Sitting on the back porch of my brother Tom Martin’s house in Cedar Falls, Iowa, as the sun rises in the east, brings back memories of our days growing up in Cedar Falls, Iowa, just north up the road on Hwy. 218 an hour or so

Tom and I, along with our little brother Rob, had five sisters between us. Sue, Mary, Colleen, Janet, and Lynn completed the sibling count of eight. Dad and Mom raised a good Catholic family during the 1950s and 1960s.

Family and the memories they bring can be a solid foundation for each of us. Though some are happy to get on with life, leaving their childhood years behind with all the trauma and conflict that went with it, the Lord desires His children to be raised in a good family, with a loving Dad and Mom in the home, and children that honor, respect, and cherish their parents, brothers and sisters.

"Children, do what your parents tell you. This is only right. Honor your father and mother” is the first commandment that has a promise attached to it, namely, “so you will live well and have a long life.” Ephesians 6:2-3, The Message

I could speak on the problems destroying family life today, as there are many, but I choose to consider the blessings that do come when men and women have families, seeking to follow the Lord and His ways.

There are good families in our society these days. There are those who have committed themselves to know the Lord Jesus (Yeshua) and walk in His ways, as He intended.

The man and woman who come together, in godly marriage as set by the Creator, will in turn give themselves, in sacrifice, to have children, with the full intent of raising them to know and fear the Lord.

They will seek to forgo worldly pleasures, to lay down their needs and wants for the sake of the ones the Lord has given into their care.

These men and women believe that children are a blessing from God. They “go without”, as my parents did, to give more to the boys and girls they have in their care, so they too learn the purpose of family and the love it expresses from the Father’s heart.

A society with strong families has the strength to resist ungodly principles, withstand attacks from unruly individuals, and the fortitude to stand firm when forces rise against them from all sides.

I am always encouraged when I see young Israeli families walking the streets of Jerusalem, carriages being pushed by fathers, mothers walking alongside in their place of dignity, honor, and love for all.

This is the intent of our heavenly Father, who looks down with pleasure and enjoyment Himself on those who choose to walk in His plans and purposes.

For those of us in our later years, we can encourage the younger generations to have families, as the Lord purposed. To live for others whom He would place in their care. To reveal His heart to the nations, through the prime example of godly families.

I also want to thank you, who are now grandparents, for the tremendous sacrifices you made years ago, giving of yourselves for your children, and who now enjoy the fruit of your labor as your grandchildren rise up among you.

Prescription Painkiller Crisis: Why Do Americans Consume 80 Percent Of All Prescription Painkillers? Posted: 14 Mar 2016  Michael Snyder  THE ECONOMIC COLLAPSE BLOG If Americans are so happy, then why do we consume 80 percent of the entire global supply of prescription painkillers?  Less than 5 percent of the world’s population lives in this country, and yet we buy four-fifths of these highly addictive drugs.  In the United States today, approximately 4.7 million Americans are addicted to prescription pain relievers, and that represents about a 300 percent increase since 1999.   If you personally know someone that is suffering from this addiction, then you probably already know how immensely destructive these drugs can be.  Someone that was formally living a very healthy and normal life can be reduced to a total basket case within a matter of weeks. And of course many don’t make it back at all.  According to the CDC, more than 28,000 Americans died from opioid overdoses in 2014.  Incredibly, those deaths represented 60 percent of all drug overdose deaths in the United States for that year… A report released by the US Centers for Disesase Control and Prevention (CDC) in January revealed that drug-overdose deaths reached a new high in 2014, totaling 47,055 people. Opioids, a type of powerful painkiller that requires a prescription, were involved in 60% of those deaths. Many Americans that start out on legal opioids quickly find themselves moving over to heroin because it is often cheaper and easier to obtain, and the U.S. is now facing a tremendous epidemic of heroin abuse as well.  In fact, the number of Americans that die of a heroin overdose nearly quadrupled between 2000 to 2013. Finally, the federal government has started to take notice of this crisis.  A bill was recently passed to spend more than a billion dollars over the next two year fighting this problem. But as long as doctors are writing thousands upon thousands of new prescriptions for these painkillers each year, this crisis is not going to go away any time soon. In the Appalachians, these prescription painkillers are commonly known as “hillbilly heroin“, and all of the attention that the New Hampshire primaries received focused a lot of attention on how this crisis is destroying countless numbers of lives up in the Northeast.  But one survey found that the states with the biggest problems with painkiller addiction are actually in the West… The National Survey on Drug Use and Health, a survey of approximately 67,500 people across the United States, found that the states with the highest rates of narcotic painkiller abuse were in the West – Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington. Unless you are about to die, I would very strongly recommend that you resist any attempt by your doctor to put you on these “medications”.  Just consider what happened to one stay-at-home mother named Norah Mangan… I am an educated, suburban wife and stay-at-home mother of four. Life had been good to me until a fateful visit with an orthopedic physician, my chief complaint being mild arthritic pain in my toes. My physician handed me the first of many monthly prescriptions for Oxycodone and what followed that appointment was a rapid descent into hell. Within six months, I had become a raving drug addict. Before too long, Norah had to turn to means that were less than legal in order to keep fueling her addiction.  Her life was turned into a complete and utter disaster by drugs that were legally prescribed to her… It wasn’t long before my legal monthly prescription fell woefully short in terms of keeping my life altering pain at bay. In the interest of not incriminating myself, I’ll simply share that when procured through other means, Oxycodone generally sells for one dollar per milligram. I was draining our savings and was out of my mind. I was so tortured that I didn’t care about the deterioration of my moral values, in fact, I didn’t even notice.  It’s hard to imagine that in such a short period of time I had morphed from a Mrs. Cleaver, baking hot cinnamon buns in anticipation of my children’s arrival home from school, to Scarface crushing pills on the glass top of the executive desk in our home office while thinking to myself as I heard them arrive from school…why oh why are they home already? You can read the rest of her amazing story right here… The truth is that we are the most drugged people on the face of the planet.  It has been estimated that 52 million Americans over the age of 12 have used prescription drugs in non-medical ways, and this problem gets worse with each passing year. According to research that was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 59 percent of all U.S. adults are currently on at least one prescription drug, and 15 percent of all U.S. adults are on at least five prescription drugs.  And the numbers are far worse for older Americans.  The following statistics come from one of my previous articles… –According to the CDC, approximately 9 out of every 10 Americans that are at least 60 years old say that they have taken at least one prescription drug within the last month. –There is an unintentional drug overdose death in the United States every 19 minutes. –In the United States today, prescription painkillers kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined. –According to the CDC, approximately three quarters of a million people a year are rushed to emergency rooms in the United States because of adverse reactions to pharmaceutical drugs. –The percentage of women taking antidepressants in America is higher than in any other country in the world. –Children in the United States are three times more likely to be prescribed antidepressants as children in Europe are. –A shocking Government Accountability Office report discovered that approximately one-third of all foster children in the United States are on at least one psychiatric drug. –A survey conducted for the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that more than 15 percent of all U.S. high school seniors abuse prescription drugs. We are a deeply unhappy nation that has been trained to turn to pills as a “quick fix” for our hurt and our pain. Yes, there are medical situations that call for prescription pain relievers.  But what we are seeing in America today goes far, far beyond that.  We are a nation of addicts that is always in search of a way to fill the gaping holes that we feel deep in our hearts.  This prescription pain killer crisis is just another symptom of a much deeper problem. So what is the solution?

Three of the latest Palestinian terrorist attacks against Israeli Jews were carried out by children aged 13, 15 and 16. All three of these children were encouraged to commit heinous crimes by programming on Palestinian Authority TV, as confirmed by the 16-year-old killer of Dafna Meir, a Jewish mother of six.

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely (pictured) said Western governments are ultimately responsible for this because it is they who bankroll the Palestinian Authority without demanding proper accountability.

Of course, Palestinian parents also have a role to play.

The father of the aforementioned 16-year-old killer told Israeli media that he opposed the attack, but when speaking before Palestinian cameras he praised the actions of his son.

The father of a 13-year-old Palestinian girl, Rakia Abu Ayid, who was shot and killed while trying to stab Israelis, likewise said he was proud of what his child had done. “Praise be to Allah. This was done in service to Al Aqsa Mosque and Palestine,” the father told Palestinian TV. “She will now meet her siblings in paradise and Allah will have mercy!”

A similar account was given by the parents of a 15-year-old Palestinian boy who was shot and killed after stabbing and moderately wounding a pregnant Jewish woman in Judea. The boy’s mother called him a “holy martyr.”

Hotovely told Israel Radio on Monday that Western governments involved in the peace process need to take responsibility for their role in this tragic situation.

“The international community needs to intervene here. It is unreasonable that money given by the West to the Palestinian Authority is used to incite terrorism against Israel,” she said.

Indeed, the West seems almost entirely unconcerned about what has become of the roughly $21.5 billion given to the Palestinians over the past 25 years. “Where’s has all that money gone?” wondered Hotovely.

Over the years I have always been amazed at the strength, character, and the sheer determination that comes forth from the heart of a single mom towards her children. Especially those women that have been left behind with small children, with little or no income from the father or husband. My heart has gone out to them many times, trying to give wisdom and support in whatever manner or level of assistance that was necessary and appropriate. But I know I never personally did enough.

From the beginning it has always been in the heart of God the Father to have each and every person in a family. Beginning with Adam and Eve, He desired that together a man and a woman, as husband and wife, would bring forth children, and share in the responsibility of provision and full support until the children reached adulthood. They were to instruct their offspring in the ways of the Lord, and then watch them raise their own family at the proper time.

Far too often, primarily because of death, divorce, or a one-night stand leaving the girl with no man around, many teenagers and young women have been left all alone to raise the child/children. It is a very tough job. Only they know just how tough it is, as loneliness, despair and discouragement abound.

There are many who have chosen not to depend solely on the government, but instead are working one or two jobs, or more, to pay the rent, buy the food, keep the kids clothed and warm, while making sure they are getting a good education. It all weighs very heavily on them daily. If there is no extended family around, or a church that understands their role to assist them, it is very overbearing. Tragically, we as believers have far too often left it up to the government to provide support and provision for them.

I don’t have all the answers. But I do know that our Lord has a tremendous heart for these single moms, and the kids that they daily lay down their life for. I believe He has gifted people in His body to be there for them. I do hope those ones take every opportunity, with the Lord’s grace and provision, to do so, while the rest of us help hold up their arms also.

If you are a single mom, I pray you will be comforted, cared for, and given the love you need and desire, as much as you have given out already for your kids.

And I pray the Body of Jesus Christ will rise up and have you in the family you are meant to be joined with, in the larger family of our Lord.

5 Reasons You Shouldn't Cohabitate Before Marriage

Are you single or dating someone you think may be the one? Or do you have kids who are dating and may be thinking wedding bells at some point?

If so, you may want to consider the importance of marrying before moving in together or of teaching your kids about the pitfalls of shacking up.

More and more couples are choosing to move in together before marriage. One reason is to save on rent. Yes, saving on rent. Saving on rent is not, and should not be, a reason to live with someone who may or may not become your spouse. In fact, it is a really bad reason. Below are five reasons shacking up is a bad idea:

1. No blessings from God. The Bible considers shacking up the opposite of a legitimate marriage. A legitimate marriage consists of a union between a man and woman who have made a covenant and commitment. Shacking up involves neither. Marriage was a union created by God and is a union God blesses.

2. Your relationship will probably end. An article on examiner.com states that 80 percent of shacking-up relationships end before marriage or in divorce after marriage. So, it is 80/20 against you getting married or staying married to that person. One reason is because there is not a commitment when you move in before marriage. A relationship without commitment will not last, and marriage is the biggest commitment you can make in life.

3. Your children will be negatively affected. To the parents who have children, your kids are three times as likely to be expelled from school or get pregnant, five times more likely to live in poverty, and 22 times more likely to be incarcerated—all because you choose to live with someone you're not married to.

4. It makes you lazy. As a married man, I know that once dating ends, the relationship changes. Living together removes the "being your best" part of your relationship. Kind of like most job interviews—you wore the suit to the interview, but once hired, you show up in khakis and a polo. And if you're living with a woman and getting some of the "benefits" of marriage—sex, having someone to help around the house, sharing the bills—you can also get lazy about taking the next step in your relationship.
