Andrew Pessin Affair (pro-Israel professor) Exposes Connecticut College Anti-Semitism | Noah Beck ISRAEL TODAY

Pessin Affair Exposes Connecticut College Anti-Semitism

Monday, January 25, 2016 |  Noah Beck  ISRAEL TODAY
A pro-Israel professor won’t be on campus at Connecticut College when classes start Monday, missing the second straight semester since his 2014 Facebook post criticizing Hamas led to death threats and ostracism.
Andrew Pessin “requested and received a sabbatical for the Spring semester to continue his studies in Jewish philosophy and Israel studies,” Connecticut College spokeswoman Pamela Serfes said in an email last week. “He has been and continues to be a valued member of the Connecticut College faculty.”
The vague and misleading response glosses over the intensity of the campaign against Pessin – he first took a medical leave last spring as a smear campaign against him peaked. The controversy exposed an administration unwilling to enforce its own honor code to protect a professor against anti-Israel activists and a student journalist responsible for covering the very controversy she had joined.
It started with an August 2014 Facebook post written as Israel and Hamas fought their latest war, in which Pessin referred to “a rabid pit bull chained in a cage, regularly making mass efforts to escape.”
It wasn’t until March that the comment suddenly resurfaced to ignite a campus firestorm. On March 2, three editorials condemning Pessin were published in the print and online editions of Connecticut College’s student newspaper, College Voice. The op-eds, which started on the front page and covered all of page three and part of page four, accused Pessin of racism and comparing Palestinians to rabid dogs.
Not so, the professor insisted. He was talking about the Hamas terrorists who govern the territory, but the Voice reportedly didn’t bother to give him a chance to present his side.
Pessin, a heretofore popular philosophy professor, stood accused of peddling “hate speech.”
“I feel unsafe,” Lamiya Khandaker wrote, not really explaining how a Facebook post from the previous summer that hardly anyone had noticed suddenly threatened her security. She did note that she had contacted Pessin, who repeatedly tried to explain that she had misunderstood his comments.
Khandaker is an activist with Students for Justice in Palestine, an aggressively anti-Israelorganization active on campuses nationwide.
Two other students, Michael Fratt and Katilyn Garbe, co-authored an article falsely alleging that “Pessin directly condoned the extermination of a people.”
Ayla Zuraw-Friedland, the Voice’s editor-in-chief, reportedly authored an anti-Pessin petition, thereby actively participating in the very controversy covered by her newspaper.
The College Voice also posted anti-Semitic reader comments, which still can be seen. For example, one commenter wrote: “your universities and colleges are owned by Aipac..the zionists who control America and its foreign policy, apart from its banks, media and movie business.”Another wrote that “student senators have been bullied by Zionist ideologues and moneychangers” and calls Pessin “an unapologetically racist bigot who likes the perks of being buddies with Israeli colonists who torture, maim and kill unarmed Palestinianns (sic) with impunity.”
In April, George Mason University law professor David Bernstein uncovered evidence that Pessin’s Facebook post had clearly referred to Hamas all along and wrote that “the whole controversy [looked like it had been] ginned up to score anti-Israel political points.”
Pessin’s isolation and vulnerability were undoubtedly intensified by the school’s small size: only about 1,900 students attend this private, liberal arts college located in New London.
He declined to comment for this story. However, his wife, Gabriella Rothman, expressed the frustration of seeing a witch hunt waged against her husband, and the disappointment in the lack of support from colleagues and the university community.
As the controversy erupted, school officials “pressured him not to speak or tell anyone that his post was being misunderstood out of context,” she said. “I believe because it was trying to appease the students.” A bias complaint filed against him remained active, but officials wouldn’t tell Pessin what consequences he might face from it.
“He was worried his job was on the line,” she said. “So he did what they told him to do.”
The couple contacted the FBI and local law enforcement about the death threats, “and for two months we literally felt under siege,” Rothman said.
Making matters worse, some of Pessin’s “closest friends at the college joined the mob of condemnations in a heartbeat, even though they knew that the post was about Hamas. Not one of them stood up and said to the mob, wait a minute, this post is not racist or hate speech. Not one stood up and said, let’s not rush to judgment, let’s wait to hear his side of the story.”
Pessin went on medical leave before the Spring semester ended. He has not taught since.
Exacerbating the harm to Pessin, the administration chose to host statements from scores of academic departments, school officials, student associations, and other college affiliates, condemning Pessin on the official Connecticut College website. As of Wednesday, no other issue or speech in the university community is similarly scrutinized or condemned on the school’s official web site. Such selective outrage highlights the anti-Semitic climate on campus – in this case, directly enabled by the administration – and the dangers of the ironically mistitled “Office of the Dean of Institutional Equity and Inclusion,” which hosts the anti-Pessin statements.
The administration has apparently taken no disciplinary action against any of the students who, in their efforts to defame Pessin, likely violated Connecticut College’s Honor Code, which requires students to act “with integrity, civility, and the utmost respect for the dignity of all human beings.”
Instead, the administration appears to have awarded the “Scholar Activist Award” to none other than Lamiya Khandaker – the driving force behind the campaign against Pessin and one of the most vocal anti-Israel activists on campus. This fact was discovered from Lamiya Khandaker’s LinkedIn profile (a screenshot of which was taken, in case her profile is subsequently edited).
Apparently, the school chose to honor a student who (as originally reported by Daniel Greenfield) “accused Israel of ‘genocide,” scoffed at anti-Semitism “and even claimed that‘Starbucks supports occupation and Apartheid,’” and whose anti-Pessin writing violated the school’s honor code.
School officials refused to confirm or deny granting the award. What are they hiding? Maybe it’s time for the administration to admit the basic policy underlying their conduct throughout the Pessin affair: anti-Israel voices are to be encouraged, while pro-Israel voices are to be condemned and silenced. They seem to have won: Pessin is silent and nobody knows when he’ll be back on campus.

'Japanese Schindler' Film Tells of the Unsung Hero Who Saved Thousands of Jews - CBN NEWS

'Japanese Schindler' Film Tells of the Unsung Hero Who Saved Thousands of Jews
01-25-2016

A new film about an unsung Japanese hero who saved the lives of some 6,000 Jews during the Holocaust is set to be released.
The dramatization "Persona Non Grata" highlights the story of a Japanese diplomat named Chiune Sugihara (Toshiaki Karasawa).
Sugihara's understanding of multiple languages including English, Russian, German, and French took him to multiple posts during his career.
During World War II, Jews began arriving in Kaunas, Lithuania and to the Japanese consulate seeking visas and safe passage to countries out of the reach of the Germans.
While stationed in Lithuania during World War II, Sugihara defied the orders of his superiors in Tokyo by issuing visas to Jews who were fleeing the Nazis.
Sugihara, who is often called the "Japanese Schindler," is estimated to have saved over 6,000 Jews before he left the country.
Cellin Gluck who is best known for his work on "Remember the Titans" and "Transformers," directed the film.
"Persona Non Grata," is playing in Japan and is scheduled to premiere in the United States Jan. 31.
Israel recognized Sugihara in 1985 for his amazing sacrifice to save the lives of all those Jewish people. It awarded him the designation of being "Righteous Among the Nations."
It is a title only given to a handful of non-Jews who didn't stand-by and do nothing during the Holocaust.

Longing For Israel With the Ongoing Spiritual Crisis - a personal letter from a European friend

Dear Love For His People readers,

In January we received an email in reply from a friend in Europe that we pray for often. They shared the following, which we post after receiving their approval to do so.

We share these words with you in order to let others know what some are experiencing, as the spiritual climate continues to change. We do not disclose their name or country for obvious reasons.

I hope you pray for European believers in those countries. They need us now.

In Jesus' Name,

Steve Martin

"Your greeting means much! It has been very difficult here and it is very difficult to live in (this city) in spiritual crisis. I  have not found a church and my friends do not live close.

I have agony and sorry have not have strength to read your book (Arms of Love and End of Days which we sent in two mailings after publications, at no charge. Two copies each.) Will see if I can read any today.

I am painting paintings and am doing poems for a book. I went outside and God gave me comfort because I met some youth as I could share about Yeshua/Jesus with. They were open.

I gave them like a very little book with Bible Scriptures and where you can ask for more on a New Testament at an (website) address. I told them Jesus loves you. It was sweet when I went because then one of the youth was whispering after me, "God bless you!"
It was nice.

There are some Christian leaders who do not say it exactly here of the serious spiritual crisis. There are few mature Christian leaders in (this country) but it can be changed. Your  website is important! You write many interesting things!

There was a Nazistic demonstration here in (city). It was not nice. I think I am Jewish but have no papers and am longing to Israel as you know. I trust the Lord to open doors.

I pray for you and family!

Shalom and blessings!

P.S. I send you these thoughts as I wrote on stars. I like to think deep and about symbolic things in the Bible.

THOUGHTS ABOUT STARS

Abraham looked at the stars in Gen 15:5.

People are like stars, symbolic Ps 147:4 as I see as with a double meaning also symbolic about people." He counts the number of the stars. He calls them all by name.

Jesus is the Morningstar Rev 22: 16.

Morningstar maybe can mean also sunrise, a star in the morning.

Jesus is like a a sunrise.

God is wonderful like all stars.

God is like the sun in the day and  the moon in the night.

Isaiah 9:2  "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light."

This Scripture talk about hope and light. Jesus is light and hope.

A star gives light in the darkness, a special Star, Jesus, giving light.

He is the Hope.

Jesus is the Word, John 1. Every Bible Scripture is like a star giving light.

I think about all Scriptures and all the stars Abraham looked at at heaven, like the Scriptures are like the stars at heaven. The Bible I also think can be seen like a special Star, giving light.

Jesus is also then the Word and a Star.

I look at the U.S flag and think about Abraham looking at heaven when I see the stars on it.
A symbol on the flag for each state is a star. I think stars can be a symbol, for instance, for this too.

I am also thinking of Israel like a precious star in Gods hand.

Blessings!

Christian Leader: Islam Is More Protected In America Than Christianity - TRUNEWS

Golden cross and black leather bible
Christian Leader: Islam Is More Protected In America Than Christianity  Jan. 23, 2016 TRUNEWS

A preacher at age 18, Dr. Jerry A. Johnson is now the president and CEO of the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB), an organization that thinks our government protects Islam more than Christianity.

“NRB wants to be for the First Amendment, what NRA [National Rifle Association] is for the Second Amendment,” he says in this 22-minute exclusive video interview for The Daily Caller News Foundation.
The federal government is “pushing down” against Christian principles, he explains. Johnson cites concerns that the Federal Communications Commission may decide that broadcasting Christian content is not “in the public interest.” He worries the Internal Revenue Service may deny tax-exempt status to those who espouse contrary positions from the progressive orthodoxy. Hospitals and charities — often begun as Christian charities — must now perform abortions despite their moral foundations. He even fears the Department of Education may use its accreditation leverage to mandate towing the line on same-sex marriage or Islam-friendly policies.
“[You] haven’t heard the president or the State Department condemn the brutal killings of Christians in the Middle East. If some little Muslim group gets pushed around overseas, we hear about that immediately,” Johnson says.
“So, Christians in America feel like, number one, their government is not representing them as Christians. On the other side, here within the United States we feel like the government is saying ‘Whatever you do, don’t attack Islam or Muslims.’ We don’t hear them saying, you know, ‘Anytime a Muslim kills some Christians, whatever you do, don’t attack the Christians; don’t attack the Jews.’ The Judeo-Christian culture feels that the U.S. government is not looking out for their best interests. Judeo-Christian people don’t feel like the government really cares about them.”
Johnson says the same sex marriage decision by the Supreme Court was another frontal assault.
Speaking about growing signs of troubling censorship, the NRB began monitoring social media providers in 2010 with the “John Milton Project.” Some of the censorship victims NRB tracked include: Chuck Colson, Mike Huckabee, Todd Starnes and Allen West. Online providers like Apple, GoFundMe, Twitter, Facebook and Google are “not the neutral platforms people think,” Johnson says. They have an agenda and Johnson calls on Christians to shame these providers for cutting the microphone on people with traditional values.
The providers are “actually choosing, in many cases, to allow the violent ones [the Islamic State] to stay on the platforms and those of us who want to critique, throwing us off. There’s this canard that somehow we’re inciting the violence if we’re call attention to it and critique and warn of it.”
Johnson calls out a group of quiet Christians, “evan-jellyfish leaders,” who keep their heads down in the cultural and political battles of our time. He thinks they overdo “civility” when “we can’t keep this republic by Christians coasting along.”
Johnson’s adds he was “shocked” when President Barack Obama wagged his finger at Republicans on civility during the State of the Union, saying the president threw “cheap shots.” “I don’t know if we’ve ever had a president in modern period to use the State of the Union to mock the other side and belittle the other side quite like that.”
Christianity

In the assault being waged on constitutional governance, Johnson says the modern heroes protecting the Constitution include the tea party, libertarians, Christians and conservatives who are rising up to call for the government to stop the debt, abortions and open borders.
Those on Johnson’s “bad guys list” are secularists, misguided statists, mainstream media and those centrist and establishment politicians who call for the government to “work.” Also on Johnson’s negative list are “deceivers” who he says “do not believe in the First Amendment,” like the American Civil Liberties Union, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and the Counsel for American-Islamic Relations.
Johnson ends the video interview hoping that our country, as others have, can change through revival, reformation, renewal and resurgence of Christian values.

The Prophetic Truth Behind the Rapprochement Between the Pope and the Jews By Rivkah Lambert Adler - BREAKING ISRAEL NEWS

“Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD; but they that deal truly are His delight.” (Proverbs 12:22)
On the surface, it looks like Pope Francis and the Jews are cozying up to one another and becoming besties. Below the surface, an End of Days prophecy that pits Rome against Jerusalem is playing out.
That’s the contention of Rabbi Tovia Singer, a Jewish expert in both Hebrew and Christian Scripture and director of the counter-missionary organization, Outreach Judaism. Singer opens his case by noting the proximity of two recent news items.
Orthodox Rabbis Hold Out An Olive Branch
On December 3, 2015, the Center for Jewish Christian Understanding and Cooperation (CJCUC) issued a statement calling for increased cooperation between Jews and Christians. Rabbi Dr. Eugene Korn, Academic Director of CJCUC told Breaking Israel News, “The statement was addressed to the Jewish community primarily, and secondarily to the Christian community.
“Most of our statement referred to the developments in the Catholic Church (e.g. Nostra Aetate) but it also applies to all Christians and churches who are not actively converting Jews and acknowledge that the biblical covenant between God and the Jewish people is still a valid living covenant.”
Nostra Aetate, passed in 1965, is a declaration by the Catholic Church that the Jewish people of today are not responsible for the death of Jesus. The statement also condemns any expression of anti-Semitism and confirms that “God holds the Jews most dear.”
Korn further commented to Breaking Israel News, “Our statement was not coordinated with the Vatican or the Pope’s request in any explicit way. As Orthodox rabbis, we felt that after 50 years there was a need to express our position on the positive changes brought about by Nostra Aetate and the Church’s affirmation of the validity of the special covenantal relationship between God and the Jewish people, which is the foundation of Judaism.”
Vatican Tells Catholics to Stop Trying to Convert Jews
Just one week later, on December 10, 2015, the Vatican called on Catholics to stop missionizing Jews.
In an extended interview with Breaking Israel News, Singer explained that, while that gesture looked to many like the next stage of friendship between the Jewish people and the Catholic Church, the Vatican’s statement is essentially meaningless since “Roman Catholics haven’t evangelized Jews in 75 years.”
Singer acknowledged that the evangelical Christians who oppose the Vatican’s statement are theologically correct when they claim that Pope Francis is presenting a distorted view of a central Christian teaching. “The New Testament clearly tells that Jews are the primary audience [for conversion],” he told Breaking Israel News.
The end is near. Are you ready?
These two events – the peaceful statement of more than 50 Orthodox rabbis toward Catholicism and the Pope’s command to stop converting Jews – look to many like rapprochement.

However, according to Singer, there’s a third, darker element that has been overlooked by most. This third element, which has prophetic implications, tells the real story of the Catholic Church’s agenda toward Israel.
Pope Makes Friends With Abbas
In May 2015, the Pope drew the Roman Catholic Church closer to the Palestinian Authority when he called PA President Mahmoud Abbas a man of faith and an angel of peace. A month later, in June 2015, the Vatican signed a treaty recognizing the State of Palestine.
Although the modern state of Israel was established in 1948, diplomatic relations between Israel and the Vatican were not established until 1993, 43 years after the founding of the State. Yet the Vatican has already recognized the State of Palestine, despite the fact that no such entity exists.
The Prophecy
According to Singer, the Pope recognizing the PA points to an End of Days prophecy that speaks of Edom (Rome) coming up against Jerusalem. The Jewish people’s conflict with Edom is discussed in the Book of Daniel (2:31-35) which speaks of four exiles of the Jewish people. Until the arrival of the Messiah, the Jewish people, even those who live in Israel, are still in the fourth exile, known as Galut Edom (the Exile of Rome)
The Exile of Rome began when the Romans destroyed the Second Temple in the year 70 CE, and continues until today. It will only end in the Messianic days, when the Third Temple is built. The Book of Obadiah includes a prophecy that, at the End of Days, Edom (Rome) will attempt to come up against Jerusalem a second time.
The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning Edom: We have heard a message from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the nations: ‘Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.’  (Obadiah 1:1)
According to Singer, the surest way for Edom to “rise up against Jerusalem” and destroy Israel is to strengthen her enemy. Thus, the Pope’s friendship with Abbas and his efforts to embolden the PA is the real story, the true fulfillment of the prophecy of Obadiah.
Singer urged that the world not be fooled by signs that the Pope and the Jews are warming up to one another. The Catholic Church’s true agenda, to fight against Jerusalem, as Obadiah prophesied, is being revealed by the Church’s recognition of the non-existent State of Palestine.

LOVE FOR HIS PEOPLE FEATURED BOOK
Paperback: $5.95
Kindle $1.99

My heart yearns for the glory of the Lord Jesus to be revealed in the earth, touching the hearts and souls of men, women and children in each and every nation. As we see the days become darker, we believe that the Lord God of Israel will show Himself strong, and prove that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life, as He says He is.

I wrote this book for you who also long to walk in strong faith, courage and commitment to the end, for whatever the Lord has planned and purposed for you and I. Together, as the Body of Christ, and the glorious Bride that we will become, we will one day see His Kingdom come, His will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. The Gospel, the Good News of salvation, will be declared, and that which is just and good will for all eternity overcome the evil one.
I sincerely believe we are living in the end of days, as prophetic words have been rapidly fulfilled since the re-birth of Israel in 1948. Jesus Himself had said that when we see the fig tree budding, we know that the time is near.
This book, my 10th published in the last three years (all between 2013-2015) and before my 61st birthday, is very special to me. I sense it is something the Lord put on my heart to do several months ago, giving it that “urgency of getting it done and out there” feel as I wrote. Originally these chapters were Now Think On This messages. It was amazing to me how many were done in September and October of 2015 alone, as the Holy Spirit would speak a word or sentence to me, and I would write soon after. I am truly grateful for His impartation, and acknowledge Jesus (Yeshua), my Lord and Savior, above all.
The photos I have included in the book are primarily ones I took (exceptions noted), both to document history and to share another way the Lord also speaks to His Body. Capturing moments of the Holy Spirit action, especially in the two “fire” photos, were exciting. In both cases I wasn’t even aware of it until they were “developed”.
I trust this book will both encourage you and cause you to re-commit yourself - to know the Lord’s will for your life, do all you can to allow Him to direct your steps, and be the light in these dark days we desperately need and have been called upon by the Lord to be. I am with you, arm in arm! Ahava (love in Hebrew) and shalom (peace),
