July 4th - Christian Quotes of the Founding Fathers

This is what they really said. And they didn't "separate" church and state. Steve Martin, Editor

Christian Quotes of the Founding Fathers - Quotes on Christianity, Faith, Jesus and the Bible

No one can deny that many of the founding fathers of the United States of America were men of deep religious convictions based in the Bible and their Christian faith in Jesus Christ. Of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence, nearly half (24) held seminary or Bible school degrees.

These Christian quotes of the founding fathers will give you an overview of their strong moral and spiritual convictions which helped form the foundations of our nation and our government.

George Washington
1st U.S. President

"While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian."
--The Writings of Washington, pp. 342-343.

John Adams
2nd U.S. President and Signer of the Declaration of Independence

"Suppose a nation in some distant Region should take the Bible for their only law Book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited! Every member would be obliged in conscience, to temperance, frugality, and industry; to justice, kindness, and charity towards his fellow men; and to piety, love, and reverence toward Almighty God ... What a Eutopia, what a Paradise would this region be."
--Diary and Autobiography of John Adams, Vol. III, p. 9.

"The general principles, on which the Fathers achieved independence, were the only Principles in which that beautiful Assembly of young Gentlemen could Unite, and these Principles only could be intended by them in their address, or by me in my answer. And what were these general Principles?

I answer, the general Principles of Christianity, in which all these Sects were United: And the general Principles of English and American Liberty, in which all those young Men United, and which had United all Parties in America, in Majorities sufficient to assert and maintain her Independence.

"Now I will avow, that I then believe, and now believe, that those general Principles of Christianity, are as eternal and immutable, as the Existence and Attributes of God; and that those Principles of Liberty, are as unalterable as human Nature and our terrestrial, mundane System."
--Adams wrote this on June 28, 1813, excerpt from a letter to Thomas Jefferson.

"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.

It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever."
--Adams wrote this in a letter to his wife, Abigail, on July 3, 1776.

Thomas Jefferson
3rd U.S. President, Drafter and Signer of the Declaration of Independence

"God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the Gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever;

That a revolution of the wheel of fortune, a change of situation, is among possible events; that it may become probable by Supernatural influence! The Almighty has no attribute which can take side with us in that event."
--Notes on the State of Virginia, Query XVIII, p. 237.

"I am a real Christian – that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus Christ."
--The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, p. 385.

John Hancock
1st Signer of the Declaration of Independence

"Resistance to tyranny becomes the Christian and social duty of each individual. ... Continue steadfast and, with a proper sense of your dependence on God, nobly defend those rights which heaven gave, and no man ought to take from us."
--History of the United States of America, Vol. II, p. 229.

Benjamin Franklin
Signer of the Declaration of Independence and Unites States Constitution

"Here is my Creed. I believe in one God, the Creator of the Universe. That He governs it by His Providence. That He ought to be worshipped.

"That the most acceptable service we render to him is in doing good to his other children. That the soul of man is immortal, and will be treated with justice in another life respecting its conduct in this. These I take to be the fundamental points in all sound religion, and I regard them as you do in whatever sect I meet with them.

"As to Jesus of Nazareth, my opinion of whom you particularly desire, I think the system of morals and his religion, as he left them to us, is the best the world ever saw, or is likely to see;

"But I apprehend it has received various corrupting changes, and I have, with most of the present dissenters in England, some doubts as to his divinity; though it is a question I do not dogmatize upon, having never studied it, and think it needless to busy myself with it now, when I expect soon an opportunity of knowing the truth with less trouble.

I see no harm, however, in its being believed, if that belief has the good consequence, as probably it has, of making his doctrines more respected and more observed; especially as I do not perceive, that the Supreme takes it amiss, by distinguishing the unbelievers in his government of the world with any peculiar marks of his displeasure."
--Benjamin Franklin wrote this in a letter to Ezra Stiles, President of Yale University on March 9, 1790.

Arab Christians: Israel only state worth fighting for

Arab Christians: Israel only state worth fighting for

Wednesday, July 03, 2013 |  Ryan Jones
Arab Christian residents of Nazareth who proudly serve in the Israeli army and encourage their children to do the same are coming under increasing attack, and Israel is starting to take notice and come to their aid.
For a number of years now, a group of Nazareth Christians who are officers in the Israeli army have been actively recruiting young local Arabs to follow in their footsteps and serve the Jewish state.
Israel Today has reported extensively on this phenomenon in our print edition. Don't miss any more coverage - SUBSCRIBE NOW
Though not an officer himself, one of the main figures in this movement is Greek Orthodox cleric Father Gabriel Nadaf. Late last month, the Greek Orthodox patriarch in Jerusalem, acting on demands from Muslim Arab members of Israel's Knesset, threated to fire Nadaf.
Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Interior Minister Gideon Saar immediately called the priest to convey their support and offer their assistance.
On Wednesday, Israel's Attorney General's Office announced that it had opened an investigation into the activities of the Muslim Knesset members who pushed for Nadaf's dismissal.
"It’s unacceptable that Arab MKs should think that they can be Trojan horses in the Knesset and send letters of incitement against a Christian priest who encourages young Christians to enlist in the IDF," said Likud MK Miri Regev during a Knesset Interior Committee hearing on the matter.
Many Arab politicians vehemently oppose Arab participation in Israeli national service for fear it will legitimize the existence of the Jewish state (which pays their paychecks).
Meanwhile, the pro-Israel Arab Christians of Nazareth are becoming increasingly bold in their stance, and even dared to hold a public gathering late last month to toast the achievements of their new forum whose goal is convincing more young Arabs to join the army, as reported by Israel's Ma'ariv newspaper.
"We chose to hold the conference to demonstrate that nothing will deter us," forum spokesman Moran Khaloul told the newspaper. "We don’t live in Syria, where Christians are not allowed to speak...or in Iraq, where churches are bombed. We live in a Jewish state, which is democratic and free. As Israeli Christians we see ourselves as part of this state and not as part of those who oppose it."
Khaloul said that until now, many in the community had been too afraid to speak out, but that was going to change. Many are now even referring to themselves openly as "Israeli Christians."
Ali, an organizer for the forum, noted that local Arabs see what is happening across the Middle East and realize that Israel is the only place in the region where Christians can feel safe and belong. "That’s why more and more of us are realizing that there is no other country here that is worth fighting for," he added.
Some went even deeper in their reasoning for joining the army of the Jewish state.
Henry Zahav, a 12th grader who intends to join the IDF gave this moving answer when asked by Ma'ariv why he made that decision: "Ultimately, from a religious point of view, we are one. Jesus was a Jew, his mother was a Jew, and his 12 disciples were Jews."

Leadership Through Love - Chapter 6 - "The Visionaries Need You!" (Steve Martin)

           Chapter 6
The Visionaries Need You!

-         They dream it - but you really make it happen
-         It takes a team. Not the Lone Ranger concept.
 -    The big head won’t get far without the neck
             (or heads will roll)

Did you ever see the Headless Horseman movie? The one who rides around in the woods on the horse during the night? (I guess since he can’t see, it doesn’t matter if it is day or night though, huh?)

Now imagine a head riding around on a horse without a neck, or without the rest of the body. Maybe it could happen in a sci-fi movie, but not in a business or ministry.

Visionaries dream the dreams, speak the dreams, share the dreams, and desire the dreams to come about. But without you, the other leadership, administrator and the support team (the rest of the body), not much will happen. The Lord has purposely set it in place that His whole Body will be needed for His work to be fulfilled.

You are a very vital part of the work, and without you doing your part, the visionary may not see his or her dream come to fruition. And without you realizing your importance and place in this part of the body, it most likely won’t happen. Or at least not to the extent that the Lord knows it can be, and wants it to be.

Without the neck to support the head, which will then allow the head to move about, the head may end up just “rolling around”, or being the Headless Horseman riding through the woods, trying to make the dream or vision happen. (Or is this the real picture when we hear or say that the “heads will roll”? A bit comical it is, I think.)

Visionaries need the administrators. They need the team. They can’t “move” without them – in the natural nor in the spiritual.

When I was a younger man, I was with the second ministry that I was blessed to work with, Mahesh Chavda Ministries. Early on in the job as the administrator, I was a bit shaky and lacking much needed confidence. Since 1978, when I first met Mahesh Chavda in LaSalles-Peru, Illinois, I had  a real desire to work with this ministry, but after a number of what I thought were “closed doors”, it looked like it was not going to happen.

(L-R) Andrew Maki, Art Maki, Bonnie Chavda
The Barn - 1995 in Charlotte, NC

The Lord had been the One who opened this door, in a very clear way earlier, but the right timing had to come to pass, and both sides involved needed to have confirming words that this was indeed the Lord. Unknown to me at the beginning, I would serve with this ministry team for 14 years. A good foundational building for the long term needed to be established, and it was important that we each realized this, as much as we were capable of knowing it.

We see in part, and know in part. So often the Lord needs to give us confirming words of encouragement along the way, to help us keep going, and do what is necessary to keep building the spiritual building.

Two prophetic words were spoken to me, one prior to my coming on staff with MCM, and one during the initial years. The first one occurred during the summer of 1990, in Kansas City, where I had gone with my family to assist Mahesh Chavda at a conference, while on our vacation. Nine months earlier I was supposed to have started with Mahesh Chavda Ministries, but what looked like a “death blow” to the connection had taken place, leaving me almost without a job either at Derek Prince Ministries or MCM. My family and I were thus preparing to move from Fort Lauderdale back to either the Midwest, in the land where Laurie and I grew up, or to Charlotte, NC, where things seemed to be happening spiritually.

At the end of the conference where we were at in Kansas City, I had gone up to the platform to help “catch” those who were “slain in the Spirit” during the prayer time. Jim Goll, one of the leaders and speakers of the host Kansas City Fellowship, and having a well known prophetic ministry, came over to me at the end of the prayer time, and spoke this very encouraging word, which put faith back into my heart.

“You are the very one whom this minister needs, to do that which the Lord wants to have done through him. There is not another at this time. It is you whom he needs as the administrator. You have what he needs. You are the man, not another.”

Five months later the Lord’s time came to pass, for me to come on full time on the team of Mahesh and Bonnie Chavda, as the Administrator. But during that long five months (and even during the times of doubt that still came later), I made it a point to re-read this prophetic word that had kept me hoping and waiting for the right time to come.

(L-R) Steve Martin, Mike Adams, Mahesh Chavda,
Jodie Goodman, Leslie Adams

Another encouraging word was spoken to me within the first year in this position. Wanting to do the best I could, with my heart desiring to see Africa, Israel, and the other nations touched that this ministry had an affect in, I had concerns that I still didn’t have what was needed for the job. With only one year of college, no degree, and other “lacks” and skills that the world says you need to be an administrator, the concerns seemed understandable and justified.

Bonnie, who I considered my pastor in certain aspects, believing she understood many things I was going through in trying to serve properly, spoke a word to me “out of the blue”. As I was doing yard work around their home, as part of my duties, she came up to me and said that my administrative skills weren’t just something I had learned in the natural, but was indeed a spiritual gift that the Lord had given me. I had a gift from the Lord, which was in administration. (The Scriptures call it the “gift of helps” as one description.)

That was the first time I had ever heard that. I thought the administrative skills, knowledge and wisdom that I had were strictly due to my upbringing, which certainly had its important part, or the “learning on-the-job” that I had received in my prior fifteen years of management.

What this did was reveal to me that the Lord had placed me in this spiritual position. It was His gifts given to me, for His purposes to be fulfilled, that enabled me to do the job that needed to be done. My lack of natural training was “overlooked” because His Holy Spirit, working in and through me, gave me wisdom and understanding to support the visionary and the ministry.

What I came to understand even more, as the Holy Spirit continued to bring understanding to this gift in my life, was that this gift is one of the foundational stones necessary to build a strong building, and support the work placed upon it. He continued to show me the need that exits within the body of Christ, requiring this gifting, and even more specifically, those who are called to be the visionaries and whom serve in the apostolic work, need this gifting.

The head needs the neck to rest on, move about with, and be a connector to the rest of the body in the church, or the business staff.

Hey, the visionaries need you, the administrators, staff leaders and all the rest! Do your part!

The Restoration of Biblical Culture - Morris Ruddick

Morris Ruddick

The Restoration of Biblical Culture

Over the centuries, the church has been inundated by the precepts of men, draining the power of the first-century church. Even today, Christian culture reflects an intertwining of pure biblical truth with doctrinal precepts which serve as simplifications and sometimes props that stymie a mature grasp of the truth.

Yet, progressively over the centuries and even more in our day, there has been a remnant and a restoration in grasping and applying the truth and culture that operated in the early church. We live in a time of turbulence when more is needed.

A key part of this restoration of biblical culture today is found in the foundations in the biblical, Jewish roots to the faith. In 1967 there emerged a movement capturing and restoring an old dimension to the identity of Jewish believers. With that has come a growing recognition in the church of the Jewish foundations that were at the heart of the early church. Jesus' Kingdom message is culturally very Jewish.

"In those days ten men from all the nations will grasp the garment of a Jew saying," Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you." Zech. 8:23

This restoration now has extended to where Jew and Gentile, as "one new man" are recapturing dynamics of worship that were at the heart of the vibrancy of the first-century church.

"So that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace." Eph. 2:15

In conclusion, there is a culture war taking place all around us; but it's also happening within the ranks of our organizations. God never intended those known by His Name to be like everyone else. Our identity is to be distinctive, in Him. The response demands true leadership. That means a mature, strategic leadership in which we serve, like Joseph and Daniel, as ambassadors in the culture war within, as well as the one with which we are surrounded (2 Cor 5:20).

There's no perfect organization, just as there is no perfect believer. However, what is involved is a pure heart. What is required is in the reach for the higher standard. That holds great potential when it comes from the parallel between the poise of the soul and the culture. And THAT is an issue for leadership by anointing.

"Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind." Phil.

Derek Prince - 'WHEN You Fast, not IF' (sermon)

Derek Prince teaching the Church

Derek Prince sharing the Word

Peter Derek Vaughan Prince (Bangalore, August 14, 1915 - Jerusalem, September 24, 2003) was an international Bible teacher. He is buried in Jerusalem, where he lived the past 20+ years. His first wife Lydia, who passed on before him, is buried in the same cemetery, as is Ruth, his second wife. His nine adopted daughters live in various countries, including the USA, England and New Zealand.

His whose daily radio program, Derek Prince Legacy Radio, continues to broadcast to half the population of the world in various languages. These languages include English, Arabic, Spanish, Croatian, Russian, Malagasy, Tongan, Samoan and four dialects of Chinese.

He was probably most noted for his teachings about deliverance from demonic oppression and about Israel

(Editor note: His little booklet, "Our Debt To Israel", changed my life, as it ignited my heart's love for Israel and the Jewish people.  I will send you one free if you request it. Steve Martin)

He was best known in Pentecostal and Charismatic circles, although his teaching is distinctly non-denominational, a fact that has long been emphasized by his worldwide ministry.

Derek Prince Ministries operated under the slogan "Reaching the Unreached and Teaching the Untaught" for several decades.

Today the mission statement is "Derek Prince Ministries exists to develop disciples of Jesus Christ, through the Bible teaching of Derek Prince."

The vision is to reach the peoples of the world, in a language they understand, with the Bible teaching of Derek Prince, using every type of media and all forms of distribution, regardless of the economic means of the recipients. There are over 14 offices worldwide.

Derek liked to use his hand to emphasize a point.

One of the best Bible teacher I knew, and sat under.

His teaching tools were the Bible and Strong's Concordance.

Making a point...

...with out stretched arm.

King of Kings in Christchurch, New Zealand

I had the privilege of working with the staff of Derek Prince Ministries, first in Fort Lauderdale, Fl from 1987-1990 as the Financial Supervisor, and then in Charlotte, NC from 2001-2005 as the Director of Operations and Finance.

What Derek taught during his life is as relevant today as it was then. Even more so, as the day draws nearer.

David Selby, Derek's son-in-law, carried the major responsibility of the USA ministry office, and served also as the International Director. I was most blessed to have had David as my boss for those eight years total.

When Derek and Ruth visited the office once or twice a year, limited by his extensive worldwide travel, we rejoiced to be with them.

I bless those currently on staff in the Charlotte, NC office. Many have served there for over 20 years, and have remained very faithful in their tasks.

As Derek loved to say, "God is Faithful". We are very thankful for his life laid down for our Faithful and True God, the Living God of Israel.

Turn a virtual corner in the Library of Congress' digitalized photo archives and you never know what you'll find.  It happened many times since the launch of this site two years ago, and it just happened again.

Within the vast collection of the American Colony Photographic Department Collection (roughly 1890 - 1946) we discovered amazing picture and postcard portraits taken by Shlomo and Sonia Narinsky. The photographs were sold by the American Colony's souvenir store located inside Jerusalem's Old City near Jaffa Gate.

Born in the Ukraine in 1885, Shlomo Narinsky studied art in Moscow, Paris and Berlin before moving to Palestine where he set up a studio.

In 1916, Shlomo and his wife were exiled to Egypt by the Turkish rulers.

They returned to the Land of Israel after the British captured the territory in 1918.

They returned to Israel, eventually moving to Haifa where Shlomo taught as a photography teacher.  He died in 1960, relatively unknown.

Shlomo Narinsky was also trained as a painter, and some of his photographs almost reflect the post-impressionist Vincent Van Gogh's wheat field series.

Sens.: Americans Would Support Strike on Iran

Sens.: Americans Would Support Strike on Iran

CBNNews.com, Monday, July 01, 2013

JERUSALEM, Israel -- Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., are calling for the United States to take action to stop Iran's nuclear program.

At a press conference in Jerusalem Sunday evening, they said a nuclear Iran is the greatest possible Mideast danger. They believe the American people would support a U.S. military strike to stop the Islamic Republic from getting nuclear weapons.

"If the president of the United States told the American people that the Iranians were about to acquire or develop nuclear weapons and it poses a direct threat to security not only to the U.S. and the world, I'm confident the American people would support the president of the United States," McCain said.

"Most Americans believe the Iranians are trying to get a nuclear weapon," Graham said. "Most Americans believe they would use it if they got it; most Americans believe they're serious about destroying the State of Israel."

"Most Americans believe that radical Islam is a threat to the American way of life," he continued. "So I think a case can be made. It just has to be made. We're war weary but we're not tired of being free."

Both McCain and Graham say Iran's recent election of a new president will not change Iran's nuclear ambitions.
