How the American Colony Adopted Yemenite Jews in 1882

Israel's History - a Picture a Day (Beta)

How the American Colony Adopted Yemenite Jews in 1882 -- As Told by Bertha Spafford Vester, a Leader of the Colony

Why so many pictures of Yemenite Jews? (American
Colony Collection, circa 1910)

In previous features we discussed why the American Colony photographers dedicated so much film to the Yemenite Jews of Jerusalem.

Today we present the words of one of the key figures of the American Colony, Bertha Spafford Vester, daughter of the founders of the Colony, Anne and Horatio Spafford. Bertha took over the management of the American Colony enterprises after her parents' death. She described her life in her fascinating book,An American Family in the Holy City, 1881-1949.

She provided one chapter to the Colony's special relationship with a group of "Gadites" who arrived in 1882. It was believed they were descendants of the tribe of Gad.

CHAPTER TWELVE

The Gadites entered our lives a few months after our arrival in Jerusalem, and until [the 1948] civil war divided Jerusalem into Arab and Jewish zones, with no intercourse between except bullets and bombs, they continued to get help from the American Colony.

One afternoon in May 1882 several of the Group, including my parents, went for a walk, and were attracted by a strange-looking company of people camping in the fields. The weather was hot, and they had made shelters from the sun out of odds and ends of cloth, sacking, and bits of matting. Father made inquiries through the help of an interpreter and found that they were Yemenite Jews recently arrived from Arabia.

They told Father about their immigration from Yemen and their arrival in Palestine. Suddenly, they said, without warning, a spirit seemed to fall on them and they began to speak about returning to the land of Israel. They were so convinced that this was the right and appointed time to return to Palestine that they sold their property and turned other convertible belongings into cash and started for the Promised Land.

They said about five hundred had left Yena in Yemen. Most of them were uneducated in any way except the knowledge of their ancient Hebrew writings, and those, very likely, they recited by rote. As appears, they were simple folk, with little knowledge of the ways of the world outside of Yemen, and that is the same as saying "the days of Abraham."

When they landed in Hedida on the coast of the Red Sea, they were cautioned by Jews not to continue their trip to Jerusalem and that if they did so it would be at peril of their lives. Some of the party were discouraged and returned to Yena. Others were misdirected and were taken to India, The rest went to Aden, where they embarked on a steamer for Jaffa, and came to Jerusalem before the Feast of Passover.

They told about the opposition and unfriendliness they had encountered from the Jerusalem Jews, who, they said, accused them of not being Jews but Arabs. One reason, they said, for their rejection by the Jerusalem Jews was because they feared that these poor immigrants would swell the number of recipients ofhalukkah, or prayer money.

Early in the seventeenth century, as a result of earthquakes, famine, and persecution, the economic position of the Jews in Palestine became critical, and the Jews of Venice came to their aid. They established a fund "to support the inhabitants of the Holy Land." Later on the Jews of Poland, Bohemia, and Germany offered similar aid. This was the origin of the halukkah.

The money was sent not so much for the purpose of charity as to enable Jewish scholars and students to study and interpret the Scriptures and Jewish holy books and to pray for the Jews in the Diaspora (Dispersion), at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, and in other holy cities of Palestine.

Thehalukkah, as one could imagine, was soon abused. It only stopped, however, when World War I began in 1914 and no more money came to Palestine for that purpose.

In 1882, when the Yemenites arrived, those who had benefited from the generosity of others were unwilling to pass it on.

Father was interested in the Gadites at once. Their story about their unprovoked conviction that this was the time to return to Palestine coincided with what he felt sure was coming to pass the fulfillment of the prophecy of the return of the Jews to Palestine.

Also, Father was attracted by the classical purity of Semitic features of these Yemenite immigrants, so unlike the Jews he was accustomed to see in Jerusalem or in the United States. These people were distinctive: they had dark skin with dark hair and dark eyes. They wore side curls, according to the

Yemenite Jewish family circa 1900

Mosaic law: "Ye shalt not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard." Otherwise their dress was Arabic. They had poise, and their movements were graceful, like those of the Bedouins. They were slender and somewhat undersized.

Many of the women were beautiful, and the men, even the young men, looked venerable with their long beards. They regarded as true the tradition that they belonged to the tribe of Gad. They believed that they had not gone into captivity in Babylon, and that they had not returned at the time of Ezra and Nehemiah to rebuild the temple. For thousands of years they had remained in Yemen, hence their purity of race and feature.

The thirty-second chapter of Numbers tells how the children of Gad and the children of Reuben asked Moses to allow them to remain on the east side of Jordan, which country had "found favor in their sight." It goes on to tell how Moses rebuked them, saying, "Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?" Then Moses promised them that if they would go armed and help subdue the country, then "this land shall be your possession before the Lord."

In the thirteenth chapter of Joshua, "when Joshua was stricken in years," he gives instructions that the Gadites and the Reubenites and half the tribe of Menasseh should receive their inheritance "beyond the Jordan eastward even as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them."

In the Apology of al Kindy, written at the court of al Mamun, A.D. 830, the author speaks of Medina as being a poor town, mostly inhabitated by Jews. He also speaks of other tribes of Jews, one of which was deported to Syria.

Would it be too remote to conjecture that the remnants of these tribes should have wandered to and remained in Yemen? I know there are other theories about how Jews got there, and about their origin, but Father believed that "Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad," and the Group did everything in their power to help these immigrants. We called them Gadites from that time.

They were in dreadful need when we found them.

Some of them had died of exposure and starvation during their long and uncomfortable trip; now malaria, typhoid, and dysentery were doing their work. They had to be helped, and quickly. No time
was lost in getting relief started.

The Group rented rooms, and the Gadites were installed in cooler and more sanitary quarters. Medical help was immediately brought. Mr. Steinharf's sister, an Orthodox Jewish woman, was engaged to purchase kosher meat, which, with vegetables and rice or cracked burghal (wheat) she made into a nutritious soup.

Bread and soup were distributed once a day to all, with the addition of milk for the children and invalids. One of the American Colony members was always present at distribution time, to see that it was done equitably and well.

Translation of the Gadite prayer kept in the Spafford Bible:
Prayer of Jewish Rabbi offered every Sabbath in Gadite synagogue,
June 27?: He who blessed our fathers Abraham, Isaac & Jacob,
bless & guard & keep Horatio Spafford & his household & all that
are joined with him, because he has shown us mercy to us & our
children & little ones. Therefore may the Lord make his days long...(?)
and may the Lord's mercy shelter them. In his and in our days may
Judah be helped (?) and Israel rest peacefully and may the
Redeemer come to Zion, Amen.

The Gadites had a scribe among them who was a cripple. He could not use his arms and wrote the most beautiful Hebrew, holding a reed pen between his toes. He wrote a prayer for Father and his associates, which was brought one day and presented to Father as a thanksgiving offering.

They said that they repeated the prayer daily. I have it in my possession; it is written on a piece of parchment. The translation was made by Mr. Steinhart.

This amicable state of affairs continued for some time. Then the elders, who were the heads of the families, came as a delegation to Father. They filed upstairs to the large upper living room, looking solemn and sad, and smelling strongly of garlic.

They told Father that certain Orthodox Jews, the very ones who had turned blind eyes and deaf ears to their entreaties for help when they arrived in such a pitiable state, were now persecuting them under the claim that they were violating the law by eating Christian food. Some of the older men and women had stopped eating, and in consequence were weak and ill. They made Father understand how vital this accusation, even if false, was to them, and they begged him to divide the money spent among them, instead of giving them the food.

Yemenite Rabbi Shlomo (1935)

Everyone knows how much more economical it is to make a large quantity of soup in one cauldron than in many individual pots; how ever, their request was granted. A bit more money was added to the original sum, and every Friday morning the heads of the Gadite families would appear at the American Colony and be given coins in proportion to the number of individuals to be fed.

They explained to Father that they were trying to learn the trades of the new country and hoped very soon not to need assistance. They had been goldsmiths and silversmiths of a crude sort in Yemen, but Jerusalem at that time had no appreciation or demand for that sort of handicraft. One by one the elders came to tell us they had found work, to thank, us for what we had done, and to say they needed no further help. Father was impressed with the unspoiled integrity of these people.

The Colony continued giving help to the original group of Gadites in decreasing amounts until only a few old people and

Yemenite Rabbi Avram (circa 1935)

widows remained. But these came regularly once a week. Their number was swelled by newcomers and we still shared what we could with them: portions of dry rice, lentils, tea, coffee, and sugar, or other dry articles.

After the British occupation of Palestine and the advent of the Zionist organization, with its resources and vast machinery to meet pressing necessities, after forty years our list of dependent Gadites was taken over by them. Even then, individuals continued to come to the doors of the American Colony to ask our help.

One night in June 1948 the American Colony had been under fire all night between the Jews west of us and the Arab legionaries east of us. In the morning a Yemenite Jew lay dead in the road be fore our gates. I recognized Hyam, a Yemenite from the "box colony" near the American Colony. He was one of those who had been receiving help from us for years.

For all this relief work the American Colony was using the money of its members.

The chapter continues with the story of a con-man, Mr. Moses, who stole an ancient scroll from the Yemenites while they were still in Yemen. The Yemenite community in Jerusalem discovered him in Jerusalem and requested that the American Colony help secure the scroll for them.

Leadership Through Love (Chapter 11) - "Acknowledge Him in All Your Ways" - Steve Martin

Chapter 11

Acknowledge Him in All Your Ways

   - Heart of Thankfulness
   - Heart of Worship
   - Heart of Service

The very first verse I ever memorized that I can remember was Psalm 37:4,5 “Have your delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desire of your heart. Trust also in Him, and He will do it.” (NAS) That was in my teen years, before the “work” years began.

After 27 years of administration work, I can truthfully and gratefully acknowledge that if it hadn’t been for the Lord’s encouragement, guidance, provision, patience and persistence working in my life through His grace, I would have quit ministry service a long time ago. Administrators and staff serving in key roles need to depend on Him in all that they set out to do. The road is not easy, and our spirits, souls and bodies need His constant input to refresh, revitalize, and direct our daily steps.

Ministry and church administration, though it has the eternal rewards promised to all faithful servants, is certainly not the “field of green” that many expect it is. As in any work of the Lord, there are additional pressures that one confronts knowingly and unknowingly throughout the week. The enemy of the soul seems to work overtime to discourage, steal and destroy the families and staff of committed laborers. Those at the “top of the staff rosters” are generally the first target.

Having raised a family of four with my wife Laurie, we have experienced the results of the enemy’s efforts to get us off course. Often he will work through our children, to try and have us question the protection and watch care the Lord promises.

Over those growing decades, four cars were totaled in the early driving years of our three oldest kids. That certainly tested our faith. The three trips to bail two out of jail, on separate other occasions, even more so caused us to seek the Lord for His wisdom and counsel. Our home lives do have the spiritual pressure bearing down on us, as we attempt to be the “examples” of leadership in the church and ministry settings.

To acknowledge the ongoing reliance on the Lord’s protection and provision are continually needed to press forward, to see His kingdom come and His will done. One prophetic word spoken over me, that I didn’t realize until I heard it only recently, was that the Lord has His protection over and around me. One may take that for granted, which I did, but when it came through my ears and settled into my heart, my gratitude for the Lord increased. That spoken word continues to give me the faith to push forward in those areas of building and growth that I have been called to do. Knowing my “back” and forward progress is protected gives me the courage to press on, which also includes my family.

To help sustain this awareness of the Lord’s presence, it has become my habit to spend a quiet time each day with the Lord, as I wrote in an earlier chapter. I need to thank my mother, Lila Martin Parker, for her excellent example set early in my childhood. As a kid growing up in Cedar falls, Iowa, I noticed her take time out at the beginning of the day to read the Word, listen to her praise albums on the stereo phonograph player, and pray. To this day, this practice in my life has been ongoing (except maybe not on Saturdays and Sundays, when I commit my day to the Lord in others ways.)

Prayer chair

Developing a thankful heart as a leader, by thanking the Lord for the opportunities He gives in service as a leader, allows me to realize just what all He does. When a situation arises that could cause grave concern or another headache, my first reaction has often been to say quietly to the Lord, “Thank you Lord.” To speak blessing instead of cursing, when the temptation is great to do otherwise in any situation, causes the matter to be handled with a more godly response.

When I lay my head down to sleep, as it hits the pillow, I have made it a habit to say “Thank you Lord.”

Leading worship in gatherings has been one of my greatest joys. One of my favorite songs is one sung by Don Moen (Integrity Music) entitled “Thank You Lord”. When I would lead that song at the beginning of a praise and worship service, the atmosphere is charged with people’s hearts giving thanks to the Lord right from the start. Cares and concerns seem to diminish as each acknowledges his dependence on the goodness of the Lord, and thanking Him for his blessings.

Being an avid reader, I have found time spent reading books on the faith of saints who have preceded us builds a thankful heart in me. That in turn assists me in encouraging others on staff in their faith, by them seeing and hearing of my thankful heart.

I remember one situation in the ministry office that certainly needed a spoken word of thanks, so that something else would not have come forth. It seems that in the building we had purchased a few years early, that when the back parking lot was laid, the sewer line was not given the proper degree of angle needed for outward flow. Over the years, as the weight of the earth above it sifted and sunk, it put pressure on the line at one end, causing the line to push up at the wrong end. Thus the water flow ceased flowing. At least in the right direction!

When the backed up mess ended up in two lower level offices, you can imagine the consternation that ensued. If the Lord hadn’t developed a thankful heart in me, I would have reacted as one would have expected, along with the occupants of those rooms. But instead, I was able to track down a plumber to start the proper course of action, and in the meantime, got out the wet vac and started doing the necessity work. No fun for sure, but at least I wasn’t grumbling to high heaven.

Another time, at a previous administrator position, a swimming pool that came with the leased property had to have the annual cleaning after winter was over. Having grown up going to the pool three times a day in my young grade school years, I had grown basically tired of swimming and water, and anything related to it. This brought me no joy. And then especially when the pool covering had fallen half in, during the eight months of not doing its job. Of course, every tree leaf, twig, dead mice and other creatures who couldn’t swim found their way to this part of the property.

After sucking out the totally polluted water, and shoveling out the extra terrestrial creatures and creation as listed above, hours later I was able to give some thanks –that the job was over! Through tasks like this, by doing things we normally detest, our hearts are given the opportunity to serve others, and develop thankfulness. It also helps us to grown in further appreciation for those who the Lord surrounds us with who help us in times a need, who do tasks and chores that aren’t at all pleasant, but need to get done.

Art Maki, a long time friend of over 26 years, has most often been that special one in our lives, and the others he blesses daily with his service. As Art will say every time one is with him, “Jesus loves you, and so do the Makis”, to remind each of the Lord’s love and care, for which we owe much thanks. Thank you Art!

Today's Daily Inspiration

Rabbi Zelig Pliskin offers these beautiful words
about our timeless connection to Psalms: "There
are times in life when a person feels that 'nothing
can be done' to change a dire situation. But there
is always something that we can do: we can
connect with our Father and King in heartfelt prayer.
We can pray in our own words after we repeat the
sublime, uplifting words that were Divinely inspired
and sanctified in Tehillim. Reciting Psalms elevates
us and opens our hearts. The personal prayers
we say afterwards follow our greater awareness
of our connection with the One Who can answer
our prayers."

"THE LEADERSHIP MATURITY KEY" - Morris E. Ruddick

SIGN

THE LEADERSHIP MATURITY KEY

(c) Morris E. Ruddick

"He who rules his own spirit is mightier than he who takes a city."

Prov 16:32

We have entered times described by the Bible as when the

"nations rage." In the midst of the mounting turmoil those

known by His Name must adhere to a higher standard. Likewise,

when paving new ground in this setting, much more by way of

discernment and wisdom is required. The task of one of employing

righteous power in corrupt settings. The issue is one of leadership,

mature leadership. The bar has been raised.

Biblical leadership requires a high-level of self-discipline. With it is

the ability to grasp and perform well two primary tenets: 1) the

accomplishment of the mission and 2) the welfare of those being led.

In keeping with the military standard used in the opening scripture,

a non-Marine combat reporter (Thomas Ricks, Making the Corps,

Simon & Schuster, New York, 2007) made an unusual observation

after an extended first-hand study of Marines operating in combat.

Trained in the teamwork and discipline needed to achieve often

impossible tasks, Ricks described those in the junior enlisted ranks

as men who in the world would not have been given the responsibility

to run a copier. Yet, in instance after instance in life and death

situations, they demonstrated the maturity and presence of mind to

know what to do in leading others.

"Greater love has no one than this, than a man give up his life for

his friend." John 15:13

This standard reflects a culture of discipline that engenders a society

of trust. Yet, at a point when the Body should be operating as a society

of leaders, it falls short of this standard and too often is embroiled in

disorder, discord and diversions.

Some Kingdom leadership issues involve maturity. Some are matters of

experience. The bottom line for each is the norm of ruling your own spirit.

Two friends I admire are each Kingdom leaders. One has the unique ability

to see God's blueprint in a person and draw it forth. The other equally

proficient as a leader has a tendency, when things don't seem to measure

up, to see the devil's blueprint and then works to stamp it out. The way of

the world is the survival of the fittest. However, Kingdom leadership bears

a greater responsibility.

Within the parameters of Truth and good stewardship is the wisdom and

balance of a leadership to nurture. It is a key part of what distinguishes us

from the world. The way of the Kingdom always offers Life for both the

mission and the people involved.

The friend whose mode is to discern God's blueprint is fearless in terms

of penetrating enemy territory and of taking risks when convinced God

is involved. It is the approach evidenced by Jesus during His earthly ministry.

"The Son can do nothing of Himself, but only what He sees the Father

doing. For whatever the Father does, the Son does also." John 5:19

In contrast, Jesus' scrutiny of the Pharisee's nit-picking approach to

leadership indicated that their blindness was impeding the way for others.

"Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you shut off the

Kingdom of God from men. You neither go in yourselves nor do you

allow those entering to go in." Matt 23:13

Beyond the Natural

Jesus' response to the Pharisees punctuates the truth that leadership is

not about getting people to conform. Nor is it about judgment. As soon as

the judgment factor arises, Jesus urged caution and warned that we would

find ourselves in danger of being judged.

"Judge not, that you not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be

judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured back to you."

Matt 7:1-2

Kingdom leadership contains responsibilities and requirements beyond the

best our natural capabilities offer. It takes discipline and the maturity of

ruling ones own spirit to wield.

Kingdom leadership incorporates stewardship. It's about wisely managing risk

in order to leverage opportunity and increase. It's about nurturing and enabling

the gifts operating within one's community. Leadership requires a responsible trustworthiness that simultaneously inspires and guides for the common good.

It sets things in order, God's order.

Stewardship. Jesus' parable of the talents depicts leadership as emerging

from the application of wise stewardship. Good stewardship embraces

responsibility and builds from it. In this parable, the one who minimized their

risks and didn't make ANY mistakes, but in so doing also minimized their increase,

was deemed a "wicked servant" On the other hand, the one who brought increase

was given promotion and more responsibility (Matt 25:26). So it is that the

principles of stewardship are central to Kingdom leadership.

Leveraging Increase. Leadership maps out, builds up and brings increase.

In another instance, Jesus told the story about the merchant who discovered

a pearl of great value. He risked all that he had in order to leverage opportunity

to acquire the pearl of great value (Matt 13:46). Kingdom leadership adapts and manages the change needed to take and navigate the pathway into significant opportunity.

Enabling Gifts. Paul wrote the Romans of his deep desire to play a role in

advancing the will of God in their lives by imparting a spiritual gift to them.

Paul understood biblical community with a depth that came from His Jewish

heritage. Understanding ones gifts and how that fits into their role in the

community is very central to being "the light on a hill" that Jesus indicated

we would be to the world around us.

"For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so

that you may be established." Rom 1:11

Trustworthiness. Understanding the difference between giving people what

they "want" versus nurturing their roles, while raising the bar to serve the

common good is pivotal to sound leadership. When done consistently,

trustworthiness will result. Trustworthy leaders are foundational to the

operation of biblical community.

God's Order. Jesus said that you would know them by their fruit. When

God's order is operating it bears good fruit. It brings increase. It nurtures

the gifts. It draws others because the fruit is evident to all. Isaac sowed

in famine and yielded a harvest because God told him to do so. Everyone

witnessed God's hand being on Isaac.

Reckless Disregard

However, there is a reckless disregard operating within leadership
circles that short-circuits the standard needed for the Body to be
properly navigating the snares and hurdles in today's world. It is a
myopia that fails to see either the process or the progress.

The story of the young prophet from Judah (1 Kings 13) sent to the
King of Israel illustrates a short-sightedness, that misses the forest
for the trees, which has become almost as a plague today. In this
story the young prophet clearly wielded a prophetic gift and the
power of God, but was so blinded by his focus on his own return t
hat he missed the real opportunity with the King of Israel, and due
to his personal concerns was entrapped by the very warning the
Lord had made so clear to him.

This sad story illustrates the myopic blinding that needs to be guarded
against among those deemed most gifted. It represents an
irresponsible, reckless disregard for God's priorities due to
overriding soulish obsessions. James admonishes the
double-minded to purify their hearts.

God's standard for leadership carries an awe necessitating
an ongoing poise of the spirit before Him. It cannot emulate the
world nor reflect a blended approach. It is a standard that roots
out the precepts of men and the cleverness of the clever. It gives
no place to deceit or the lust for power. It is the standard that
eliminates the need for striving and ambition, because of being
immersed in the flow of the Spirit.

This standard applied opens the gates for a safe place where the
gifts flow naturally, in unison and harmony to the benefit of all. When
this norm is met, it offers the potential described by the Church at
Philadelphia in Revelations: keys to open doors that no one can
shut and shuts doors that no one can open.

Operating with this standard requires an understanding of what
distinguishes the function of leading from the gift of leadership.
A lack of understanding and misapplication of the gifts creates
confusion and dissatisfaction; with disorder and discord following.
The requirements of leadership vary according to the uniqueness
of the gifts of its leaders.

Similarly, managing resources and projects is very different from
leading people. The Romans 12 leadership gift flows with both
influence and authority, without the need of position. On the other
hand, the gift of administration in 1 Cor 12:28 specializes in the
management of resources. Joseph the Patriarch operated in both.
Within the function of leading are diversities of applications, again
based on the gifts of those serving as the leaders.

The bottom line is the issue between soul and spirit. This is the
cause of much confusion within the ranks of believers. Those
who try to employ the spirit to nurture their soul-longings are out
of God's order. The priorities are upside down. The standard for
leadership requires raising the bar.

"The Son of man came not to be ministered to, but to minister,
and to give his life as a ransom for many." Matt 20:28

A Culture of Discipline and Trust

In his riveting "Trust: Social Virtues and Creation of Prosperity,"
an analysis of social economics, Francis Fukuyama notes that
economic life cannot be divorced from cultural life. He contends
that in an era when social capital may be as important as physical
capital, only those societies with a high degree of social trust will
have what is needed to compete in the new global economy.
High levels of trust based on cooperative behavior and shared
norms are foundational to maximizing the economic potential of a society.

Fukuyama's views make a case for the reason the Jewish people have
survived the civilizations that have come and gone over the millennia.
As a culture within a culture, their foundation is a model of biblical
community and a culture of discipline that engenders a society of trust.

Spiritual Maintenance

Jesus cautioned of days in which the very elect would be subject to
being deceived. Peter warned those who indulge in corrupt desires
and despise the authority over them. The gravity of the times calls
deep to deep and shouts for the need to spiritually overcompensate.

Spiritual maintenance for leaders cannot be confined to devotional
readings or corporate devotions. The defilements of the day must
be compensated for and refreshed by a regular washing in the
Word of Truth and interactive prayer vigils. Proactive personal time
with the Lord must be carved out of the busiest schedules.
David Wilkerson had a mature local ministry that went viral,
when he obeyed the promptings of the Spirit and began spending
an extra hour in prayer each night at midnight.

The Apostle Paul frequently in his letters makes a case for the
importance of discipline needed as believers. Again and again
he uses the analogy of running a race. There's no coasting for
those at the forefront of the spiritual drama unfolding in this day.
Peter admonishes leaders to clothe themselves with humility.
The calling of leadership demands vigilance and diligence.
Likewise, the book of Hebrews indicates the need to check
our priorities and maintain the attentiveness needed to rule your
own spirit in maturity.

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of
witnesses, let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance
(unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily
(deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us run
with patient endurance and steady and active persistence
the appointed course of the race that is set before us." Heb 12:1 Amp

It is a time for true leaders to redirect their attention from issues
of soul and position and into the realm of service. It is a time
when ruling ones own spirit will yield not only the power to serve
as Jesus admonished in Matt 20:28, with the valor and capacity
of those willing to give up their lives as a ransom for many;
but with it, embracing the joy and contentment of truly being in
the flow of His business.

"Then the fool will no longer be called generous, nor the miser
said to be bountiful. The schemes of the schemer are evil; devising
wicked plans to destroy the poor with lying words, despite the needy
speaking justice. The generous man devises generous plans, and
by generosity he shall stand." Isaiah 32: 5-8
