History[edit source | editbeta]

Andy Chrisman, Mark Harris, Marty Magehee, and Kirk Sullivan originally met when they sang together in Truth, a Contemporary Christian vocal group founded in the late 1960s and directed by Roger Breland. Truth had a rotating roster of four male and four female vocalists. After three representatives from Benson Records attended several Truth concerts in the late 1980s during which Andy, Mark, Marty, and Kirk performed, Benson approached the quartet saying that they wanted to use the guys to create a new male four-member vocal group under the Benson label. "Where There Is Faith", their first single, stayed at No. 1 on the charts for eight weeks, two months before 4Him left Truth. Releasing their self-titled debut in 1990, they blended the traditions of Christian music's past, with modern pop production and practical lyrics. In 1995, they were featured in the Warren Chaney docudrama,America: A Call to Greatness.[1]

In 1996, with the release of The Message, 4Him changed their overall sound in an effort to keep pushing the creative limits of the group. The guys replaced the over-the-top orchestrations and choral vocal arrangements with a stripped down, acoustic band approach where one of the guys would sing lead and the other three would sing backing vocals. On 1998’s Obvious, each member took more ownership of their music – becoming more involved in the production and songwriting aspects.

By 2004, all four of the guys reevaluated the future of the ministry. After close to seventeen years together, the members of 4Him decided to embark on solo careers.[2] On September 23, 2006, they performed their final concert at Cottage Hill Baptist Church in Mobile, AL, the city where 4Him’s 17-year journey first started. At that concert, various individuals (including family members, record producers, management, and Truth founder Roger Breland) were recognized for their contributions to 4Him’s ministry.

The Jewish Calendar - Holidays

The Jewish Calendar

BY STEPHEN J. EINSTEIN AND LYDIA KUKOFF

Jews often say: "The holidays are late this year" or "The holidays are early this year." In fact, the holidays never are early or late; they are always on time, according to the Jewish calendar.

Unlike the Gregorian (civil) calendar, which is based on the sun (solar), the Jewish calendar is based primarily on the moon (lunar), with periodic adjustments made to account for the differences between the solar and lunar cycles.

Therefore, the Jewish calendar might be described as both solar and lunar. The moon takes an average of twenty-nine and one-half days to complete its cycle; twelve lunar months equal 354 days. A solar year is 365 1/4 days.

There is a difference of eleven days per year. To ensure that the Jewish holidays always fall in the proper season, an extra month is added to the Hebrew calendar seven times out of every nineteen years.

If this were not done, the fall harvest festival of Sukkot, for instance, would sometimes be celebrated in the summer, or the spring holiday of Passover would sometimes occur in the winter.

Jewish days are reckoned from sunset to sunset rather than from dawn or midnight. The basis for this is biblical. In the story of Creation (Genesis 1), each day concludes with the phrase: "And there was evening and there was morning. . ."

Since evening is mentioned first, the ancient rabbis concluded that in a day evening precedes morning.

The list of the Hebrew months (below) and the holidays that occur during these months also indicates the corresponding secular months.

For the counting of months, Nisan--the month that begins spring--is considered the first. However, the Jewishyear is reckoned from the month of Tishri--the month that begins autumn. This would seem to be the superimposition of one calendar system upon another, which took place during the Babylonian Exile (sixth pre-Christian century).

According to Jewish tradition, history is reckoned from the time of Creation; Jewish years, therefore, are numbered from then. For instance, Israel declared its independence on 5 Iyar 5708 (corresponding to May 14, 1948). The year 5708 (and every Jewish year) was figured by commencing the count from the beginning of Genesis.

Christian custom has been to divide history into two periods: before the time of Jesus (called B.C. = before Christ) and after Jesus' birth (called A.D. = anno Domini = in the year of the Lord). Jewish books generally refer to these periods as B.C.E. (before the common era) and C.E. (of the common era).

The subject of the calendar is rather complex. We have, therefore, touched only its broadest outlines.

Zola Levitt TV - "Righteous Gentiles" Ride Again

Reconstruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem

This seven minute video is a great overview of the planning going on today for the reconstruction of the Holy Temple (HaBay'eet or The House in Hebrew) in Jerusalem.  As you can see, most of the furniture and accouterments of the Temple (the golden menorrah; the table of showbread, the arc of the covenant, the priestly garments, etc.) have already been completed.

What I find particularly fascinating is that both Jews and Christians have an increased sense that the coming of Mashiach (Messiah) is near.  I don't think this is a random coincidence.  The Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit) is speaking to His people, Jew and Gentile alike) that His appearing will be soon; or as the Jewish people say, "speedily, and in our day".

Shalom,
~Bill Duerfeldt

Ahava Love Letter - "The Cities"

                    “The Cities”

“When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,
saying, "If you had known in this day, even you, the things which
make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.”
Luke 19:41-42 NASU

Dear family of friends,

Mondays are a normal day of prayer and fasting for me. I am grateful Bible teacher Derek Prince taught that in the 1970's. I have tried to adhere to it these many decades, though sometimes I didn’t succeed.

Derek Prince -
"Shaping History Through Prayer and Fasting"

As I recently walked that normal prayer lunch time, the uptown city sidewalks became my partnering moments with the Lord, interceding in tongues through His Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh in Hebrew.)

Many were going to their mid-day appointments, concentrating on conversations with co-workers. Others sat on benches, only caring about where their next meal was coming from.

Charlotte, NC - Tryon Street. On my way...

I just kept praying, knowing Jesus' (Yeshua’s) love was for all of them. The sense of knowing He was grieving along with many, whose real hurt was maybe hidden behind the smiles, touched my heart.

Some I hoped were rejoicing and giving thanks for this day, believing that their Savior had good plans for them each day. But I think those numbers were few among the crowd. And so I walked on. Praying on.

Inhabitants of cities around the world need the Lord. They need to know of His salvation, mercy and love. The vast majority of cities know nothing of His real nature. They only see and believe the lies having been passed down through the centuries. The lies telling them that “The Man upstairs”, as some call Him, has little to do with their life.

Or that if God is so loving, why are all the wars, hatred, and evil going on daily in the cities world-wide? “Can’t He do something about it?” they might even ask.

The clear message of the Gospel is that God is a loving Father, who sent His only Son Jesus to live among us, die in order for us to live, and rose from the grave, to alone be the only Savior of the world.

Isaiah 53:5

“There is salvation in no one else! For there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by whom we must be saved!” (Acts 4:12 Complete Jewish Bible)

The truth shared, to each as he or she will listen, can break the bonds that entangle so many, and give freedom to the spirit, soul and body. As we pray daily for our families, our cities, our nation, and those in Israel, we will see His Kingdom established.

I believe my regular fasting and prayers are having an effect, and so I will continue to do so. Maybe you will join me? See some results for yourself.

Poll: Israelis oppose surrender of land

Poll: Israelis oppose surrender of land

Tuesday, August 06, 2013 |  Ryan Jones
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to hold a national referendum on any proposed surrender of land to the Palestinian Authority as part of a new peace deal before signing on the dotted line. But Israelis have already answered him: Don't bargain with our birthright!
In a survey conducted last week by the Israel Democracy Institute, a full 62.5 percent of respondents said they were against surrendering Judea, Samaria and the eastern half of Jerusalem for the creation of a Palestinian state.
Previous polls have shown that a majority of Israelis do support a two-state solution to the current conflict, but they clearly do not agree to meet Arab land demands in full.
Various strategic and historically important areas, in particular the city of Jerusalem, are red lines for most Israelis.
Unfortunately, the results of such surveys are likely to be ignored by the Israeli delegation now negotiating with the Palestinian Authority under the auspices of the Obama Administration in Washington.
Those talks are taking place under a shroud of secrecy, so whatever concessions Israel might be preparing to make (whether willingly or under duress) will not be known until the last minute.Share on facebook
