Seasons, Numbers & Time - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Seasons, Numbers & Time

Now Think On This
Steve Martin

“Now Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter." And Laban said, "It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me." So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her.” (Genesis 29:18-20 NKJV)

In an earlier message I wrote on numbers, and shared how the Lord pays close attention to numbers. He is exact in His attempt to teach us His ways. He uses numbers in every aspect of our life, beginning with the date we are born, the length of years we live; even with the sunrise and sunset, as the heavens daily declare His glory and presence all around us.

He is the God of all, who delights in order and organized systems. As is quite the opposite of our enemy, our God has set plans, purposes and alignments. He is not chaotic, disorderly, or confused. He knows Who He is, what He is, and how He reveals Himself to us. I AM is His Name, high above all.

So how do seasons and numbers come into play? All throughout Scripture, from Genesis 1:1 to the end of the Book at the Revelation of Jesus 22:21, we can see how orderly the Living God of Israel operates. That is the way He is. The seasons He gives to us on this earth, and the times which are numbered and also laid out for us, can draw us closer to Him, when we realize just how interested and concerned He is, with seasons, numbers and time.

When I looked up just the number seven in the concordance, I was amazed at the quantity of Scriptures which that number alone is found in. One such verse, which I included in the beginning of this message, as stated in the Torah, is written, “Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her.” (Genesis 29:20 NKJV – and then Jacob had to work yet another seven years after that – Gen. 29:30!)

Do you think the Lord knew that one set of seven years, and then another, were in store for Jacob?  Do you think God the Father just let it happen to His servant, one of the three main Patriarchs of the Jews, while He attended to other concerns in the vast universe? I don’t think so. As in my life, I believe the Lord knows exactly our times and seasons, and wants us to seek Him to know them too. He wants to further reveal Himself to us, day in and day out.

“…and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and exist…” (Acts 17:26-28 NASU)

Speaking of the number seven, I know it is an important one in the Lord’s counting system. Seven represents completeness and perfection. If you do a Bible study on that specific number, you will see what, where and how the Lord has used it.

In my own life, I have looked back at the increments of seven years in my life, and how those years have brought a completion of one season and the start of another. Often a major family move occurred. I can definitely see the hand of the Lord in it all.

Just going back to 1973 – my high school graduation year – was a clear end of one segment of my life, and the start of another. Then in August of 1980, our family moved from Illinois to Michigan, to begin a new life with a church in East Lansing (Shiloh Fellowship, later New Covenant Christian Church). It also meant a new job, new house, and new friends.

In 1987, seven years later to the exact month (August) we moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as I started my new position with Derek Prince Ministries, assisting Mahesh Chavda Ministries in my extra time.

Seven years later, in 1994, again in the summer, we moved with Mahesh Chavda Ministries to Charlotte, NC. See how cleverly I planned all this out???!! No. It was the Lord Who did it!

In 2001, yet another seven year segment later, I was back at Derek Prince Ministries, who had also moved to Charlotte from Florida, in the mid 1990’s.

So what happened in 2008? I was in the exact middle of five years of service as the USA Director of Vision For Israel (Barry & Batya Segal). Little did I know, I was in preparation for our own ministry, that of Love For His People, which wasn’t even in my mind at that time. But it was in the heart of my Father. And He had been preparing me for it all those 24 years serving other ministries.

For me, 2017 will complete yet another seven years - from the time Love For His People was founded in April of 2010. I am believing another major marker in my life history will be laid down, and the start of a new season in the Lord.

What about you? Have you ever gone back and looked at your life, noting certain years and what natural and spiritual events occurred, as the Lord was directing your steps? Take time and do it. I think you will be amazed, and give glory to God for His hand on your head, as He directed your feet, whether you realized it or not.

We serve a great God, the Maker of the Universe. The heavenlies, immense star systems, thousands of galaxies and beyond, all speak of Him and His divine order. And yet, with all that, He has ordained our specific times and seasons.

Let Him show you just how He has also done so in your life. I think you will be very grateful, and give thanks for His love.

Now think on this, in the love of Jesus,

LOVE FOR HIS PEOPLE FEATURED BOOK

Paperback $5.95  Kindle $1.99

Throughout our lives, God keeps His hand on our shoulders and nudges us on to more than what we could ever realize. I am excited to share how He did it this with me, and am confident mine will be a story you’ll be able to relate to.

As I unveil my story, think back to those times when you knew there was some¬thing more but you just couldn’t put your finger on it. You knew deep down that life wasn’t what the TV sitcoms portrayed it to be. In our souls there is the hope, the cry for more, that someday questions will be answered and promises fulfilled if we just kept plugging away at what we know to do.

In The Promise I share my 40 year journey with you, and show you that dreams do come true. Though Peter Pan isn’t real, the Lord, the One Who created us, certainly is, and He has a plan in place for each one of us. When you are done reading this story, my prayer is that you too will know more of that good plan and His purpose for you.

"Lessons from My Spiritual Fathers" - James W. Goll

"Lessons from My Spiritual Fathers"
James W. Goll, Franklin, TN
The Elijah List

Fatherhood determines identity and identity releases security. Security produces a culture where it is safe to be unique, an environment where dreaming is the norm, and an expectation that dreams really do come true!
Well, that is my perspective from the chair I sit in today. I did not always know or experience these principles, as I grew up in a rather unsafe home with verbal abuse occurring almost every day. We each have a personal pilgrimage – and for a moment I would like to invite you into a window of mine. Jesus I loved without reservation, but the premise that God the Father was a "good God" unfortunately was a foreign concept to me. (Photo of Spiritual Fathers via James Goll)

Imprints From Spiritual Fathers

Unlike some, I have not had just one major, primary "spiritual father." But I have had the distinct honor of walking with and being impacted by several different fathers in the faith throughout my walk with the Lord, which has included over 40 years of full-time ministry.

As I grew up in the things of the Spirit, there were many teachers but few fathers and mothers. In this generation, I believe we actually have fewer teachers, but a plethora of authentic fathers and mothers and even grandfathers and grandmothers in the faith. One of my great joys over the years has been to nestle up to one of these spiritual veterans, speak honor to them and ask questions.

Yes, ask questions!

Perhaps questions like, "Do you have a life Scripture verse that has guided you?" "What was one of the most difficult challenges you ever faced?" "What moves of the Holy Spirit marked your life?" "If you were to do it all over again, what would you do differently?" "Tell me about your family?" "What legacy do you want to leave for the next generation?"

I have always asked questions. Maybe it has been one of the keys to help me keep going in my roller coaster life and ministry. My mom always said I was the most curious child – asking questions like, "Mommy, where do babies come from?" Ha! I remember those days of wonder and awe. And I still live in those days of wonder and awe. You can too!

Word-based Discipleship

I always want to be a Word-based disciple. If I had no relational mentors, I would still have my Bible. I would still have the heroes of the faith inscribed in this Holy Book. They are the fathers and mothers I look to the most. They always have been, and frankly, always will be. (Photo of Don Finto with James Goll)

I have also been an avid reader. I keep feeding this insatiable desire for knowledge, lessons from history, and a desire to know and experience more of God by reading. Thus today, I have a vast library that is filled with both old books and new ones (Matthew 13:52). These books have acted as some of the primary spiritual mentors that the Holy Spirit has used as tools in my life. The shadows of these great men and women of God still exist today.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons I am so committed to writing. Books have been my primary source of teaching and mentoring. In one of my many journals I have written that when I am 70 years old I will compose a book called "Lessons from the Woodshed!" I can't wait to write it. But I can't yet – I guess I still might have a few more "behind the scenes" encounters! Ouch!

Key Scripture Verses

So here are some basic Scriptures to use as stakes in the ground in the process of establishing your own relational culture of honor as it pertains to fathers and mothers of the Faith. These Scriptures are immoveable markers in my life.

Ephesians 6:2-3 "HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise), SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH."

Psalm 68:5-6 "A father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows, is God in His holy habitation. God makes a home for the lonely; He leads out the prisoners into prosperity, only the rebellious dwell in a parched land."

2 Kings 2:9-14 When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you." And Elisha said, "Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me." He said, "You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so." As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to Heaven.

Elisha saw it and cried out, "My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" And he saw Elijah no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. He also took up the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and returned and stood by the bank of the Jordan. He took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and struck the waters and said, "Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?" And when he also had struck the waters, they were divided here and there; and Elisha crossed over.

ElijahList Prophetic Resources

Four Key Fathers that Imprinted My Life

By the Lord's grace I continue to cultivate relationships with forerunners. In recent years this list has included C. Peter Wagner, Don Finto, John Sanford and others. (I am not attempting to name drop, but am speaking in truth of the authentic relational impact of these men!) I would also add to the list many of my "peers" who are some of the dread champions of the faith in our generation. And I have not even mentioned the Women Leaders who have impacted my life! (I will hold that one for another time – but it is extensive for sure!)

So, you ask, who have been some of the most significant relational mentors in your life? Who helped shape your Spiritual DNA while your cement was still wet? Glad you asked. With great joy I share them with you!

• Derek Prince – The Late International Bible Teacher

I observed and learned more from this brilliant British Bible teacher and scholar than anyone. These lessons included themes like: Prayer and Fasting Shapes History, God's Heart for Israel, Church Government, Deliverance, Breaking of Curses, and so much more. The thing that probably impacted me the most was his reverence towards and relationship with the Word of God.

• Mahesh Chavda – Man of Prayer, Fasting and Miracles

My dear friend and mentor Mahesh Chavda. Where do I begin? I carried his briefcase, coffee mug and even had the honor of bringing more comfortable shoes for him to wear when he stood in healing lines for hours. He has been one of my primary mentors in the anointing, fasting as a lifestyle and obeying the voice of the Holy Spirit.

• Bob Jones – The Late Seer of Seers

Mercy! Where do I begin to describe the impact Papa Bob Jones had on my life? I got joined at the hip with this unusual man in 1983; he rocked my world and I am still left shaking from that quake. Dreams, visions, angelic encounters were Bob's daily bread. I absorbed, watched and learned a lot from this man who was so "heavenly minded he was of earthly good."

• Dick Simmons – Intercessor behind the Scenes

This elderly man today might be lesser known before men than some, but he is a greatly known before the throne of God. I learned and entered into greater authority in intercession, the power of "reminding God of His Word", and the value of Church history through the hours of personal intercession I spent with this forerunner. His shadow has deeply impacted my life, ministry and global reach.

I have said for years, that the Holy Spirit did not give me one mentor but different ones for different purposes. These are but four of the godly men that the Lord has brought into my life. Oh my, none of them are the same – not even close. But what they have carried in common is a love for God, His people, His purposes and the integrity of His Word.

Thank You Lord for the impact of these Fathers in the Faith in my life, and the opportunity to share with others what has been imparted to me. May the ceiling of my generation truly become the next generation's floor!

I also pray that each of you will glean from the lessons of the mentors that God has placed within your path – through His Word, books, and personal relationships. May God continue to raise up fathers and mothers of faith who will mentor others – including you!

“Release” Now Think On This by Steve Martin

“Release!”
Now Think On This
by Steve Martin

“At daybreak, the court judges sent officers with the instructions, "Release these men." The jailer gave Paul the message, "The judges sent word that you're free to go on your way. Congratulations! Go in peace!" Acts 16:35-36 (THE MESSAGE)

In the late 1980’s Laurie and I, along with our four kids, lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As part of my being on the Derek Prince Ministries staff, our likely church choice was Good News Church. That was Derek’s home base from his worldly travels. And because of his time away so many months each year, along with the other apostolic teams of Mahesh Chavda and Jim Croft, the local elders had asked a pastor by the name of Geoff Buck to come from Carmel, CA and serve. Geoff did come, and was a great pastor and teacher, with a prophetic gifting too, whom we much appreciated.

One of Geoff’s prophetic words on a Sunday morning got into my spirit. It was a word one receives at a particular time and your response is, "Yes, that is good.” And then the Holy Spirit implants that into your heart, and seems to sear it into your brain’s storage files. It is a rhema word, one fresh from the Lord to you, that you seem to never forget.

Geoff spoke a prophetic word about the “silver-haired” men and women of God, who would come into the fulfillment of their calling once they reached the age when the hairs on their head had turned to silver. Being my hair at the time was still a solid brown, being less than 40 years old, I knew the time coming was for a distant future in our lives. But the word was planted, and grew over the past decades.

With my earthly time period of 60 years coming real close on this planet, for this head of hair, I have already experienced the silver-haired reality, but am longing for more. Many of you are too. And as my good friend Morris Ruddick likes to say, and write, there is plenty of “something more” we are desiring ahead for us.

The Lord God of Israel is known for taking young adults in their 20’s and 30’s, speaking a word to them that gets into their spirit, and then using decades of reality living to train, prepare, bring increase of wisdom, and more fully relying on His strength (for the Lord knows our physical strength is waning!) to bring about His purposes and plans through them. We have been so prepared. We are so ready for the release!

As things begin to open up, with ministry opportunities, time and resources to go beyond the 40 hour weekly job, my sense is that those years of longing for the release are coming upon many of us. Having spent the long hours in morning prayer, attending weekly church classes and weekend conferences along the way, our time “on the bench” is concluding, and the launch is most definitely coming.

Daily I have been even more fervently praying for the release from the daily jobs both Laurie and I continue to faithfully serve in, anticipating that time when that will be done. The open doors, allowing us not to be restrained by the needed commitment to these hourly jobs, will be the path we are walking through, to go to the nations. I firmly believe that the time is at hand.

Many of you too have had the same longing, the same calling, the same urge from Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit), these many decades. As Moses was released after 40 years in the desert, as Joseph was released after his time in Egypt, as Jesus was released after His 30 years of training, so we will be released into the greater purposes of our Father. We have been prepared. We are ready.

The time of the silver-hairs has come. Our generation is going to take the nations for the Lord, to lead the generation that will follow behind us, and to do great exploits for the Mighty God of Israel Whom we have faithfully served all these years.

It is not so much a wake-up call for us, as it is a “Here I am, send me now Lord!” cry that is going to be fulfilled.

Release is coming!

Chinese Bamboo Tree - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Chinese Bamboo Tree
Steve Martin

“However, we want each one of you to keep showing the same diligence right up to the end, when your hope will be realized; so that you will not become sluggish, but will be imitators of those who by their trust and patience are receiving what has been promised.”
Hebrews 6:11-12 CJB

I first heard the story of the Chinese bamboo tree in the late 1990’s. As the administrator of All Nations Church in Charlotte, NC, pastored by Mahesh and Bonnie Chavda, others and myself were anticipating the growth in the church membership. All involved with the new church plant in this Carolina region, begun in 1994, were working hard, giving what each had been gifted to do, in leadership, service, and care for the people.

Mahesh spoke one Sunday morning, and again at the all-night prayer time that Friday night following, called the Watch of the Lord, about the Chinese bamboo tree. It was an encouraging word, both to the church as a group, and to individuals specifically. Myself included.

In helping us visualize what can happen in the spiritual, by looking at natural examples the Lord gives us, Mahesh explained the amazing characteristics of this particular plant species. He spoke of how it is most often the way the Lord starts and grows a work that He has initiated. If He birthed it, He will see that it thrives, as we hear and obey along the way. But the way isn’t what we always think it will be. Or at least hope it will be.

Briefly, this particular bamboo, after being planted as a sprout, is watered, fertilized, watered, fertilized, watered, fertilized, again and again and again. Year after year. But there is no visible evidence that anything is happening. During that time, it certainly can be very challenging to one’s faith, especially if you are the one hauling the water and the fertilizer!

Year one passes. Nothing seen. Year two comes and goes. Nothing. But yet you remain faithful, believing the unseen will become the seen.

Year three. “Nada” (as is “nothing” in Spanish.) Year four - “Niet” (“no” in Russian.) Year five – “klum” (nothing) in Hebrew. But year five!

In a 23 day period, the Chinese bamboo explodes upward 22 feet into the sky. And in the short period of six weeks total, it can reach 80 feet! Remarkable! World Book Encyclopedia records that one bamboo plant can grow three feet in a simple twenty-four-hour period.

The question is then asked – did it grow 80 feet in six weeks or 80 feet in five years? I’m saying the later.

During that five year period, the root system, unseen, was being developed. Once the time had come to shoot upwards, the foundation had already been laid. This would then sustain the height and weight of the full grown tree. In addition to the upward growth, shoots had been sent out, also below ground level. This multiplication can come up through the soil up to ten feet away.

What a natural visual for us in the spiritual. Builds your faith, right? You who have been laboring, faithfully, in the natural, all the time hoping, believing to see the increase come in the spiritual. Prayer, reading the Lo

You have been waiting. You have been doing. You have been crying out to the Lord for more results.

The time is coming. For you, it may be the 5th year now.

God the Father has given us examples of those who have gone before us – Joseph, David, even Yeshua (Jesus) Himself. Each had to spend the time needed to first develop the character, before the time of the release. They then had the capacity for strength, wisdom and love to hold the weight of the assignment He had for them. As for them, so for you - that eternal purpose He has for you.

My prayer is that you will not quit in the third year. That you will keep believing through the fourth year. And that you will get the reward in that fifth year.

Our God is a faithful God. His promises are true to you.

Ahava,

Steve Martin

Leadership Through Love - Chapter 6 - "The Visionaries Need You!" (Steve Martin)

           Chapter 6
The Visionaries Need You!

-         They dream it - but you really make it happen
-         It takes a team. Not the Lone Ranger concept.
 -    The big head won’t get far without the neck
             (or heads will roll)

Did you ever see the Headless Horseman movie? The one who rides around in the woods on the horse during the night? (I guess since he can’t see, it doesn’t matter if it is day or night though, huh?)

Now imagine a head riding around on a horse without a neck, or without the rest of the body. Maybe it could happen in a sci-fi movie, but not in a business or ministry.

Visionaries dream the dreams, speak the dreams, share the dreams, and desire the dreams to come about. But without you, the other leadership, administrator and the support team (the rest of the body), not much will happen. The Lord has purposely set it in place that His whole Body will be needed for His work to be fulfilled.

You are a very vital part of the work, and without you doing your part, the visionary may not see his or her dream come to fruition. And without you realizing your importance and place in this part of the body, it most likely won’t happen. Or at least not to the extent that the Lord knows it can be, and wants it to be.

Without the neck to support the head, which will then allow the head to move about, the head may end up just “rolling around”, or being the Headless Horseman riding through the woods, trying to make the dream or vision happen. (Or is this the real picture when we hear or say that the “heads will roll”? A bit comical it is, I think.)

Visionaries need the administrators. They need the team. They can’t “move” without them – in the natural nor in the spiritual.

When I was a younger man, I was with the second ministry that I was blessed to work with, Mahesh Chavda Ministries. Early on in the job as the administrator, I was a bit shaky and lacking much needed confidence. Since 1978, when I first met Mahesh Chavda in LaSalles-Peru, Illinois, I had  a real desire to work with this ministry, but after a number of what I thought were “closed doors”, it looked like it was not going to happen.

The Lord had been the One who opened this door, in a very clear way earlier, but the right timing had to come to pass, and both sides involved needed to have confirming words that this was indeed the Lord. Unknown to me at the beginning, I would serve with this ministry team for 14 years. A good foundational building for the long term needed to be established, and it was important that we each realized this, as much as we were capable of knowing it.

We see in part, and know in part. So often the Lord needs to give us confirming words of encouragement along the way, to help us keep going, and do what is necessary to keep building the spiritual building.

Two prophetic words were spoken to me, one prior to my coming on staff with MCM, and one during the initial years. The first one occurred during the summer of 1990, in Kansas City, where I had gone with my family to assist Mahesh Chavda at a conference, while on our vacation. Nine months earlier I was supposed to have started with Mahesh Chavda Ministries, but what looked like a “death blow” to the connection had taken place, leaving me almost without a job either at Derek Prince Ministries or MCM. My family and I were thus preparing to move from Fort Lauderdale back to either the Midwest, in the land where Laurie and I grew up, or to Charlotte, NC, where things seemed to be happening spiritually.

At the end of the conference where we were at in Kansas City, I had gone up to the platform to help “catch” those who were “slain in the Spirit” during the prayer time. Jim Goll, one of the leaders and speakers of the host Kansas City Fellowship, and having a well known prophetic ministry, came over to me at the end of the prayer time, and spoke this very encouraging word, which put faith back into my heart.

“You are the very one whom this minister needs, to do that which the Lord wants to have done through him. There is not another at this time. It is you whom he needs as the administrator. You have what he needs. You are the man, not another.”

Five months later the Lord’s time came to pass, for me to come on full time on the team of Mahesh and Bonnie Chavda, as the Administrator. But during that long five months (and even during the times of doubt that still came later), I made it a point to re-read this prophetic word that had kept me hoping and waiting for the right time to come.

Another encouraging word was spoken to me within the first year in this position. Wanting to do the best I could, with my heart desiring to see Africa, Israel, and the other nations touched that this ministry had an affect in, I had concerns that I still didn’t have what was needed for the job. With only one year of college, no degree, and other “lacks” and skills that the world says you need to be an administrator, the concerns seemed understandable and justified.

Bonnie, who I considered my pastor in certain aspects, believing she understood many things I was going through in trying to serve properly, spoke a word to me “out of the blue”. As I was doing yard work around their home, as part of my duties, she came up to me and said that my administrative skills weren’t just something I had learned in the natural, but was indeed a spiritual gift that the Lord had given me. I had a gift from the Lord, which was in administration. (The Scriptures call it the “gift of helps” as one description.)

That was the first time I had ever heard that. I thought the administrative skills, knowledge and wisdom that I had were strictly due to my upbringing, which certainly had its important part, or the “learning on-the-job” that I had received in my prior fifteen years of management.

What this did was reveal to me that the Lord had placed me in this spiritual position. It was His gifts given to me, for His purposes to be fulfilled, that enabled me to do the job that needed to be done. My lack of natural training was “overlooked” because His Holy Spirit, working in and through me, gave me wisdom and understanding to support the visionary and the ministry.

What I came to understand even more, as the Holy Spirit continued to bring understanding to this gift in my life, was that this gift is one of the foundational stones necessary to build a strong building, and support the work placed upon it. He continued to show me the need that exits within the body of Christ, requiring this gifting, and even more specifically, those who are called to be the visionaries and whom serve in the apostolic work, need this gifting.

The head needs the neck to rest on, move about with, and be a connector to the rest of the body in the church, or the business staff.

Hey, the visionaries need you, the administrators, staff leaders and all the rest! Do your part!
