Ahava - What Does It Mean? (Hebrew word)

The word "AHAVA" in Hebrew
- love in English

Love, Jewish Style

By Ahuva Bloomfield

Hebrew, as one may know, is considered by the Bible to be the first language. It is the language through which God spoke in creating the world. Hence, Hebrew was not just created by God, but utilized by God in creating the world. Much wisdom is attributed to the words and letters in the Hebrew language.

Understanding the concepts that are invested in words can aid us in our own lives. As an interesting example, the word "love" which is thrown about so freely in English, has a special meaning in Hebrew.

Love in Hebrew is "Ahava" , which is made up of three basic Hebrew letters, . These three letters actually are broken down into two parts: a two letter base or root, , and the first letter, , which is a modifier. The meaning of the two letter base, , is "to give". The letter "aleph" , which precedes these two letters comes to modify the meaning of the base word, "give". The meaning of , is "I give" and also "love".

We now see the connection between the two words, "I give" and "love". Love is giving. Now only is love giving, but the actual process of giving develops the very connection between the giver and the receiver.

There is no greater giving than that of a husband and wife. Each one gives to the other. The more giving that one does, the greater is the connection.

Why? The process of giving is a vehicle through which the giver through his act of giving is able to, through a physical gift (or even a verbal comment), give of himself to another. This act of giving something is not merely helping another. For sure, giving is helping another, but it is much more than that.

Giving is a method that enables us to make a connection to another. When we give to another, that which we give to him/her, could have been utilize to further our own self. In stead, we choose to take this object, which could have been utilized for our own needs and instead, use it for someone else.

Giving is a condition that creates and sustains love. With out giving, there is no connection that is sustaining.

The true relationships that our meaningful in our lives are those in which mutual giving takes place. The giving may be physical, emotional, intellectual or a combination. But with out giving from ourselves, no relationship can be enduring.

That is the secret of love that is revealed to us by the Hebrew language. This is the secret that is invested in the language by the Creator.

Ahava Love Letter - "Connections" (#57)

Connections”

”The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks,

and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a

friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’ But wisdom

is shown to be right by its results.” (Matthew 11:19 (NLT)

Dear family of friends,

The life trying to happen at the recent office birthday party surely wasn’t happening. In fact, standing around, trying to make small talk, while holding a half-filled glass of liquid, wasn’t much fun at all. What many may consider the “scene” really isn’t. Lost in the crowd, trying to be someone, is a very lonely place to be. But for some, that is all they have. It need not be that way, if we are there to tell them.

I am truly thankful that my life isn’t one of striving while in a pressurized mode, to make it to the top, have the great image, or be “all you can be.” That can even happen in a church or congregation setting, with that “just below the surface” uneasiness, or feeling out of place, that I know many experience. I have often.

But as my good friend Morris Ruddick would say, “There is something more.”

That something more begins with knowing the Lord Jesus, Yeshua HaMashiach, and having His intended connection with Himself. Once we have gotten to that starting line, His heart is to then connect us with others in His Body, and His nations - to receive ongoing life in a very meaningful way.

Real friendships can be bonded together as we share His purposes on this planet, as we come together in unity to seek His face, know His will, and walk in the understanding that you and I need each other. We are not meant to be an island in the ocean, or the single sheep in the pack of wolves.

So what about those who surround us, that have not had any experience yet with Him, that we know of? There are times when I will need to be with my fellow office staff, so as not to be isolated from them, or make them feel as if I am the “unsociable one”. But in my pursuit to actually befriend them, right where they are, as Jesus taught us in His examples, I will always be mindful of the real purpose. That is to get them connected too, to the Father and their Creator, so they also can begin to experience real life in Jesus (Yeshua).

We are called to go out into the world, aren’t we? Does that mean going on a mission trip to Kenya (in Africa), or the inner parts of the city where you live? Yes it does.

It also means to go where the people around you go, in that business setting, or the local bar (oops, I said it) or recreational event - again as Jesus Himself did. I guess we may even be accused of associating with sinners. I guess they did that to Jesus too.

All of us have been in the place where we needed a connection, another former sinner like us, to reach out to us, right where we were at. Many of us can remember exactly where that happened, and how. The seeds others had shown in our lives up to that time, those other connections, were set up by the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh) Himself, to get us in His Body. And then that rebirth happened.

As I seek to befriend my co-workers in the office setting, even if at times I feel most uncomfortable, I know that if I don’t reach out to them, and they don’t come to my church setting or anyone else’s, which is most likely even more now a days, how will they hear? How will they know? How will they get connected?

I urge you to be bold in your actions. We need to stop being the “weak Christians awaiting the rapture” (that rapture lie won’t happen anyway, in my opinion) and reach out to those around us who need to get connected. You are probably the one the Lord has been wanting to send to them.

Keep getting life through your fellowship connections. Then give it out to those who also need you, as Yeshua works through you.

If not now, when? Connections are needed now more than ever.

Ahava Love Letter (#56) - "Your Name"

                           “Your Name”

“Therefore Adonai Himself will give you people a sign: the young

woman will become pregnant, bear a son and name Him

‘Immanu El [God is with us].”
(Isa 7:14 Complete Jewish Bible)

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Yeshua,

[which means ‘Adonai saves,’] because He will save His people

from their sins.”
(Matt 1:21 Complete Jewish Bible.)

Dear family of friends,

The visit to the maternity ward last night caught me by surprise. The young couple, family friends of ours for over 24 years, hadn’t named their one day old son yet! I couldn’t believe it. (But, I found out this morning that his name is...ABRAHAM! I got to hold Abraham!)

As I held “To Be Named Later” in my arms, I was asking the Lord to myself, “Is this “Isaac”? Could he be “Joel” (after his uncle), “Barney” (not the TV character); Jimmie #48…? Maybe "Little Eddie” or "Joe"?"

Hey, maybe another Steven! (OK, so there are only 70 other Steve Martins in NC alone. Probably just in the greater Charlotte area itself.)

"Whom is this baby boy you have blessed us with, Adonai? What is his given name?" I pondered later.

Do you know your name is probably your most precious possession that you have been given?

Think about it. You can have a special hairdo, and change it every week. You can put all kinds of ink on your body to make you stand out, but will be gone when your grave is all we see. You can even put on the latest fad, to “keep up with the Jones’, or Robertsons’ now a days, to have that edge I guess, and make your name popular. If that is what you consider important.

But your name. That is special, and I believe the Lord Himself gave it to you.

When our four kids (now full grown adults with kids of their own) were about to be birthed, both Laurie and I were involved in choosing their special names. In our attempt to get it right, we used the “Name Your Baby” book, checked relatives names, and even noted what was “popular” at the time. But in the end, I believe we were led by the Lord in naming each of them, for He already knew them.

Josh would be a leader. Firstborn. To be like Joshua, helping Moses (Moshe).

Ben would be the “Son - of the right hand”, as it means in Hebrew, “Ben-jamin”. I know he is.

Hannah would be one who loved children. Both Hannahs in the Old and New Testaments. And she surely does!

Christen almost was named “Kristen”, but the Lord told us her name was to be spelled “Christen” – even as “Christ”, our Messiah and Lord.

If you think you were named by accident, or maybe don’t even like your name, trust that something as important as who you are, especially in the Lord’s eyes and heart, was not a mistake.

The Lord knows you by name. When all is said and done, He calls you by your name, for He was certainly involved when you were in His heart, from the beginning of eternity.

Just let Him know, even now, how grateful you are that He knows you. That He knows your name. You are special to Him. He loves you so much.

P.S. Our Lord has many names, as written in our Bible, the Scriptures, both in the Old Testament (Tanakh in Hebrew) and in the New Testament (B’rit Hadashah).

The one I like most is “Yeshua – “Adonai saves”. At the end of this letter I have included a few pieces of artwork, for you to print out along with this letter.
