Back cover text:

Throughout our lives, God keeps His hand on our shoulders and nudges us on to more than what we could ever realize. I am excited to share how He did it this with me, and am confident mine will be a story you’ll be able to relate to.

As I unveil my story, think back to those times when you knew there was something more but you just couldn’t put your finger on it. You knew deep down that life wasn’t what the TV sitcoms portrayed it to be. In our souls there is the hope, the cry for more, that someday questions will be answered and promises fulfilled if we just kept plugging away at what we know to do.

In The Promise I share my 40 year journey with you, and show you that dreams do come true. Though Peter Pan isn’t real, the Lord, the One Who created us, certainly is, and He has a plan in place for each one of us. When you are done reading this story, my prayer is that you too will know more of that good plan and His purpose for you.

His regular “Ahava Love Letter,” posted both on the Love For His People Blog and Facebook, feature his encouraging letters of spiritual enrichment, plus selected photos and commentary. In addition to The Promise, Steve has also written Leadership Through Love and Ahava Love Letters, the first edition having 52 of his letters.

“Have your delight in the Lord,
and He will give you
the desires of your heart.
Trust also in Him,
and He will do it.”

Psalm 37:3,4

DEDICATION

To all those who have a desire and a dream that is yet to be fulfilled, but continue to hang onto the promise the Lord has given you – I dedicate this book.

In agreement with the Bible verse that I have printed on a note card standing upright on my home computer desk, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:0, NIV), I declare that He will do it.

As surely as the Lord God of Israel lives,He will bring it to pass!!!

We’ve Only Just Begun…

Back in the ‘70’s, when music was still decent, and you could really understand the words, a brother and a sister, the Carpenters, came out with a popular song,  We’ve Only Just Begun.  For those of us around at that time, songs like this gave us some hope, as we made our way through grade school or high school.  Deep in our souls, whether we realized it back then or not, something, or Someone, was calling after us, and songs on the radio helped draw us on.

Not sure which way to go at times, we knew something was still possible, even as our parents sought after the “Almighty Dollar”, and the Sunday service was at least a place the family, which still looked like one, went to on Sundays.  Friday night football games, followed by the sock-hop (finally realized that we had to wear socks, not our shoes, because of the gym wooden floor), gave us potential stability, after coming out of the ‘60’s and before the ‘80’s hit.

Through it all, Someone kept His hand on our shoulders, and nudged us on to more than what we would ever realize, before now.  And then…boom! The answer comes in an unexpected way.

As I unveil this story, think back to those times that you knew there was something more, but you just couldn’t put your hand on it.  You knew, deep down, that life wasn’t just what Walter Cronkite said it was every night on the CBS news, or that the faith and love shown by John Boy to Grandpa, Jim Bob, and the other twenty Waltons wasn’t just for their family.  Deep down in our souls, the hope, the cry for more, would someday be answered and fulfilled, if we just kept plugging away at what we did know.

I want you to share my journey with me, as I look back over the last forty years, and you see that dreams do come true, and that though Peter Pan isn’t real, the Lord, the One Who created us, is, and He has a plan in place for each one of us.  And when you are done reading this story, you too will know that…we’ve only just begun.

Ahava Love Letter - "The Cities"

                    “The Cities”

“When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,
saying, "If you had known in this day, even you, the things which
make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.”
Luke 19:41-42 NASU

Dear family of friends,

Mondays are a normal day of prayer and fasting for me. I am grateful Bible teacher Derek Prince taught that in the 1970's. I have tried to adhere to it these many decades, though sometimes I didn’t succeed.

Derek Prince -
"Shaping History Through Prayer and Fasting"

As I recently walked that normal prayer lunch time, the uptown city sidewalks became my partnering moments with the Lord, interceding in tongues through His Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh in Hebrew.)

Many were going to their mid-day appointments, concentrating on conversations with co-workers. Others sat on benches, only caring about where their next meal was coming from.

Charlotte, NC - Tryon Street. On my way...

I just kept praying, knowing Jesus' (Yeshua’s) love was for all of them. The sense of knowing He was grieving along with many, whose real hurt was maybe hidden behind the smiles, touched my heart.

Some I hoped were rejoicing and giving thanks for this day, believing that their Savior had good plans for them each day. But I think those numbers were few among the crowd. And so I walked on. Praying on.

Inhabitants of cities around the world need the Lord. They need to know of His salvation, mercy and love. The vast majority of cities know nothing of His real nature. They only see and believe the lies having been passed down through the centuries. The lies telling them that “The Man upstairs”, as some call Him, has little to do with their life.

Or that if God is so loving, why are all the wars, hatred, and evil going on daily in the cities world-wide? “Can’t He do something about it?” they might even ask.

The clear message of the Gospel is that God is a loving Father, who sent His only Son Jesus to live among us, die in order for us to live, and rose from the grave, to alone be the only Savior of the world.

Isaiah 53:5

“There is salvation in no one else! For there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by whom we must be saved!” (Acts 4:12 Complete Jewish Bible)

The truth shared, to each as he or she will listen, can break the bonds that entangle so many, and give freedom to the spirit, soul and body. As we pray daily for our families, our cities, our nation, and those in Israel, we will see His Kingdom established.

I believe my regular fasting and prayers are having an effect, and so I will continue to do so. Maybe you will join me? See some results for yourself.

Ahava (love in Hebrew) to my family of friends,

Steve Martin

Ahava Love Letter (#53) - "We Speak To Nations"

“We Speak To Nations”

“So I give thanks to you, Adonai, among the nations;
sing praises to Your name.” (2 Sam 22:50 CJB
Complete Jewish Bible)

Dear family of friends,

When my good wife Laurie and I went to China in 2002, we were representing Derek Prince Ministries, along with a small USA group smuggling in Chinese Bibles and Derek's teaching books. These particular treasured nuggets had been translated into Mandarin Chinese. In my personal carry-on I had also brought along the latest Integrity Music's CD of the Month.

The disc had just come in the mail a few days before we left on this adventurous journey, so I was as excited as ever to hear this new one. It had become the newest edition in my 14 year long subscription collection of Integrity's Hosanna! Music. (Thank you Michael Coleman for your leadership at Integrity!)

That specific praise and worship CD, then rotating in my portable player, was Lakewood's "We Speak To Nations". (IPods had just come out the year before. Steve Jobs' latest Apple big tech craving was a bit above my budget.) The title song was also "We Speak To Nations."

As I sat on the 22 hour train ride from Guangzhou to Beijing, I played this song over and over again. The repeat button just stay on. And during that literal full day stretch of time, the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh) made sure the sound and words would sink deep into my spirit. I am grateful He did.

During those long hours on the tracks (both train and CD - pun intended) I literally had tears running down my face, while I sat listening with ear buds on. I didn’t want to awaken the others as they slept.

The sound of the nations was calling out to my heart.

We can speak to nations in many ways. These days it is primarily through social media. But even still, a main format can still be by singing, in person.

As worship leaders who love Jesus (Yeshua), and thus the nations, my wife and I are committed to sing in and to the nations. Our hearts and eyes are especially lazar focused on Israel, whom we especially love.

And...Lord willing too, we plan on taking the Ahava Love Band with us to Jerusalem in 2014 - to do just that – sing His praise and worship in Eretz Yisrael (Land of Israel)!

Maybe there will be other locations the Lord will send us to, in addition, as we speak to nations.

Ahava (love in Hebrew) to my family of friends,

Steve Martin
Founder/President

Ahava Love Letter (#50) - “Come & Behold Him”

 “Come & Behold Him”

"I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near;
a star shall come forth from Jacob,  a scepter shall
rise from Israel,  and shall crush through the
forehead of Moab, and tear down all the sons of Sheth.”
(Num. 24:17 NASB)

Dear family of friends,

It must have been around 2 a.m. that Friday night, way back in 1998, at least fifteen years ago.

Our worship team, gathered again for The Watch of The Lord in Charlotte, NC, at All Nations Church (then meeting at Westinghouse Blvd. and Granite Street), had just finished playing a full four hours of non-stop worship songs.

Mahesh and Bonnie Chavda, along with several dedicated, rotating worship and prayer teams, loved meeting with the Lord Yeshua (Jesus) and Ruach HaKodesh, His Holy Spirit. He came each time.

We had been “doing” The Watch since 1994, meeting every Friday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., with full praise and worship times (I mean hours!), praying for all needs, our nation and Israel, laying hands on the gathered sick, sharing communion, and maybe getting a wink or two on the two inch pads of green, yet cold steel, church chairs.

We loved it. We had become addicted to His Presence.

But there was something special about this moment, 2 a.m. that morning. I could “hear” the silence in the room after we had stopped singing. And then waited.

John O’Leary, back at the 24 channel sound board, put in a CD, as routine. (Sometimes people get nervous when they aren’t being stimulated by surrounding noise, or movement. So we start “doing” something. Afraid He will speak to us?)

The song that played was very familiar to me. Being a foundational subscriber to Integrity’s “Hosanna! Music”, since its monthly cassette inception in 1984 (and always wearing out every tape), was John Chisum’s “Come and Behold Him.”

Vicky Rose, a beautiful, full of grace and humility worship dancer, got up in the far southwest corner, in front of our “Western Wall”. It had been mounted on the room's wall, constructed of strong cardboard and painted with brown and gray rocks and crevices, modeled after The Kotel in Jerusalem.

She started swirling around in her white, full length dress, arms uplifted in praise and admiration to our Lord, her face beaming with emotional gratitude.

I looked over. My heart leaped. Tears started coming to my eyes. His Presence was filling my entire being with tenderness, mercy, grace, goodness, love and compassion. I was overwhelmed with Him too.

After three minutes, the song finished. Vicky quietly sat down.

I also took a seat, after walking off the platform, and continuing to experience a moment in the Lord’s arms that I will never forget. I was beholding Him. In some of His glory.

My friends, those days are coming back. We are going to come into His Manifested Presence and behold Him. All else around us will be as nothing, as we see Him for Who He is – Our Father, our Lover, our Redeemer and Comforter.

And we will also know Him as the Roaring Lion of Judah, the King of kings and the Lord of lords, the Mighty One of Israel, Who will conquer all fear, discouragement, despair, injustice, even while just holding us in His arms.

“Come and behold Him, come see His glory, come with an honest heart to see all He is.
We will discover all of His beauty. His light will burn away all the darkness we’ve known.

Come and behold Him. Come see His mercy. Come find His tenderness reaching to you.
Just as a mirror shows our reflection His Word and Spirit come now reflecting His love.”

Come Lord Yeshua. Maranatha! Come!

Ahava to my family of friends,

Steve Martin
Founder/President

Full lyrics:

Come and behold Him
Come see His glory
Come with an honest heart
To see all He is.

We will discover
All of His beauty
His light will burn away
All the darkness we’ve known.

Chorus:
Come and behold Him,
Come and behold Him.
Come with an honest heart
See all He is.

Come and behold Him
Lay down before Him.
Come with an honest heart
See all He is.

(V2)
Come and behold Him.
Come see His mercy
Come find His tenderness
Reaching to you.

Just as a mirror
Shows our reflection
His Word and Spirit come
Now reflecting His love.

Chorus
