilized to deal with such situations. I am happy that the cabinet meeting decided on establishing a cell that could deal with such untoward situations."

Franklin Graham Makes Prophetic Call for Daniels to Arise - JOY ALLMOND/BGEA CHARISMA NEWS

Join us on our podcast each weekday for an interesting story, well told, from Charisma News. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com.

At the 26 Decision America prayer rallies to date, many have been asked, Why are you here?
The answer is often one form or another of, "I'm concerned about the next generation."
And so is Franklin Graham.
"Daniel, in the Bible, lived in one of the most heathen, pagan countries in the world, but became prime minister under seven kings and two empires," Franklin said from the steps of the North Dakota State Capitol in Bismarck on Wednesday.
"We need Daniels today."
Several teachers at Williston Trinity Christian School are doing their part in raising "Daniels"—godly people who will stand up and stand out in a secular society.
When Lois Johnson, the 7th grade Bible teacher, heard Decision America was coming to her state, she knew it would be worth the four-hour drive from Williston.
"I just see the need for prayer in our country," she said. "I thought it was a great opportunity for our students to experience this, especially since it's such a pivotal year in America."
Word got around that Johnson planned to bring her Bible class; before long, the entire middle school was planning a field trip.
Some of the parents—and even the school's principal—came to stand with roughly 3,100 other North Dakotans.
"It is very special—in our country—to have this opportunity," said principal Cory Fleck.
"We are also aware that these freedoms could be taken away from us. I think that's why I felt the importance to come here. And if the students don't understand their rights as Americans—and as Christians—we'll be overrun, eventually," Fleck said.
As a social studies teacher, Angela Nible wanted her students to exercise the freedom they have as Americans to attend a public prayer rally and remind them of the blessings of choice when it comes to education.
"It's so important to have educational options—whether it's public school, Christian school or home school," Nible said.
"And to be able to come together like this and meet with the whole family of God is a freedom I don't take for granted," she added. "I hope this freedom continues. It's really important."
Nible's colleague Traci Shirk wanted Wednesday's rally to remind the students that God is ultimately the only reason America is free and blessed.
"We talk a lot about politics, and we study the history of our country," Shirk explained. "But we as Christians need to define who we are. Our founding fathers were Christians.
"We need to speak up and remind (the students) that our country is founded on faith and that's what will keep us strong, and that's what will keep our country blessed. These students need to experience what it's like to pray for our country, represent our country and have a voice for our country and our God."
Andrea Black, a 5th and 6th grade Bible teacher, said another benefit of the Decision America Tour rally was giving students a closer look at the life and ministry of Billy Graham.
"I have talked about Billy Graham in class, and I explain to the students that he has lived an uncompromised life of ministry," Black said.
"When someone can live that long and not compromise, we should listen to what he has to say," she added. "And now, to see his son here carrying on that legacy is a wonderful thing."
Black's hope after attending the Decision America Tour is that her students will be encouraged to be more than "Daniels." She wants to see them raise believers who will carry the torch of faithfulness—just like Billy and Franklin Graham.
"I want them to understand their parents have put them in a Christian school because it's important to them," she said.
"It's up to them to carry on that legacy to the next generation."

100 Years of American Jewry's Contribution to Israel Celebrated in the Knesset By JNS - BREAKING ISRAEL NEWS

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses Wednesday's Knesset event honoring 100 years of American Jewry's contributions to the State of Israel. The event was organized by the Ruderman Family Foundation. (Daniel Gilboa)

100 Years of American Jewry's Contribution to Israel Celebrated in the Knesset

“There is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24 (The Israel Bible™)
It is “difficult to overstate the importance of the American Jewish people to the State of Israel,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday at an event in the Israeli Knesset that honored U.S. Jewry’s 100 years of contributions to Israel.
“American Jewry’s contribution to the state has been enormous and it will continue to be important to the future of the Israeli people,” said Netanyahu. “We must be more familiar with American Jewry and we must know more about them, and I’m convinced we will continue to see many young Americans making aliyah (immigration to Israel).”
Israel at your fingers!
The first-of-its-kind Knesset ceremony was organized by the Ruderman Family Foundation, which focuses on strengthening Israel-Diaspora relations. The foundation takes annual delegations of Knesset members on trips to the U.S. in order to help them gain a deeper understanding of American Jewry.
“I want to thank the Ruderman Family Foundation for this wonderful initiative and all the work they do to educate our delegates on better understanding the American Jewish community,” Israeli opposition leader Member of Knesset Isaac Herzog (Zionist Union) said Wednesday, on the heels of failed negotiations to bring his party into Netanyahu’s governing coalition. “It’s been a difficult few days between myself and Prime Minister Netanyahu, but one thing we have in common is our roots to the American Jewish people. We must do all we can to keep this golden bridge standing forever.”

Study finds 10 million Muslims have become followers of Christ since 1960.

by joelcrosenberg
MBBs-graphic-Johnstone
(Washington, D.C.) -- An unprecedented spiritual revolution is underway in the Islamic world.
From 1960 to 2010, the number of Muslims who have converted away from Islam and become true followers of Jesus Christ has skyrocketed, from fewer than 200,000 to some 10 million people. Amidst persecution and even genocide, the Church in the Middle East is growing in ways never seen in fourteen centuries of Islam. And there is now scholarly documentation backing up these numbers.
Yesterday, I had the honor of addressing the pastors at the "Watchmen on the Wall" conference organized by the Family Research Council. Tony Perkins, president of FRC, asked me to brief the gathering on the latest on the persecuted Church in the Middle East and it was my joy to do so -- especially to share this exciting news.
Here are notes I used for my presentation. You'll find details regarding the soaring number of Muslim conversions under point #4, including a link to the peer-reviewed journal article where these data are found. Hope you find them helpful.
1.) The sobering reality is that 2015 was the "worst year in modern history for Christian persecution." This was the finding from the most recent report on global persecution from Open Doors. Some 7,100 Christians were killed for their faith last year. up 50% from the previous year. Some 2,400 churches were destroyed or damaged last year. According to the president of Open Doors, "The level of exclusion, discrimination, and violence against Christians is unprecedented, spreading and intensifying."
What countries top the list of the worst for persecution of Christians? Nine of the top 10 are Muslim majority countries.
  1. North Korea (14 years in a row at the top)
  2. Iraq
  3. Eritrea
  4. Afghanistan
  5. Syria
  6. Pakistan
  7. Somalia
  8. Sudan
  9. Iran
  10. Libya
This doesn't mean that all Muslims are dangerous or are persecutors of Christians. The vast majority of Muslims do not intend us harm. However, this does mean that empirical evidence confirms that wherever the forces of Radical Islam -- and Apocalyptic Islam -- are highly active or in control, followers of Jesus Christ are in grave danger.

The Scriptures repeatedly warn believers to expect persecution, especially as the return of Christ approaches (see Matthew 24:8).

  • The Apostle Paul told Timothy, "Everyone who lives a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted." (2 Timothy 3:12)
  • The Lord Jesus told His disciples in John 16:2, "an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God." That hour has now come.
2.) The Church in Syria and Iraq today is not simply facing persecution -- it's facinggenocideWhat is genocide? Jay Sekulow, head of the American Center for Law and Justice, and his team note, “The Holocaust gave rise to the necessity to define what ‘genocide’ is, and Article 2 of the U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948) did just that,” defining it as:
any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
Tragically, this is exactly what is happening in Syria and Iraq. The forces of the Islamic State are beheading, crucifying, torturing, starving and enslaving Christians, and trying to forcibly convert them to Islam. Many Christians are dying. Many are fleeing. Some, sadly, are converting away. This is genocide. Consider the facts:

• The number of Christians in Syria has dropped from 1.25 million to 500,000 in recent years, according to analyses by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) and the American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ).
On Sunday evening in Jerusalem, I had tea with the Vicar of Baghdad -- Anglican Canon Andrew White -- and some pastors and friends. For years he lived in the capital of Iraq, ministering to Christians from many denominations and trying to be a witness to Muslims of Christ's love and mercy. He explained to us that in 2014 he finally had to evacuate from Iraq because it had just become too dangerous. The stories he told us of ISIS atrocities he knew of first hand were horrific. He described a father forced by ISIS jihadists to renounce his Christian faith and convert to Islam or watch his children beheaded. He told another story of several young Christian children threatened by ISIS to convert to Islam or their parents would be murdered. But the children refused to convert saying they loved Jesus, and Jesus loved them and cared for them, and they had to always stay close to Jesus. Their parents were murdered in front of them.
To be clear, ISIS is waging genocide not just against Christians -- seeking to destroy all followers of Christ and to physically destroy all Christian houses of worship. They are also seeking to destroy the Yazidis (a minority sect in the region) and Muslims who don't share their same theological and eschatological views. Indeed, it is Muslims who are dying most at the hands of ISIS. And, of course, ISIS continues to threaten to invade Israel and murder all the Jews. Why? Because they believe that such genocidal actions will help accelerate the coming of their so-called messiah -- the Mahdi -- and the return of Jesus (to be the Mahdi's deputy). They also believe this will usher in the global Islamic kingdom or Caliphate and bring about the End of Days.

3.) By the grace of our sovereign God, the two safest places for Christians in the Middle East today are Israel and Jordan.

Israel is a Jewish State. It's a democracy (where Christians can vote and Arabs can vote and serve in government; we have an Arab Supreme Court Justice and 17 Arabs serving as Members of the Knesset, up from 12 in the previous elections). Israel does not have a particularly large population of Christ followers (thought the numbers of Jewish, Arab and international believers is steadily growing). Still, Israel is an oasis of religious freedom and personal safety and security for Christians in a sea of fire.

Israel is by no means perfect. Like every country, our government and society has many flaws. Still, it never ceases to astound and grieve me when I see some Christians around the world -- including some liberal, mainline denominations -- attacking Israel as a country of "apartheid" and "racism" and using all kinds of other epithets and announcing boycotts and divestment from Israel as if it were some pariah state, rather than acknowledging that for all our flaws this is the safest place for Christians to be in the entire Middle East.
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, meanwhile -- our next door neighbor -- is a Muslim monarchy. Like Israel, Jordan does not have a huge Christian population (though the numbers of Christ followers is steadily increasing). That said, King Abdullah II has created the safest political and cultural environment for Christians in all of the Middle East. He and the Royal Family and the Jordanian government show great respect for the Christian community. Churches operate freely. Attacks by Islamic extremists are not countenanced. The King even created a national park along the Jordan River several years ago, allowing 13 Christian denominations to build church facilities and perform baptisms in the River. This is unimaginable in almost any other Muslim-majority country.

Let us, therefore, pray for the people and leaders of these two countries. Let's thank them and seek to bless them for the blessings they are to Christians, even though most of their leaders disagree with what we believe.

4.) Despite the worst persecution in the modern history of the Church (or maybe because of it), we are seeing the greatest harvest of souls in the Muslims world in the history of the Church.

As sheer savagery has been unleashed in the Middle East, the Spirit of the living God is moving in power and great glory. Satan is on the offensive, but so is Christ. Darkness is falling, but the Light of the gospel is shining in the darkness.

To this end, I commend to your attention the following: "Believers In Christ From A Muslim Background: A Global Census" is a 19 page peer-reviewed article written by two respected Christian scholars, Dr. Duane Alexander Miller, a professor at St. Mary's University in Texas, and Patrick Johnstone, the long-time editor of Operation World (a series of books that carefully documented the state of Christianity in every country on a planet and which sold more than 2.5 million copies.)

Their study, published 2015 in the Interdisciplinary Journal of Research on Religion (out of Baylor University) examined all the research that has been done on Muslim conversions to Christianity from 1960 to 2010. They carefully analyzed country-by-country data and tried to take special care to weed out double-counting, possible exaggerations, and a range of other issues and variables. Their conclusions were stunning.

From 1960 to 2010, the number of Muslims that have converted to faith in Jesus Christ has grown from fewer than 200,000 to some 10 million people.
In their analysis, the 10 million figure is actually a mid-range. They conclude the number of conversions could be as low as around 6 million or even as high as around 17 or 18 million. To be sure, it's impossible to get absolutely precise numbers of conversions out of Iran or Saudi Arabia, among other countries. And one must keep in mind that the data they looked at does not include 2011 to the present, though there is evidence of continued -- perhaps even accelerated -- conversions in recent years. That said, the scholars conclude 10 million is a solid conservative estimate based on the data they obtained.
The chart above is from their article. It shows the surge of conversions in recent decades.

To date, this is the most definitive data I have personally seen verifying the Great Awakening that is underway in the Muslim world.

True, in a world of 1.6 billion Muslims, 10 million conversions does not seem like many. But in nearly fourteen centuries of Islam, there were almost no conversions to Christians. Some, but not many. Now there is a civil war inside Islam. Muslims are questioning what they believe, why they believe it, and whether they have the truth or not. Many are looking at the "purist" Islamic regimes in Iraq and ISIS and concluding, "If that's Islam, I can't be a part of it." They're searching satellite TV, radio and the Internet for answers. They are reading the Bible and examining the claims of Christ. Some are even seeing dreams and visions of Jesus -- and they are coming to faith in numbers we've never seen.

To me what's important is not the number per se -- it's the dynamic. It's the trend lines. And they are moving in a positive direction for the first time since Islam was founded in the seventh century.

To read specific examples and testimonies of "Muslim Background Believers," consider reading my 2009 book, Inside The Revolution. My friend, Tom Doyle, has told more examples in his books Dreams & Visions and Killing Christians. I highly encourage you to read these, as well.

The Vicar of Baghdad shared with me even more examples, including the story of an ISIS jihadist recently having a dream in which he saw "the man in white" -- realized it was Jesus Christ, realized that faith in Christ was the only way to be forgiven of his sins and find true hope and peace and truly get to heaven -- and converted away from Islam to Biblical Christianity and became born again.

CONCLUSION

Yes, darkness is falling on the modern Middle East. But the Hebrew prophet Isaiah told us that "the people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine upon them." (Isaiah 9:2)

This was true when the Lord Jesus came to Israel the first time 2,000 years ago. Today, the Light of Christ is again dawning on the people living in great darkness as the persecuted Church shows the love of Christ and shares the Gospel message.

Our job is to come along side our persecuted brothers and sisters and love them, encourage them, pray for them, visit them, resource them, help them stand strong and courageous for our Lord and King.

The Lord Jesus told us in Matthew 5 to rejoice when we are persecuted. So many of our brothers and sisters in the Mideast are rejoicing. They are full of joy because Jesus is all they have. They've lost everything else, but they have never felt spiritually and emotionally wealthier than they do today.

As one Iraq pastor told me, "We are living similar lives to Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Yes, the fires here in Iraq are seven times hotter than they were. But Jesus is here with us, walking with us in the fire."

I'm so grateful for men like the Vicar of Baghdad who are living in the region, among suffering people, loving them, serving them in the name of Jesus.
My wife and sons and I are honored to be living in the epicenter and having the chance to meet and encourage and serve our brothers and sisters who are serving heroically against the odds.

And I'm so grateful for my colleagues at The Joshua Fund who are so dedicated to providing humanitarian relief for the poor and vulnerable in Israel, both Jews and Arabs, and for refugees fleeing from Assad and ISIS. They're passionate about strengthening the Church in the epicenter to boldly preach the Gospel to all, to teach the whole counsel of God, and to make disciples and raise up new pastors. I love these guys, and I believe their ministry is more important than ever given what's happening in the region.
