"Milk and Honey" ✡ Have a Sweet New Year!

You gave them this Land that You swore to their forefathers to give them a Land flowing with milk
and honey.

JEREMIAH (32:22)

Jerusalem Inspiration

Throughout their time in the desert, the Jews were promised by Moses that God would bring them to a land filled with milk and honey. This became the main symbol for the blessing which God bestows upon the Land of Israel. When we dip our apples in honey on Rosh Hashanah, we try to appreciate the source of this sweet blessing. As the holiday draws to a close and the Days of Repentance begin, ushering in a time of deep reflection, heartfelt prayer, and resolutions for change, we remember the extraordinary connection between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel and honor our ancient birthright by striving to become worthy to live within its borders. Learn about Israel in its original Biblical context and understand more about the Holy Land than you ever imagined with our new box-set of the 5 Books of Moses.

"We're seeing more and more, a government that is silencing and censoring of religious views, of religious beliefs and of religious symbols." So states Mark Sharp, legal counsel for the Alliance for Defense of Freedom, responding to the U.S. Postal Service's announcement that it will offer no new religiously themed holiday stamps this year. In Sharp's view, this is "part of the effort to completely drive religion out of the public square."

If you're looking for bad news in the news, you don't have to look far. California lawmakers have approved legislation permitting euthanasia in their state. The heroin epidemic continues to spread across the nation. The scourge of pornography is growing, especially among children.

It is easy for Christians to be discouraged by the trajectory of our culture. But God is working in surprising ways today.

For instance, Muslim refugees in Berlin are converting to Christianity in remarkable numbers. The Chronicle of Higher Education recently published an article titled "Why We Need to Resurrect Our Souls." The Atlantic (not typically a defender of orthodox Christianity) carried a fascinating essay titled "The False Equation of Atheism and Intellectual Sophistication." We often hear that millennials are leaving the church, but a recent study shows that more traditional or liturgical services have great appeal for young people seeking depth and significance.

None of these stories made front-page news. If we base today's hope on today's headlines, we'll usually be disappointed. But it has always been so. Henri Nouwen writes: "Many people live with the unconscious or conscious expectation that eventually things will get better; wars, hunger, poverty, oppression, and exploitation will vanish; and all people will live in harmony. Their lives and work are motivated by that expectation. When this does not happen in their lifetimes, they are often disillusioned and experience themselves as failures.

"But Jesus doesn't support such an optimistic outlook. He foresees not only the destruction of his beloved city Jerusalem but also a world full of cruelty, violence, and conflict. For Jesus there is no happy ending in this world. The challenge of Jesus is not to solve all the world's problems before the end of time but to remain faithful at any cost."

How do we "remain faithful at any cost"?

In Joe Biden's recent interview with Stephen Colbert, the vice president was transparent about his grief following the death of his son Beau. He said that he and his wife have taped a Kierkegaard quote to the mirror: "Faith sees best in the dark."

Here's the larger context from Kierkegaard's The Gospel of Sufferings: "The believer humanly comprehends how heavy the suffering is, but in faith's wonder that it is beneficial to him, he devoutly says: It is light. Humanly he says: It is impossible, but he says it again in faith's wonder that what he humanly cannot understand is beneficial to him [his emphasis]. In other words, when sagacity [worldly wisdom] is able to perceive the beneficialness, then faith cannot see God; but when in the dark night of suffering sagacity cannot see a handbreadth ahead of it, then faith can see God, since faith sees best in the dark."

To paraphrase: when we understand God's ways, faith is easy. When we do not, faith is essential.

Sometimes I Feel Like Jonah - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Sometimes I Feel Like Jonah
- Now Think On This
by Steve Martin

"When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it. But it greatly displeased Jonah and he became angry." Jonah 3:10-4:1.”  NASU

Yes, sometimes I feel like Jonah. I can get tired (angry?) of the continual lack of repentance in our land, and the seemingly non-judgment or inaction of the Lord regarding it. When will enough be enough, and it just end.

I certainly can also understand the disciples reaction about a village’s response, when they asked Jesus if they should call down fire from heaven. As recorded in Luke 9:51-56, “When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem; and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him. But they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem.

When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them." And they went on to another village.” (NASU)

In the first Scripture above written about Jonah and Nineveh, when the Lord called Jonah to travel to that city, to warn the people of impending judgement, he ran the other way, believing why bother, for the Lord would be merciful anyway. He did not want to do what it was going to take, to tell it like it was, as the word from the Lord was to be delivered. The prophet would have rather let them perish for the evil that they had committed. After all, they deserved it.

And the disciples, after seeing that the Samaritans were not receiving Jesus into their midst, because He was a Jew travelling to Jerusalem, they wanted to have them burned alive. This was even after Jesus had been with His team for three years, and had already resurrected. Surely they must have known the Lord’s heart of compassion, and were to be as He had taught them of His love, “…for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them.” Luke 9:56

How often I find myself just wanting the Lord to quickly now put an end to all the sin, all the evil, all the wicked actions that keep going on and on. When Lord, will you finally put a stop to that which is so opposed to You and Your commands, and bring Your Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven? Will it be soon?

But once again I must realize that the Lord saved me as a sinner, waiting for that time when I came to repentance and acceptance of His substitutional, sacrificial death on the cross. He called to me, as He put people in my life who were willing not to judge me with fire and brimstone, but loved me enough to share the Good News of the Gospel with me. I am eternally grateful they did.

As we are now the Lord’s hands and feet on earth, we have been called to share His love to a dying world of sinners, that they too might receive Him, Yeshua HaMashiach, Jesus Christ, into their lives. He has been patiently waiting for those who will yet hear, repent, and receive eternal salvation. He has commissioned us to be the ones to tell them.

Judgment is coming. These last days are revealing the time is drawing to an end. Prophetic words from centuries gone by are coming to pass in our lifetime, before the final preparation and ingathering takes place.

My prayer is that you and I will not allow our hearts to grow cold, and let the dying die, while we wait for His plans to be fulfilled.

“And Jesus answered and said to them: "Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.”

“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake. And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:4-14 NKJV

May the Holy Spirit give us the love of God for the nations. May we pray, seek His face, and do as we have been instructed – to be bold in proclaiming His Word of salvation.

May His Kingdom come. Maranatha Lord Jesus.

Meet the 'Secret Christians of Brooklyn'

"I'm a pastor, but my church isn't weird. I'm not from a scary church." That's how Emily Scott describes St. Lydia's, a congregation recently described by The Atlantic as "the secret Christians of Brooklyn."

Their services are staged as dinner parties. They attract young professionals and homeless people alike. St. Lydia's is designed to emulate early Christian worship, centered on meals and community. Their model is working, because they provide a safe place for people to seek the God their souls so long to know.

Just as our bodies need physical food, so our souls need spiritual nourishment. That's why Jesus called Himself "the bread of life" (John 6:35) and promised water to quench every thirst (John 4:13-14). The worship service you attended yesterday is not sufficient for your soul today. Scripture calls us to "seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!" (Ps. 105:4).

But our souls have an enemy. British minister Samuel Chadwick says: "Satan dreads nothing but prayer. His one concern is to keep the saints from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work, prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil, he mocks our wisdom, but he trembles when we pray."

Since Satan so hates prayer, we can expect him to do all he can to keep us from continued intimacy with our Father. In my experience, he employs four primary strategies.

One: Self-sufficiency. He tries to convince me that I don't need more of God than I have. The enemy wants prayer to be a morning chore, not continued communion with the King of the universe.

Two: Internal distractions. As I set aside time to pray, tasks suddenly come to mind. People and problems begin to crowd my thoughts. I have learned to keep a pad and pen nearby, so I can write down these distractions and focus on my Father.

Three: External interruptions. When I begin to pray, it's amazing how often the phone rings or people knock at the door. That's why we need to arrange for uninterrupted time with our Father—an early morning walk, a closet with no technology, a day in solitude.

Four: The pressure of busyness. Charles Hummel's classic booklet, Tyranny of the Urgent, notes that the urgent and the important are seldom the same. What seems urgent seldom is. And we must refuse the urgent if we would do the important.

It is the same with prayer. The busier we are, the more we need God's strength. I can pick up a book by myself, but I need help to move a bookcase. The more you have to do, the more you need time with the One who can empower you to do it.

A newly-hired lumberjack cut down more trees on his first day than anyone else in the camp. The next day, he fell behind the others. By the third day, his production was so low the foreman asked for an explanation. "I don't understand," he said. "I'm working as hard as ever." With a flash of insight, the foreman asked, "When last did you sharpen your axe?" "Sharpen my axe?" the lumberjack replied. "I don't have time to sharpen my axe."

10th Planned Parenthood Video: 'Oh My God! Everything We Provide Is Fresh'

10th Planned Parenthood Video: 'Oh My God, Gonads! Everything We Provide Is Fresh'

Join us on our podcast each weekday for an interesting story, well told, from Charisma News. Listen at charismapodcastnetwork.com.

The fourth episode in a new documentary web series and 10th video by The Center for Medical Progress features several top-level Planned Parenthood executives discussing the organization's secretive practices around aborted fetal parts harvesting.
The video includes comments from Deborah VanDerhei, the national director of the organization's Consortium of Abortion Providers, describing the harvesting of fetal body parts as "donation for remuneration."
The "Human Capital" documentary web series, produced by The Center for Medical Progress, integrates expert interviews, eyewitness accounts, and real-life undercover interactions to explore different themes within Planned Parenthood's sale of aborted fetal tissue. Episode 4, "Planned Parenthood Federation of America's Criminal Enterprise," launched this week.
The video highlights conversations with Dr. Carolyn Westhoff, senior medical adviser for PPFA; Dr. Vanessa Cullins, vice president for External Medical Affairs for PPFA; and Deborah VanDerhei, national director for the Consortium of Abortion Providers (CAPS) at PPFA.
"We've just been working with people who want particular tissues, like, you know, they want cardiac, or they want eyes, or they want neural," says Westhoff to a prospective fetal organ buyer. "Certainly, everything we provide—oh, gonads! Oh my God, gonads. Everything we provide is fresh." Westhoff continues, "Obviously, we would have the potential for a huge P.R. issue in doing this," before offering to introduce the buyers to "national office abortion people" from Planned Parenthood.
VanDerhei is the national director for CAPS, an influential committee within Planned Parenthood that drives abortion policy across the organization. VanDerhei refers to payments for fetal tissue as "donation for remuneration," which carries the connotation of financial reward or benefit without regard for actual expenses. VanDerhei explains, "I have been talking to the executive director of the National Abortion Federation, we're trying to figure this out as an industry, about how we're going to manage remuneration, because the headlines would be a disaster."
"Is this really worth getting—I don't even know what in general, what a specimen generally brings in?" VanDerhei later asks a prospective buyer. When she is told $100 per specimen, she remarks, "But we have independent colleagues who generate a fair amount of income doing this."
VanDerhei suggests that Planned Parenthood goes to great lengths to avoid leaving a paper trail about their fetal tissue activity: "It's an issue that you might imagine we're not really that comfortable talking about on email."
In a conversation recorded between VanDerhei and Vanessa Russo, Compliance Program Administrator for Planned Parenthood Keystone in Pennsylvania, Russo argues, "A company like this that wants to give our organization money for the tissue—I think that that's a valid exchange, and that that's okay."
VanDerhei nods her head up and down and affirms, "Mhm."
The sale or purchase of human fetal tissue is a federal felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to $500,000 (42 U.S.C. 289g-2).
Vanessa Cullins, the vice president of External Medical Affairs, seems fully aware of the criminal exposure that fetal body parts sales present to Planned Parenthood: "This is important. This could destroy your organization and us, if we don't time those conversations correctly," she tells a prospective buyer.
Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the country, responsible for 327,000 abortions every year, and receives $528 million in taxpayer money each year. "From email black-outs to contorted oxymorons like 'donation for remuneration,' the lengths to which Planned Parenthood leadership will go to cover-up their illegal sale of aborted baby parts are nothing less than the desperation of a guilty conscience," notes David Daleiden, Project Lead for CMP.
"Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards openly admits they receive '$60 per tissue specimen,' and their contracts with StemExpress offer payments per fetus 'determined in the clinic to be usable.' Planned Parenthood runs their abortion and baby parts business in open disregard for the law and should be prosecuted immediately. Their taxpayer funding should be reassigned to Federally Qualified Health Centers, which provide more and comprehensive health services at locations outnumbering Planned Parenthood 20 to 1."
