Getting In and Out of the Boat (Your Boat)

"Put Up Your Sail And See If the Wind Will Catch It"

Have you ever thought of something you would like to do, but you couldn't figure out how it would work or how it would succeed? So, you dropped the idea "until later."

What about the book or booklet you were going to write, but never got around to it? What about the art classes you wanted to take? What about the place you promised yourself to go? Or the person or ministry you really wanted to hang out with?

You know, we only have one life to live down here. You may as well have some adventures. I tell the older people, the grandpas and grandmas – this is the best opportunity you've ever had to get up and do something adventurous.

How do you know if it is going to work? Well, sometimes you don't know; you have to "give it a go," as they say in New Zealand, or, as Janice's husband, David, says to her, "Put your sail up and see if the wind will catch it."

You have to take opportunities – doors can open and close, and windows of opportunity can open and close. If you don't have your spiritual antenna up, you can miss those doors, because you are "busy." 

Did you know you can be so busy working for Jesus you can totally miss a God opportunity? Jesus doesn't require you to work for Him; He wants you to yield to Him so that He can work THROUGH you. Much easier that way.

Some opportunities mean that you are in the boat. But you have to push off from the shore.You have to leave familiar territory – your comfort zone – and launch out, not exactly knowing all the details on the map either.

Where Is Your Comfort Zone?

Sometimes you have to get OUT of the boat if the boat has become your comfort zone. Remember Peter? He got out of his comfort zone, didn't he? A boat...that's his territory – he was comfortable there. He was a fisherman, and guess what? Fishermen practically live in boats. A very familiar place for him. He had probably managed to keep safe in all kinds of weather before now. 

But suddenly, Peter saw Jesus walking on the water. Do you know, just like you, Peter had never actually seen anyone do that before?

I'm sure he had eyes like saucers. "Whaaaat?" But before he knew it, he realized this was an opportunity, and he leapt into an unknown sphere of faith. He couldn't wait for Jesus to get in the boat, because that particular opportunity would pass. He leapt into action, didn't he?

Next thing you know – there he is walking on the water. Whoooa, amazing! Of course we all know he got His eyes off Jesus and had to get back in the boat, but at least he had a go...at least he knew in the future that's a possibility.

You know, sometimes there aren't six months for you to debate about how to respond to an open door. You have an idea of something. But that's not enough – you have to push out from the shore, you, have to raise the sail. 

You have to let the wind catch the sail.

Now Is Not The Time To Stay In Your Comfort Zone

Do you know that in Ireland in the fifth and sixth centuries there were many preachers in the monasteries? During that Celtic revival the monasteries would have about 4,000 young men and women. 

They were like our Bible colleges. They healed the sick, preached the Gospel, and raised the dead. Some of them, called the Peregrini, would get into a boat off the shores of Ireland; the boat had no engine, no oars, and no rudder. They hoisted the sail and trusted God to send the winds to take them where they were meant to go. Brendan the Navigator had many miraculous adventures that way. He even sailed to America ("the Land of Promise," he called it.)

So, what about you? You can stay in your comfort zone – in your familiar boat, or you can raise the sail and let the winds take you out and into the purposes of God. It's so easy to get settled, isn't it? 

Now is not that time.

We all have heard and seen the prophecies about the move of God and about the CHANGES. 

Peter was probably quite successful as a fisherman. He was comfortable there – it's what he knew. But He met Jesus, and Jesus really turned his boat upside down. There he was in his comfort-zone life, and suddenly he met a Man unlike any other man he had ever met. 

One day Jesus said, "Hey Peter, leave all that fishing, get out of your boat. I have some other fish to fry" (Kathie's interpretation, but it's good – and Scriptural).

Peter had to make a decision, didn't he? Jesus didn't say, "I will give you six months to think it over, and if you feel so inclined, well you can come with me." He just said to Peter, "Follow Me," and probably carried on walking.

Are you ready to hoist the sail? Are you going to push away from the shore? 

If you want things to change, you have to do something different. 

I don't believe it's the will of God that you are in a job that you hate, or a ministry or church you can hardly stand. That's immoral, really, as you will never give it your best. He puts His desires in your heart, so that when you serve Him, it's delightful, because it's in your heart.

What's really is in your heart? Keep your antenna up. Hoist the sail, let the wind come and take you where He wants you to go.

Israeli Tourism Minister Uzi Landau earlier this month inaugurated a new visitors center in the Jewish “settlement” of Sussia south of Hebron, and said the Jewish state must stop referring to itself as an “occupier” before it can expect anyone else to do the same.

“In the past we had arguments [over whether or not to remain here], but we always said it is our [land],” noted Landau. “But for the past 20 years we have been calling ourselves ‘occupiers,’ so what do we expect from everyone else?”

According to Landau, Israel needs to do a full 180 degree turn in how it approaches the subject. “This is our land! This is our homeland!” the minister stated emphatically. “We need to build without reservation and act as though we belong here.”

Landau urged Israelis and Jews everywhere to get back in touch with their roots, to realize the nation that God intended them to be, by visiting the ancient places like Sussia.

"My visit to China [in May], and your visit today in Jerusalem, showcases the determination our two governments have to strengthen our friendship and improve cooperation between us," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Jerusalem on Wednesday.

Wang arrived in Israel Tuesday night for a three-day visit. "Our strengths complement one another," Netanyahu said. China has massive industrial and global reach. Israel has expertise in every area of high-tech. And I think the combination could be very, very beneficial to China and of course to Israel. Especially with regards to the fields we are talking about: science and technology, water management, agriculture, green energy and health services. 

Likewise we want to increase cooperation between us in global transportation. I would like to talk to you about the rail road that will connect Asia and Europe, by going from the port of Eilat on the Red Sea to the Ashdod port on the Mediterranean. I believe this is important to global and Chinese commerce."

Netanyahu highlighted the two countries' shared values. "We both value education and families. We value knowledge and learning. We place importance on taking initiative and being entrepreneurial, something which both Israel and China have in great supply. I think Israel could be a perfect partner for 

China in research and developm

"It gives me great pleasure to come to Israel," Wang said. "Indeed this is my first trip to this country as Chinese foreign minister. I have first and foremost come to Israel for the furtherance of friendship between our two countries. Indeed there is a profound traditional friendship between people of our two countries."

The Chinese foreign minister echoed Netanyahu's belief that Israel and China's economies are well fitted for one another. "I've also come to pursue stronger cooperation between our two countries. Our two economies are highly complementary, and the mutually beneficial cooperation between us enjoys a very bright future. During your visit to China this year, Mr. Prime Minister, you reached a very important agreement with President Xi Jinping, and Premier Li Keqiang of China on how to further deepen the mutually beneficial cooperation between our two countries. 

I have come to explore with my Israeli counterpart on how to further implement all the important consensus and explore the various areas of even stronger cooperation between us so as to deliver greater benefits to both peoples," Wang said.

With regards to Middle East diplomacy. Wang said his country would "continue to play a positive role in the region." Netanyahu tried to rally the Chinese behind a deal to prevent Iran from being able to produce nuclear weapons. "We believe that for the peace of the world, for the peace of the coming years and decades, Iran must be denied the capability -- I stress the word -- the capability to develop nuclear weapons. It must fully comply with U.N. Security Council resolutions," Netanyahu said.

Wang recalled China's reception of Jews refugees during World War II, when other nations turned them away. "I believe this helped form the basis of the deep and valued friendship between our two countries, such a friendship should only be improved," he said.

Wang praised Netanyahu for initiating the efforts to improve ties with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang. "I came to see how to implement important agreements and evaluate different fields of increased cooperation with my Israeli colleagues, to the benefit of both nations," Wang said.

Israel and China recently agreed to lift the visa requirement for people holding diplomatic passports when traveling between the two countries.

Wang also met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday and expressed hope that the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians bear fruit.

Meanwhile, speaking at a Likud convention Wednesday night, Netanyahu reiterated his stance against the Iranian nuclear threat. "Seventy years after the attempted extermination of our people, comes a leader [in Iran] and says he will destroy the Jews and the Jewish state and is given legitimacy by the world, his spokesmen get a pat on the back. 

We are not falling to temptation. When someone threatens to exterminate us, we take that threat seriously, and we will not allow Iran to develop military nuclear capability. Mark my words: We will not allow Iran to develop a military nuclear capability. Not only will we not accept a situation in which Iran has the bomb, but we will not accept them being able to manufacture one as well. There is a big difference between the two," he said.

Meanwhile, Yi praised the potential of Sino-Israeli cooperation Wednesday night at a banquet in the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. "With the Jewish mind, and a Chinese engine, we will build a machine that will reach the skies," he said.

During the event, organized by the Chinese embassy in Israel, the Association to Promote Israel-China ties and other Sino-Israeli groups, Wang emphasized the continuously improving ties between the two countries. "There is a Chinese saying -- true friendship only grows. By my understanding, this is the direction our two nations, who share a long history together, are going. Our goal today is to improve the ties between our countries for children and grandchildren's sake."

"I welcome you to Jerusalem, the eternal and united capital of Israel," Dr. Miriam Adelson told Wang at the banquet. "When countries around the world closed their doors to the Jews during the Holocaust, the Chinese people opened their nation's doors, accepted them with open arms and gave the Jews shelter and protection," she said.

Hebrew University President Professor Menachem Ben-Sasson also spoke at the event. "People ask us -- what is the secret to your success? Well, the secret is our daring to ask questions," he said. Ben-Sasson mentioned the university's archive of Albert Einstein's assorted works. "We uploaded his writings to the Internet in different languages, including Chinese; we had 25 million visitors in the first week, half of them from China."

The 12 Days of Christmas - the Hidden Meaning

There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me. What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas?

This week I received an email with the following . I found it very interesting and thought I'd share it with you. 

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. 

It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.


-The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

-Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

-Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.

-The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.

-The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

-The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

-Seven swans a-swimming represented the seven-fold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

-The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

-Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

-The ten lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.

-The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

-The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

The decision by A&E to take "Duck Dynasty's" Phil Robertson off the air for comments he made on homosexuality and his faith has sparked a nationwide debate.

Meanwhile, the Robertson family is standing behind their patriarch, which means duck season could soon be coming to an end for A&E.

"While some of Phil's unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible," the family said in a statement released late Thursday night. "We have had a successful working relationship with A&E, but as a family we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm."

The reality TV show featuring the Robertson family's redneck charm and duck calls is one of the most popular in cable history, averaging 14 million viewers per episode - and its viewers aren't abandoning the Robertsons now.

More than a 100,000 people have signed a petition on I-Stand-With-Phil.com. And on Facebook, more than a million fans have signed on to a page boycotting A&E until Phil Robertson is returned to the show.

The social media site is coming under fire as well. The administrator for one of the pages supporting "Duck Dynasty" says Facebook locked him out for eight hours before telling him it was just an "accident."

"He was basing his comments... on biblical verse... and these are views that a lot of people hold." Matthew Belloni, executive editor of Hollywood Reporter, said.

Meanwhile, Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, told CNN that Robertson did what any Christian should do.

"All throughout that article -- and by the way, the GQ article was very clear on this -- his concern was to help people to know their need for Christ, and to believe in Christ and to find salvation in Christ," Mohler said.

"And when he was talking about that list of sins he wasn't comparing one thing to another," he continued. "He was doing what the Bible does repeatedly, and that was put out a list of sins that includes all of us so that we know of our need for Christ."

Even Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal weighed in, saying, "The left is tolerant of every viewpoint except those who disagree with them."

Season five of "Duck Dynasty" is set to debut Jan. 15. Filming has already finished, and Phil Robertson is featured in all 10 episodes. It's still unclear how A&E will proceed.
