Rosh Hashanah, literally "Head of the Year," marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year. Special foods are eaten during Rosh Hashanah - for example, we dip apples in honey to symbolize a good and sweet new year.
Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the most solemn day in the Jewish calendar. The Bible prescribes Yom Kippur as a day of affliction (Lev 16; 23:26-32). In modern observance, Yom Kippur involves a fast from both food and drink.
Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles, is a week-long feast during which the Jewish community builds temporary shelters (sukkot means "booths" in Hebrew) to remind each generation that our forefathers lived as nomads, wandering in the desert for forty years.
