When Elisha was called to be a prophet, he was out plowing a field.

When you think about it, he must have been an unusual man. He was out there with 12 yoke of oxen - 24 massive animals - all under his control, the reins in his hands. Elisha was no sissy! He must have been a pretty big guy to handle all of them at once.

Elisha knew he was called because Elijah walked up to him, put his mantle around him and then walked away.

I can imagine Elisha crying, "What have you done to me?!"

And Elijah replying, "I have done nothing to you. This is the Lord's doing."

Several years later, after Elijah was taken into Heaven, Elisha received the mantle a second time. He used it to perform a miracle, asking, "Where is the Lord God of Elijah?" That began the double-anointing message Elisha was able to bring. He did exactly double the miracles, double the signs, double everything Elijah did. He asked God for that double portion, and the Lord gave it to him.

And it began out in a field, when a mantle was tossed around his shoulders.

Signs of Your Calling

If you are called to be a prophet, one of the first things you need to understand is that the calling makes you absolutely, positively nothing special. It makes you a potential failure - but it doesn't make you anything special, because "many are called, but few are chosen" (Matthew 22:14). That statement is very true in the prophetic realm.

What are some of the potential signs you've been called by God to be a prophet? You might experience supernatural events such as trances, visitations of angels or being taken into the heavenlies, as Paul was.

People might begin to tell you that you have a "different spirit" about you. When I was very young, people would tell me that I had a different spirit. I didn't know what they were talking about. I thought, it's because I've got dark hair and they are blonde or something. In college, people told me they were afraid of me, because my eyes seemed to look right through them.

"Well, I can't look right through you!" I answered. I had no idea. I didn't correlate any of those things with having a prophetic ministry.

As Samuel experienced, the Lord might appear to you. Not only did the Lord speak to Samuel, calling him by name, but 1 Samuel 3 says that the Lord appeared to Samuel "again" or "often" there at Shiloh.

The people around you might inadvertently begin to hint at your calling. They might suggest you're strange. They might say, "How did you know that? That must have been God!"

Then leaders will begin to recognize your gift. But remember the truth of Proverbs 18:16: If you have a gift, it will make room for itself. God will open the door to you. He is the One who called you - He can bring His call to fruition in your life.

Keep in Mind

The first portion of your training as a prophet is the "called" portion. It is the seemingly ambiguous time of walking around and doing strange things, parents not understanding you, friends not understanding you, spouses not understanding you. Sometimes, depending on your choices, you become a better person during this initial "shakeup"; sometimes you become worse.

In 1980 when I had my first visitation, I became a better man, and my wife was so happy! She knew something had happened because I wasn't the same yucky guy I had been before it happened. Everything began to get better: our jobs, our businesses, our marriage, our finances. Something cataclysmic and good had happened to me, and it changed our lives.

Being called to the prophetic office is not an easy thing. There is "prophetic blood" you spill that nobody knows about. There are tears you shed in private, and at the time you shed them, it seems that nobody understands them.

But here's the key: God is the One who called you, and He is the One who can bring that call to fruition in your life. The Bible says He actually stores your tears. Why would He do that if they didn't matter to Him? Not one of them is lost. So if you're dealing with any of the difficulties we talked about in this article, take heart. God is your support, and He can cause all things to work out for your good.

My 10 Year Ordination Anniversary..after the double.

Ten Year Anniversary
Jan. 18, 2004

Ten years ago, on Jan. 18, 2004, I was ordained into the ministry. Jim Hill, Mark C. DeVito, Brian Cockfield, Allen Robinson were the ordaining ministers, through Cornerstone Fellowship in Pineville, NC. Prophetic words spoken then have surely come to fulfillment already in many ways, especially in regards to "holding a staff for Zion" (Israel).

And then to make sure it "stuck" (my word) I was ordained again with Christians For Messiah Ministries (Peter Wyns, Richard Tompkins and Jesse Enns, pastors at Antioch International Church in Fort Mill, SC.) on Nov. 24, 2009.

It was the day after my 55th birthday, just to make sure I got the "double anointing" that Elisha also asked for! (5-5 on 2nd ordination)

Popular Blog Takes Messianics to Task Over Christ at the Checkpoint - ISRAEL TODAY

Popular Blog Takes Messianics to Task Over Christ at the Checkpoint

Tuesday, February 18, 2014 |  Israel Today Staff
Popular Messianic Jewish blog “Rosh Pina Project” has posted a biting critique of the upcoming Christ at the Checkpoint conference in Bethlehem, and of the Israeli Messianic leaders who continue to participate in and speak at the event.
On Sunday, we highlighted that Israeli terror victim Kay Wilson was turned down after requesting to speak at the 2012 Christ at the Checkpoint. Kay and her visiting Christian friend, Kristine Luken, were brutally attacked by Palestinian terrorists in 2010. Kay was severely wounded and forced to watch Luken murdered before her eyes.
As both Israel Today and Rosh Pina Project clearly suggested, Kay Wilson would have been an ideal speaker at Christ at the Checkpoint, assuming the organizers genuinely intended the event to be a platform for reconciliation. But that wasn’t the case.
“Once again in Bethlehem, there was no room at the inn,” wrote the authors of Rosh Pina Project.
As the blog noted, “there was always a sense that the dice were loaded in Bethlehem.” Few could ignore the fact that the conference had welcomed endorsements from the Palestinian Authority and the former mayor of Bethlehem, who has documented ties to terrorist organizations. Not to mention the star-studded line-up of Christian theologians famous for advocating what can only be honestly described as Replacement Theology.
As such, it wasn’t all that surprising that Christ at the Checkpoint had no interest in hearing from Kay Wilson. What was truly galling, as Rosh Pina Project pointed out, was the utter lack of a public response by those same Messianic leaders who insisted Christ at the Checkpoint was and is a genuine platform for reconciliation.
Nor is the problem confined to those few Messianic leaders who take part in the conference. The rest of the body of believers in Israel, while generally opposing Christ at the Checkpoint’s central message, seems too cowed to take a unified and determined stand and confront the misguided teachings of their Palestinian brothers in faith.

Open Doors - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Open Doors
by Steve Martin

“They went to Phrygia, and then on through the region of Galatia. Their plan was to turn west into Asia province, but the Holy Spirit blocked that route. So they went to Mysia and tried to go north to Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus wouldn’t let them go there either. Proceeding on through Mysia, they went down to the seaport Troas.

That night Paul had a dream: A Macedonian stood on the far shore and called across the sea, “Come over to Macedonia and help us!” The dream gave Paul his map. We went to work at once getting things ready to cross over to Macedonia. All the pieces had come together. We knew now for sure that God had called us to preach the good news to the Europeans.” (Acts 16:7-10 The Message)

Beginning in the Jewish new year of 5774 (Sept. 2013), many prophetic words were coming forth in the Body of Christ about it being a year of “open doors” and “acceleration”.  I could positively attest to those words personally. It happened, and it continues onward.

But it wasn’t until I actually believed it for myself. Yes. I had to believe. Not only in my head, but also in my heart. Probably what you do too at times. Right?

In the Scripture about we read of Paul trying to go one way. I am sure he believed it was the way the Lord was leading. He was on the move, following the last directive given by the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh). Obedience to the previous word was going to get him to the next open door that he would walk through. In his going, he was pushing forward in the understanding he had.

Like most of us, we can expect the Lord to lead in this way. In another example from His Written Word (the Logos) it tells us about a directive for an open door to Peter.

Send therefore to Joppa and call Simon here, whose surname is Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea. When he comes, he will speak to you.’ So I sent to you immediately, and you have done well to come. Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God. Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.” (Acts 10:32-35 NKJV)

Peter had been very hesitant to share the Gospel with the Gentiles. In fact, he didn’t quite believe it was for anyone outside of the Jewish nation. (Take the time to read all of Acts 10 to get the full picture.) After all, he was a Jew, and the Messiah of Israel was believed to be only for the Jews. That was deeply ingrained in his mind.

Both Peter and Paul were great men of God. But like all men and women of faith, they had to have a mind reset at times, to receive a greater understanding of the Lord’s heart. And after getting that a bit more straight, they too had to then follow the directive  in obedience and perseverance to get through to the next open door.

God is not a respecter of persons, nor does He show partiality. Thus we can learn from Peter and Paul (and Mary too! I am throwing that in for the ‘60’s and ‘70’s generation.) I believe they had in their mind that the Lord was going to work in one way, and so in strong commitment they went in that direction. Again, in obedience to the revelation they had received up to that point.

But then their direction changed. Did the Lord change His mind? No. He was just getting each on them to the point where they could make the adjustment, the turn in direction, to more tune in to His plans and purposes. Being they were open to whatever He said, they followed.

In our minds and hearts following hard after the Lord, we can think He has an open door in front of us that we are to walk through. So we move forward for that opportunity. But along the way, as the Lord fine tunes our perspective and understanding, what seemingly then may become a closed door is only a momentary adjustment in our “going” to get us to the next open door. That is not a bad thing. We just need to be flexible enough to make that adjustment also.

We all have open doors. It is not a question of “Yes we do or no we don’t.” Settle it in your heart and mind – we have the open doors. With our eyes fixed on Jesus (Yeshua), the Author and Finisher of our faith, He will continually lead us on the road. A turn here, a turn there on the way to the destination. It is in His heart to get us each to the place appointed for us since the beginning of time.

Be open to the open door in front of you. If you feel like you are pushing, and the door is bolted shut, then relax a bit and ask if the other door in front of you is the next one He has for you. Then in obedience walk through it.

Now think on this,

Chinese Bamboo Tree - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Chinese Bamboo Tree
Steve Martin

“However, we want each one of you to keep showing the same diligence right up to the end, when your hope will be realized; so that you will not become sluggish, but will be imitators of those who by their trust and patience are receiving what has been promised.”
Hebrews 6:11-12 CJB

I first heard the story of the Chinese bamboo tree in the late 1990’s. As the administrator of All Nations Church in Charlotte, NC, pastored by Mahesh and Bonnie Chavda, others and myself were anticipating the growth in the church membership. All involved with the new church plant in this Carolina region, begun in 1994, were working hard, giving what each had been gifted to do, in leadership, service, and care for the people.

Mahesh spoke one Sunday morning, and again at the all-night prayer time that Friday night following, called the Watch of the Lord, about the Chinese bamboo tree. It was an encouraging word, both to the church as a group, and to individuals specifically. Myself included.

In helping us visualize what can happen in the spiritual, by looking at natural examples the Lord gives us, Mahesh explained the amazing characteristics of this particular plant species. He spoke of how it is most often the way the Lord starts and grows a work that He has initiated. If He birthed it, He will see that it thrives, as we hear and obey along the way. But the way isn’t what we always think it will be. Or at least hope it will be.

Briefly, this particular bamboo, after being planted as a sprout, is watered, fertilized, watered, fertilized, watered, fertilized, again and again and again. Year after year. But there is no visible evidence that anything is happening. During that time, it certainly can be very challenging to one’s faith, especially if you are the one hauling the water and the fertilizer!

Year one passes. Nothing seen. Year two comes and goes. Nothing. But yet you remain faithful, believing the unseen will become the seen.

Year three. “Nada” (as is “nothing” in Spanish.) Year four - “Niet” (“no” in Russian.) Year five – “klum” (nothing) in Hebrew. But year five!

In a 23 day period, the Chinese bamboo explodes upward 22 feet into the sky. And in the short period of six weeks total, it can reach 80 feet! Remarkable! World Book Encyclopedia records that one bamboo plant can grow three feet in a simple twenty-four-hour period.

The question is then asked – did it grow 80 feet in six weeks or 80 feet in five years? I’m saying the later.

During that five year period, the root system, unseen, was being developed. Once the time had come to shoot upwards, the foundation had already been laid. This would then sustain the height and weight of the full grown tree. In addition to the upward growth, shoots had been sent out, also below ground level. This multiplication can come up through the soil up to ten feet away.

What a natural visual for us in the spiritual. Builds your faith, right? You who have been laboring, faithfully, in the natural, all the time hoping, believing to see the increase come in the spiritual. Prayer, reading the Lo

You have been waiting. You have been doing. You have been crying out to the Lord for more results.

The time is coming. For you, it may be the 5th year now.

God the Father has given us examples of those who have gone before us – Joseph, David, even Yeshua (Jesus) Himself. Each had to spend the time needed to first develop the character, before the time of the release. They then had the capacity for strength, wisdom and love to hold the weight of the assignment He had for them. As for them, so for you - that eternal purpose He has for you.

My prayer is that you will not quit in the third year. That you will keep believing through the fourth year. And that you will get the reward in that fifth year.

Our God is a faithful God. His promises are true to you.

Ahava,

Steve Martin
